Thank you Mike. I have 2 OM1 Mark 1 and did the 1.7 firmware upgrade on one of them in September. The headline feature was supposed to be better bird subject detect. The main issue I was having was shooting birds in tree using all points subject detect. The camera would always want to focus on branches that were closer to the camera then subject. I set up a test by creating an obstical field in front of a toy bird. The new firmware was day and night better at staying focused on the subject. With the old firmware, it was almost impossible to get the camera to focus on the bird. With the new firmware, it was almost impossible to get the camera to NOTfocus in the bird. Even with objects covering part of the body of the bird focus would stick to the bird.
After having trouble getting my little Lumix GX80 connected via it's own app, I was surprised when I bought OM and found how relatively simple it was to do this on the OM Share app. I can even update the firmware on my Lumix lenses with it! Don't worry about putting in the language and date! I tripped up with that, myself. When you reload the camera settings, that should take care of it.
Thank you Mike! Took me a while to get everything turned on but it worked flawlessly once my brain was engaged. Using an new OM1 MK II that I took delivery of October 3rd. Have been using a pair of Nikon D850's. Lots to learn but the results have been stellar! Excellent video my friend!
Thank you Mike, this is an excellent hands on tutorial. Like you I've waited on this firmware for a couple of months to upgrade, but your video was a timely reminder to do it. I've actually done this very step once before when I bought the camera. A lot easier actually and less risk damaging the port on the camera with a cable. Plus cables and doors are fiddly. All the critical messages are quite stressful the first time one follows the steps, given no-one wants to brick the device or lose camera settings. You're right though, it all works provided all the steps are followed and the device stays on. I will say the bluetooth settings can be accessed on the INFO screen (8th square, second row, right under ISO). Tap it or use the up down keys to access the Bluetooth and WiFi settings. Now to see if there are any differences. 📷
@@MikeLaneFRPSfor that reason, im a bit scared on using that foot especially on a side mounted gimbal where it might put extra pressure on the tripod collar’s clicking mechanism, if it fails, will be an expensive fix here all the way in Australia.😭
Interesting to see this all work smoothly on an Android phone. On my iPhone 14 and original OM-1, there were multiple problems, starting with the phone's camera not being able to focus on the QR code, forcing me to enter the bluetooth and wifi passwords manually. Then the phone displayed a nearly opaque screen over the update, making it nearly impossible to see how things were progressing, and blocking access to the "Next" button. Fortunately I'd done several PC-based updates in the past, so I knew to reboot the camera when it showed the big "OK" screen. I was then able to reconnect and reload my custom settings. Hopefully this video will help anyone who finds themselves in a similar predicament. I'll probably go back to using the PC on the next update. And speaking of weather: I walked the West Highland Way last August, and I invented many names for all the storms. Mine probably wouldn't be acceptable to the Met Office, though.
Mike, depends on the camera. For example, with the Nikon Z8 the Firmware 2.0 was like getting a whole new camera - the AF was vastly improved. I believe many folks are Leary of flashing a buggy firmware, and breaking their cameras. This does happen (recently happened to my Sony A1) and with Sony there is no way to revert the failed FW. This is where the camera manufacturer should be responsible to correct the issue but that often means waiting months before a fix is available. I will state that I prefer Nikons method of handling FW, as they allow you to revert to previous versions. Anyway good luck Sir!
It's never easy is it! I found I had to go through a few more steps to get the camera and phone to communicate with each other, rather than the simple steps you went through. It took me a while to realize I had to go into my connections settings and turn on Data Roaming and to change from my named internet to the one named OM........ Also, at various points in the process I had to change them back so I could download the FM Update from my named internet to my phone, then go to the OM........ internet to load the update from my phone to the camera. I had to do this to reload the camera's settings as well. Your video really helped though, so thank you for the info.
Thanks for this Mike, best video on how to do this I've seen and at a good pace to. I do believe you have to have a card in the card slot for this, am I correct?
I seem to remember you are right, but also do not think you needed to with previous updates. Also I do not remember having to enter the date and time before. Could be my memory is letting me down.
Thanks for the video. I’m usually with you with updates generally but I did jump in on the firmware update for the OM-1. I think it is 1.7. Anyway my experience is that I think it makes a difference to the AF on the M.Zuiko 100-400, but I did not notice any difference on the M. Zuiko 300 f4 PRO. I would be interested to know what others found. Thanks again.
@ thanks for the confirmation. I haven’t used my 300 pro since trying it out. Those using the 150-400 probably wouldn’t notice a difference either. I was tempted to buy this lens despite being a bit too heavy and expensive. Now definitely not worth it. The rest is up to me.
@@tonyblake8841 this firmware update has renewed my commitment to the OM 1 , so I bought a 40 - 150 f2.8 which has proven to be a great buy, with the 14TC I have a 56-210 f4 which is very sharp
I’ve been thinking about that lens also but with rumours of a 50-200 I’m holding off. BTW, looks like you’re in Australia by your honeyeater avatar. I’m in Brisbane.

Features on the OM-1 I was dreaming of are already on the Sony A9III and soon to be coming on the A1 mark 2 . It is amazing how technology comes in fits and spurts. I am hoping and thinking Sony's latest iteration/version is the perfect camera and I don't have to buy another ! 🤔
You will need the next cameras with auto zoom to keep the perfect image size and subject detection panning so the camera follows birds in flight. You may need an electronic tripod head for the 2nd feature.
@@MikeLaneFRPS I have just been videoing some Marsh Harrier action in Suffolk . I will need two of those cameras, especially when I had two Male Harriers split off the same flight path and go in different directions . 🤨
Thank you, I have bricked my camera twice doing updates but have just followed your instructions and firmware updated without any issues.
Glad it helped
