Always ask if the head gasket recall has been done. I bought mine and the purge valve went out (which was a recall on all Focuses), so I replaced it myself with no issues. Easy fix.
YES! I knew i was forgetting something MAJOR. Very Very important to ask about this. It was done at 3k miles on this car that I bought, most RS owners took it serious luckily
I just saw a video on visually checking the gasket. The correct gasket pokes out a bit and has a brass rivet. You can see it (or not) if you take the cover off and take some flashlit pictures down low on the block
Hey Cameron big fan here, I just bought a 2018 Ford Focus RS with 10,000 miles on it, I am trading in my 2015 Ford Focus ST. While I was learning more about tuning I stumbled across your videos and started watching and learned so much. Thank you for all you do and hope to run into you in the future.
Excellent!! I have a '17 R1 bought new an 04/18 f/ $35100 (3 months of negotiating trading in mt '13 ST for a $10.5K trade in. Added a Cob Mountune AP Access, Enhanced Intercooler, Cobb optimed tune map, and a K&N wet air filter. I am taking on Mustang 5.0"s from a dig up to 60mph (under safe conditions). Love it! Keep doing what you are doing!!! :-)
I lucked out and found a RR ‘18 RS in 2021 with 4400 miles on it. Barely used and well maintained. It is now my daily driver, and I look forward to the commute every day. Since I rely on it, and it’s in such good shape, I am hesitant to launch it or try drift mode. That said, the comment about the Quaife LSD making it more playful when drifting has me intrigued, and I may have to test that out when I get an opportunity.
Just bought a 2016 with 47k miles 100% stock. Great deal (30k), totally babied, and went into the dealer for service every 3-5k miles (I knew I was buying it after I looked at the Carfax). Was a trade in for a nice truck at the dealer I was buying it at. Tried drift mode once so far, and I feel you on that, I'd rather keep it in super good shape and not mess with that. Paint is almost perfect with just two rock chips on the front bumper, after the last few I looked at, I knew this was the one finally. Probably gonna keep it mostly stock with just a few things, like an exhaust, and an intake, and rims for summer tires (I live where the weather is bad enough, snow tires are recommended)
Hey so i just stepped made 155k km so right about 100k miles. Love it and it will love you back. 0 problems with mine with regular maintanence and not killing it every day 😂👍
Note about the oil: if they use 0W-40 ask if it has the Ford WSS spec. 0W-40 oils around the world met the spec when the car was released, but only the Motorcraft one met the spec in the US. Today, there's several oils that meet Ford WSS spec and using 0W-40 is technically the correct spec. Note about the block: the open deck isn't the problem, the stock connecting rods are. Once you go over 400whp you risk bending a rod and that's what punches a hole in your engine.
Thanks for all the great videos. I just picked myself up a 2017 RS that came into work with 58k miles, paid 28k for it, which included a 72/75k warranty. So far, im in love with the car handles better than my 15 Mustang, just not as loud.
Have a 2017 NB rs. I feel i got Lucky, this car was super clean. Someone loved this car and i am continuing the tradition. I paid for it for sure at 32.5k for a car with 72k miles but i feel like i got middle of the road deal. Not great but not terrible.its rs 2 with all options. I have put 6-7k miles on it so far. Love it. I want more power but that is always the case lol. Honestly tho, this car is crazy fun stock. Get 1. Also thank you Cameron for all of the rs content.
Literally one of the best car videos I’ve ever seen. Also, I saw this car for sale a month or so ago while window shopping. Hopefully one day I’ll own one of these bad boys.
Another thing to look out for: 2016 models actually do NOT come compatible with Apple Car Play out the box, you need to swap the USB port. Easy fix, but to be aware of! And yep, I used Drift Mode… twice. Once in the rain. No urge ever to use it.
I found that out the hard way on my ST. Tried updating it several times, even altered the file so it would take it in two halves. Apparently theres a “nav” version of the big screen also that has a totally separate unit plugged into the back. Pain in the ass. Classic Ford stuff
Focus Rs and St come with lots of "toe in" on the tire alignment from factory. My St was already showing uneven tire wear at 15K miles with normal tire rotations.
I did drift mode only once and in the wet lol. 2017 RS2 Stealth Grey from the show room floor. Just turned 19K 2 days ago. Gasket recall done, leak down test was a pass. Love this RS baby, no regrets. K&N air filter and AWE Track Edition muffler delete [Deeper sound]. Nice Video/informative.
I'm an "Old Guy" and had a 2011 STI 5 door hatch (wagon) and was really dissapointed Subaru never offered the wagon again....Loved that car....Bought it with 92K miles but, it had been well maintained (timing belts, new Mishimoto radiator, silicone hoses) I put new braided brake lines/slotted rotors, HP brake pads on it and added a quality coil over suspension then drove it to just over 150,000 miles....No issues and where I live it's a LONG COLD winter. At 150K I was deciding if I wanted to keep it, but decided it was time to part ways....Loved that STI....was never "tuned" and still running like a champ when I sold it. I considered an RS to replace it but, insurance costs even for an "old fart" like me were kind of crazy! otherwise an RS would be in my garage right now.
VW can fill that hole. The GTI comes in a 4 door variant with a awesome 6 speed or a DSG. Has awesome tuning potential as mine makes ~460whp and is emissions compliant. It can come with a LSD if you get a SE with the Performance Package or a Autobahn and since it’s a electronic diff… tourqe vectoring. Alternatively you could get a R and have AWD. Amazing platform just make sure you get one after 2015 with Gen 3 EA888.
Full coverage on my RS is the same as basic coverage on my 2003 Suburban. I have a perfect driving record but that only justified the cheap full coverage, not the high $ base coverage on the Burb. My base insurance on my 1999 CRV is almost the same as the other 2... $1500 a year total for all 3 policies is no big deal. Your driving record must suck a fat 🌭
I just picked up a 16 rs2 in nitrous blue with 25k miles on it. It is in great condition I would say a 9 of 10 but getting it flawless. Have an st that in have thrown everything mod to it possible and love it. Going to have the rs trans and diff built one day. Been a blast to own so far. Completely different car from the st. Both are equally enjoyable to drive
The open deck remarks at 14:10 are not true. This is not the reason the block (NOT the head; the head is fine and used in all builds) fails. There's a TON of misinformation in RS groups about this, with builders coming in to try and set things straight but no one listens. There are plenty of other race platforms (Honda K, etc.) with open decks as they provide superior cooling. The problem with the RS block is bad engineering of the outer wall around the cooling jacket between cyl 2+3 that cracks when the naturally higher cylinder wall deflection of an open deck block is increased too much. Speed Perf6ormanc3 has an excellent video on their channel with a cross-section showing this. The stock block, according to almost every builder, is good to at least 500WHP once you put forged internals in it. A few Euro guys have been running it unmodified higher than that for tens of thousands of miles. If you want to exceed 500WHP it can be done on this block with modifications, but it's much more economical to switch it out for a 2.0TS block. That being said, putting a big turbo in this car before building the bottom end IS ridiculous, and something you SHOULD be worried about as it points to a lack of knowledge in the person who did it. The "reliable" limit of the stock bottom end is roughly 400WHP (technically it has more to do with torque) and the stock turbo can easily get you there with very little modification (literally just a filter, FMIC, and downpipe) and E30.
currently thinking about buying a 2018 ( I am like 80-90% there :D ) with under 60k kilometer in the clock (37k miles) it has it story but the fix was done in a Ford ASC that is selling it and I got the invoice for the replaced parts by the ASC so looks legit, the same goes for wheel geometry so I am relatively hyped no tuning done so that's a plus for me and the Ford ASC/Seller is putting on 3 years of guarantee on it
My RS was totaled a month ago and I’m upset I didn’t see this while searching for another. Might have deterred me from buying the one I did. I found an RS with 30k miles on it with the elusive system too lean bank 1 code. Paid to have a 160 point inspection (outside from dealer) and only issue is the code *claimed to be from a tune* Was confirmed that there is aftermarket tuning on the car. How aggressive… I dunno yet car will be here Wednesday and will immediately go to a reputable mechanic for this platform. Anyways, I’m excited and a little uneasy but watching your videos makes me excited to hopefully keep this one forever. Wish me luck 😅

I should’ve been more diligent about doing this before buying it from the stealership. Dents, cracking paint, missing trim inside. I was blinded by how much I wanted the car🤣
How Many bad sensors have you replaced? What problema are you experiencing besides modes being off? Stiff direction?, spedometer doesnt work? Abs light?
Hey Cam, i have a 2017 RS that is stage 2.. I’ve been noticing lack of pops and burbles. Coolant is fine, im on cold plugs with a smaller gap size, and my valves are fully walnut blasted along with ccv/pcv catch cans.. what do you think the issue is?
I have a 2017 RS2 also, pops and burbles were fine and got crazy louder and more pops when I replaced the exhaust with AWE Track Edition muffler delete. Tune is all stock.
Had a 17 rs2 . Black . All aftermarket exhaust and under the hood. She fuckin screamed down the highway Edit. Finding the 5w-50 oil was a pain in the ass until i sourced it from ford
I’m having a hard time understating why or rather how ford’s engineering team sat down to design this car and thought hmm… should we give it a limited slip diff? And somehow landed on no.
Wow. This is NOT really helpful, at least with respect to the driveline. A 2018 Limited Edition and all previous years with the RS2 package have a helical front diff, instead of an open diff. Relatedly, the statement that all diffs on an RS are open is very misleading, because they all have only one diff; the rears are connected by two separate clutch-packs, not a diff. Rally cars don't have center diffs any more.
@Jay Dee the open deck has not “had cars breaking down” the car isn’t built for big power and there is nothing wrong with that like he stated. If you want a car for straight line speed then buy something else.

Rs2 comes with an lsd.... that is a huge deal
How much was it and how many miles do you have?
At stock power, the stock clutch can handle 10,000 launch control launches *under warranty*
I should’ve been more diligent about doing this before buying it from the stealership. Dents, cracking paint, missing trim inside. I was blinded by how much I wanted the car🤣
Seriously happens to the best of us!! Even me!!
If the cloth seats need to be reconditioned cause it looks worn but no rips or tears, should that be a red flag or can they be easily reconditioned?
You Can use liquid leather to make them new again, shouldnt be a deal breaker, focus on mechanical stuff
@@WardAkali ok thanks
Should an intercooler on stock tune scare me?
Have you sold the car? I’d love to potentially buy it.
I keep having wheel speed sensor failure. Turns off all drive modes. Did ford use crappy sensors?
How Many bad sensors have you replaced? What problema are you experiencing besides modes being off? Stiff direction?, spedometer doesnt work? Abs light?
@@WardAkali I had two bad wheel sensors. I replaced all four just to make sure. I haven't had any more issues with losing my drive modes.
Depending on what tune, I've heard people say the pops and burbles fade away over time. Reflashing the tune usually helps.
I have a 2017 RS2 also, pops and burbles were fine and got crazy louder and more pops when I replaced the exhaust with AWE Track Edition muffler delete. Tune is all stock.
Not mentioning the winter wheel package, for shame...
What's up with Cobb maps?
is this rs tuned?
Had a 17 rs2 . Black . All aftermarket exhaust and under the hood. She fuckin screamed down the highway
Edit. Finding the 5w-50 oil was a pain in the ass until i sourced it from ford
Hi
Wary and weary mean different things

I’m having a hard time understating why or rather how ford’s engineering team sat down to design this car and thought hmm… should we give it a limited slip diff? And somehow landed on no.
to be fair, the 2018 does have an LSD stock.
they never came with cup 2's
I hate plastic boost with plastic intake manifold and valve cover....................
Don’t these cars have hella problems
Big time.
No idea what anything "hella" refers to.
@PasleyAviationPhotography means "alot"
You just told us everything to look out for in car nothing special of a rs
You should know that the engine is unreliable just like all ECOBOOST Engines are and that the Civic Type R is a better Car.
1st
Better off buying the mazdaspeed 3 than the focus bad engine block defect
Nothing wrong with them. Just not built for big power from factory and that’s ok
@Jay Dee the open deck has not “had cars breaking down” the car isn’t built for big power and there is nothing wrong with that like he stated. If you want a car for straight line speed then buy something else.
You talking about early 2016 blocks from Spain?
I think I’m ready to send it and get mine 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
