- Hello everyone!
It's time for another Lawrie Goes Loco! This month we're returning to the Great Bush Railway at Tinkers Park and have a look at 'Sao Domingos' , an Orenstein & Koppel 2 foot gauge locomotive.
If you like what you've seen and want more information on the Great Bush Railway - or you're interested in joining the society, have a look at their website:
www.tinkerspark.com/
A video featuring:
Lawrie - Presenter. Very much in love with O&Ks
Ben - Cameraman. Also very taken with O&Ks
Kindred - Fireman and secondary Cameraman. Also likes the O&K
Note: For the sequence when Lawrie is speaking to the camera, there are no members of the public on board the train - just members of the society.
A video edited by Lawrie.

I am from Pedorido, Portugal. My father and both of my grandparents worked in the mines, which closed in 1991.
There were 5 of those locomotives, and one of tem is still on display on the town hall, although not working.
João Moutinho also lives here and his house is right where the mines used to be.
As Portuguese, I pardon your pronunciation because of your humbleness
I am sorry for butchering it so badly!
was he even in the same postal code?
@@SPUPRR LOL, na. 😁
not being able to whistle...good lord where's the fun in that? that like...most of the point of having a steam engine!
Great video and great series by the way. just stumbled across it and I'm hooked to be honest!
Yeah, it is very dumb, also a little dangerous not having a whistle.
It's most disappointing. We couldn't use the whistle except for emergencies at the Mid Suffolk Light Railway for quite some time.
The bark of the exhaust more than makes up for it though!.
Thank you, really glad you're enjoying what we do!
The way the railway works its not particularly dangerous, you can hear the Loco coming and the crossings are all manned.
@@lmm I do know here in the US you have to do massive modifications to the crossings if you want to go "Quiet Zone" (That's what we call not being allowed to whistle) and even then you can still sound it at the engineer's discretion. that is one thing I like about the US, you can't completely silence the voice of a loco, you know?
At the MSLR the whistles worked, we just didn't use them.
They tell me that they've made the whistle work down at the Great Bush now so it can be used in emergencies.
I just attached. Makeshift whiskey to my air pump and when I pull the air release thing it blowes a loud whisle
16:10 loco be like:
"You sure you want more power? Absolutely sure? ALL RIGHT THEN!"
who doesn't like the sound of a good steam whistle?
Apparently the people who live next door! 😂
NIMBYS, that's who. the pretentious "I matter more therefore you will do what I say" Types (at least that's been my experience).
kind of like the snooty people who decide "hey lets build our neighborhood right next to a race track and then kill off said racetrack because its too loud" here in the u.s.
Yeah, you know the type. We have them over here moving next to music venues then complain about the noise 😂
@@lmm In the US we have even worse ones: the types who move next to an active railroad yard then complain about the noise of idling engines, crashing couplers, and the like.
Like dude, YOU chose to move there! The railroad has been there for over a century its not like its a secret!
Cute little steamer, I love steam locomotives, my all-time favorite is the Union Pacific Big Boy 4-88-4 articulated, designed for use hauling freight over the Rocky Mountains in the mid-west here in the USA. Diesel-electric locos are easier to maintain and run, but there's nothing like the sound of steamer coming at you.
It's a lovely little locomotive.
Have you seen 4014 running yet? I hope to be able to get a look at it on my next trip over to you guys.
Diesel has nothing compared to steam!
Dave Kauffman same here
Bugger the neighbours. Should be allowed to whistle to your hearts content.
I wholeheartedly agree!
Koppels are such clean looking things. Seems like you had a lot of fun with this one! The Germans really were clever about the ergonomics of this thing with that slick toolbox, that firedoor, and some very well laid out controls. That pump is really cool! It's like someone has attached a model engine under the locomotive!
Love your channel for showing us all these interesting features that most people wouldn't really notice or point out in great detail.
Thank you, really happy to hear you're enjoying the Loco stuff.
I really love Ming, it's a super little engine. I really want to get a go on one of the bigger o&ks and see what they're like!
When they put the steam brake back on and the original handbrake it's going to be superb!
@@lmm Ooh yes, I've never actually seen a continental style handbrake before, let alone in actual use, sounds quite interesting! Can't wait to see what other interesting equipment you find.
I did once ride a not-quite O&K at the Talyllyn Railway ('Douglas') - It was a pretty lively ride as you mentioned with Ming, though it was running at a pretty hot pace for something with tiny wheels and it shook a fair amount, which just made it a more fun ride.
I like how it sounds like a bigger loco than it is.
It's great isn't it, such a lovely bark!
This loco felt somewhat familiar to me. It turns out that a heritage railway I used to visit very often as a child (Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden, previously known as Het Smalspoor Museum) also runs some O&K locos! It’s nice to know that there are more engines like the ones from my childhood running on lines across the world
O&k were a hugely successful builder of locos - they can be found all around the world!
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels that’s really cool, thanks for informing me about them!
You're welcome
Just discovered your videos a few days ago. I am hooked. Love all things railroading. In this video you mentioned the center driver is flangeless. In the states we refer to this type of driver as "blind".
I love the little differences in our language! Glad you're enjoying what we do!
Not many Steam locos from the US are capable of visiting the UK because of loading gauges and stuff, but a Maine 2 footer could probably, do it. Seeing this engine made me think of that.
2 foot railways have differing loading gauges - the Welsh Highland Railways engines are out of gauge for the Ffestiniog.
But its more likely than most American stuff
Thank you! Love the engine- gives modelers an appreciation for what seems to be a simple engine but what really goes into driving a real engine.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the video. Those mines are located in the village were I was born and lived for 32 years. My grandfather worked with the locomotives. It means a lot for us.
Boa dia também sou de pedorido e adoro este vídeo.
One of my favorite little locos!
It's a cracking little thing!
love the videos keep them up and loved the little locomotive
Well keep them coming, it's a super Loco. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@lmm it looks a fabulous loco :-)
Beautiful little loco
It's gorgeous isn't it!
She looks just like the classic LGB Model train "Stainz" (the prototype is actually still in service in Austria).
Yes it does. Attractive little engine
There's something so cool hereing a steam engine working really bloody hard
I really enjoyed! Wonderful sounding engine!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
It's brilliant! Glad you enjoyed it!
Worked for Union Pacific RR for 37 years as a Carmen Painter, grandfather was a engineer and dad was a conductor! Loved railroading!
It very enjoyable to watch your shows! Thank you ❤️😊
Oh wow, what a company to work for!
Thank you very much, glad you're enjoying what we do!
Spent a fair amount of time at wormshill as a kid. Used to love it so much there.
Bredgar is super.
I joined you when you were in North Carolina. I do enjoy 😊 history, especially hands on. Unfortunately a wee bit of traveling to get there from Washington State!
North Carolina proved to be a most interesting experience. We will return!
Oh yes, that would be quite a journey for you 😂!
16:02 I was not expecting that one, that must have been terrifying hahaha
Dude that thing moved you weren’t lying lol
oh wow that sound
She sounds magnificent doesn't she!
That makes a great sound. Makes it sound much bigger than it actually is.
It's got a cracking exhaust noise.
Been enjoying your videos after stumbling on your Rushton videos. Would like to see a look at the Y7 video one of my favourites
Glad you are enjoying the content!
Hopefully the Y7 is in the pipeline!
I'm not a big fan of trains but steam engines are just beautiful and satisfying to see in action, I am disappointed that the whistle couldn't be blown, amazing pieces of machinery
It's a really lovely locomotive, glad you're enjoying the steam content!
am I the only one that Sees Bulgy and Trevor in the background ? 1:35
so lovly, I'm working at a steam train museum here in germany and we drive standard gauge engines. Atm we only have one working engine, but it's a lovly one. And ofc we are allowed to whistle, we're actually required to do so per law XD
Oh super, which museum is that?
I don't suppose they would be up for a Lawrie Goes Loco Episode?
That’s a nice little steam locomotive
It's an absolutely cracking little thing.
I like trains locomotive
🤩🤩
Great stuff again Lawrie. Pity about the whistle though.
I really need to get on a footplate again, must be 10 years since I fired a Puffing Billy NA...
Yeah, I really would have liked just to know what it sounded like.
Yes you really must - I get withdrawal symptoms if I'm away for too long 😂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels The whistle came from a Peckett loco, and is quite high pitched.
Oh it's not the original o&k one?
😉 now I drive an NA every day!.
But it's a Mazda not a Baldwin...
😂
Wow your loco is good nice
I wish it was mine, it is a lovely bit of kit though.
I saw some classic/vintage lorry’s in the corners of the yard could you do a video on them lawrie great videos 👍🏻
I really would like to! Hoping to next year!
Glad you're enjoying the videos!
I live in Port Townsend, WA USA, and it seems like all the great steam engines are over there!
You guys have some pretty awesome stuff.
We have a very healthy amount of it 😂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels we have Big Boy it is the largest steam locomotive to operate today!
Best video ever. Could you please make more narrow gauge steam engine reviews
I have some in the pipeline!
That really is a handsome locomotive.
It's gorgeous isn't it!
Lovely little loco Lawrie even though I must admit I prefer standard gauge but that is my personal preference, I would love to have a go in a Class 37 diesel!!!!!
You never know what's in the pipeline...
That's the kind of loco i would happily roll onto a trailer and drive of with it! Ive seen some extremely tiny (i forget the gauge to be honest,it was tiny and under 2 foot im pretty sure) versions of these maybe 30% the size of this one in some pictures many moons ago, the one at the time was plinthed(i think some place in Tasmania, no not "Wee Georgie Wood" which is a smallish once plinthed now running loco over there ) but i believe ended up restored.Maybe one day (when fully tooled up, suitable place to do it and retired!) I will build something around this size, staring a bit smaller first though ;)
I suppose that they would have made a Loco to any specification that was asked of them really, they're not huge locos to start with so I would be intrested to see one of the smaller ones!
There's a couple of 2 foot locos in the UK that people have built, looks like a bit of fun!
Dear little loco!
Great video lawrie. I was wondering , do you know about the great cockcrow railway? It's a 7.25 inch gauge rapresentation if a main line railway. It's situated near chertsy (in Surrey ) and we open to the public every Sunday from 13.00 to 16.30. The railway closes for maintenance work after Halloween and reopens in may. We mostly run live steam locomotive but we also have some diesels ( which are actually electric except the class 55 deltic which is powered by a petrol engine.) I'm a volunteer there so if you came to visit we'll might meet 😀
I volunteer at a museum railway in sweden and I work as a ticket collector or an extra conductor. At our railway we have four Orenstein och koppel (O&K) and I got to drive one of them wich was locomotive nr 10 Avesta 0,6,0..
Oh lovely, how long is the railway?
I do like O&K locomotives, they're very distinctive!
Sorry for the long reply. The railway is about 11.7 km long
Your very lucky to drive a steam locomotive and I haven't even seen one in real life
Honestly, I don't really call them "design flaws" I prefer to call them "features", because they don't really take away from the train, more so add to it! That's one of the reasons I like engines like Ming, because they have their own little quirks and features, and they just make Ming who she is.
remember girls:get a men who loves you the same ,as lawrie love it's loco's!
Good advice
Ever thought about doing an lmm episode on river/narrow boats?
Maybe you could organise something with channels like cursing the cut. They are quite interesting too.
We'd be very up for that actually!
@@lmm and I'd be up for watching it.
Have you ever thought of looking at the 2ft 3inch gauge engines on the Corris Railway?
I would really like to, perhaps I'll drop them an email.
I saw this thumbnail and thought... I swear that’s tinkers Park! I live nearby and it’s such a nice collection there, you should do a video on the two ploughing engines they have there apparently they have a left hand and right hand engine and that’s extremely rare because when they were scrapping the engines they started on the line of right hand engines before they started being saved so there’s a load of left hand and hardly any right hand left and is rare to find a pair
I love them! They're massive things.
I'd really like to do them. I'll have a chat next time I'm there and see what can be arranged!
Ooooh! Traction engine in the background. Could we have a look at that some time?
More steam powered road engines will be coming to the channel!
@@lmm road powered..? ;-)
Yeah... They.. Umm.. Run on tarmac?
@@lmm in the fire to create steam to drive the engine to rotate the wheels? 😁
@@lmm I remember going to the Stradbally steam fair as a kid and seeing many of them.
I've seen it on other O&K locos, the little holes either side on each cylinder. Not the drain cocks, but the hole where the steam comes out sideways on every chuff, wondered what it was for seeing as its wasting steam?
That would be the drains cocks which let steam out.
@@lmm What so there's even ones on the sides of the cylinders as well as the bottom?
You could modify the brake wheel by adding a handle. . Kind of like a speed wrench
That would actually probably make a big difference!
Duncan where did you get the extra wheel
it's so obvious you absolutely love your loco hobby. to be honest, i would too. i love machines, i always have. i've been working on them since i could hold a wrench. i get along better with them than most people. you always know where you stand with a mechanical contraption. people, not so much. for the most part, i still barely understand people. i can tell you what every part of an engine is, and does, but i haven't the foggiest notion why the average human does what they do, other than because. sorry, it's been a week of people driving me bonkers here.
I do really enjoy my hobbies full stop, I just like tinkering and driving things.
I wish I could have starters earlier but didn't have the opportunities, so I'm now making up for lost time 😂
People are hard 😂, we've all got our own way of doing things 😂
This is awesome it is narrow gauge I assume I skipped to the part of you driving it because I really wanted to see it running
It's a lovely little thing. Very good fun to drive!
How much difficulty did they have locating those awful tampered stay bolts? And bugger the neighbors for complaining about the whistle. 😂
Honestly I have no idea.
That's basically what I said to them too!
3:31 the best of the (south) West Country accent.
I think you'll find it's a Suffolk accent 😉
@@dkbmaestrorules I mean the way he said arrived. Makes me think of the farmer of that region
I missed this engine running at the last Tinkers Park Model Railway Plus in Aug 2020
Yeah, so did we!
@@lmm lucky I pointed out Dougdale layout that day ☺️
Ahhhh!
The only thing missing is the whistle. I don't like the neighbors.
It's very annoying. The whistle is now back in use for emergencies.
Perhaps you may like to come and try your hand at our 1879 built Beyer Peacock at the Foxfield Railway in Staffordshire sometime, specially when we have the North Staffordshire Railway 1880s built 4 wheel coaches out. Nigel
There is very little that I can imagine that I would enjoy more.
It is a gorgeous little Loco, and the Notty coaches are just amazing.
Just let us know when and we'd be there!
Hello Nigel, if this could be arranged we would jump on the opportunity! It's an absolutely fabulous engine.
If you would be so kind as to email me at lawrie@lawriesmechanicalmarvels.com that would be amazing and hopefully we could arrange something!
My museum has quite an interesting little narrow gauge locomotive. Ex-Defiance Coal Company N°1, a 1921 HK Porter 0-4-0 built to 40-inch narrow gauge, it originally ran on a line roughly 1½ miles from the DCC's two mines to the coal tipple, located in Mentmore, New Mexico. After the mine shut down, a doctor from upstate New York bought it and displayed it at the legendary Rail City, the first operating steam railway museum in the United States. After the doctor passed away, the engine traded hands again, and I believe it was then owned by Mr. Roy Dunwell, whom the engine is named after now. Mr. Dunwell restored the engine to operational condition, and built a special flatbed truck trailer with rollers, so the engine can be fired up and run. It now is owned by the Railroad Museum of Long Island, of which I am a member, and as of this year, it's back to operation once again. I'm officially part of the Steam Team, and as such, I get to operate the little engine when we fire it up.
Here is a link of the little engine working: ua-cam.com/video/pSRFPI3c0vs/v-deo.html
I do strongly suggest coming by and checking it out, it's a really nice loco.
Oh that's awesome, what a super little thing!
Do you think the museum would be willing to let me do some filming with it?
@@lmm of course! Any exposure we can get helps. The museum's webpage is rmli.org/ and I highly recommend sending a message to our president, Don Fisher. Let me know how it all goes!
@@That_One_Guy_In_A_Band Thank you, I'll drop them a message!
@@lmm Awesome. Let me know how it turns out! Hope to see our little engine on your awesome channel soon!
That would be awesome! I hope it does!
I swear, steam locomotives have such large personalities that you would think they were alive!
Oh they basically are. They talk to you. They've all got personalities and have off days 😂
Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels even the little 009 live steam locomotives 🤣
Need storage for a cold one!!
I think you put them into the water tank lol
Their are dockside diesels locomotives the small to large
WOW! At 18:22 i think i found some abandoned track AND a abandoned tunnel!😀
Those Orenstein&Koppel locomotives are quite common on 2ft/600 mm gauge all around the world. The works produced thousands of them from 10-70 HP size. Unfortunatly this one was quite a lot modified to British style features, that spoil the design a bit. The original lever hand brake is much better and faster to use, the new boiler has a different design with this strange long water gauge glasses and the kind of small aditional dome in the cab. Original fitted with 2 Strube suction injectors and swivel windows in the cab. The 2-step valve regulator seems to have some issue, maybe the stoke of the small relief valve is too big, so the main valve starts "jumping". The safety valves are not orginal, but from a ARN. JUNG built loco. Nevertheless it is a great video, well done Lawrie!
Thanks for all the info, and glad you like it! The original handbrake will be going back on soon, as will a steam brake, which will improve matters dramatically!
@@lmm I was working on an Orenstein&Koppel restauration project in the past, so feel free to contact me in case of questions. Kind regards Sven
@@svenschlenkrich Hi Sven, I look after the locomotive. The regulator has been a headache for years with constant resetting. How far is the relief valve meant to move as currently it has about 3-4 mm? It lets though around 50psi and the main valve is solid as a rock unless you close both completely and open. You'll be pleased to know the lever brake is being refitted and it is being made to look more german again. It was rebuilt by a chap who restores traction engines, hence the unorthodox fittings.
@@FaustusFellows Hi, the relief valve should have only 2 mm stroke according to the drawings. Feel free to send me an e-mail for further details. Kind regards Sven
I'll be really happy if the channel has helped to make something better!
I've got a shunter engine myself. An upsized Hudswell Clarke Diesel Mechanical 0-8-8-0 Shunter, 26 cylinder with 0.7223 liter for each cylinder.
Where is it based? I'd love to have a look at it!
@@lmm it's in Buckley Washington, USA
I'll have to try and get there!
great video! lovely loco!
Thank you very much, and it is!
Lawrie have you been to kirkless railway they have some cracking engines
Yes, though not for a while. Hawk and Owl are very strange things!
On the subject of 2ft gauge
Is there any chance of a “Lawrie goes loco” on the Welsh Highland Railway NGG16 Garratts?
I would love that!
I feel we probably need to be a bit bigger to get into their radar though.
The escalators in the mall local to me are made by O&K
Oh really?
The neighbors don’t like the steam whistle!?😧 Who doesn’t like the sound of a steam whistle?
Apparently them! Rubbish isn't it.
trmn311 whistling became a problem for our Glenwood, South Park and Pacific 15" gage because of a neighbor too.
It's very upsetting isn't it.
This loco looks like something from te statfold barn railway.
Same guage
If I could have a 2 foot gauge steam engine then it would be one of those.
It's brilliant!
@@lmm wait, it used to be at the south tynedale where I'm starting volunteering! Could I have it back please!😂
@@roberthopper1872 there's lots of other toys there
@@lmm I know. As you said in the video, its a bit too small for our needs. The 0-6-0 that we have is undergoing a major overhaul to improve its wieght because the line is a continous gradient from slaggyford to alston
seems fun, wish the volume was louder
Sorry about that, we'll try and improve.
Have you been to the lappa valley railway in Cornwall? With engines from my childhood muffin and zebedee?
I've been there. The steam locomotives were made at a company were based in Stratford Upon Avon who made loads of locomotives and rolling stock for theme parks or pleasure railways.
It would be SO COOL to live on 10 - 20 acres of land AWAY from everybody, and have a loco like this to run on my own track...👍👍
That's the dream! Own private railway

It would be a seriously narrow pit if it was over one! I'm guilty, I listened to you but was busy looking at the AEC buses in the background haha
They had some lovely buses visiting that weekend. Its a good collection down there.
@@lmm Now that I've watched the whole video it looks a great place to visit, just a bit of a trek from the North East though.
Yeah, quite the trek. The steam gala event is pretty good - that's borderline worth the effort if you had something else to do down here!
@@lmm True, if I had a week or two stay down that part of the country and had a few shows arranged to go to it would be well worth the effort of the trek.....maybe some day.
There's enough on around here to occupy your time I'm sure!
Fun
It was!
Big iron somewhere wales
That's a good translation
I feel like if this was my conductor on my train I would honestly feel like I'm in good hands
Well thank you!
If you take the brake off on a gradient do you hear "Lift going down"
Not quite 😂😂
little teakettle locomotive
I was once driving an LKM engine when it had rained, i nearly crashed into an shed becouse i put handbrake on on an gradient and rails was wet
It's scary when an engine starts to slide.
You need to come back and try the new brake lever. Just waiting for the steam test
I'm looking forward to my next turn!
How much torque does it make that’s the question
Why was it working in a mine in a digiorno?
That's what it was purchased to do. Remember these were effectively just plant
Would it be st Dominic?
That rings a bell actually, you coukd be right!
Might have to give this place a visit sometime!
Want to review my Mamod when it's fixed? ;)
It's a nice day out,
And no thanks, I've got a Wilesco 😂

I've got the traction engine, but with the roller front. It's a weird thing.
Then I've a pair of mammod traction engines and a few little stationary things. They're all good fun!
@@TheHatMusic mine has a little generator on it, previous owner attached it, which will run some leds. Which is fun 😂
Yeah, it's a super weird thing.
This Locomotive Saõ Domingos works here when I Live...she never dont place ...Essa LOcomotiva nunca devia ter saido daqui onde moro
in Sweden you would not need to oil the engine as a driver, that is the firemans job!
Sweden has got it sorted! Much more civilised.
I thought all rail vehicles were required to have a working horn/whistle.
Heritage railways have their own regs.
All crossings are manned, and the line is fenced off, so its not a huge issue.
Do you need some kind of license to drive those locos or can you just do it like that on the private railways?
Every railway has its own internal examination. I'm a driver at four different railways, so other railways will take those qualifications on board.
@@lmm okay, thank you
There should be a law about noise... Before you buy your house next to a railway, workshop, pub, school, airport. You should tick a box saying "yes I'm aware there is noise"... Rather than people moving in then complaining.
Yeap totally agree.
In spite of a few areas that I would like restored, it is a beautiful locomotive! She's fit for the Skarloey Railway on Sodor! Also, your fireman is named James! Just like a rather arrogant engine we all know!
My James is a great improvement on the character 😂
It's a really nice little Loco. Love having a drive on it!
1:48 As a expert on portuguese, I can say that you have pronunciated the word "Pejao" wrong. It's actually pronunciated as "Feijão". Nice video by the way!
I'm still unsure how to pronounce it! Glad you enjoyed it though!
In fact locomotives nr 10 Avesta looks rather like Sao domingos your driving here in this video exept Avesta does not have the modified cab and I think Avesta is a bit smaller.
Most O&K Loco look pretty similar, they didn't seem to vary that much from their standard design - it very much is a stereotypical steam engine!
6:10 trespassing people! There a engine that fired up! It could hit you!
They're crew from the railway.
Please don't jump to conclusions.
SAO DOMINGO means HOLY SUNDAY
Oh really?
Not really. Domingo is Sunday, but Sao Domingos is Saint Dominic.
So Sao is a saint in short ,right?
I think so
