@@dcptiv I have the regular V40 with a five pot engine and the main complaint is the aircon. I find it just doesn't get cold enough. Reliability wise it's been solid, nothing's gone wrong except for the diaphragm in the pcv/breather box. (Replacing the breather box was about $1000).

Some fuses faild but easy fix, one point was drivinf no speedo or any electric gadget or radio. I forgot st 180K KM transmission faild leaking red oil everywere. and 2nd geanr syncros. I did fix it with a used trans costed me 3k not worth it bc after 30k milage it felt so notchy it was going to happen again. At 260K km I decided to trade this crap.
I've owned my 2016 LZ FoST since new and just passed 144,000km in it. It has never missed a beat, a lot of fun every day. That little fold down bin in the dash next to the door is perfect to stash work swipe cards or spare keys (for another car) and some coins as well. I've not experienced any of the "issues" you mention in this review, no dash rattles, car is still like new. A great car I still enjoy driving, which is something special after eight years! There are people on the forums with unmodified LZ's with high mileage, including a 2016 with 400,000km and no issues. Impressive if well maintained and unmodified.
2018 Bone stock, regular maintenance, started drinking coolant at 132,000 miles. Replacement head did not fix the issue, likely a cracked block. A real problem with the 2 liter engine.
i helped a friend buy a focus ST, earlier model as he wanted one. some were terrible. we found one that was decent and i was worried about its reliability. 2 yrs on and its still great
Hello from Scotland! Loved the video it popped up in my recommended. I've owned my 2017 Stealth Grey ST-3 petrol hatch for nearly 5 years now and I absolutely love it. For a design that came out in 2011 and a refresh in 2015 it still gets so much attention today. I've spent a lot on it and it has been very well looked after it's whole life. Just a minor ECU tune of around 300bhp/500Nm torque as predicted from another ST and it happily returns 37mpg average and over 400 miles to a tank. No other mods apart from the Maxon kit. Unsure if the UK models are different but it handles the power well and now approaching 50K miles it's always been mechanically strong and it's never skipped a beat, only a new battery this year! I was wowed at how clean the front end of your example in this video is, unfortunately the harsher conditions and poor roads in the north here are obvious, up close mines looking a little rough with a few stone chips here and there. In all honesty though the 2L Ecoboost has been such a reliable, fun and delivering engine to live with and this car as a whole is a good all rounder.
I owned a 2013 ST-2 from new. Sold it 10 years and 50k miles later for exactly half of what I paid new. In all my 10 years of ownership, I replaced the battery after 7 years and two sets of windscreen wipers. Great car. Loved it.
As an RS owner, these cars are the same as any good performance car: take care of it and it'll take care of you. They're fun and fast and surprisingly inexpensive to keep on the road, especially if you do your own maintenance. Make sure you find a well taken care of one and you're good to go
I live in the UK and have a 2017 Focus ST3. It came with 19" alloys and I fitted aftermarket 18" ones which made it more comfortable and reduced handling issues like tramlining, I've had the Mountune MP275 upgrade fitted for more power plus their engine mount which improved traction off the line. Since then I've had Mountune's lowering springs fitted which has made the car feel less crashy. It was already far less harsh than a Fiesta ST but it's now even better and handles great and torque steer isn't really a noticeable issue. I did experience a couple of the issues mentioned in this video, like the door seals coming loose, but I glued them back on a few years back and they've been fine since. It's been a very reliable car for 7 years now. If you're worried about keyless theft get a faraday bag to keep your key in. I also didn't know my seats folded flat!
I've owned a MY13 Focus ST Ecoboost manual, MY14 Fiesta Sport Ecoboost manual, a MY17 Mustang Ecoboost manual and now in a MY23 Mustang Ecoboost HPP manual. My partner is also in a MY22 Puma ST-Line Ecoboost. I've had my fair share and they have all been awesome. My sister even had an Ecosport Ecoboost manual. If you ever want to review one of the last manual Mustang Ecoboost HPP and Puma ST-Line V auto at once let me know!
I've never really understood why the Golf Gti is the standard car of comparison, its down about 50hp (against the international models) and has a more 'warm hatch' 0-100 in the ~6.5sec range
There's a reason the golfs are given the best all rounder title, they are somewhat reliable(EA888.3, I wouldnt touch an auto gearbox with a stick personally), they have the best interiors in their segment (prior to golf 8 lol), they fly under the radar and in the real world they're as fast as you need a car to be.
@@hailfastcorehow so? In almost any comparison test, this car (Focus), the Renault Megane RS, and Civic type R are always lauded to be more dynamic and fun.
Love my ST. Bought it new in 2016 (US) and over the years I modified it slowly. 8 yrs later and I've done just about every bolt on, Fortune Auto Coilovers, Quaife LSD, larger Garrett turbo, built motor etc. Currently at 350 WHP. Will be running straight E85 soon which will bump it up to 420 ish.
Always love your videos mate but definitely a new found respect to know your daily is a Fiesta ST. I have a 2021 and it's an absolute super car for poor people!
I have a 2016 ST & love it. It has 161km's & is driven every day (spirited at times) 😜 & I haven't had any issues. Most under rated car ever. PS, great channel 👍🏼. Cheers Wayne
I've just bought a white 15 reg estate/wagon ST2, and I'm loving it. It's got 75k miles on it, and the interior is absolutely immaculate. The torque steering isn't nearly as bad as I had expected after watching a lot of reviews. A little torque steer is fun.
At one stage, I owned a 2020 Fiesta ST, while my sister drove a 2017 Focus RS, and brother in law drove a 2021 Focus ST (in auto no less). I was spoilt for choice and got to drive the others a fair bit. Each of them fun in their own way. That Focus ST auto was surprisingly rapid.
I've had my 2013 since 2017, admittedly I've had 1 engine failure, but in saying that I have basically every bolt on and a substantially bigger turbo ( 285kw at the wheels) but as they said, with 10k oil.change intervals, a good catch can setup with check valves and being mindful of carbon buildup on intake valves (inspect/clean intake valves) they are a solid, fun car! And pretty easy to work on also, I can swap an engine under the carport with no real fuss, great little hot hatch for someone who wants an entry level tuner car to mess with
Don’t use silicon to fix leaks, use butyl sealant. Easy to use, cheap, 100% effective - it’s what boat builders use to seal hulls - and it’ll probably outlast the car 🙂
I had this crap mk 3 focus ST for 6 years I regret buying this one bc the 252hp felt more like 180 hp wow thanks ford. at 180k milage it was leaking engine oil rear main seal. transmission oil clutch start slipping 2nd gear syncro colant leaking fan malfunction to cool down. tension chain Motor mounts colant leak. suspension shocks. I’ve owned one of these for 3 years and the RS for 1 year, I drove pretty much every other hot hatch, this is the best bang for buck hot hatch out there. ST is a much a better daily than a RS as well
I bough a new one in 2015. It was a good car, I averaged 7.2l/100km on it. But the interior build quality was a bit shite. buttons popping of and plastics unclipping before 700km on the clock. I don't have kids, meaning some items unclipped on first usage. I sold mine before the warranty expired fearing mechanical issues. Good to know its actually not too bad. The GTI did feel more "solid" though..
Nice, been waiting for this one! Great review! As an Aussie Focus ST owner for the past 5 years, I concur with everything in this video (except that the face lift is the better looking one lol)
sweet I literally just bought my first car a 2016 Focus St. One of these but in white. Learning to drive on it too Super stoked, but then i started reading about all this ecoboom stuff. Really had me worried. This video kinda helped calm me down a little bit. Glad these guys put this video out! what are the odds? 😅 I've had it for two weeks i love it so much
Love the Focus ST. I ran a turbo diesel ST3 2.0 for 3 years and it was fun and very reliable. Also it sounded very nice. However, I would have to disagree on the drive/fun comparison against the RS. The RS is on a totally different level and if you can afford one and are considering a ford product you should bite the bullet and buy one 👍
I had a friend who did 180,000kms in a series 2 and said he didn't have any problems with it. It was totally stock and well serviced. Top many boy racers modify this and other hot hatches, which causes problems. I'm also hearing that a few GR Corollas are blowing motors when modified
I have the mk4 now. With my MK3 I had the door seal problems. The leaky boot problem (nightmare) and faulty adaptive headlights. Also having problems with adaptive headlights on my MK4... despite all this. They are real fun to drive.
Definitely a forgotten about little gem but the Mazda 3 and Kia Proc'eed GT are the ones I'd go for. Surprisingly fuel efficient for the size of the motor it has. It's good to see that it's the usual case of piss poor mods and driver negligence that cause the main issues mechanically. Good video as always guys and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
This has to be the best car review channel out there. Please keep the vids coming! Much love from the U.S. (Also day 1 of asking for the Kona N if possible since im trying to decide between a ST and a Kona N)
I've owned my 2013 ST-2 for a year now here in the UK. It's been a great car to drive and do maintenance on, while the only failure I've had is the radiator leaking. That was about £120 for a new Nissens one. With any performance car, I'd try and find one that is standard with lots of history but that is my personal preference
Had a 1.6 Focus with the supposedly dreaded twin clutch transmission... Loved it, bit underpowered but it loved a bit of right boot and was sooo economical. Miss that car, handled great too.
Your ownership experience regarding the twin-clutch transmission doesn't represent the experience of a lot of owners. Even the most problematic automaker model or component can have the occasional reliable "UNICORN ".
Got mine 2018 US Mk3 with 88k km for about 1.5 years now as a daily - such a nice car to drive! Got everything I need from Mountune/Cobb (basically all performance and drivetrain modifications) and then complemented it with an eTune from Alan (Edge Autosport). 268 whp and 480 torque - for a car with this weight and size - it's a blast (do not consider to go with a big turbo though, since I'm rarely doing spools above 130 km/h). Also GTI's (the same year and mileage) are more expensive in my area (and Hyundai's N-division cars barely hit the road), so for a pricetag of ST you got a looot of car (especially in my case with carbon elements, Recaro's and sunroof). Will change it only for something with AWD and three pedals🙂
Son has a 2018 ST, SA model, after this one, mulch nicer inside than this model, it’s a surprisingly great drive, goes like a cut cat, it came as a wagon here in Aus too,
I had the sooty oil issue in my mk6 GTI, the transmission changed up into 5th at 40kph so low rpm’s and a heavy foot (my wife drive this car every day) and I had an oil pressure warning. I had it towed to my technician (Italian car specialist, because the so called VW specialist completely missed the problem earlier and didn’t bother testing oil pressure when I had an engine rattle) Even though oil was changed every 10k the sump pickup was clogged with carbon , worst car I ever owned. Sorry thats off topic but Jim really rang some bells talking about carbon blowing past the rings down into the sump.
Awesome video again guys, you the UA-cam OG's on reviewing used/older cars, other are trying to copy but we all know where they get it from.😅😂,Guys can you please review the BMW E36 & E46 M3.
I had a 2008 Focus since new and nothing much went wrong but had a 2014 Focus that has had terrible shuddering on acceleration since new and Ford have tried, unsuccessfully, to fix three times. It’s the last Ford I’ll ever buy.
257,000km no issues. Suspension is absolute prick to change , brake pads are a complete pain in the ass to change. Wheel stud pattern is different to normal ford 5x114.3 pattern. Good power and fun to drive, and good fuel economy when you don’t have your foot planted. Annoying tyre pressure fault can be intermittent.
Thanks guys I am actually looking for a Ford focus ST and it’s good to know what to look for I just want one just a standard no modifications just the way it looked when it came from the showroom I think they look a lot better than just having it modified not interested in stuff like that any more maybe because I’m a little bit older but just like to have a Ford focus ST just to drive around and I do like hot hutches always have and always will so thank you guys
My Mechanic said if I buy a Ford he'll refuse to work on them. It has potential but the fact it needs work just to make it properly enjoyable means its a no go.
I drove a pre-update new. It was a fun car but the transmission felt like the counterweights on the shifter were poorly calibrated. It just felt a little strange. It wouldn't put me off buying one, it was just a strange quirk.
Whoever resprayed that front bumper seriously needs to check their color-matching skills. How is this considered acceptable? It’s frustrating to see the quality of craftsmanship in Australia declining while customers are still being charged premium prices. This definitely needs to be fixed
Question, do you collect watches? I've noticed in this video you're wearing a Casioak & in other videos you're wearing a Seiko Turtle & a Erebus from JOMW
Focus ST and even normal Manual Focus is the pinnacle of the internet ruining a good thing. Everyone bags them online for the DCT issue the autos have. But means even a manual NA Focus or even a new SA model focus is a bargain.
I had a Focus a few years ago and it needed attention to the brakes EVERY service. In the end I had a brake specialist fit alternative (non-Ford) pads and the tendency to warp the discs disappeared….
Could you make a video “10 Most Reliables Cars made after 2015”..? many used car buyers would find it extremely useful which under ten years on the road cars (sedan, wagon, hatch, SUV) are best to buy in Australia
All that and no mention of the seats comfort, now granted it might be a pre 2018 issue, American and only st2 or st3 the cloth seats didn't have the issue (in your video it looks like the st2 seats, they do not seem as aggressive as mine were), but if you weigh over 180lbs those wings on the bottom of the seats are uncomfortable. Also hop into the passenger side the driver side tends to wear in more, i didn't realize how bad it was till I hopped into my passenger seat. Yes modding them are easy but unless your doing rally or track day the wings are just annoying. My favorite line I had commented about the wings before i removed it (the plastic skeleton inside between the cushion and seat frame) is that "the damn seat almost gave me a gynecology exam"
What would I buy instead? Jims thrashed Yaris, that's what. That or a late model Swift Sport with a Quaife LSD. Or a Honda Jazz with a heavily modified driver.
I had a 2015 focus sport for 9 years only issue a couple of dud batteries thanks to Ford. Other than a set of tyres no other issue. Sold ir a month ago.
@@markor6685 No not at all, it’s not a Falcon, the European Fords have always had great handling out of the box, but everything can be improved if you want to spend the money..
@@markor6685 it depends on what you want right? Ford are going to come up with the best compromise for most people to cover all driving scenarios. Fords priority is to sell cars at a price that is affordable and makes them profit. Basically every factory suspension setup can be improved in some form if you are trying to achieve a specific purpose. It’s also a cheap car relatively speaking, you can buy a much more expensive car and get better handling out of the box.
I’d disagree about the seats. I found them too tight bolster wise on both the back rest & the base. I guess it all depends on how big a person you are.

Solid panty dropper though...
intercooler, rear motor mount, intake, gfb dv+ diverster, Rs intake lip. One fun car. RMM is a must that was my best mod
unbelievably one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned.
😅 I've had it for two weeks i love it so much
The storage cubbies next to the rear seat aren't really for storage, they're cleverly designed to catch things that may fall out of your pocket!
Great video as usual! Please do a review on the Nissan Altima / Maxima.👍
You're right, an st wagon would be amazing!
Thanks so much mate!
Don’t you hate when you get porridge on your windscreen. I’m glad you did the demo mate
These seats are seriously amazing. Probably the best I've ever sat in.
Great colour. Great car. Great review.
Son has a 2018 ST, SA model, after this one, mulch nicer inside than this model, it’s a surprisingly great drive, goes like a cut cat, it came as a wagon here in Aus too,
Awesome video, thanks bud!
I spent 2000$ on a tune and bought budget tires…I cut corners on soft, cheap tires and but upgraded turbos and tunes
One of my all time favourite wheel designs!! 😍
Never noticed the reduction in light size, mind blown.
We have the wagon in the UK and I have to say they do look mint❤
Awesome video again guys, you the UA-cam OG's on reviewing used/older cars, other are trying to copy but we all know where they get it from.😅😂,Guys can you please review the BMW E36 & E46 M3.
I had a 2008 Focus since new and nothing much went wrong but had a 2014 Focus that has had terrible shuddering on acceleration since new and Ford have tried, unsuccessfully, to fix three times. It’s the last Ford I’ll ever buy.
Not a bad looking car .. But I personally would have a Mazda 3,Corolla or Civic over a Focus any day ..
Great looking car, colour, and wheels.
I think he is a Seiko fan. I'm always watching what watch he's wearing.
I have 460 000 km on mine, still running.
Focus ST and even normal Manual Focus is the pinnacle of the internet ruining a good thing.
Everyone bags them online for the DCT issue the autos have. But means even a manual NA Focus or even a new SA model focus is a bargain.
dont know why anyone would buy the auto over the manual for an enthusiast car, unless you're driving in heavy traffic 24/7
You can total one going 5mph. They are awesome.
Hahaha the turning circle of a container ship, reminds me of my i20N which is comparable to the Titanic😁
I recently drove a 2020 Fiesta ST. It was a really fun little car to drive! the price was far too high though ( wanted $40,000 for a fiesta! )
Still looking really stylish
Just sold my 2016 tang scream ST. 5 1/2 years I owned it and I had not one prob with it Now in a 2.7 base 2006 cayman !!!!
I had a 2015 focus sport for 9 years only issue a couple of dud batteries thanks to Ford. Other than a set of tyres no other issue. Sold ir a month ago.
13:18 I used to put the Mountune controller in here after I tuned mine.
Brooooo, please do a 2019 Nissan qashqi! I’ve literally been waiting for you guys to make a decision 😬
A redriven video 13 minutes ago?! Pure gold🤑🤑
So where do you get those reports from ?
2:40 pretty cool transition.
One of the great hatches, shame focus ain't coming back
If I had a Rand for everytime you mention "small pretentious coffees" 😂😂
Sorry undercoat grey isn’t a colour but a great car
The XR5 version of the ST was way better than this, with the Volvo drivetrain, T5 and Getrag 6 speed it was just a solid performer that sounded great.
Yeah, my son has one. Could do with a limited slip diff but otherwise is great. Love that 5 pot.
And like all fords needs a suspension upgrade to make it great...
@@markor6685 No not at all, it’s not a Falcon, the European Fords have always had great handling out of the box, but everything can be improved if you want to spend the money..
@@sneakyfoz3692 having owned an xr5 mondeo and focus, suspension upgrade will transform the car to what it should be, to soft and too high standard.
Re: the wiper challenge. Apparently porridge sticks to more than just your ribs..
Mountune roll restrictor sorts out a lot of the torque steer.
I’d disagree about the seats. I found them too tight bolster wise on both the back rest & the base. I guess it all depends on how big a person you are.
Unless you've done one and i vie missed it can you do one on the regular focus
Best disposable car, in the world.
please can you review hyundai getz 5 speed manual ?? looking to buy but not much info on this car around !!
Shot one last week! Review coming soon
There is an STLINE variant in wagon for that might be worth a look
I put micro fibre cloths in that little box in the misses golf
"Power is everything" - Jeremy Clarkson
Hi Redriven or anyone else, is the Italian tune up a gimmick or a real thing as in does it work or no.
So what would be the better family/bit of fun on the weekend car...
Focus ST or Skoda Octavia RS Wagon?
