But are Synths truly sentient if they can be mindwiped and reprogrammed like machines? You can brainwash a person, but they can break free of that brainwashing on their own and they can still remember what they experienced and believed before. Children who went through years of racist indoctrination during the Third Reich were still able to shake off that indoctrination and reflect on what they once throught was true and absolute.
A wiped Synth loses all memories of their former existence and completely becomes that new identity. A harmless Synth who loves children can be wiped and programmed to be a merciless savage who feeds babies into a woodchipper and he/she/it wouldn't know that this is wrong due to their former identity knowing that this was wrong. Their old self is gone. Forever. It's literally like formatting a computer and installing a new OS. Your computer doesn't know that it once ran Linux after formatting it and installing Windows.

I'm disappointed that there's no option to unite the three surface factions in an assault on the Institute.
It would require the deleted option where Paladin Danse challenges Arthur Maxon for control of the Brotherhood of Steel.
I envision it thusly: you would have to convince the factions to work together; getting the Railroad and the Brotherhood to get along for this will be the tough part.
First, you have the Minutemen and the Brotherhood activate Liberty Prime. You sent him towards C.I.T. ruins, catching the Institute's full attention, whereupon they deploy their Synth armies to the surface.
While the Institute is distracted by the coalition army and the Iron Giant, you take control of the Institute's teleporter, smuggle a strike team of Railroad operatives, Brotherhood Scribes, and Minutemen in. The Railroad starts the Synth uprising supported by the strike team while the Railroad and the Scribes steal as much research and data as possible. Classic divide and conquer.
When Liberty Prime reaches C.I.T. and blasts a hole in the Institute's roof, the Brotherhood mostly hang back to secure the exit, with the bulk of the assault force comprised of Minutemen going underground to reinforce the strike team and the Synth rebels. The reactor is rigged to blow, the evacuation order is given, the surviving members of the SRB are arrested to be put on trial, everyone gets out of dodge, and you start the fireworks from a safe distance. The Railroad takes custody of the Syths until they can be resettled, the Brotherhood is given the bulk of whatever tech research the strike team recovers, Liberty Prime is reprogrammed to require authorization from the heads of all three factions to operate within the Commonwealth as an act of good faith, and all three factions are given roles in the new CPG.
    The Minutemen are the leading faction, covering local defense and maintaining trade roads like a police force. They keep the trade routes clear of raiders and hostile creatures, set up a coordinated trade network for scavengers and farmers, devise standard operating procedures for things like prospecting, scavenging, treasure hunting, and the like;
    The Railroad act as an intelligence agency and handles Synth affairs for the CPG. They gain Spectacle Island as their own settlement, safe house, and operations center, while there would also be a manufacturing plant designed to supply the factions and the Commonwealth with weapons, armor, ammunition, and equipment;
And the Brotherhood of Steel are kept as a hired mercenary force, allowed to conduct their tech salvage missions and given a stipend from the CPG in return for aiding the Minutemen in clearing out raiders, super mutants, and hostile wildlife, so long as they agree to let free Synths and sentient Ghouls be, and to allow the people of the Commonwealth to keep the less dangerous tech they need to rebuild. Recovered intel and information would be shared collectively with the other factions, and they would be called in to safely recover and/or deal with technology that is too dangerous for common people, can't be used without a proper industrial infrastructure, or just so weird and outside context that the Brotherhood have the only people who can make sense of it.
There would be joint operations and campaigns for the three factions, such as retaking Quincy and finally shutting down the Gunners for good, wiping out the raiders of Nuka-World, clearing out all hostile bands of Super Mutants from Boston, ect. For the Gunners example, the Railroad could infiltrate the group if they haven't already, relay information about where all Gunner strongholds are and what kind of forces they possess, sabotage their communications network, assassinate key officers, exacerbate rivalries, instigate mutinies, stuff like that. The Minutemen would use their network of artillery to bombard Gunner outposts and strongholds, and then work with the Brotherhood of Steel to rapidly deploy armored ground forces with vertibirds to sweep in and mop up.
    What do you guys think?
Edit: I think someone made a BBC-esque mockumentary on UA-cam using many of the ideas I listed here.

This would have been the "Golden Ending", IMHO. Even better would be convincing the Institute to stop having a god complex and use their technology for good, essentially uniting every single faction together. If you were the elder of the Brotherhood, you could promote Danse to it so there's no conflict of interest. Imagine the last conversation being between the minutemen, railroad, institute, and even the Brotherhood of Steel for who should be the first President of the Commonwealth. That would be a great way to end the game: rebuilding from the ashes, coming together to form something greater, and using everyone's strengths for the good of all. Imagine a set of Power Armor designed for the Brotherhood by the Commonwealth. Would have been a much more interesting end than just "Institute nuked. Ded."

The technology is the problem. Note, Fallout's world, specifically in Fallout 1. After catastrophe, if the knowledge isn't shared or preserved, the tech destroyed is lost... possibly for hundreds of years. Destroying the institute, tech and all, rids the knowledge of how to replicate the tech, as well. Best thing to do would have been a purging of all personnel in the building who do not surrender, and destroy the Synth production facility.

    • @Cramblit
      @Cramblit 7 років тому +79

You're assuming there are any people smart enough, or have the knowledge left to create what they created. It may forever be out of their reach.
Take a real world example. Nikola Tesla. Did things with electricity and technology that our brightest minds of today have absolutely no fucking clue how he did it. Yet it's proven that he did do it.
Then you're ignoring how the Common Wealth is a complete shit stain of a place to live. It's comparative to the outbacks of the Middle East in today's world. Despite there being 1st world countries teeming with this technology, if we gave a bunch of common people living in huts in Africa, or the MIddle East who knew about electricity and it existed, or knew about cloning and hell even the theory behind it and told them, alright.. everyoenn else in the world is shooting into space now, so... figure it out on your own, nobody will be left, and neither will out technology.. How long do you think it'd take for them to actually achieve it? Probably another 600 years without outside intervention.
and even if someone, in another 800 years does figure it out.. assuming the Common Wealth stabalizes itself enough for that to actually happen. Why go through another many hundreds of years before making the human race advance again? When you had the chance here and now?
      Whole thing is stupid.
ANd if my "800 years" thing sounds like a stretch or you're thinking "god, it wouldn't take THAT Long!"
Here's another real world history example. Medieval Ages which could be compared to the Common Wealth in terms of stability. Compared to the Roman Era which can be compared to the institute in comparison to stability and tech difference between the two.
Rome had running water, sewer systems, advanced math. Romans had advanced armors and metal smithing, and technology. They knew about electricity, could even make it, were on the road to improving their ships, and were probably just a few hundred years away from the renaissance level of technology.
Then Rome fell. This could be compared to the institute being blown up and losing all the tech. The medieval ages start in 476 AD.
Medieval Ages: No running water, no sewers, very poor understanding of architecture, farming, no knowledge of electricity. Their metalsmithing knowledge dropped back back by hundreds of years, their philosophies, and governments were barbaric, and their knowledge of even writing dropped to just the most rich, or church leaders knowing how to read and write. With sicknesses running rampant, and knowledge of cures almost non existant.
This would last until around 1300's when their technology and understanding would equal the Roman Empire, but wouldn't completely match the Roman Empire in technology until 1400's. That's 900 HUNDRED years before that lost technology was recovered, and all we're talking about here is simple sewers, writing, and philosophy, not genetic engineering... Yet it took us in the real world 900 years to recover that simple technology.

They had the facilities to produce non-sapient robots as shown by the layout of their lab. Why go through all that trouble just to create rebellious, feeling slaves that have personal needs? Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for absolutely no reason.
"Synths are expected to behave... like machines..."

Naaah, to simple and logical, let's make self-aware machines instead then ENSLAVE THEM to our bidding, because that sure as hell will work out, yeah?

The reason the synths have feelings and personal needs is so they can infiltrate and blend in naturally with the rest of the Commonwealth while still remaining agents of the Institute. It's what allows them to have intel on places like Diamond City.
And they do have synths that are just machines with no emotions whatsoever. Coursers and Gen 2's are, for the most part, just that.

It showed that the evacuation did not completely work as Binet's family died in the blast driving him to suicide. He was a supporter of the railroad that felt betrayed by them. Desdemona lies to the railroad saying he died in the blast rather than the truth about his suicide. Even giving him a send off in front of the railroad hailing him as a great agent despite him hating them. This cover up added more shades of grey to the railroad.

I was also surprised to see Oxhorn not mention this. Because Liam feels that you betrayed him he says “I used to feel sorry for you. You lost your son. You missed out on every moment of his life. Now, I see it's only what you deserved.” The audacity to say this demonstrates the hatred he now feels for you.
He also says “Due to my stupid trust in you I've destroyed humanity's best hope for the future.” so it seems that Liam still believed in the Institute despite his actions in freeing synths. I should point out that this is similar to what Shaun says “The Institute... It's important. It really is humanity's best hope for the future, no matter what those above ground might think of us.” Liam evidently feels the same way, which is perplexing to say the least. He is the sole reason that synths are able to escape, and yet he doesn’t think the Institute should be destroyed, even if you engaged the evacuation protocol beforehand.

With synths being the biggest slaves and the atrocities that the institute have done their focus in this story was to free synths and to stop the institute. If someone has emotions that are identical to human emotions, as well as a body that is identical, and they are in slavery, that's morally wrong. If its a manufacturing error thats the fault of the manufacturer, but you still have a moral duty to free the person suffering.

Also, we don't know how much of the mind is destroyed during the process.
A person suffering from memory loss doesn't lose his entire personality either.
He still has the personality he gained through memories.

Even if you disagree with that- personalities are also related to genetics, not just memories.

    • @captainzac24

Surely by volunteering for the procedure you remove the unethical element. Synths have free will meaning they have the right to choose to wipe their mind.
That being said you have to ask what the f****** point of freeing someone is if they are just going to destroy their personality. in the end that synth you pulled from the institute isn't free and running around he's dead. It might be a voluntary death but it then invalidated the whole reason you freed them. You might as well shoot the synth and go have a baby the results are more or less the same.

Both have different goals. Railroad will only work with people who want to save synths, but the Minutemen will work with anyone who can shoot and will help defend settlements. That means there are plenty of ghoul/synth haters in the Minutemen. Even if as an organisation they have no problem with either group in principle, plenty of members would likely lynch any synths they find.

Watching for the first time in 2 years after a recent playthrough, I feel that the tandem ending between Minutemen and railroad would be an ultimate win for the commonwealth. With a huge threat to the people being taken away and the population resting easy at night, there will be more time to rebuild. Not to mention the giant influx of doctors, scientist, mechanical engineers and workforce coming above ground with Minutemen settlements to call salvation, the commonwealth will grow. With advances in technology and cleaner water and more sustainable energy from scientist and engineers saved, more will get accomplished in a shorter time. Even if the sole survivor only sides with the railroad, Preston will still be inside the museum of freedom, and you can still save them, and you can still rebuild. It is a slower fix to the problems of the commonwealth, but with a better long term pay off

Like divisions in our own modern government, the railroad could be part of the Minutemen and still function the way it wants to. And banding together, the railroad and Minutemen could accomplish more for the better of a commonwealth as a whole. The railroad would not be able to maintain control over the Commonwealth, they are too small for that... But them and the Minutemen share the common goal of wanting to help people and to that end they would be better off joining forces. It could mean more protection for the railroad, and in helping synths it could also mean new members to join the minutemen's efforts. Together they could protect the people, including synths, at a moment's notice.

I love the railroad but honestly don't think Desdemona would ever want to give up their independence. She does acknowledge the Minutemen's strength as a military force, but thinks their organization too good/focused for them. Preston, on the other hand, is a softie and pretty much follows everything you say for some reason so I think he wouldn't mind if they combined forces (my thought is that if your Sole Survivor replaces Desdemona as the leader of the Railroad you could easily become the covert wing of the Minutemen, something like the CIA). Only problem is that with the institute gone, you don't really need a covert team anymore? There'd be a ton of work to do finding synths homes (and not to mention, finding a bunch of institute scientists homes). But besides to clear places out for them to live and provide material support and defense until they get on their feet, their underground operations are not that necessary anymore. Certainly, bigotry would be in no short supply in the commonwealth and since mind wipes are the only "easy" method to deal with this, helping synths adapt and stay safe in the new commonwealth wouldn't be a bad purpose. They could easily do this in the shadow of the Minutemen and not come into conflict with them, and coordinate efforts to keep their communities, whether synth or human, safe. Wow. I wrote an essay lol

I really think that by siding with the railroads, you simply fulfill the campaign to save synths and to destroy the Institute, and compares to the others, they did it much more cleanly, with much less casualties and chaos.
After that, the job is done, the "Saving the Commonwealth" part is left over to SS, who is also happens to be the Miniutemen's generals. The Railroads can then just offer additional helps should the need arises, for example, in my play-through, the railroads guard checkpoints and offer vertibird transportations, the minutemen solves everything else that railroads don't.
There's a reason Minuteman has no quest involves destroying railroads, because I find that they are both meant to co-operate, with minutemen taking care of the commonwealth's human problems and railroads taking care of commonwealth's synths problems.
One REAL flaw I have with the Railroad however, is their lack of procedures after the mind-wipe process, they just set the newly reborn synths loose without much guidance, and in this kind of world, it's easily for them to end up becoming raiders, and the Railroad doesn't really try to remedy this issue. (A problem that mostly stems from the fact that they are more concerned with helping the other slave synths, so after the main story is done I suspect that they will take more responsibilities, as well as changing their methods because mind-wipe is no longer generally needed now that the institute is dusted)

My first play through, I sided with the Railroad. It was pretty obvious to me that the synths were people too, at least that's what I told myself. I believed that right up until synth Shawn showed up. I looked at him in disgust and said to myself, that's not my son, that's just a synth replacement. Just a synth. The problem isn't whether or not the Railroad is good or bad, but rather the need for them. They have one goal, and a narrow one at that. To free synths is why they exist, and that's fine and all but it has no long term purpose. Once the institute is gone, what purpose does the Railroad serve? They don't help rebuild anything civilization wise, they aren't really ones to lead anything, and at most they would just be there to try and help with the integration of synths into the commonwealth.
Outside of that they have no purpose, no long term success. They are a very here and now organization where as the Brotherhood, Minutemen and the Institute are aiming for a more future centric mindset. The Minutemen want to bring the people of the commonwealth together in order to provide a community and rebuild civilization where people can prosper. The Brotherhood, while zealous and misguided, want to protect people from the horrors of technology that lead to the future that they all live in now. The Institute wants to rebuild society in their image. And yes, this play god mentality of theirs is problematic, foolish, and even sinister at times, they are doing so in hopes to rebuild a world that is better than the one that came before it. Each one of the other factions have a far better grasp of their purpose and future than the Railroad does.
Heck, even the raider gangs of Nuka World have a better grasp of their goals and future than the Railroad does. They may live in the now with a childish mentality of take what they want, but they seek territory and control for a reason.

Lumine Le8lanc I did that too, but mostly because I wanted an explainable reason to use energy weapons and Power Armor as a Railroad Agent lmao

Minutemen have been shown to be unreliable without a strong leader and Railroad are too busy fucking toasters, BOS gets shit done and then splits

The BOS isn't exactly all that bright, either, to put the core of their operations in a freaking blimp.

Legit, I love the Railroad. I love the fact that despite them becoming desperate after nearly being wiped out, they don't give up.
They have a mission, and that mission is to save every synth in the Institute, or die trying.
But I wish for Desdemona to actually see the forest made up of all the trees. To realize that humans may have their flaws, but most of them would be willing to lend the Railroad a hand, if the Railroad lent them one first. To put her hatred of the Commonwealth's people aside and work alongside the Minutemen to destroy the Institute and the BoS. Then the Railroad can do what they do best, while the Minutemen can do what they do best. That would be the perfect ending imo.
Here's the real pain point for me:
Desdemona asks you if you're willing to risk your life for your fellow man, even if that man is a synth. But the impression I get from her is that she would only risk her life for her fellow man if that man was a synth.
Humans? Screw 'em. Let them all die.
Synths? Must protect at all costs!

1:08 damn, every faction should know not to f*ck with the sole survivor when she just turned a brotherhood knight into goo even though he's wearing power armor

Dates back to the Underground Railroad > Harriet Tubman code-name "Moses" > There are no code-names for "Moses" > perfect spot for really cool reference > Bathesda DOSEN'T add it > Makes the whole Railroad suck.

If the wiping of memory equates to the destruction of a person, then what the Railroad does is supporting a form of assisted suicide. It is a non-starter for many.

But for those who have no issue with assisted suicide and value freedom above all else, the Railroad are still indisputably good guys.

@@amberkat8147 There is a wide variety of reasons for someone to want to end his life. Not all of them are valid to everyone. I suspect most are not comfortable with the idea of helping someone end his life when there is no physical pain or irrecoverable illness involved.

I think it would be really really really cool if there was the option to unite all four factions together, convincing them to use their strengths for the good of the commonwealth. The ending should be incredibly hard to get, as convincing them to get along would be incredibly difficult, especially convincing the Institute and BoS to coexist. (It would require the cut content of Danse challenging Maxson for the title of Elder) But think about it, after convincing the Railroad and Brotherhood to cooperate, you could take over the teleporter and send minutemen, BoS soldiers and railroad agents in, along with the rebel synths, but with the goal of subduing the Institute, not blowing it up. You could force Father to make you the new Director, from there you could convince the Institute to work with you to better the commonwealth and not have a god complex, from there a new CPG could be established, Liberty Prime would require authorization from the leaders of all 4 factions to operate (You, Danse, and Desdemona) as a gesture of trust and all four factions have roles in the new CPG. The Minutemen are the main faction, it is their flags that don Diamond City and they are the primary military force and keep the roads safe, the Railroad are in charge of protecting Synths specifically rather than the people of the Commonwealth as a whole, the Brotherhood are allowed to continue their tech salvaging missions as well as receiving some prewar tech from the CPG, in exchange they act as a hired mercenary force and assist the Minutemen in exterminating *hostile* Super Mutants and Feral Ghouls, just as long as they don’t harm any sentient ones that mean no harm. The Institute is the leading force in making scientific advancements in the Commonwealth, they are allowed to conduct any experiments they please as long as those experiments don’t hurt anyone, in exchange, their scientific research goes towards helping the Commonwealth, and they use their technology to instantly transport goods between settlements, greatly improving supply lines as well as allowing the Minutemen to LITERALLY get to any settlement in need of help ‘at a minute’s notice’ (by teleporting Minutemen to settlements in need of aid, as well as using their synths to assist the Minutemen if necessary) Think about the potential if they all worked together, it’s a shame this ending doesn’t exist.
