- Hello everyone,
Today we head off to Wales for a glorious day at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, looking at their number 1, a locomotive that started off like a traditional Ruston, and is now very different.
If you want more information on the WHHR, have a look at their website here: www.whr.co.uk/
If you would like to get involved and help run the railway, they're always looking for more volunteers here:

I can add a bit of info, it was my dad who rebuilt it into its current form in the early 80's. I remember him saying to me you can tell it was built by an engineer as you can lift the whole body and cab straight off so you've got full access to everything if you need to fix it. He was also really chuffed a couple of years ago when IP engineering decided to make a model of it.
Oh that makes sense! Thanks for the extra bit of history!
That really does look like an American industrial locomotive. I like it. With the roof profile and large windows It sort of looks like one of EMD’s SW-series switchers, shrunk down into a tiny package.
It certainly doesn't look very British!
Slap some Janey couplers on it and it might actually fool some less informed individuals into believing iOS indeed American.
I helped refit the gearbox on this loco back in 1982. I also helped erect the big carriage shed. I did a lot of welding back then and i repaired the water tank at Portmadoc because it had a leak. It was a great time to be a volunteer. I was 18! I often wonder how many of the old gang are still knocking about from those days? Good times.
Oh really? That's awesome - it's still going strong!
Like most heritage stock, it's Trigger's Broom (just with add-ons). Nothing wrong with that at all.
It's like a super charged Triggers broom 😂
You couldn't have made Ep. 30 at a better place! The WHHR is a wonderful little gem, perfect for all ages! Paid my first visit a few weeks ago.
Top video Lawrie! A great locomotive of a wonderful collection of locos there to review!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
This loco holds great memories for me as, like a lot of others, I spent quite a lot of time working on it. It was always my favourite WHHR diesel loco. The Perkins 6.354 running on a straight pipe sounds awesome.
It's a cracking bit if kit!
That has been reworked so well. Maybe if Ruston may have had to go down the different engine route due to emissions etc. Its essentially like the GB Railfreight rework's of old diesel locomotives.
Yeah, it's a rebuild to make something older useful for current times.
Perhaps a ' Ruston Hybrid ' would be a more suitable description. Looks nice anyway.
Yeah, although today hybrid just makes you think 'has electric motor'
Ruston were a Lincoln firm.. Perkins are a Peterborough outfit 50 miles down the road from Lincoln. lots of stuff got Perkins engines. I drove an old Seddon/Perkins 354 for a Lincoln haulage firm in the 70's. God was it loud..!!
Good engines. Like a Perkins lump
Those drone shots are absolutely stunning! I’m desperate to get to the WHHR and the Corris, as thus far I’ve been to neither. I guess that’ll be for my next trip.
They're both worth a visit
Some may not believe, but in 2019 I drove this train when I was 9, am I planning on volunteering at this very railway as I’ve been coming for years
I've always had a soft spot for this unique locomotive. How great did it look on that short goods train - I've suddenly got a hankering for a 009 model - a real bit of narrow gauge individuality.
It's great isn't it!
How great does that little train look with that scenery behind it? Absolutely stunning.
Always happy to see critters from across the pond. Thanks, Lawrie, and cheers from Wisconsin!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have certainly enjoyed once more Lawrie giving history of an interesting locomotive and then driving it along the railway line. These are truly exceptional video's that are great to watch & enjoy.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Look forward to this every month!
Hope we don't disappoint!
Great shots of the WHR and Good old Glaslyn.
Thank you!
What gorgeous scenery!
It's absolutely stunning
Cool engine like it.thanks for the great video. James
You're most welcome!
Fantastic, thank you!
Was a good day! Thanks for having us
I thought, oh, I'll watch a few minutes of this.... You caught my attention, I watched the whole thing and it was great and interesting!
I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed it!
What a brilliant little engine! I was thinking of building one in 16mm scale but abandoned the idea when my friend offered to built a pair of double fairlies (that are still being worked on). I would also love to see the Hunslet Russell (that I noticed in the backound) on the channel, as it is such a beutifull locomotive.
I'd love to feature Russell! She's a beauty
Yeah some whr gear great Laurie please review Russell 👍 great watch and great series
I'm working on it!
Is that the purple moose brewery tanker I see was that the crews beer supply after the run
Very important item of stock!
@@lmm I whole heartedly agree
When i found out about the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, i got it mixed up with the *other* Welsh Higland Railway. Turns out this is a common mistake since both railways end/start at Porthmadog.
The same mistake happens at Harbour station too, with people looking for the WHHR, both ends of the high street are happy to direct all folk to the right places! 👍
I hear that happens!
I love the new intro.
Thank you very much!
Great camera work guys!
Thank you
I saw this loco in person at Welsh Highland Heritage and was fascinated by how large and utilitarian this loco is for 2ft gauge. Great to know more about it, I had assumed it was a strange Ruston prototype
Glad to help tell its story
We'd call that a "critter" over here if it really was one of ours. Critters were common in places where there was a need to move railcars, but a larger switcher would be unsuitable.
Interestingly enough, there are some companies over here that build new critters out of the trucks/traction motor assemblies sourced from old road locomotives like the GP and SD series. Slap a body and an engine on top of the truck, instant locomotive/railcar mover.
I like that terminology
Could this have been Ruston's Future? Lawrie Goes Loco Episode 30 love louis shirley
ive driven this engine myself and i really enjoyed driving it
It's great isn't it
We love laurie goes loco
Thank you, pleased to hear it
It may not be anymore a tiny cutie, but it is still a very nice locomotive. Even with the narrow gauge wagons behind it, it didn't look out of scale (or more correctly out of gauge in 1/1 scale!)
It doesn't look bad by any means
Well it looks a lot better now than it ever did ex-factory.
It's a cool thing
In theory that's like putting a Scania tractor unit body and running gear onto the base of my Fiat Panda, I'm surprised it works so well.
A little more refining, but yes
After seeing this, I have to wonder, will Russell feature in a Lawrie Goes Loco?
I was wondering if it was a hint for future videos
I'm really hoping so!
@@lmm More than welcome to come back and do a Russell video, she's running on the big WHR end of July
@@WHRBERT let's make that happen!
The word that comes to mind when seeing this loco is H E N C H.
It's certainly that
Is it wrong that I love this, even though I live in Lincoln, home of Ruston? Whilst I wish that it had a larger Ruston engine inside, I understand that they're kinda hard to come by. I wonder if Siemens has anything suitable considering they now own a large chunk of the ex Ruston works, (the ones that haven't been demolished at least)
It's a really good Loco - I'm not sure, I assume it's all gone though
Reminds me of home
Oh really?
@@lmm the engine does
Please drive Russell next, if they will allow it
I'm working on it!
@@lmm epic
wow what a wonderful railway and what a strange little Ruston
Both are great!
@@lmm They are
I got to fire Russell the other day on the Welsh highland heritage railway
Cracking little engine
Hello lmm firstly love your videos and a firm subscriber to your channel. I recently started volunteering at my local railway called the sklr light railway in sittingbourne down in Kent. I was wondering if it would be possible to make a video regarding the railway and the line but I understand if this is not possible as this is your channel.
Once again I love your videos and look forward to the next upload
All the best
Heya, really like the Sittingbourne and Kemsley, glad to hear you've started volunteering!
I'd love to be able film with the railway!
It probably would be about the same in size as an American GE 25 Tonner.
Hello Lawrie, this really looks like proper working engine. I just wonder why they downgraded engine si much? Why is there still so small gearbox?
The engine was downgraded so it didn't destroy the gearbox. The gearbox works, so they didn't want to replace it!
🙏
👍
Lawrie for out of proportion you need to see the gauged down to 1m standard gauge diesels in the german harz
They're mad aren't they!
@@lmm yeah. I'd say its sad so few still run, but more running would mean less steam
I grew up with Dubsy down the road. There is wrong and there is f* that thing. That isn't t one of the bad things.
It's strange, but it works
That beware of trains sign may be counterproductive.
There were indeed trains
A PERKTON?
So lawrie how’s the coal issue going I have heard that it’s getting difficult to get now
Big standard gauge railways aren't doing great due to the coal issues but it has made running a bit more interesting as the Severn Valley Railway puts on two steam locomotives and two heritage diesel locomotives and a few other railways have done similar, so there is a fare bit of variety to watch running on the line. The narrow gauge railways are ok with the coal shortage as they are starting to use the lower emission E coal which is ideally suited for their locomotives.
It's mostly blown out of proportion.
Coal is readily available. Price has gone up, but there isn't a shortage.
If you're interested in what the heritage railways are doing, have a look at the Talyllyn Railway UA-cam channel as they talk about the various options and prices for coal and alternatives.
@@tinplategeektoo I have been watching that its really interesting to watch. I just hope that they find a reliable replacement for the larger locomotives as some of the bio coal doesn't like it when it rains.
"Fully upholstered"
>tilts down to see massive chunk of upholstery ripped out.
Mostly. Mostly upholstered.
I’m new to your channel, so these questions might seem stupid, but how do you get a “driver’s license” for driving a train? Also, I’m a bit confused by these small trains. I know for heritage lines it’s hard to find rolling stock, but, how many cars could these engines pull? These small trains seem to fail the economies of scale. I know that engines have come a long way, but these just seem weird to me and perhaps a bit pointless. I know these trains aren’t pointless, or companies would make them, but asan American, I just don’t understand these trains. Love your videos and the channel. Just trying to learn about other country’s industries and histories. Also, who owned the railways. I’m listening to a book about the US transcontinental railway and it seems that whoever placed the rails, owned the rails, but was wondering if that was, and is, the case in the UK. Any books and/or advice would be gratefully appreciated (other than reading Wikipedia articles).
Heya,
Each heritage railway in the UK is its own organisation with its own rules and regs.
To be able to drive one would have to pass their examination.
One gets 'passed out' as a driver by volunteering and spending time learning how these things work.
I have been volunteering at some places for 15 years.
In this form, she'll shift in excess of 100 tonnes.
The train we haul in the video is just a short demonstration, although many railways did operate such things.
You need to realise that the application of railways in the UK and US are different - we never travelled the distances you did, and trains like this represent the small companies serving just a few places.
😎😎😎😎👍
👍
"A Tale of Two Rustons"..."It is a far, far better Ruston than I have ever driven before...Taking me to a far, far better ride, than I have ever ridden, on two foot gauge...
That's a much better title!
@@lmm my pleasure, and the good news is I never charge royalties! 😉 that said,, I really do love your Ruston I even bought the Hornby one most like it to have on my railroad.
I did almost suggest "Ruston on roller skates".
It's a frankinruston!
That's a good name
Looks like a Plymouth
It does!
How old are you
In my thirties!
It has a Ruston look from the side tbh
The chassis is very Ruston. The rest, not so much
Yes dosent look very Ruston does it
Every loco was built to do a job, this ones no different.
This was rebuilt to do a job 😂
it identifies as a Ruston .. therefore in this day & age you have to call it a Ruston ( or someone will make a complaint ) .. lol
It's certainly got Ruston bits.
Isn't it a bit pointless have a engine more powerful than the gearbox can cope with?
That'd why it's been down rated. Which means it should last for ever being significantly less stressed
