And James carried that burden for a time after I believe too. Fucking shame really, cause they picked the best guy to fill Cliffs shoes at the time.
Jason has admitted in interviews that James disrespected him on the anniversary of Cliff's death. Apparently, everyone in the band loved the Echobrain record, except James, who thought side projects and mistresses were the same thing. They were making a project to celebrate The Black Album hitting a milestone. During down time, Jason was promoting his Echobrain record, and lots of people liked it. James was in another room not having it. Finally, lots of people walk out, and James walks in. He starts asking questions about the record and tour that Jason wanted to do. They eventually get in an argument, and somewhere in the process, James said that "other arrangements can be made." On the anniversary of Cliff Burton's death. That was the day Jason knew he wanted to leave the band.
You can see and hear the tension on that video they shot for the black album while all of this was taking place. Jason said he told Kirk that day he was walking.
Why did they have to haze Jason so much? I understand Cliff's tragedy, but they shouldn't have taken their anger out on Jason. He had nothing to do with it. The reason why they hazed him: alcohol
Your right but they did that because the day after cliff died they started addicting other bass players instead of taking a break to get over cliffs death and Metallica took out all their anger and sadness on cliffs death on Jason.
Because it’s an excuse, James always said that he was hazing Jason, but he never really accept how much of a complete asshole he was to Jason, as doesn’t take responsibility or pushing Jason to leave
Thrash metal is not big on positive, intelligent, gentle feelings. While there's plenty of smart, reasonable metal artists, Ulrich and Hetfield are not in this category: they are petty, greedy, selfish assholes. Notoriously so, even in an industry swollen with ego. They were petty, greedy, selfish assholes to Jason, they were petty, greedy, selfish assholes to Napster users and they're still petty, greedy, selfish assholes to this day. It happens. None of that diminishes their musical qualifications (which are enumerated and debated elsewhere) and the fact that they're a top 10 of all time metal band.
As much as I love Metallica. What they did to Jason was fucked up. They treated him like shit and made his life a living hell yet they’re surprised that he left the band? If I were in that situation and my bandmates hazed me til I couldn’t take it anymore I would’ve left as well. I don’t blame Jason for leaving. I’m sure Cliff would’ve been pissed if James and Lars did that to him
It’s one thing to haze someone new but it’s another thing to absolutely make the dudes life hell all because of cliffs death. Cliff himself probably would not approve of James and lars’ behavior
I don't think Cliff's parents would've approved of the hazing either.. they gave the band their blessing, embraced Jason as the one keeping Cliff's spirit alive and the band, (particularly Lars and James) do THIS to him
Metallica released 48 songs combined on Justice,Black, Load, ReLoad and also 2 songs on S&M which is a combined of 50 songs. And Jason got cred for 3 of those songs: Blackened, My Friend of Misery and Where the Wild Things Are. Imagine what an outsider he must have been. I feel bad for him :( You are awesome Jason!
I can't understand why any band wouldn't give every single member writing credits. Sure, maybe one person comes up with the ideas, but the song doesn't exist until every musician puts their personal touch on it
@@CelestialWoodway not really, seriously?? he was still being treated like he was still playing in clubs and without the credit he actually wont get paid for his contribution.
When Cliff Died ,Jason Gives What is Metal Is .I Know Cliff is better than Jason On bass guitar but holy fuck look at how jason so energetic in stage and how brutal his backing vocal is.
It still baffles my mind how they kept stating that they miss Cliff, and how they wanna keep his legacy alive forever, while treating Jason like THAT. Cliff would've been mega pissed if he had seen all the abuse that James and Lars did to his successor. It was the opposite of everything he stood for. It's sad how their grief turned into anger.
they toughened him up and then they all went into therapy and got shrinks and personal astrologists. Jason was like uhhhhhhh..i got hazed for 15 years and you guys go and do wha?
Yeah they treated him like shit because they're all pussies who never dealt with Cliff's death like men. They just drank it away like scared little boys.
@@Pauly421 everyone handles death different, especially if you actually see the fresh corpse like they did. Cliff was 24. Who at that age thinks about their friends dying? nobody
Don't blame him for leaving. They crapped all over him from the start, and hardly ever gave him credit for any songs that he wrote (only got credit for 3)while with them. The Load album, I can think of at least five songs he should have got credit for (didn't receive credit for no song on the album.)
James is not going to write bass rythyms for you, and then try to play around you with his own rhythm_ you have to play around him or you get drowned out by his higher decibel guitar. It was part of the continuous hazing b.s. that they were doing to him at the time to make him feel like a dwarf under Cliff's shadow. Speaking of which, they did the same to Cliff on at least two songs on the "Master of Puppets" album ("The Thing That Should Not Be", "Welcome Home") at the intro rifts to both songs. My point is this: if Jason successfully played around James rhythm guitar, or provided back up vocals, he should have received credit like Cliff did and I assume Rob does ( haven't listened to a lot of the new albums since Jason left, except "St. Anger".)
@Hugh Mungus why? Those were the best songs that they ever wrote that people could actually hear, understand, and identify with that wasn't to fast to understand the lyrics. That's not counting the ones from the Cliff era that Burton actually was involved with.
@@oddball6731 you're all just afraid of change. almost everyone is. when bands change their sound you get scared and angry because suddenly things changed. bands can do whatever kind of music they want. and with Metallica there will always be a certain group of people who eat their shit up like candy so why does it really matter? why should they bend themselves over double to please some elitist fans who can't move on from the 80s and only do thrash metal? just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's bad. people have different tastes
Imagine if they didnt fire dave. Imagine if they didnt lose cliff. Imagine if they didnt disrespect jason. Damn it hurts my soul not to know what metallica wouldve been like now if any of those things happened...
There are usually many reasons why relationships shatter, but there's always some central factor. Here, it seems to be that Jason was treated like total crap for a decade and a half for something he had nothing to do with, sometimes on stage in front of fans. There's no way to justify that. None! Bands like AC/DC and Def Leppard tragicly had band mates to die, but they didn't turn on the new guy like a pack of wolfs. They welcomed them with open arms and forged on as a brotherhood. At the end, did Jason act out in the best way possible? No. But the dude was so hurt and cut to the core and they offered him no slack; not even then. They just go make a documentary and run him down like a dog while their phsycologist sat there and said nothing. In this clip, they "seem" to offer a little bit of a half-effort appology. But just admitting you've been a jerk isn't enough. Truly appologizing and changing has to take place (repent, repair, and don't repeat), otherwise it's usless and means nothing. I just didn't see that here. I can tell Kirk down deep feels badly about things and might feel he was caught in the middle to an extent. But in their documentary, he never stood up for Jason and would even shoot a little barb here and there. At the end of te day, Metalica has no respect of mine whatsoever. They all had their hands in this. Kirk to lesser extent. James was the ring leader in the past, lesser so now. Lars is still a jerk about it to this day and thinks he's as pure as the driven snow about all of this. It's just sad seeing this sort of thing pan out like this.
So Jason wanted to take a year off. But they didn't want to so Jason left. A few months after Jason left James had to go into rehab for a long time. So they still took the break. Did they at least try to get Jason back when James was back from rehab? It was before they got Rob so they could have asked to have him back.
It wasn't just because he wanted time off. Jason wanted to do side projects and James basically gave jason an ultimatum either be in Metallica and ONLY Metallica or dont be in Metallica. He left because Metallica didnt want him to have the artistic freedom of playing in other bands.
They might have, but if I where Jason I wouldn’t have come back, he talked about sticking to his morals, he’s not a lost puppy, he’s not going to comeback to it’s owner after getting beat up
Jason's dream came true when he joined Metallica, they treated him like shit and started taking the band in a shitty direction so he quit. Good for him.
In August I went by myself to the concert and was able to visit with Jason a bit before the show. He gave me a huge bear hug and was as sweet as ever. When the show was supposed to start, Lars came out and said that James wasn't going to be there because he'd had a jet-skiing accident and was in the hospital. I got a little scared there might be a riot, but Jason was literally the Hero of the Day by taking charge and doing all the singing himself. Kid Rock and others helped out also. Amazing.

Don't let your ego consume you. You're a human, just like everyone else. You don't deserve to be treated any less than another human being, and nobody deserves to be treated less than you. Respect, communication, and honesty are vital for keeping a band from falling apart.
I was in a band for 14 years... and were the most solid band in the area for that time, no egos and we had many different influences, and we made it work!!! Alot of the bands in the area, for years were always changing members, for this reason or that, but I'm fairly 100% certain, egos had a hand it. sadly my alcohol intake, at that time, caused me to lose my position in that band.... so I tried to join 1 or 2 more bands, after one or 2 practice sessions, I saw egos, and I left, i havent played since 2013....
It wasn't Lars or Kirk, it was 100 percent James that pushed Jason out. They edited this video a lot to soften the amount of blame that James deserves, but the part where Lars says "he was told by James that he couldn't release the record" there's way more to it, but that's essentially what was the last straw for Jason. Kirk and Jason were always close, Lars and Jason are actually closer today than they ever were while Jason was in Metallica. Yet James and Jason (although friendly and respectful nowadays) won't be sending each other Christmas cards.
@@jamesb1988 Jason himself said that he and James started becoming friends during the writing for justice. Look up any interview with those 2 in the 90s there’s no tension at all

James and Lars are such huge egos and selfish characters that I think it was vital for the other half of the band to be the opposite. Kirk being so nice and passive and Jason being this really grounded, humble guy with principles.
This may not be the best reason, but I will always remember Jason by his work on the original S&M album. I have the live DVD and I’ve watched it so many times and have always been blown away by Jason’s incredible work during that concert
They bullied him for years...the guy who loved them the most..and they bullied him mercilessly. SMH! I'm so glad he left them! And they've only got themselves to blame.
Now Robert is in the band. He has been in the band longer than Jason now that's cause they are treating him better than Jason cause they knew they fucked up. So they don't want to mess it up again
Carlos Perez Gallo and James’s ego, James gave Jason an ultimatum, either Metallica and nothing else, or you’re out, and Jason left because he wanted to play with echobrain
It wasn't Lars at all, it was James 100 percent. Jason wasn't allowed to contribute, yet wasn't allowed to be in any other band either. During the filming of "Making of The Black Album" in September of 2000, James confronted Jason about what he planned on doing with Echobrain. James asked Jason if he was going to sell T-shirts and tour, and Jason's response was yes, as long as it didn't interfere with Metallica in any way. James did not accept that, and told Jason that "other arrangements can be made" essentially saying that Jason was replaceable and didn't mean shit to him (James). Super sad stuff, all Jason ever wanted was for James to view him as an equal, which James never did.
I saw Jason Newsted preform with Voivod when they opened for Ozzy Osbourne in 2003. He did double duty that night, as he played bass for Ozzys show as well. He plucked out a killer version of No More Tears!
Nobody can compare to jason. He looked metallica. He added such a killer look to the band. Its like he was to perfect of a fit. Too bad he left. Ill always miss seeing him with the band.
***** McGovney actually recorded a lot of old demo tapes, including No Life 'Til Leather. James sounded like a Rob Halford imitator way back in the day, so if you hear high-pitched Halford-James, then chances are McGovney's playing bass and Mustaine's playing guitar. Ron played a lot of live shows with them, but none of them got recorded. There's an interview with him from 1997 (you should be able to find it by typing "Ron McGovney interview 1997" or something into Google) where he talks about meeting Cliff and kind of expecting to be replaced by him.
I guess I would count McGovney, because I'm not sure the band was even named at that point, were they? But, either way, McGovney wasn't any kind of player. He was only talented enough to play in his mom's basement. But, firing Dave, Cliff's death, then the 20 year plus hazing of Jason has to be the end for them.
Jason is really a nice guy, he is my favorite within the group. He visited Manila Philippines in 1996 without the rest of the band - his usual self making the sacrifices. He took time jamming with the local artists in a small quaint, pretty ugly venue but he shared his knowledge and gave praised to the local artists.. I'm one of those Metallica fan that was so disheartened when he chose to leave the band but knowing what he's been going through back then, I think it's worth letting go.. Love you man, I'm your avid fan, still rocking from the early '90's up to present yr 2019! 👏🙌😊
I'm a million percent Team Jason. He gave Metallica complete dedication...they gave him endless mockery and disdain. They'll serve time in hell for what they did to him.
Lars and James used to call him the "whipping boy" they used to snap the grounding prong off of his 4000 watt bass amp, and watch him get 3rd degree electrical burns during his bass takes and made fun of his reaction to the pain. no wonder. you should hear the shit they did to haze Trujillo.

Metallica has had three awesome and incredible bassists, each with their own personality and flair and contributions to the band. What I like best about Lars James and Kirk is that they still like and respect Jason and because of that they admit that it's their fault that he left.
Ray and Jan Burton embraced Jason as the new bassist and said "You are the one. Please be safe." They definitely wouldn't have thought too highly of the hazing the rest of the band, particularly Lars and James put him through...

Jason was James biggest mistake. James couldn’t stand Jason cause Jason not only carried the position of cliff but JASON carried the band when James was burned and couldn’t. November 30th, 2000 was the day Metallica truly died....at least for me anyways. Rob is an amazing bassist in his own right....but he will always be the bassist of Suicidal Tendencies. The heart, soul and aggression of Metallica left with Jason the moment he left.

They eventually get in an argument, and somewhere in the process, James said that "other arrangements can be made." On the
anniversary of Cliff Burton's death. That was the day Jason knew he wanted to leave the band.

Why did they have to haze Jason so much? I understand Cliff's tragedy, but they shouldn't have taken their anger out on Jason. He had nothing to do with it. The reason why they hazed him: alcohol
Lets face it they aren't exactly mature or intelligent people. At least back then.
It happens.

The Load album, I can think of at least five songs he should have got credit for (didn't receive credit for no song on the album.)
How can you be so sure he has anything to do with writing the songs on Load?
Anger".)

It's just sad seeing this sort of thing pan out like this.
so James was a real douchebag?
Well, it seems like AC/DC did exactly the same with Brian Johnson. Only after 35 (!) years.

That's exactly what I was thinking. All that anguish for nothing. Poor Jason.

Mustaine's the only one who they intentionally got rid of. Cliff died, while Jason and Ron McGovney left on their own accord.
