Saw him in concert in '77.Opened with this film.Crowd booed at first, wanting to see Steve live.what they payed for.But after seeing this, wild cheers, even before he came on the stage.Great memories!
I saw this for the first time at the Univ.of Maryland 1977. Steve Martin opened for Steve Goodman , and I and Peter Kaufman (now Dr.Kaufman) got backstage passes and met both Steves! Martin was wearing his signature white suit and gold American Gold piece watch. Great show, got some good pictures too. He played this video as a way of introduction.
Absolutely hilarious. Steve Martin is a comedy genius, and such a joy to watch. I forgive him of his recent, ahem, films.... he's done so much good stuff.
Thank you sooooooo much for posting! This is a real gem!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had never seen it even though I've always been a big Steve Martin fan. Now I'll share.... Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried to find this online a few years ago to no avail. It's great to see it again, though I can't recall where I saw it the first time. I saw Steve live at a theater on the campus of the University of Colorado - Boulder, probably 1977 or 1978. Maybe it was shown there. His live show was outrageously funny, and it included the arrow through the head trick.
First time i ever saw Steve Martin was this short before the main feature at the movies. This is the first time I've seen it since. This is awesome! LOL.
2019 I've never seen this and cracking up...never a big fan of Steve Martin as a stand up comedian. His skits and the movie, "Dirty Rotten Scandals" I watch every time I come across it on tv.
I used too show this as a training video for servers when I worked in Maine in the 80's at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant. The staff used to get a chuckle out of it.
Check out "Steve Martin: The Television Stuff" from Shoutfactory. It includes his TV specials like "Comedy Is Not Pretty" and "The Absent Minded Waiter" :)
While Steve Goodman was animated and totally accessible before his show, Steve Martin was more reclusive and not approachable pre show. I wandered into his dressing room by mistake before the show and was quickly ushered out, but not before seeing a vast array of goodies {food stuffs} laid out on a long table. After the show Steve Martin stopped to sign my backstage pass and chat for about 10 seconds, before leaving in a nice limo.. Fun, Fun, Fun......
I must be in a mood. I loved The Jerk, as a kid seeing this I felt sorry for the waiter. He's just supposed to be a mindless doofus, and I shouldn't over analyze, maybe the PC bug got into my skull, dammit all!
I own this video but can't find it. Have not seen this in a long time. I used to watch it over and over like an addiction. I have ordered curly maple surprise many times when out to eat.
Ahah I was literally like him on the first day of work as a waiter taking the wrong orders and forgetting the drinks etc and eventually take heat from Chef !
@atozzzzzzz Wow... I have this sketch at the beginning of one of his live shows from the Universal Ampitheatre I think. What was Steve Martin like to meet?
I not speak good english but the funny because the waiter giving the money $10,000 but the customer not leave the tip. I remember this when so young before and I watch in Spanish then we go sometimes restaurant my father take me and my mother but the food in nice restaurant never nice so I joking i want $10,000 for eat the food nobody understand the joke they very offensive so I explain them then they know.
Notice how she stopped caring, about anything,...once the money started to roll in...... (Most) Women....The same, then, 5 years ago, today, tomorrow, etc.
You said that as if all couples are in the same age group or have good chemistry with each other, which isn't nearly true for a lot of people in real life, never mind a fictional comedy short.
It was the 70's, a time when rich powerful older horn dog type men dating much younger out-of-their-class gold digger type women was still socially acceptable. In the 60's, this practice was more or less widespread and encouraged--mostly by the horn dog men and the gold digger women.
Short and sweet. What a gem.
It's been years since I've seen this. Perfect length and quintessential Steve Martin! I thought I was going to see Andre and Wally at one point.
Much under-rated as a gifted comic actress and a true beauty. Thanks Terri !
I saw Steve Martin November 1977 in Tulsa; the theater screened this short before he took the stage.
What an experience that must have been!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
70's in Bay Area, California, also screened this during the performance.

Nominated for an academy award (best short), and was part of a 2 project deal the second being 'The Jerk' and was Steve Martins big Hollywood break..
this is not a tv sketch but a movie short that was nominated for an academy award.
I love his "Bahamas" face.
Teri Garr is a vision! Love love love her. Roll, roll, roll in the zee hay!
It's been 30 years since I saw this. Thanks for posting it!

Oh my God it has been so many years since i last saw this, since I saw a little kid!!
Absolutely hilarious. Steve Martin is a comedy genius, and such a joy to watch. I forgive him of his recent, ahem, films.... he's done so much good stuff.
Genius 😊
happy what would have been Steve Martin's 96th birthday!!
Thank you sooooooo much for posting! This is a real gem!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had never seen it even though I've always been a big Steve Martin fan. Now I'll share.... Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant, priceless!
Damn, but that's good. I haven't seen it since about 1985. Steve Martin is a funny guy.
“Sorry I went to the Bahamas for a moment!” I’m using that line in daily conversation 😂
Brilliant sketch, loved it!
"How about some nice Dutch sugared jellycake? It's good for you..." (looks up, vaguely reminiscing about something, pulls long, smug smile-face)
Thanks for posting this.

This was one of the opening vignettes to his 1977 live video. The other was a joke interview containing a VERY young looking Dave Letterman

wow, this is a rare find. thank you.
I came here after interviewing Carl Gottlieb for my site Movie Guy 24/7. I never saw it before. It's a riot.
i love this video!! thanks for a.) finding it out there in video land, and b.) for posting it on youtube. :-)
"and Hold the onions."
LOL
I used too show this as a training video for servers when I worked in Maine in the 80's at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant. The staff used to get a chuckle out of it.
I first saw this on HBO in the late 70s. They used to show a lot of these shorts back then. _The Chalice, The Translator, Hardware Wars_ etc.
I think Steve Martin is a genius. This skit challenges that theory.
I thought Martin Short was there, because it said "A Steve Martin Short" at the beginning lol Silly me!
I miss the seventies, you got value for your money.
I can't believe they haven't released his special including this on DVD...at least last I checked.
Check out "Steve Martin: The Television Stuff" from Shoutfactory. It includes his TV specials like "Comedy Is Not Pretty" and "The Absent Minded Waiter" :)
Steve Martin’s great at playing idiots like the Jerk, Inspector Clouseau, the absent-minded waiter etc. 😂

superb!

A Steve, Martin Short. 😁
RIP Teri Garr.
I own this video but can't find it. Have not seen this in a long time. I used to watch it over and over like an addiction. I have ordered curly maple surprise many times when out to eat.

Steve Steve Steve !
It's why it won an Oscar.

Now that’s a waiter!!! LOL
It's good for you. ;D
I know where I'm eating tomorrow!
The muppet movie makes a lot of sense now
This was nominated for an Oscar but it lost out to an even funnier short subject about spina bifida.
In fairness, spina bifida is hilarious.
A lard omelet! Yum!
This establishment would make Gordon Ramsay catatonic
FUCKING GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LARD OMELETTE
Teri Garr. The perfect woman.
Funny. Hahaha.
lol wheres that restaurant.
isnt she the actress from Young Frankenstein?
Yes, and many other great parts. Black Stallion, Close Encounters . . . wonderful, so funny.
I like it! But EXCUSE ME!
this is too funny
Where the hell did you find this!? I love it.
It was the opening for his first tour.
If only he could social distance!

When
did Steve Martin show this at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC? Thanks.
Where's that Restaurant?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
PIGs must have been here
Serve the salad undressed!
WACO TEXAS
Buck Henry is 14 years older than Teri Garr. Why don't they cast couples more closely matched in age?
Notice how she stopped caring, about anything,...once the money started to roll in...... (Most) Women....The same, then, 5 years ago, today, tomorrow, etc.
You said that as if all couples are in the same age group or have good chemistry with each other, which isn't nearly true for a lot of people in real life, never mind a fictional comedy short.
Because they were funny.

👎👎
this dude is over-rated! maybe it was funny 40 years ago but not now!
your greatest achievement...an online commentary about Steve Martin.
I'm sorry but I can't understand your lack of sense of humor. Good comedy is good comedy anytime.
