I have a 2010 Golf 2.5 5 cylinder.. just hit 168,000 miles yesterday...I LOVE this car.
I drive my Golf daily and plan on keeping it for a long time.

I had a 09 Jetta 2.5l Auto. I bought it with 110k from an auction because the bumper and rad support was cracked. $2000 all in and i put almost 80k more on it before my ex totaled it. That 2.5l was smooth, and never let me down. Decent fuel economy, and way quicker than any 8 valves i have owned. I think its high time for me to find a clean 2.5l Sportwagen!
This is hilarious, I’m actually buying an 05 2.5 with bumper damage for exactly 2,000 with 110,000 miles, not even kidding on the way there soon

For me the 2.5L is the most bullet proof motor for vw
Second only to the legendary 8v 2.0
This is one of the most bullet proof engines I've encountered - 240,000 km and still running very smoothly and burning very little oil.

True. i had a 2006 Rabbit. 2.5 is a very good motor. Here in Europe 1.9 TDI is the best. I got a 1.6 MPI....pretty reliable
love the 2.5 but I have to disagree with the not fun statement the 2.5 is a beautiful sounding engine when between 3-4500 rpm
TheGrissomCat yes. I completely agree. Even though it's not crazy powerful and insane like the old Group B Audi Quattro's, you can still catch that distinctive I5 sound. I love it.
But remember the quattro audi have turbo and yes they are fast, but the aspirated 2.2 was slowwww
I did a muffler delete on my 08 rabbit, sounds absolutely incredible. loud civics sound like lawnmowers, but this 2.5 sounds amazing

I have owned Audis and Volkswagens since 02. When Audi/VW starting having issues with the 2.0T in (2009? Ish) I moved away from their turbo engines to the 2.5L 5 cylinder vehicles. I have owned 6 VWs (5 Jettas, 1 Golf) with the 2.5's since 2010 through current, my middle daughter is driving 13 Golf 2.5 currently. My oldest daughter was driving a 2011 VW Jetta 2.5se I bought her for her first car (bought it as 1 owner, clean title, clean carfax ect 40k mile car). I just did regular maintenance on her car , the only 2 things that ever broke were the wiper motor at 168,000 miles (which I replaced with the newer version "the redesigned bosh unit" at a cost of $75) and the N95 valve failed "stuck open" at 190,000 miles (I bought a new valve, fixed that myself for $25). She drove that car all through high school and 4 years of college. At 200,000 it still drove like a 40,000 mile car. She took it on road trips, vacations ect exceeding up to 2,000 miles per trip "even as the car was approaching 200,000 miles" all without a single concern weather the car would make it or not. When she graduated I bought her a brand new Jetta SEL Premium as a graduation gift and sold her 2011 2.5 Jetta now with over 210,000 miles on it for $4,500. Crazy part is I bought the car at 40,000 miles 7 years earlier off of a friend for $4,500. The guy who bought it 2 years go is still driving it and is over 260,000 miles the last time I had seen him. Out of the SIX 2.5L VWs we have had I have only ever had very minor issues (on 3 the same original design Bosch wiper motor failed). I had that N95 valve fail at 190,000 on the one car. Other than that it has just been a few (3 maybe) window switches (they quit the auto function because the plastic tabs on the plastic switch cover broke) and one of the cars coolant reservoirs developed a hairline fracture and was ever so slowly leaking coolant (possibly from me accidentally leaning on it while changing plugs, lol). I have absolutely been nothing but pleased with VW's 2.5L 5 cylinder cars, they have been very good to my family. I have even had a few friends and family buy Volkswagens with the 2.5L 5cyl engines at my recommendation, two still have them, one is over 200k miles currently and the other over 150k miles, same story. Regular maintenance and very few failures (of just minor little things).
Mr Paul & dear Humble mechanic, Last year I did replace the valve cover (gasket only ), no more leaks and works perfectly fine, just make sure when you replace the gasket buy new bolts with it.I purchased it from VW dealer. At that time I had no idea about DEUTCH auto parts. ever since i watched humble mechanic , I purchase all my parts from DAP since i live in Concord NC , So far I purchased , vacuums pump , and 2 door latches installed it by watching humble mechanic , its simply a blessing. Extremely nice people at DAP . Thank you both of you for making me a partial mechanic and saving me $$$$$.
how did you changed the door latches?
2012 2.5, no problems at all, now at 74000 miles. But 2012 was the year when they improved everything. Liqui Moly oil every 10000 and thats it.
Just wait until you hit 120k..
Most of the issues can just be deleted and can never be thought about again. I love my 2.5 and love it even more as a 2.5t.

@@IAMWAXX Only Audi make Turbo 5 cylindars. Volvo also used to make the 5cylindars, but then switched out to smaller engines with hybrids after 2015

2012 Passat 2.5 with 126,000 hard freeway miles (hard acceleration, frequent redline, frequent switching to sport mode to hold gear, consistent high speeds).. Runs like a dream. I did have to replace the throttle body and gas pedal sensors about 10,000 miles ago.. otherwise just the scheduled maintenance and oil changes.
Mine was also very good. it was silver though and for some reason invisible to others, and when it was hit for the third time by a dumb driver the insurance company decided they wanted the copart money more than to repair or properly replace my vehicle. still other than a failed crank sensor under warranty, that think was dead reliable.
I own a 2012, 2.5 Jetta with 5 speed manual trans. It was a 30k mile cpo vehicle. It isn’t super fast, but it’s been reliable in every sense of the word.
Even though the 2.5's are slow, it's easily one of VW's most reliable motors. My DD is a 2.5, and after the vacuum pump fix, it has been put through hell and back and still makes upwards of 40mpg
Tyler I've had the opposite results of your 2.5. Mine feels like it has a lot of torque, but gets horrible gas mileage. I'm lucky to get 20mpg with mine.
I know they're a little over torquey, mine spins tires a ton if i floor it. But I keep it under 3k most of the time, especially daily driving about 15 miles to work. Usually only have to fill up every week or so..
Tyler they can make a lot of power and can do it reliably...but are very expensive to tune..... my home town tuner Iroz motorsports does wonders on vw i5 engines. they were featured on European car magazine 2 years ago.
my 2.5 got 28mpg faithfully, and it could spin the tires if i tried hard enough. I thought it was a great engine, i loved the sound too.
Yes my 2012 2.5 passat gets abused and always reved up. I'll wear out the the trans before the motor. I use the auto/manual HARD!!!
I just bought a 2010 Jetta from a “friend” 🙄😒 and I’m slowly figuring out all of the problems it had when he had it, your videos have helped so much!! 😃
REALLY GOOD LUCK WITH IT!!!! I have a VW-JEtta 2010, original owner currently my JETTA has 114,000K. The major repairs were rebuild the transmission at 80,000K, then driver door lock or fluctuator, radio is not working anymore causing battery drainage. AC system damaged and repaired. Changed the battery 3 times already, these VW have problem with the electrical or software issues. WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY VW VEHICLES!!!!
Angel Delgado LoL! A month later and I’ve decided I no longer want a Jetta ever again, I think I just got the car at the wrong time but $2,200 later and barely anything left for my kids’ Christmas... yeah I’m done with it

If all I have to worry about is the air pump or vacuum then the 2.5 is a great choice for me ty for the info here both guys are great for VW guys PERIOD much thanks for all info guys

I have an '08 Jetta with the 2.5 and I love it. Had it since 2010 and she's at 180K miles (the majority are highway miles). Still runs like a champ! The only biggest issue I've had (and I'm sure this has happened to a handful) is that my brake booster vacuum pump was leaking oil. It was a pricey fix from the dealer because they had to take the engine and tranny out to get to it, but I found a video on how to do it without taking those out. It's in a tricky angle to get to but not impossible. I've replaced it with a Pierburg pump instead of the factory OEM pump/a rebuilt one because I knew that later on, it would do the same thing. Since the time I've had it, it now has an AWE Track exhaust mated to USP's downpipe with a high flow cat and 18 inch Konig Oversteer wheels. This made the car's acceleration a little faster and handling is better around corners. I know you guys say it's not the most exciting thing out there (as it is built more for a commuter), but this 5-cylinder sounds amazing! It's like a mix between the VR6 in low RPMs and an Audi R8 V10 in high RPMs. It sounds very similar to the Audi RS3/TTRS (also a 2.5), but without the spooly turbo sounds. I love this thing!

My 2007 Jetta 2.5 just rolled over 200,000 miles. I drive it hard daily. Purchased CPO @41,000 in 2010.
Original alternator, radiator, WHEEL BEARINGS (I take corners pretty hard sometimes) and it sees a lot of high speed driving on the freeway when traffic is light or non existent. (Even north of 130MPH, got an APR tune on it). Had the coolant flange done, next is the vacuum pump but I think I'll do it myself and use your method I saw.
Water pump, AC all original. Front brakes were factory and finally changed at 175K and at that time I changed my 4th set of rears.. LOL. That's gotta be a record, right?
Only mechanical issue is the timing chain rattle, and the transmission is starting to do the shifting flares but only when it's hot and in stop and go traffic.. when it's cold, it shift like the day I bought it. But I know it's the valve body issue I've read a lot about.

Hey Brian! I just performed the vacuum pump delete with the spulen kit. Works amazing and no more leaks! This was my first time working on my 09 Jetta 2.5 and it was pretty easy to be honest. Just wanted to give you some extra motivation. Happy DIYing!

Shoot if you got yours up to 200k with what I assume was regular maintenance, I have some good hopes for mine at 132444 with I’m certain was irregular maintenance (not my doing) (2007 Wolfsburg Edition)
I have the same issues you have, and from what I know, everything except a compressor that was installed last summer is original. The one I have is in a little worse shape than yours; both axles are out of alignment and as a result their respective ball joints are probably spent too.
Cameron Cruz go to Rockauto and shop all the parts you need. Super cheap. Imma rebuild my Jetta she's at 182k and imma do brand new wheel bearings, struts, control arms, ball joints, trailing arms, rear control arms, sway bar bushings and all other related bushings are going to be poly PowerFlex. I already have the BFI engine mount and trans mount. Makes the engine much more responsive. Imma do the dog bone mounts next. I'm rebuilding my car through rock auto for roughly around 1,200 not bad considering all that I'm changing. With the bushings that's an additional 350 and with after market parts another 500 I'll have a new car.
I have a 2013 2.5l jetta sportline. I had an exhaust "clamp" that severed because of rust. Other than that, the car ejected (litterally) powersteering fluid because I live in a cold area. Warming the car before going out would be a good idea. The engine is bulletproof tho, never had any problems with it. The worst part about the car is the rust. I'm currently in the middle of repainting all of the 4 sides of the car and the bottom is also pretty rusted. Thanks and have a great day !
I have a 2012 2.5 beetle 5spd with 293k miles. My beetle got its 1st tune up at 200k miles(NGK) I only started having issues at 250k. The my gear box lost 1st gear. I got a new clutch at 283k miles. I had to replace the ignition and CV joint at about 286k. At 293k miles I just replace the oxygen and map sensor. She has been a blessing. I use 93oct and change the oil (full synthetic) every 10k mile. .ps. my 2.5 five is not slow. You have to change gears at 3 to 3.5 rpm. The gear ratio is bigger than most cars
2012 VW Jetta, 203k, alternater went 2k ago. Drifting caused EPC/spark plug failure simultaneously (never serviced prior) Replaced Throttle body/plugs/Coil packs. Runs great with 5-7k oil change intervals. Fuel filter easy to change. A great daily. Only issue I had was with rear breaks. Brake cylinder failed early on. And a tip. there’s a teardrop looking piece in the brake drum assembly that you’re supposed to pull down on. To depress the brake shoes. To fit the brake drum over the assembly. Was not aware of that info.
what about the 07 2.5 what are the common issues is there timing chain issues in the earlier ones.
I noticed that they mentioned a/c compressors. I found that the sensor on the side of the compressor just needed replaced. I got it for $25.00 online. VW won't replace the sensor so I was told because it is an After market part. The compressor replacement would have been $1,000.00+. I talked with my mechanic and told him of the issue. He had not heard of the sensor going bad, but having to replace the compressor. The replacement does require the system to be evacuated of Freon, so that is why I took it to the shop. After, they installed said sensor $170.00!! What savings!! Been running 3 seasons now.
My 2007 Jetta Wolfsburg has 150+K and is still my DD. The 2.5 is a beast at mid to upper RPMs. Problem is people have to move it past the stage where it sounds like crap. This car still surprises me at times with its highway acceleration. It's no track car, but I'm also not a track driver!
Sadly I nailed a couch on the highway several years ago (1 am on a bridge - totally FUBAR) so much of my front end had to be replaced by a small-town Chrysler dealer. Still fixing their short-cuts and mistakes. Aside from those potential concerns, the only problem I for sure know about was a vacuum pump rebuild (quick and cheap rebuild - I'll update if this fails). While I had the cover off for that though I noticed I might be looking at a valve cover seal issue. Also, I am replacing my pulleys and lower tensioner as part of a DIY belts replacement. They sound okay, but I'll be in there anyway for a worn belt so why the heck not? I don't count the belts, pulleys, tensioner, or even the valve cover as 2.5 problems - just part of owning an older car.
I own a 2010 2.5l Jetta with 101k miles . Engine has been bulletproof thus far. Did have to replace AC compressor at 25k and my radio shorted out at 78k. Both replaced with a warranty I had purchased. Fingers crossed for further years, but I’ve been super happy!

@@leonelleon4130 hey there! Car has still been running great engine wise. I did however have my ABS pump/ module go bad. I was getting ABS/traction control alarm and blinking lights on my dash. This was NOT a cheap fix! Wasn’t necessarily needed, as I could live without ABS, but the blinking dash lights drove me nuts, and the rest of the car is in such good shape that it made sense to fix. The pump and module cannot be changed independently , thus both had to be replaced and overall costed near 3k with labor. Not cheap!
Only other issue I’m running into now is sagging headliner. Being in Florida, surely the heat has contributed to this. Even my rear door panel is starting to peel off the door. I will get around to fixing this once it gets bad enough to really notice.
Otherwise car drives great!
06 2.5 with 204k still going strong..changed n80 valve 8 yrs ago front brakes @192k valve cover gasket @175k factory recall coils @ about 80k still have them in changed alternator @ 125k have a big system in the car did not change a/c compressor but changed the valve inside the compressor instead $28 fix thats about it.thus is my 5th jetta and hands down thee best damn engine vw ever produced period.i use a quart of marvel mystery oil on every oil change from day one and when i changed my valve cover gasket the insides had absolutely no oil buildup anywhere looked like a brand new motor.
My 2009 has 299,153 miles today, another 2 weeks and it’ll roll 300,000 miles. It says something about the motor.
'11 2.5 SE I bought brand new still rolling 215k miles engine has been rock solid my only problems were weird electrical problems like the radio died and the light switch would turn the lights on in cold weather when in off position and the AC compressor died but mechanically it's been a champ
Same problems here. Had a weird issue that turned out to be a sensor for the tranny easy fix.
Hey Charles or whoever's reading this, I'm from Germany and since 3 months I'm owner of a 07 Rabbit 2.5 with 63k miles . I absolutely love this Car, its very smooth to drive. I use it as a daily driver and have an average of 32-35mpg, which i think is ok. The only thing that's disturbing is a whistling noise from the eninge while accelerating. Might be from the air intake? Is this a common thing or something to worry about? Any other 2.5 driver here with the same issue? Greeting from Germany

Yep! I have that steering column issue too. Took so long to fix that I ended up leasing Jeep in the interim. Gave the Jeep to my Mom and bought a MK7.5. My ol’ 2.5 L MKV is fixed but I have no use for it now. Any ideas for a build?

Nice. Feel some sort of relief just recently got my 2011 2.5 Jetta SE at 58k now it’s at 62k and I like it. Just want it to last forever.
I bought a 2008 Jetta 2.5 with 220k miles, just changed all fluids and basic maintenance and the car was still doing fine after a year. Was surprised that the car never burnt any oil even with such high mileage. In my opinion, the 2.5 is one of the best engine by VW compared to other VW/Audi engines.
Would adding a catch can help with the failure rates of the combi valve in the 2.5l na engine?

Valve cover, map sensor, throttle body, AC solenoid & fix vacuum pump leak. I have one with 140K & have done everything DIY with aftermarket parts off amazon. This 2.5 is the best motor VW has made in a while. Most motors last if you keep them serviced.
I just bought one from a buddy with 298k (for very cheep lol). I plan on running it until it cant run anymore. We will see😂. Just drove it home tonight. What a gem it is

Great videos - I really appreciate them. I've been watching them for about a year now and found your vacuum pump diagnostic and replacement videos extremely helpful.
I'm experiencing quite a headache of a problem and am wondering if you have ever seen anything similar. The vehicle is a 2005 Jetta 2.5L with 128,000 miles. The problem is a potent exhaust/oil burning smell observed inside the cabin. I first noticed this problem a few months back (after replacing the vacuum pump, valve cover gasket, and spark plugs). At first the odor was only observed while standing outside the car and smelled more like exhaust, but as time progressed - the odor now seems to be more like of a burning oil/petroleum smell, that has progressively been getting worse.
I took it to the dealer and they noticed that a clamp on the exhaust was damaged; they replaced it and said it was all good. Soon after, the exhaust smell is gone, but I'm getting slammed with this burning oil/petroleum odor. I take it back to dealer, they say there's a small leak in the oil pan gasket; they sealed the leak. A couple days later, it still smells. I take it back and they look at and say they only thing they saw is "a very slight leak between the engine and transmission [sounds like rear main seal?] that should not affect the performance/cause any odors; very expensive repair for very minor leak" and they didn't recommend fixing it. As of the last 3 weeks, the odor is now intermittently present while driving (windows up/down and A.C. on/off). At first I was suspecting that it might be caked oil vaporizing on the heat of the engine (and heat from the summer sun), but they supposedly cleaned off the caked oil thoroughly at the the dealer. I am at my wit's end, and other than this problem the car is in great shape and it would be a shame to have to get rid of the car. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I know it's been a long time, but this sounds like an exhaust leak near the headers. A lot of cars, not just VWs, have leaky headers and downpipe cats that start to crack around the 100K mile range, especially on cars that sit outside in areas where rust is common. Most headers can be bought through 1A auto for around 200 bucks or less and there is usually a video to do it in an afternoon easily. Hopefully this helps someone.
Nice video Charles...I got a question regarding transmission fluid change. I recently did my 1st too services in the dealer, they just flushed with a machine. Do I need to replace filter and gasket next time at wok or just do the same ( just asking because my previous cars - not VW's I drop the pan & change filter)

I dropped the pan and replaced the gasket and filter, I would reccomend doing that.
I actually bought my car with the pcv valve issue and about a 15 min fix. when your car revs high(3500 RPM) then drops to (800 RPM) while idling this is the sign of a pcv valve malfunction

I have had every single issue you guys had mentioned with my 2013 passat 2.5 before 36k but I have replaced the throttle body twice and the valve cover and map sensor and ac compressor and the O2 sensors and fuel pump and and the cam and crank position sensors but the car now has 184k still running strong
I love my 2.5 Jetta Sportwagen. It’s truly a fun car to drive. I do have one question it’s a MK6 and I wanted to know if the memory seats from a 09mk5 would work or is there any rewiring needed to make it work.
my 2010 mk5 2.5L is in the shop today. EPC came on with 111,790 miles and it just died. Hope it's a sensory issue.
Update : @HumbleMechanic So... That EPC and check engine light came on the dash was for a sensor for camshaft and crankshaft. Thought it was throttle body but much worse. All I have to say is, get that extended warranty. 👍

@@88ights well itll be 5 years owning this car in august. honestly its been extremely reliable. If you want a more fun car dont buy the automatic. also the 09g trans has valve body issues and very expensive to replace. so keep up with the transmission maintenance. the vaccuum pump is another common oil leak point. i think mine was leaking for a little bit but it seems to have worked its self out some how haha. i have had a point where the engine was misfiring quite bad i couldnt drive it to work without fear of being stranded. but i replaced fuel rail fuel injectors fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition coil packs. did away with the misfiring for about 2 months. now its having a very intermittent misfire every once in awhile not sure why that is. considering theyve fixed the timing chain issues from previous years im starting to think that it might just be time to do the vvt solenoid considering it only happens in the upper rpms when im punching it. ive only been stranded with a dead battery one time and that was because i tried to be clever and install my own amp and subwoofer and ended up just draining my battery while the car was off so thats my own fault. the cabin blower motor resitor pack has just gone out for the second time and i replaced it 2 years ago. not sure why but instead of blowing the fuse for the controls it just melted the fuse so hopfully the fuse box is okay. i replaced the fuse and just ordered the new resistor pack. super easy to install it right under the glove box. other than that though it has started every single time ive turned that key and ive had it since 52k miles and now has 134k miles. Headliner is starting to fall off due to how often i run with windows down. but yea other than that its been a great car, feels like it has very good build quality everyting is super strong feeling inside. ive ran this thing at 120mph for over 15 minutes no problem feels smooth as a babys bottom the whole way. I would recommend get the manual and find one with rear disk breaks and independent rear suspention those are my only take backs that i have about this car. otherwise incredibly reliable compared to how volkswagens are typally perceived in the world.
@@erikfleming1405 well as long as you keep up maintence and make sure you do transmission too especially if its automatic and you should not have many issues at all. you can read my other commend replying to 88ights. but yes very reliable if it werent for the stupid auto trans i would never get rid of this car. still might not get rid of it tbh but i need money to fix her up cuz trans is having intermittent issues with the valve body i believe and dealer wants 3700 to fix it.
Lol I have a 2011 2.5L. Just replaced the value cover gasket, map sensor, spark plugs.. wasn’t too bad with the help of UA-cam! Prob need A/C compressor or just a flush and refill. 10/10 😂

I preventatively replaced the N80 purge valve. Currently, the oil filter housing gasket is leaking. It will cost me around 1k to fix at the shop I go to. Bolts are seized/rusted on the intake, preventing me from doing the job myself.

If you're going to replace the PCV valve, DEFINITELY replace the VALVE COVER because the center gasket will eventually leak oil onto the coils and plugs. I did this to my Mk 5 Rabbit with the 2.5L engine.

I've got a '10 Jetta 2.5L that is throwing an intermittent knock sensor code (P0328 - Knock Sensor 1 Input Too High). There is a rattling type sound coming from the serpentine belt area. The dealer I took it to said it was the alternator pulley, but that didn't fix the noise or the CEL, they then jumped to wanting to take the engine apart!! Is it at all possible that it's an idler or tensioner gone bad?
An independent VW/Audi shop took the tension off the alternator belt real quick and the sound disappeared, but I don't know if that would be causing the knock.
Any thoughts? Could the sensor be bad as well?
You guys missed a big issue about the failing valve bodies in the models with the 09g automatic transmissions.

FrostyCoug there are structual problems with the valve body so even with regular trasmission fluid change it still might give you issues.

Mr. Humble, I am wondering if you can answer a question. I have purchased a used 2013 Golf 2.5. It is only getting.....on average........19-20 mpg, driving in about 15' Fahrenheit, and about 80% of my commute is at 50 mph. I do not have a heavy foot and drive quite gingerly all the time. Any thought other than the usual plugs and air filter?

i really need your expert advice. I own a 2010 mk6 golf with a 2.5l engine. Recently iv been noticing a inconsistent tapping or knock noise. It comes more from the right side of the engine. (when looking into the engine bay "right"). some days i won't hear it some days it will continue to tap away. the car has 170k kms not miles. anybodies help will be appreciated...... im freaking out a little bit.

I couldn't find enough info on 1.8t. To Me it never made sense for VW to
drop the 2.5l because of the reliability. If anything turbocharge it, and get
the best of both worlds performance, and reliability. Would make a real nice GLI.

Not only better gas mileage, but lighter weight, improved 0-60 (~1 sec), a broader, lower powerband that shows up more obviously in test drives, and lower emissions. The smart money will still look for the 2.5.
Got myself a 2013 Golf 2.5L at 70k miles back in April. Just hit 75k in January 2021. Only thing wrong when I got it was that the A/C doesn't work... I'm assuming due to the compressor.
I love my 2012 Passat with the 2.5. it's got 162k on it. Doesn't leak anything at all just done regular maintenance and just now had to replace the map sensor. Still gets 30-35 mpg on the highway too. Also I think it sounds pretty but I'm probably biased haha.

what was the reason for the map sensor CEL? Typically, the reason the CEL is thrown is because of oily residue and that's typically the manifold intake leaking.
When we pulled it out it was pretty clean. After replacing it the check engine light came back on, and periodically goes on and off. We are going to repin the connector since a few pins look to be spread a bit wide and see if that helps.

Nice video, I have 08 Jetta 2.5 with excessive oil consumption one quart every 800 miles. I own a 2009 Camry that had the same issue. Toyota like Volkwagen said that was normal oil consumption, eventually Toyota sent me a letter, tested for oil consumption and found to be out of spec. Toyota replaced three pistons and Rings, took care of the issue, what are the chances VW will do the same
Art Suarez that is not normal oil consumption, my 2005.5 Jetta 2.5 maybe loses a half a quart every 10,000 miles between oil changes. I’ve been a quart low once when I used a cheaper synthetic, but that’s about it.

Hi so I have 2006 jetta 2.5l and i was very concerned about this burning smell issue and I couldn’t figure it out where its coming from but when Im driving I can smell it inside the car from it came out from my vents and also when I pop thr hood it’s hard for me to figure out where it’s coming from and I can smell it from the fan and in the engine but wasn’t sure where is the problem. Oil filter housings. Use a very very very large pair of pliers to get it off.
That’s usually due to someone over tightening it

Bought a 2010 Golf 2.5 AT for wife new. Now has 130K. It has been pretty reliable except the following: vaccum pump oil leak @ 90K(replaced); small leak in the valve cover gasket @ 130K(just changed the valve cover today & it runs smooth & strong along with NGK copper plugs #5960. TPS (tire pressure sensor) came on 3 months ago and not going away; I'm guessing the batteries in the sensors are gone, Mr. Humble, what do you think is the problem? Headliner worn & fell down this year (replaced).

PLEASE HELP!, I have a 2016, VW, Jetta, L4, 2.5 ltr, 5 cylinders, here in Mexico in 2016 we still got that engine. The thing is that since brand new every now and then early in the morning while cold starting the car starts jerking the RP comes down and it almost turns off, the rest of the day it behaves normal and no codes or check engine light are trigger. I have taken it 3 times to the dealer but they keep telling me they can´t find anything wrong with it. Lately every single morning it gives me the cold starting problem and since my warranty is 8 days away from expiring I took it once again to the dealer but this time they told me it´s normal for this cars to have that problem that there is nothing they can do to help.
I can´t belive this early morning jerking could be normal and I´m really worried because it looks like it´s getting worse with time. Have any of you guys had experience this?, is it really normal? or my dealer is trying to bullshit me?. Please if there is something I could tell them when I get back to them that would show them a solution like a recall or any kind of thing that would help me solve this issue before my warranty expires I would be very grateful. Has anyone faced the issue where you get a crank but no start when fuel is around a quarter tank? Seeing this on a 2008 Jetta 2.5L 245,000 miles (not to one up Leonard just stating the facts for reference). Only can be resolved by going into WOT (wide open throttle) mode. Thoughts would be appreciated.
@1:29 I heard, "So unfortunately you have to buy the whole valve cover in that circumstance..." Right. That's kind of like everything else on a VW where the really inexpensive gasket or part breaks and you have to either spend an order of magnitude greater than the failed part in excessive parts or labor to fix the cheap defect. I'm currently at the phase of my MKV 2.5's life where the A/C has failed and so "Unfortunately you have to buy the whole car in that circumstance."

Thus far I had a shop evacuate the system, I've replaced the compressor, receiver/drier, expansion valve, high pressure switch, o-ring gaskets, checked relays, fuses, and fans. Vacuumed the system for 2 hours - held vacuum with no leaks, now it won't take any R134a through the AC manifold on the low port. What's more frustrating than doing all this work and having no success is trying to join various "enthusiast" forums or FB groups for advice, but not being able to post or being restricted from joining by unresponsive moderators. I appreciate the comment/feedback.

What about plastic cardridge oil filter? I've heard when these start leaking, you need to remove entire front of the car to replace it, and this sounds kinda scary :)
It’s not that hard to remove the whole front end… I’ve done it a couple times on a 08 Jetta 2.5. Just a couple clips and bolts

I have had a 5 speed 01 turbo an 03 and then a 04 for parts and now have a 08 2.5 it has A little over 200000 miles and runs beautifully I am replacing the ac compressor tho replaced the fan do to the smaller one not working it’s gonna need a radiator small leak towards the right bottom the motor behind the glove box for the air circulation vent hums a bit loud and the radio had a cdc hardware error very annoying while trying to listen to my jams and couldn’t play cd or the aux just radio took it out put in another one and now need a code I can’t seem to get vw dealership wants 100 and some odd bucks to give me one witch I was up set about but other then these minor issues with my 08 every Jetta I have had has been easy affordable parts fairly easy fixes and with the miles I’m very impressed I love Jetta’s

I have an 08 and from early on it has done that going into 2nd. I got a letter stating it was a bushing. Then somehow that recall vanished from the recall list.
Mine has 203K miles and it runs like new still no issues at all the only issue I had was the booster air pump that leak replaced it and no more leaks also I have a small valve cover leak but will fix it sometime this week other than that just keep doing regular fluid changes and the car will last forever mine is the 2012 SE

I have an 06, new beetle, 2.5 with 5 speed, 130K miles, I am doing thermostat, waterpump, vacuum pump (leaking) - oily mess, new oil pan (dented by PO), oil filter housing & radiator & condenser (due to crash) - Never LOAN your vw to anyone. -- Is there anything else I should do while it is all apart ? Hi HumbleMechanic, I was wondering if you might help me with my 2011 Jetta SE 2.5 liter Volkswagon. We just turned t0 42,000 miles. We do regular maintenance on the car. I have not changed the plugs or wires because it seems that many don't until around 50,000 ? These past couple of months however, the car dies, and cuts out randomly. I have a decent Innova scanner and got a ton of cam cylinder codes/ failures? Myself and a friend ?
/mechanic changed the cam sensor and that initally made a big difference but the problem is still underlying? At times when this is happening the alternator light flashes and the car stutters or stalls' The battery is only 6 months old and the alternator is charging. It is a dangerous condition on the highway and Volkswagen will not acknowledge the defect. Is there any repair advice you can offer? I heard that this problem was a software problem and could be fixed with an update, but I'm a bit skeptical. I've also heard it could be the secondary air pump/sensor?, but I am not a mechanic. The car otherwise has a lot of pep and power along with quick acceleration? Any suggestions you can offer would be very much appreciated. Thank You, John

Would you please elaborate on the SAI pipe retrofit for early MKV 2.5s? Our 2007 Jetta (BGQ engine) has the factory pipe between the pump and kombi valve. On the new pipe, how does the pressure sensor connect to the engine wiring harness? I've searched in my engine bay (and online for clues) but don't see an available open connector.
AFAIK, the new pipe lets you set the SAI readiness monitor through VCDS/OBD11. But this isn't possible without the ECU seeing a signal from that pressure sensor.

So the pipe update is for the MAP cars, not the MAF cars. The sensor changed to a new style inside that pipe. The update technically only applies to cars that had a sensor in the pipe from the factory.
We have found that buying the update kit(with sensor) is cheaper than buying the pipe(with out sensor). So we sell the kit on all cars. It will just not plug in on the MAF cars
Got it. So there's an economical advantage with the update kit if a replacement pipe is needed, but no performance (or rather, convenience) benefit. Is there a way to set the SAI readiness monitor on our Jetta using OBD11? I believe it would be Basic Settings, Group/Channel 77, but this doesn't complete the test.

How often do water pumps, thermostats, oil filter housing and other stuff need to be replaced on the 2.5? I got around 95k miles on my 2011 so I’m wondering what to look out for around the 100k mile mark
I have 135k miles on my 2009 2.5l and the oil filter housing gasket started leaking past 130k miles. The shop I’m going to is quoting me around $1k to get it done. Bolts on intake manifold are rusty/seized so I cannot perform the job myself.
Not sure about the cooling system components. My cooling system is completely original still. I spoke to a couple people on Reddit and they said the water pumps are good for 200k+ miles.

I have to change my valve cover I do most the work myself but the valve cover I had my guy do it for me I do the belts and Idle roller myself on this Coils and spark plugs of course air filter pollen filter every oil change..I do this every 2 years the tune up for my 2006 vw jetta 2.5 runs good 👍
need some info on a 2.5 CBTA timing chain issues and replacement procedure
another issue 2.5's can have are knock sensors going bad quickly. oddly, when it rains hard my 2.5 throws a cel and goes into limp mode. every time I clear it its related to the knock sensor. also 2.5's sound exhilarating with a proper exhaust system.
This has happened to me a few times as well when it's raining heavily

P0327 code knock sensor, yeah what did you do about it, same problem rains or is cold outside it turns on the engine light. The engine loses power still drives but sluggish Has anyone seen a video to replace the sensors, one is a G61 Grey connector cable, which seems I can't buy nobody has it, and the G66 Green connector cable which I just bought, under the engine by the exhaust manifold passenger side. Need a video Please
Tim D Stevens, I just did the knock sensor yesterday. Recommended when the car is cold:
Jack the car up, you will see a heat shield above/around the passenger side axel, two 16mm bolts, remove that, then above that you'll see the two knock sensors behind another heat shield, you will see the bottom bolt, it's a 10mm, and you have to feel at the top, right below the exhaust manifold, there's two more 10mm bolts. Once the second heat shield is removed, a 13mm socket can be used to remove the knock sensor. Make sure you torque it to 20 NM when you replace it. If my instructions seem unclear, I promise you, just get under the car and you'll see that it is very simple. Hope this helps!
