    As a supplier in the US defense industry, I can tell you that it takes years, and sometimes decades, of testing before military technology is fully deployed, even if newer prototypes are readily available and functional. As an example, there is a part that my company has been producing for almost 20 years now, and the aircraft it goes into is only just starting to see field deployment within the last few years (now, granted, some of that time was due to project delays and red tape, but still). So it makes perfect sense to me that the T-60 armor would be deployed while the X-01 suits existed. The T-60 armor had probably already been in development for years beforehand. And as another commenter pointed out, the "X" designation is typically given to experimental technology that is still being tested.

    • @John.McMillan
      @John.McMillan 3 роки тому +80

      Exactly, And you can see in alot of fallout lore that alot of equipment in general only spent a couple years (if that) in testing before being fielded due to the war looming, Hence why you can see such stupid looking gear in fallout- It was just slightly better than current so they used it, The XO-1 was probably the only time in recent that universes US military went "lets take our time with this"
      Then again, The US has the bradley so they might do that as is. (Im aware it was being developed since the 80's)

    • @robwitzke9634
      @robwitzke9634 3 роки тому +32

      @@howdoin99 Actually yeah. We do stuff for the F-35, and frankly I couldn't agree more. All of this time and money went into developing an aircraft that doesn't even perform as well as it's predecessor, the F-22. And it's not just the cost of the parts themselves, but also all of the completely unnecessary requirements and regulations for parts that aren't even flight safety parts. Lower tier suppliers are so tied up in all of the red tape flowed down from the government and all of the big aerospace companies that we have no choice but to increase our prices just to cover all of the extra paperwork and engineering overhead. And that in turn makes the final cost of the craft inflate to ridiculous amounts. Even recently, a bunch of the big aerospace companies came together to develop yet another ISO spec that is supposed to standardize requirements across the aerospace industry. And yet again each company is going to have their own requirements above and beyond that spec, effectively making it useless. The whole aerospace industry is out of control.
      Edit: it was an AS spec, not an ISO spec, but the point is still the same.

      Actually is likely that T-60 is a custom kit for the T-45d, it was probally called as T-48 due to be a upgrade for the T-45 in use, it saw minor action at Anchorage but is widely used by American Troops on Cuba, Chinesse Assault and support allies groups on Asia before the nuclear war, the T-60 was also used by the Encçave before they have the schematics of the many X-01 & upgrade them.

    Further proof for your theory lies in the name of the X-01 itself. In the military naming convention there is letters and numbers. The army uses M for weapon model (M4/M16) H for helicopter (with a modifier such as U for utility or A for attack). The air force uses A for attack, B for bomber, C for Cargo and F for fighter aircraft. Across all branches, however, the letter X designates an experimental weapon system. Once that system is fielded it is given the letter Y for prototype. So in the fallout universe the power armor series has been given the designation T. The X-01 is a series of power armor but because it has an X instead of a T we know that it was an experimental system that had not yet been fielded.

    The X-01 and T-60 power armors were likely competing models. The US Government has historically let different suppliers submit designs and then held a sort of competition to see which it will ultimately purchase (the competition between the F-22 and F-23 being a recent example). The X-01 presumably lost the competition, possibly because it was more expensive to build or maintain than the T-60, but prototypes still exist. The Enclave presumably based its advanced armor designs on the X-01 prototypes.

      It could also be the result of the US military just giving the T-45 series a final gasp by means of refurbishing, before its eventual retirement. It's already done extensively.
      A good example is the M16, heavy and outdated, but it's still in use, mainly because they still work. They get upgrades, but its slowly being phased out.
      While the X-01 is being tested, why not fix the kinks and problems they knew the t45 had? It would also make sense that it would be used by soldiers working domestically, as the Guard and Reserves are usually given the older equipment

    • @hobomisanthropus2414
      @hobomisanthropus2414 6 років тому +45

      Someone who understands how military contracting works.
      Also, another possibility, is the T-60 is simply an improvement on the T-45 series, in a similar fashion to how the M1A2 Main Battle Tank is, at a glance, a copy of the M1A1 Abrams. Given the similarities between T45 and T60, manufacturing and retooling would be much faster, while a full R&D cycle on the X01 (Likely to become the T-71) was conducted.
      As for the Loading screen, this could just be a grammatical error too
      "Specially Engineered, the X01 Power Armor was employed by remnants of the US Army..."
      A single comma ch anges the entire context of the sentence.

    • @memestealer6348

    • @zeusthefox1585
      @zeusthefox1585 6 років тому +11

      Thats actually a good theroy!
      But that wouldnt explain why theres so much X-01 in the Commonwealth and in West Viginia.
      Maybe it was massed produced but was for Black ops missions meaning it was more scarce.
      Or considering its design it could of been a Juggernaut suit which explains the Expense of repairing and maintaining it, its armor is incredibly thick, aswell as the huge neck guard.

  • @robin6469
    @robin6469 6 років тому +521

    I believe the T-60 is not really a separate suit of power armour from the T-45 but is instead an upgraded and retrofitted suit of T-45. This would explain how the brotherhood got so many suits of T-60. They simply upgraded their T-45 suits using prewar tech (presumably found at Adam's airforce base). This would also explain why the military was deploying T-60 suits while developing X-01, they were likely trying to put the surplus sets of T-45 left over from anchorage to good use by upgrading them to modern standards and deploying them for domestic duty.

  • @kanevaldier

    I have a simple explanation for the odd time line. This in fact happens in real life where a prototype of a new weapon or vehicle is made but not fully distributed. Meanwhile, a new variant of a mass produced already fully functioning piece of equipment is produced. This can be seen in just about every military faction and is generally considered a way of life. Usually, only a small set number of soldiers or units will get to "test" the prototypes in real life scenarios and this would be consistent with the fact that there are so many in the commonwealth. In this manner the loading screen is correct as is the lore and much of the issues brought up in this video.

      Super late to the show here but Kanevaldier is pretty much on the money with this, because the thing not mentioned in this video is how long it takes to produce said T-50 Power Armor. Also with the whole testing out proto-types is spot on as well, what would have theoretically happened if the bombs had not dropped is they would have tested the X-01 and after the initial testing period they would have brought it in and checked the data for any bugs or flaws to fix and ways to improve it as a whole. Sadly that never happened until long after the war with the Enclave as they took the data from the time after the bombs dropped to look at and correct any flaws thus giving us the Advanced Power Armor which would make the sequence of suits line up without any real gaps in the pre war time frame.

    It's not strange if you think about it like this
    2067 - T45D deployed, obviously there is some kind of prototype now being worked on which turns into T-51B released in 2076
    2076 - T51B deployed new prototype being worked on gets rushed out for civilian control( T-60) and to replace the older models while now another prototype is being worked on that will be superior in every way (x-01), but bombs drop leaving only maybe a few prototype suits of the x-01 In existence and maybe some schematics that the enclave use to finish fully developing it..?? makes sense to me..

    • @LuciferLonseraph
      @LuciferLonseraph 7 років тому +17

      @Dom510
      Or, and just hear me out on this, you can use your brain and choose to interpret it like this:
      T-45 D: This represents the form of power armour predominantly used during the Sino-American War during 2067 and beyond, according to the Anchorage simulation IF you choose to believe that the General didn't choose to use his hand-wavium to justify its presence. It's name indicates that it's T45 Mark D, though it's more likely that the suits used during Anchorage are probably Mark As and Bs, with further developments being made later on during the war giving us Mark C through to Mark F. After all, why would they deploy the fourth variation to the front line first, as opposed to the first variation and then use the data found from the live-fire tests of actual combat to improve upon the design?
      T-51 B: This represents the form of power armour which is commonly considered to have replaced the T45 suits. It makes sense that eventually a different model would be produced, but probably to be used alongside the T45 in a different role, similar to how not all tanks are equal and some are developed for specific roles. They are, after all, meant to be the next evolution of combat, and all militaries are, if nothing else, people who choose to have lots of excellent single-task equipment as opposed to one above-average generalised piece of equipment. The name chosen suggests that its the Mark B variation, which again makes sense since its the model closely related to the Brotherhood, and any later variation suits would have been better put to use on the frontlines of the Sino-American War.
      This is all well-established, with the T-45 slotting in nicely to explain issues with the idea of power armour and stuff, and we can accept this. Here's where it gets tricky though - if the T-51 B variation is only meant to have been establised as a legitimate power armour by June 2076, that means that, at best, models C through F are established within the final, what, 16 months of the conflict, AND they managed to get a Model T-60 into mass production?
      Alternatively, look at it like this:
      T-60: Represents an upgraded version of the T-45, using similar techniques to the production of T-51, but because it modifies an already existing design with already existing materials and properties, as opposed to having to establish a brand-new design, it is able to be rushed out. Or alternatively, it's meant to be a BOS-exclusive synthesis of pre-war and post-war design, since the East Coast have apparently ditched all their T-45 suits and now exclusively use T-60, created during the in-between years of FO3 and FO4. This is fitting within their new lore, since they have apparently managed to create a modified zeppelin airship, as well as fully repairing Liberty Prime. Them managing to create something new based on pre-existing power armour designs to better suit their needs actually works for Maxson's forward thinking version of the BOS (forward thinking for the BOS, though their reasoning makes sense).
      X-01: IS just the APA from FO2 and FONV. The APA Mk 2 seen in FO3 can in turn be considered to be the APA Mk2 of FO2, or alternatively in keeping with the pre-war designation systems the APA V2 in FO2 is considered to be it's Model B to the APA's Model A. This makes the Mk2 in FO3 a legitimate development made, as opposed to simply retconning a design choice.
      As for their inclusion in the level lists? This is Bethesda, who heard our comments on the Enclave's PA in FO3 and therefore reused the old, more fondly remembered design AND allowed the T-60 to be used by non BOS players, and so added it to their level lists in order to avoid complaints about 1) locking the "best" gear behind a faction and 2) not allowing people to use their favourite enclave looking gear.

    Having multiple "next gen" versions of the same technology is very common for the military. It's not usually until they are ready to choose one for mass production that they single out a model.
    The other possibility is that one was cheaper than the other but the more expensive one was much more powerful. So they would mass produce the cheaper one and keep a smaller number of the more powerful suits for special forces or heavy troops.

      I just chalk it up to pre war Jet and Myron's Jet being entirely different chems that share a name and imbibing method:
      Pre War Jet's high changes people's perception of reality to make them feel like theyre moving through bullet time and has far less of an impact on the user's health and minimal withdrawal effects
      180 years later, Myron is employed by the Morenos to make a chem that'll get people hooked fast. He experiments with peyote but finds that its not addictive enough before having a Eureka moment upon witnessing the Brahmin herders getting whoozy after working in the pens all day. He slowly refines his new chem to be extremely addictive and detrimental to the user's health, and decides to use the empty pre-war inhalers laying around as a dispensery, and the Morenos just call it Jet because thats what the labels on the inhaler say.
      The Great Khans, enraged by the events of Bitter Springs, begin to supply The Fiends with chems, and in an effort to spite the NCR they use information learned from the Followers to combine the effects of Pre war and Post war Jet together by adding Aerosol to the recipe, which proves to be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands due to its incredibly high addiction rate and potency. Turbo is introduced to the wasteland on a wave of blood and fire.

    Three things:
    The loading screen is actually consistent with the lore, if you consider that it says that the X-01 SERIES of power armour was developed by the Enclave. As you mentioned, the APA is actually an UPDATED version of the pre-war X-01 PA. This would mean that the APA is still part of the X-01 series of power armour--so unless Bethesda explicitly says that the series number of the APA is X-02 and not X-01, there no contradiction in the lore there.
    The T-60 series of armour can be seen as an upgrade kit of the existing T-45 series of power armour. This makes sense considering how similar the T-60 is visually to the T-45. The prevalence of the T-60 in the Commonwealth also makes sense considering the presence of the National Guard and army bases in the Commonwealth in general, and, as you mentioned, the T-60 was only deployed domestically. Had the world not ended, it's likely that the T-60 upgrade kits would have been sent to the front lines for field upgrades to the already-deployed T-45 (which is sensible since supplying your entire front line with T-51s would take a lot more time and resources, and upgrade kits require minimal engineering work).
    In terms of how the T-51 fits into all this, the loading screens still state that they were the most advanced power armour deployed at the time the bombs fell, yet the in-game stats have the T-60 as being superior. Advanced ≠ best, however. The T-45, and the upgraded T-60, offer protection by being bulky armour constructed almost entirely out of thick, heavy steel plates, whilst the T-51 is far more mobile / agile, and offers similar protection without thick, heavy armour plates. So the T-51 would still be the most advanced power armour available on the balance of the technology it uses, the protection it offers, and the agility it provides. This is consistent with the stats in FO3 and FONV, where the T-45s came with a huge loss in Agility compared to the T-51. Basically, if the T-51 came with armour plates as thick as the ones in the T-60, it would offer vastly superior protection due to the more advanced polymers and ceramics in its construction, while the T-60 gets its protection by literally welding even more thick, heavy steel plates on top of the already bulky steel T-45.

    Don't forget in military designations, X denotes a prototype. Working theory, wasn't actually employed yet, but in a stage of mass produced prototypes, in which production kinks and other development bugs are worked out. Given the state of imminent war, the US military was probably pushing out all sorts of designs, even if redundant (developing Prototype T-45 Medic armor on an inferior, older version of power armor, FO3). That would be in keeping with US military tradition. WWII saw this happen, and the Cold War especially, with equipment being developed and produced that was already inferior or immediately phased out after little time in service.
    Given real world snafu's, Bethesda has the luxury of just pointing at stupid in-game bureaucracy and blaming that, and it actually kinda makes sense most of the time. Lets just hope that never becomes SOP.

    Actually, I seem to remember that a series of logs in Fort Strong told us that the T-60 was *not* a newly-designed power armor set. Rather, it was still just the T-45 suit, having been upgraded and improved on so much since 2076 that, by then, it hardly resembled the original T-45 and was therefore reclassified as its own unique line. That both ties in with what you mentioned about the T-45 and T-60 being so visually similar, plus it answers the question about why they would deploy the T-60 when the X-01 was already in development.

    T-60 was probably developed for domestic use because it is so similar in design to the T-45d. In pre-war posters and magazines, the T-45d is what's most commonly depicted (from what I can remember). The military probably had the T-60 modeled after the T-45d so that it would be recognized by civilians, and wouldn't be too new, or give away how much power armor has developed. The X-01 was probably top secret (except for the quantum suit, which was probably explained as being just a display model of a 'space age' power armor suit, and not an actually functional prototype) and therefore wasn't going to be used domestically.

    Let's think about this from what we know in fallout. The X-01 is more costly to repair than all other suits in the game. Most likely the United States Government decided that, rather than pouring tons of money into a prototype suit that hadn't even been fielded or battle proven yet, they could do the cheeper option and upgrade a pre-existing suit that saw extensive service in the sino-american war, the T-45. Plus, they could have still been putting it through tests/modifying it. That's my theory, anyway :-)

      The US military in Fallout does not do this, but from what I gather they designate things like power armor with a "T", and rifles (Such as the R91, AKA the Assault Rifle in FO3) received and "R" designation. Other weapons used by the US military in Fallout are named by their commercial names, rather than military designation, for some reason.

    In my opinion, the T-45D, T-51B, and the T-60 power armor sets were a commercial military version set of enhanced armor, while the X-01 power armor was a top secret (CIA like) set of advanced armor that had perks that the commercial version did not have. That would be used as a trump card for the war of resources. Due to a nuclear apocalypse, they had to abandon the prototype, which was later finished by an unnamed source or faction after the Great War. All those who play fallout should know the pre-war government liked to hide a lot from the public.

    The T60 could be a modification or an enhanced variant of the T45. Here’s what I think would’ve happened; After the Battle of Anchorage, the US Military took notes and statements of the T45’s use in battle. There were probably many complaints with the armor that needed to be fixed in order for continued use to be a viable option. The engineers went back to the drawing board to make tweaks and modifications to the T45’s design to make it more suitable for combat. Keeping in mind the huge quantity of T45s that had been made, and factories that would have to be scrapped or modified to manufacture the new armor, the design needed to use the same or similar manufacturing machines as the T45 Power Armor to stop this time and money wasting process. It also needed to be compatible with the older models for easy modification and interchangeable parts so they would have to scrap as little of the T45s as possible. This led to the T60 design that was able to meet the criteria. During the modification of the factories to manufacture the T60s, all surplus T45s were gathered to modify into T60s or sell to private businesses such as Vault-Tech. During this part of the operation, the bombs fell and left the project in a standstill. There would be huge stockpiles of T45s across the country waiting for modification at different factories. Plus the factories would have the machine modifications partly installed or waiting to be installed. The Brotherhood would just have to find a factory mostly intact with the modifications waiting to be installed. Then they would just go from factory to factory, stockpile to stockpile picking up T45s and turning them into T60s, or making T60s from scrap.

    Maybe X-01 power armour is prototyped before the great war but mass produced after the great war? And the reason why T-60 is also developed and deployed after US army already had X-01 is probably that T-60 can be upgraded from T-45 to save budget, same reason why US fielded M3 grease gun even though the existing M1 Thompson is better. Resources would get scarce at the end of a total war. That also explains why BoS has such a large amount of T-60s considering they had many T-45s in FO3, they just need the schematics to upgrade the T-45s, much easier than produce them from the ground up.

And any time a franchise starts relying on the old troupe of 'Nazis' (Maxson's Brotherhood of Steel) in a game it gets tiring fast. Crazy thing is with Skyrim they started doing that as well. The question is if they just end up taking the Thalmor too far.

    I'd almost say that the T-60 was less of it's own development and more of a modernization of the T-45 being that they look so similar, it would be like a retrofit of older armor to be able to match the capacity of the T-51B which for a resource scarce world makes sense to retrofit old armor to be more capable, since that would shrink production and research costs, that would also help explain why there is so much of it (along side the brotherhood making their own)

      @CSSstravag 6 років тому +50

      Not necessarily a mistake. No evidence to support this other than IRL precedent, but I suspect what you are seeing is divergent armor manufacturing paths from two or more different companies. The structure of the T-45 and T-60 units are real similar, so there is your first manufacturer. The T-51 is structured quite a bit different in terms of plate assembly, so there's a second. The X-01 could be a third company or a different take from the same group as the T-51 manufacturer, with my guess being same company as the T-51 production units.
      Remember that in pre-NATO designation nomenclature, the US used T-designations for armored units (T = tank), and X-designations for experimental units. (Air force uses T = trainer and X = experimental)
      How this possibility echoes IRL is that the present-day US aircraft are manufactured by multiple companies (Northrop Grumman, Lockheed, Boeing being the big three) but all use the same designation series (F = fighter, A = Attacker, B = Bomber). By this metric, I think the government issued frame specifications for the power armor and had more than one company bid out armor units to attach to those frames.
      Just my standing guess on the matter.

    • @sabermaverick
      @sabermaverick 6 років тому +11

      Wrong on the designations. Prior to 1962 all branches of the US military used their own designations for whatever they were using. After 1962 all of them were homogenized to resemble the Air Force system. Before 1962 the US Army used T=Test, M=Standard model accepted into service. For example when the M103 heavy tank was in its development phase it was known as the T43.
      As to what the US military does in the fallout universe is only up to the guys telling the story. Why Bethesda did what they did makes sense because they were not the originators of the story, merely those who currently own the license. So they can do whatever they want with it. Not that that is ever the best way of treating lore *cough* Star Wars *cough*...

    This is my headcanon for the X-01 in Nuka World.
    When the Enclave made their move in the time of the Chosen One, they sent scouts out all over to find and secure old military assets. When you find X-01s in Fallout 4, you always find them near Military assets or crashed vertibirds. Nuka World, with it's research into Power Armor enhancement (Project Cobalt). (The Original Cobalt-Enhanced power armor is actually the T-51 hidden in the World of Refreshment.)
    So these scouts arrive in Nuka World. They naturally make a beeline for Star Control which, with all of the Star Cores still in place, is networked to every corner of the park, including where Project Cobalt is. So they are unable to find the original enhanced suit. However, they are able to get the research data, which they then apply to one of their own X-01 suits. The research team gives their shiny new Quantum suit a snazzy Nuka-World themed paint job - Everything else with a Nuka World themed paint job is RED, but they went with BLUE for their prototype.
    Then The Chosen One blows up the Poseidon Oil Rig. The order is given to withdraw, but... there is limited space on the Vertibirds. People are more important than equipment at this point, so the armor is ditched. Those who can secure the armor in pre-war facilities. Some suits are damaged and just abandoned where they lie. (The poor bastard in the Listening Post in the Glowing Sea tries to repair his armor enough to be environmentally sealed so he can escape, but starves to death first).
    The Nuke World team has to ditch their armor. But where? They realize the glass on the display case in Star Control is armored, so they put it in there, figuring it would be mistaken for being part of the diorama. They then place a high level encrypted lock on the case. THIS is why you need more Star Cores to open a display case than you do to control every single armed robot in the place (Star Control needs enough processing power to crack the encryption). They always intended to return to retrieve the suit, but history had other plans.

    Ok, here's how I see the power armor timeline: first the US Military develops the t-45d, in order to fight the chinese stationed in Alaska. The suits prove useful to stop the Chinese from conquering Alaska but not enough to defeat them, due to design flaws, such as exposed wire in the arms or its difficulty to operate. As usual with any invention, progress is slow at first, that's why it took West-Tek ten years to develop the t-51b. With it, America manages to get Chinese troops out of Anchorage and even advance into mainland China. Then, as everyone knows, the Chinese desperately launch their nukes and the Great War happens. However, human development in technology is always slow at first but gets exponentially faster. That is why, as I see it, scientists were able to come up with the t-60 and deploy it as a test afainst rioting civilians in only one year. (Then the Brotherhood found theout schematics for the armor and were able to mass produce it). The Military, unsatisfied with the t-60, pushed West-Tek to improve the suit. They came up with the X-01 prototype. They were not able to mass produce the suit as it wasbig developed right before the war. My explanation for the Nuka-Cola Quantum power armor is that Caleb Bradberton, with his ties to the Military (as demonstrated by Project Cobalt) liked the new prototype, so he managed to convince the US Government to provide him with one (along with a suit of t-51b, found at the Quantum Factory in Nuka-world). Its otherworldly appearance made the suit quite appropriate to advertise Nuka-Cola as the bottles had a rocket shape, also related to space. So as to boost the advertising campaign of Nuka-Cola Quantum he had the suit painted and put in a display at the galactic zone. Then the nukes fell. The Enclave did not start development of new armor, as they did not need it. They believed everyone outside of a vault had died and that China was no longer a threat, so they prioritised survival in the Oil Rig. Once they started venturing into the wasteland with their vertibirds, and found people had survived and were forming large (and potentially dangerius communities, such as the Brotherhood of Steel), they realised the need of technical andvantage over those mutants. Work began on a new power armor, based on the pre-war prototype, the X-01. They developed the Advanced power armor, and later, the Advanced power armor Mk.II. Now they were ready. Feeling confident, the formed an outpost at Navarro and then spread across the continent, establishing bases in the Midwestern United States and the East Coast. After, the Enclave's defeat at the end of Fallout 2, severely crippled them, leaving the bases at Raven Rock and the Adams Air Force base as their maon headquarters. To justify the enclave power armor from Fallout 3, I'm going to assume that, with the destruction of the Oil Rig, most of the Advanced Power Armors were destroyed, and their schematics along with them. Obviously, the remnants from New Vegas had their own suits they kept. In this situation, Autumn Senior ordered the devlopment of a new suit, also based on the X-01 design. As their resources were not as plentiful, the resultant suit was not asavailable powerful and the development took several years. Then the pesky Brotherhood showed up again. This time with a very different policy. As they recruited wastelanders, even though their technology was not as modern as the one from the west, their numbers were menacing, and a threat to the Enclave. So they developed the Tesla Armor. (It may also be that the Enclave created it as a contibgency plan against possible threats, well before the BoS arrived). Whilst they were fighting against the Brotherhood, they developed the Hellfire Power Armor. Again, it was never as powerful as the Advanced Power Armor Mk.II, due to lack of resources and to the fact that it was a suit especially designed to be resistant to fire. Then the Enclave were defeated by the Lone Wanderer and their presence in the Continental US practically disappeared. This argument would also explain the Fallout Tactics power armor. I know it was a Brotherhood armor but maybe they stole or recovered it from Enclave outposts in Chicago.

    One possible explanation for developing the T60 when the X-01 already existed could be the government seeking a cheaper or more easily mass produced armor, or even something along the lines of a company that designed the T60 being awarded the contract for full production and the X-01 company (assuming it's a different company) being award a lesser contract for limited production. Or simply the T60 had been okayed for full deployment while the X-01 was still being developed and the T60 was slotted to be phased out by the X-01 but the bombs fell before this happened.

The armor was never used on the battlefield however it was mostly finished. The X-01 is not Enclave Advanced Power Armor. The Enclave took the X-01 and modified it into Advanced Power Armor MK1. They did some modifications to the torso and arms. The Enclave also put mini Nuclear Reactors in the suits rather than use Fusion Cores. That's the true story behind it.

    On a related subject, I have always thought that the T-51 was a civilian/commercial version of the power armor used by the military since it has the most commercial paint jobs (Sugar Bombs, Abraxo, Vim!, Nuka-Cola etc). Sorta like the Hummer is the civilian/commercial version of the Hum-V.

      I think it's more that the T51 was the most common suit at the time and as such there were plenty of surplus suits floating about.
      The Vim! paint jobs even reference the military appeal.
      I would imagine there was the beginning of a shift from the T51 to the T60 just before the war started meaning the US government was offloading some of its T51 stock. Hence why these companies grabbed them for advertising purposes.

    • @glez13gt
      @glez13gt 8 років тому +3

      Actually since T-51 is the original power armor and it is also the one used in a great battle so it would be popular and respected within the public in the Fallout universe. So it makes sense that Bethesda choose it for all these paint jobs. There is no such thing as a civilian/commercial version, at least until now. They most probably just gave us the Quantum X-01 because it was the last DLC and they wanted to give us an unique version of the most powerful power armor, and went through a few hurdles in the lore to deliver.

    It could be that the X-01 and T-60 were simultaneously developed, with T-60 being further along in the development and testing process than the X-01 so that the military felt they could deploy the T-60 to "average" soldiers, while the X-01 was still primarily a prototype when the bombs dropped.

    • @briansouthparkstudio1357
      @briansouthparkstudio1357 8 років тому +8

      it's also likely that the T-60 is just an upgrade and refit for the T-45. maybe even the same kind of upgrade the brotherhood did to their T-45's to be ready to fight the enclave in fallout 3. and can even easily explain the brotherhood's ability to make them as even fallout 3's brotherhood of steel could make the T-45. so being able to make the upgrade and refit kits to upgrade the armor they can already make would be better for them then the advanced power armor mk 2 and the hellfire armor they had access to in which they have to retool and make their whole industry to make

    • @Sworddancer48
      @Sworddancer48 8 років тому +5

      I agree that from a lore viewpoint it would probably have to do with the manufacturing cost. Even if it's not just a T-45 upgrade, its similar enough to be a lot less costly to produce than the X-01. Especially for mass production in wartime, less retooling of factories, as you already mentioned.

    My personal theory on why there are so many X0-1 suits in the Commonwealth is the fact that power armor production factories were centered in Natick; also known as ground zero for the glowing sea. The reason you can't find those factories are because they were vaporized in the nuclear attack.

  • @lHawkel
    @lHawkel 7 років тому +19

    Maybe the Enclave's PA and X-01 PA is the same.
    The X-01 found in the Commonwealth are prototypes, and the one from the Enclave is the official version that was actually mass employed for combat.
    As for the amount of X-01 in FO4, there are only 3 OFFICIALLY placed sets, and all of them are in Nukaworld.
    The rest are level dependent, which cant really be considered as part of the lore. If you never reach level 28, you'll never find ANY X-01 in the Commonwealth without Nukaworld, except a single X-01 helm from the Brotherhood of Steel, which made sense cuz it's probably a version employed by the Enclave.

    • @lHawkel
      @lHawkel 7 років тому +8

      As for the loading screen, the process of engineering took place over a long period of time. The so it's possible that the Enclave continued the development of the PA after the Great War, the X-01 in FO4 is only the prototype. In this case, everything is lore-friendly.

    The X-01 is likely an experimental or prototype PA. Experimental aircraft in the real world are referred to as "X-planes", it is possible that is where the "X" in "X-01" comes from. The Enclave probably improved upon the prototype design and named the final version "Advanced Power Armour Mk. I".
    Edit: The Commonwealth was probably where new power armour was developed and tested, that would explain the presence of X-01 and T-60 on the east coast, and the absence of it elsewhere in the United States.

    There could be several reasons why the US might adopt the T60 after already creating an X-01 prototype. Firstly, defence spending isn't entirely, or even partially, dictated by utilitarian thinking. There is a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes, including budgetary issues, political wrangling, inter-departmental rivalries - you name it. I can imagine the X-01 was a pet project of certain individuals or companies and they continually pushed to develop it, despite it being, generally, impractical. It seems to be the US Army at this time became a bit technologically obsessed. They likely saw it as their only effective means to counter to the raw manpower of the Chinese - initial success at Anchorage would likely further encourage it. It's possible the DoD, DARPA (whoever) fell into the same trap of the Germans in WWII and became obsessed with what my history professor referred to as 'gold plated tanks' - gargantuan armoured machines, which although individually impressive, were simply impractical to win an actual war. I think the X-01 might be synonymous with German projects such as the Lowe, Maus and Ratte - massive super-heavy tanks that were being developed from as early as 1941, but which were all ultimately dropped (or ended by the end of the war). Prototypes were built, but they were so expensive, labor-intensive and impractical they essentially remained purely conceptual. So, faced with the actual day-to-day task of actually fighting the war, the Germans continued to build their established tanks (although these were also over engineered to a large degree) and instead made various upgrades to them in the form of variants. Considering their relative visual similarities, I imagine the T-60 is essentially an up-gunned T-51, and was much easier, cheaper and quicker to produce than rolling out the X-01, which at the time, had perhaps not even gone under combat trials. Furthermore, it seems likely the T-51 and T-60 share many of the same components and factories building one could easily be converted to build the other. That might not be so easy with the X-01.
    By the time the Enclave came along, they perhaps had the time and resources to develop what was in 2077 still a flawed project into something workable - the Advanced Power Armour (its interesting they changed the name, because traditionally the prefix 'X' is reserved for prototypes, so perhaps this suggests the X-01 was now out of prototype?). So, what is one doing in Nuka-World? Well, (and I dont have the DLC so I can only speculate) but perhaps it was a bit of a PR push on the part of Nuke-Cola and their military supporters to generate buzz around their project, which was seemingly being overlooked in favour of the T-60. For all we know, that X-01 quantum could simply be an aesthetic shell and was displayed far in advance of the project actually being completed. This is unlikely if it was top secret, but it might be something a corporate entity might do to win a government contract?
    Anyway, that was a lot longer than I expected.

      Mark Newton Having the military show off experimental tech and new designs is not uncommon at least as per the early 20th century. They used to let reporters and photographers on new warships to show the public the raw might of the new steel Navy, so it's not inconceivable that in the hyper idealized world of pre war Fallout, that the military would do something similar but with power armor and weapons, of course all curated to not reveal secrets

    • @joshuakim5240
      @joshuakim5240 7 років тому +6

      One thing a lot of people tend to forget is that when it comes to warfare, armor is almost never distributed in the most advanced form available. This is because a weapon is just one handheld device, and can be given to everyone MUCH cheaper than and entire suit of body-covering armor that likely costs several times more than the weapon. One example of this is how someone already made bulletproof "power armor" (so to speak) as early as 2007 and even demonstrated it on youtube, yet not a single soldier in the US military operates a single suit of those, nor are there any efforts to improve upon that suit for military purposes.
      The ONE downside to the X-01 compared to any other power armor model in Fallout 4 is that it is VERY resource expensive to repair, costing several additional, rare components like Copper to keep in good condition. In a resource perspective, the X-01 is actually the least efficient power armor for continuous operation because of how much more expensive it is to actually maintain. This is likely why it was never issued because the much more cheaper T-models still did their roles well enough and cheaply enough to make the X-01's existence rather ironically unnecessary for much rather than an experimental template.
      The thing we can gather from this is that The Enclave based their Advanced power armor on the X-01, but did NOT just merely copy it via reverse engineering because it was way too resource expensive to distribute to an entire army. The many years of experimental armor production therefore were likely efforts to make a "cheaper" but still just as effective version of the X-01, which they did succeed at doing.

Continuity is easily explainable if X-01 Prototypes were made for different purposes than normal PA, perhaps even by different organisation. here let me go off subject a bit. im sorry but this might be a read. a good read. from some one that has been FALLowing OUTright lore from the series sense the very beginning of fallout's creation under Interplay. Relating to power armor.
      August 2065: The need for increased mobility among the units of the US Army Mechanized Cavalry leads the American government's defense contractors to focus their research on the development of a man-based tank - the ultimate result is powered Infantry armor.
      2065 - 2067: Research and development into power armor intensifies among the different firms involved in the project and several prototypes are developed, many of which prove to be unworkable once they are deployed in the field. These prototypes (Dubbed X-project) pave the way for several major future advances in materials science, robotics, and nuclear fusion technology in the decade before the outbreak of the Great War.
      2067: The first suit of T-45 power armor is deployed for combat duty among American infantrymen fighting the Chinese occupation of Alaska.
      The X-45A was the first prototype suit of power armor that was sited under development. the T-45D was the first deployed variant.
      September 2075: Under the command of General Brock testing begins at Fort Strong, Boston on an early batch of prototype T-51b Power Armor Suits constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers dubed X-50.
      MP-47 prototype medic power armor - a power armor prototype
      June 2076: The X-51 power armor prototype is finally completed (Dubed T-51B), resulting in the development of the suit of power armor. Same month, the suit is sent to the front of the Alaskan liberation.
      -The X-60 power armor (Dubed T-60) is developed as a =PROTOTYPE=, intended to replace the T-51 model. In the final days before the Great War, the suit sees limited deployment among military peacekeeping forces within the United States. Around this time, early models of the X-01 power armor were under development by the US government, only dubed as X-01.

      -October 2220: Enclave scientists finally develop a reliable version of what they dubbed ADVANCED POWER ARMOR based off the X-01 model. The suit is found to be the toughest suit of power armor ever made in any fallout game to date.

      A. Beth has shit lore, no matter what. lets rename the Mid-West BoS armor the X-00, the power armor in Fo4 X-01, the enclave armor in Fo3 X-02.
      or
      B. X-01 was a prototype, was picked up years later and made into the Advanced Power Armor. later after the oil rig, the power armor not able to be allocated for enclave head counts. they turned to the Mid-West BoS or what was left of them, developed the power armor seen in Fallout 3 or what i like to call the X-02. or derived from the Advanced power armor in FoT i like to call the X-02 Mk.II. which IS BLACK or darker like seen in fallout 3. vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/e/ec/MidwesternBrotherhoodAdvancedPowerArmor.png/revision/latest?cb=20101108151413

      I like to think (to fix the bethesda mess) That
      Developed order:
      T 51b - F1 & F2
      T 45 - F3 & F4
      T 60 - F4
      X 01 - F2
      ? ?? - Frank Horrigan T-51/X-01 hybrid custom design.
      X 01 II (advanced power armor) - F2
      Midwestern Power armor - Tactics
      Mk2 - Fallout 3
      I would say the enclave Mk2 (f3) follows the same evolution that midwestern power armor follows... by the lack of resources (F2 ending for the enclave or the Ship crash on F Tactics) and they decided both on their own different way to develop smaller frame power armor, more focused on survavility and easier maintenance than other heavier and bulkier models... somehow similar to what happened with the t45 prewar, where that were worse models than t60 or t51 but cheaper and easier to be built.

    Fallout 4 is so full of lore discrepancies. It's painful to think about, I just play the game and shoot bad guys now.
    The T-51 suit should be considerably stronger than the T-60. The T-60, like the T-45 is just cast and riveted steel armor and the T-51 is made up of advanced composites.
    T-51 is supposed to be stronger, and faster, and better protecting than anything but the post-war Enclave armor.
    This stuff bugs me.

      Yeah, they did, but the X-01 hadn't been approved for mass deployment yet, in 2077. It was still a prototype at that point, hence the X-01, "X" standing for "Experimental". However, they weren't U.S. Military guards at Vault 111, they were Vault-Tec guards, who employed T-60 power armor because it was, as Oxhorn stated, deemed for civilian/domestic use. Vault-Tec is a private sector corporation, employed by the military, true enough, but were not given military personnel for guard duty, much less mechanized infantry.

      ChozoSR388 Yes, actually, the soldiers at vault 111 in the beginning were US Army personnel. Vault-Tec security has their own uniforms. They don't wear Army uniforms or have military power armor. And Vault-Tec was contracted by the US military to build the vaults and run their experiments. It was called Project Safehouse. Of course they would send soldiers to the vaults when the attacks were imminent. They were working with Vault-Tec.

      That's way too fucking convenient, plus time to ruin your hopes and dreams by taking a page out of the Fallout wiki.
      "The armor was created by the Enclave's skilled team of engineers and scientists after the Great War, as a result of a research program initiated in 2198, part of a larger project to develop various technologies. In 2215 the first actually superior suit is manufactured, entering service in 2220. Various accidents/explosions/deaths involved in its creation are classified by order of President Dick Richardson for the sake of the morale of the Enclave's personnel.
      It is composed of lightweight metal alloys, reinforced with ceramic castings at key stress points. The motion-assist servo-motors used in the armor appear to be high-quality models as well, giving the wearer a +4 Strength bonus. The suit has an auto-gyro system to keep it upright and the knees can be locked in position, to prevent the wearer from falling over, if, for some reason, he loses consciousness on duty (e.g. takes a nap). Additionally, like the T-51b power armor, it includes a recycling system that can convert human waste into drinkable water, enhancing survival[ and an air conditioning system for comfort.
      It was issued primarily to Enclave troopers operating on the United States mainland, with the Enclave insignia prominently displayed on the breastplate, while rank indicators were usually painted on the shoulders of the armor.
      Later, the advanced power armor Mk II was introduced, and by 2277 it had become the standard-issue Enclave power armor used by all of that organization's military units.
      During the events of Fallout: New Vegas, this model of power armor is associated with the defeated Navarro branch of Enclave, and it is known as Remnants power armor."

    I always figured they were just plans that were never realized, because the bombs dropped. I also figured that the one you see in Nuka World is merely a prototype with that blueprint, but that X-01 suit just simply isn't actually developed until way later because it took 121 years to build up enough infrastructure to start producing power armor.

  • @baron8107
    @baron8107 7 років тому +7

    It was probably just entering the prototype phase before the war. Very few functional models would've been available. Probably intended for use by Special Forces.
    The blueprints and tooling needed to produce more were likely brought out of storage by the military after the bombs fell, and eventually ended up in the hands of the Enclave, who proceeded to try and reduce the material cost, resulting in many deaths.
    The end result? Glorified Combat Armor that only resembles the X-01.

The bunker in the glowing sea shows the X01 being finished a short amount of time after the bombs fell. With the Nuka world one being finished the day of the bombs falling. so it is entirely plausible for this to happen.

      At 1st APA being used by Enclave SINCE 2220.
      Taking from a wiki: "The armor was created by the Enclave's skilled team of engineers and scientists after the Great War, as a result of a research program initiated in 2198, part of a larger project to develop various technologies. Now you MO-RON take your suit of X-01 and go guard the vertibirds!
      2nd And here's a good reason why X-01 is in a display case. In game it has the best stats and most of players would enter Nuka World at high level 40+ so they probably want a good protection at this stage of the game becouse enemies level up with the player. There was no point to make a paitjob for a T-45, T51 or T60 simply becouse people would prefer X-01 for it protection.
      Also T-60 isn't lore friendly as well. I bet in next Todd's fallout they add a new pre-war armor T-64, T-70. Who knows?

    • @oxhorn

    what I can conclude out of the us military developing these suits so close together is for the same resons why the US military today developed the f-22, and the f-35 jet fighters. the f-22 is more expensive and is all around better, but the f-35 is cheaper and easyer to mass produce. I think that the x-01 would be similar to the f-22 in this situation and the t-60 is to the f-35. if this is true then that's probably why the brotherhood of steel has so many because they were mass produces right before the bombs dropped and the brotherhood stumble across some factory or storage location. This is simply what I can make out for the reson for developing them basicly on top of each other.

    I have such better head-lore for the T-60 power armor that would explain a lot of stuff, and is just cooler than cramming it in like Bethesda did. at Adoms airforce base when the Brotherhood defeted the Enclave, they not only built the Prydwen, but also used their newly found resources to improve upon their already in use T-45 power armor. it would explain how the Brotherhood got so many sets of T-60, why they use T-60 in 4 and not in 3, and why the two sets of power armor look so similar. and i just think it's a more interesting and way more awesome explaination for T-60.

    • @LadyTakanashi
      @LadyTakanashi 7 років тому +4

      Going with engineering and how militaries at time refit and upgrade older equipment to prevent having resources go to waste. I believe the T-60 series, is a direct refurbishment and upgrade to the T-45, it would be expensive and honestly bad management to have all T45 be scrapped and straight up replaced than refurbished and upgraded.
      With that in mind that easily explains the similarities between the T-45 and T-60, while also explaining its dissimilarity to the T-51 and X-01, and its commonality.
      In addition, T-60 production I believe it was stated that after the enclaves defeat in the capital wasteland they took the power armor frame production capabilities from them as well as prewar blueprints, and probably saw that the T-60 just in Pre-War Era was far better than what they already had and was easy to reproduce than the enclaves own assortment they developed and fit their ethics and resources better, given the Brotherhood descends from a branch of pre-war military themselves.
      Glad to see someone else had a similar thought process to this bit of continuity, also Bethesda can also ret-con things they want to really, like with power armor frames.

    I like to think that power armor in fo3 and NV was them wearing it without a chasis and then fo4 comes along and people started finding PA chasis around the world and started putting the armor on a chasis .

    Oxhorn I'm in the navy and you were questioning why the military making power armor while a newer version has came out. We do this in the real military like f-35 program. We still are making F-18s. We are still making Arley Burke class destroyers even though the zumwalt class destroyer has surpassed it.

      Also, T-60 looks pretty much like a modified and more-armored T-45. Anyone with an understanding of combat/war/military technology could see that.

    • @ClairisHolm95

      It is simple, the nuclear bombs fell because of anchorage and the war started due to a shortage of resources coursed by the atomic era/discovery (explained prelude fallout 4/lore etc.). The T-60 suit was developed after the X-01 to be more resource efficient, it did not cost as much to mass produce as the X-01 would have been. Primary example of this being F4's power armour crafting system (X-01 requires a lot of materials compared to T-60). Rather genius of Bethesda to put something like that in there, a simple update would fix the load screen lore-breaker or maybe there is more too it...

      I can confirm. Former army, now working at Precision Castparts, we still make engine parts for the Super Hornet, and have been making engine parts for the F-35's F135 engine.

      as i know that was the t45, not the t60 (cheaper to produce)

  • @dyhall

    Regarding your question near the end of the video, the X-01 was probably expensive to produce, considering the materials involved and the bulk of the thing. The military would want to keep a cheaper, more mass-producable suit for regular combat use, AKA the T-60.

  • @hughmann9568
    @hughmann9568 Рік тому +1

    I never thought about this but maybe it was a resource issue and that is why even though the X-01 was already developed they went with the T-60 as it was more similar to the already available T-45.

      If it's already confirmed that advanced power armor and the Mk II variant was developed by the Enclave post war, then it isn't necessary for the "Post-war? Pre-war?" to be in the title. The X-01 is just another retcon that Bethesda made as a superior tier of power armor for the game, and the fact that it highly resembles the advanced power armor from Fallout 2 and is referred to as armor developed before the war really frustrates those who follow closely to the consistency and lore of Fallout.

    • @dude464
      @dude464 8 років тому +3

      Daniel Galicia I guess that makes sense then. I think it's exactly what you said that inspired the thumbnail/title though; as a lot of people, like myself, who were introduced to the series in FO3 may not be as familiar with the other stuff you stated (or even forgot since playing FO3).
      Thing is, the X-01 could simply be the base that the APA was built from, but not necessarily one in the same. There's a lot under those plates that can't be seen, circuitry that could be superior in the APA versions since the X-01 is technically a prototype, which the Enclave may have polished. (just my speculation, you seem to know more about the lore than i)

      a good example in fallout 4 of the old armor system is the mechanist armor you get in the dlc. it's good armor but it's nothing like the power armor but that's how the old power armor felt and it was heavy. now it give you more carry capacity.
