I have long thin loose wavy hair and when I do the unicorn cut I feel like my ends look too thin and when I did the pigtail cut the shortest layers were like an inch above the ends of my hair so I felt like it doesn’t do anything for making my hair more wavy 😩 I even tried putting the pigtails high and directing upwards like you said. Not sure if I just need to cut off more (I’m precious about my length). How long are your layers on the pigtail cut? My hair is similar to yours, including length. I’ve been having a hard time with my hair holding it’s shape lately and when I look at older pics where my hair looked good I had shorter layers, but probably thinned ends too.
It feels like the room for error would be the largest with the pigtail cut. You'd have to get two pigtails placed exactly symmetrically on your head, and then cut off exactly the same amount without being able to compare them.
I have put a comment about the beard cut to @wavygirljessie . I will just copy and paste what I put in case you can't find it. I would love you to try the beard cut. It is like the pigtail cut only you bring both your pigtails under your chin and tie them together. That way you are guaranteed to get an even length as you are cutting them together. It gives you a u-shape at the back and not a v shape. If you then want to add a few layers, you can then do a single unicorn cut and just take off the required amount. I did forget to mention that you don't tie your pigtails separately, but just bring your two pieces of hair that you have divided into pigtails and tie them together under your chin. You are only using one hair tie!🙂
I've been doing the unicorn cut and I did start due to hair dressers saying "don't worry you'll love it" and then experiment by hacking of chunks of my hair. This has happened a couple times to me since my stylist of 20 years moved across country. So I've done these cuts and they all look pretty good. My SIL thinks my hair looks best when I do it myself! I agree!
I agree! I'm from Germany and the most hairdressers here are not really cut curles well or know how to cut. I don't know if they learn enough about natural curles in their hairdresser training and how to cut these 🤷 The best is I do it myself!

First, you can prevent the bottom from getting too thin by sectioning straight around your hair from ear to ear and bringing that forward to cut, while leaving the bottom alone. Second, you can really see all those hard, choppy layers when you styled your hair straight. To prevent that, be sure to turn your shears and snip vertically into the edge before removing the hair tie, breaking up the hard chunky edge. Even thinner hair benefits from softening that harsh line.
Thank you for sharing! Do you know of any videos showing that? I'm a visual person so I can't quite picture it 😩 I prefer not to point cut my hair, I used to in the beginning but I didn't like how my curls got too thin at the ends, I like them to be more chunky 😂👌🏻 I've recently straightened my hair (the tymo video) too and you can't notice the layers like you can in the clip I shown here 🤭
I've done both the unicorn cut and the double unicorn cut and liked them. But i do feel like my longer hair is starting to look sparse on the bottom. So now I'm thinking I may have to try the pigtail cut. Thanks for sharing this! It was very helpful.
@@wavygirljessie I did do it on my twin sister a year or so ago, but I haven't had the chance to do it on myself yet. 😅 Hopefully I'll find the time soon.
Quite a few times I have heard hairdressers say that it doesn't really matter what the back kinda looks like just as long as the front is framing as you talk face to face with people not face to back of head. And with styling, pinning, clipping and hair spraying you can make it look good or at least decent.
I'd rather it look good front and back though, because sometimes I have my hair infront of my shoulders or sometimes I put it all behind my shoulders and down my back 😂
This video was so helpful!! I've been debating cutting my own hair for a little while but couldn't decide on a method. Going to give pigtail a whirl tomorrow!
Hi I,ve tried both of Manes cuts and I like the pigtail cut the best. Just like you I found that the ends thinned out when cutting the ponytail cut and looked thicker when cutting the pigtailcut. 😃 I recently saw two cuts from Paul Watts that I thinking of trying, the 3 ponytail cut and the butterfly cut. Maybe you could try them? 😘 Keep up the good work, love your channel ❤
I recently did the pigtails cut by mel and personally for my hair it's not enough layers. I love the shape of it but it's important for me to have more layers or it's hard for me to detangle it. I might try the unicorn cut by mel in another 6 months 😆
Ooh I haven't tried that haircut yet, I'll definitely have to try it in the future! This Friday's video will be the butterfly cut that I finally got round to trying 😍
When you do the pigtail cut with the pigtails higher, do you still cut the hair at the same angle being a right angle to the floor, or do you cut on a diagonal?
I do the Pigtails Cut since i saw the Video by Manes by Mel 🥰❤️👌..it is my favorit Cut....it makes soft Layers....with Volume..so easy to Cut with a good sharp Scissor..this is absolut importent for Cut your Hair at Home..👌..i Wish i had your beautiful length..🥰❤️❣️..my Hair is thick,2b-2c Waves..but i never come to this length ..🤷.. absolut Stunning 🥰❤️😍❣️
Great vid! But just a bit of constructive criticism; that mic is meant to be clipped to your lapel and we’d still be able to hear you perfectly. The mic was so close to your mouth you were making it out and it was popping. Just a bit of constructive criticism from someone who works in audio. You want the audio to sound natural and it will if you put the mic on your lapel, not held up to your mouth :)
I've tried that before but I felt like it didn't pick up my voice as well, and if I adjusted the sensitivity on the camera it picked up too much background noise 😫 And I felt sometimes I moved my hands too much so either hit it or had to keep taking it off when I wanted to move around and show my hair (not so much in this video but in others) so I just found it easier to use like this 😅 If you have any tips on how I can solve these issues I'd love to know!
Why the heck would you feel guilty about cutting your own hair, and filming it? It's your hair, your tools, and a video of yourself doing it. I don't get it.
@@wavygirljessie I actually cut about an inch off the back the other day. I'm trying to fix the hack job that I did a while back. Still not totally fixed, yet. I've been doing some searching, layer or not to layer, that is the question. Lol! Anyway, I've figured that my curls are better when they are whole, like Marsia's Curls & Jannelle O'Shaughnessy, so they have just light layers on top. Then, I saw someone showing the triple unicorn cut & just did the top section. Also, I like the wide U shape instead of the V shape & saw Manes by Mel video on how to get the wide U from the V.
I wore it straight a lot this year when I was going through a bit of a depressive episode and it looked good. I think if you go on the video where I recently coloured my hair I show it straight in that video
You section the front part of your hair (the bangs section) away which is what matters most when you part your hair. Then you do middle part so the hair is even all the way around
@@wavygirljessie Girl, my entire hair is less than one of your thinnest braids, so I'll join you on the hair envy train :)) Sarah's hair is out of this world, but yours is amazing as well :)
If we lose up to 100 strands a day and with hair getting caught in your curls and not falling out until washday, you could potentially be looking at up to 500 strands 🤭 but it's probably much less than that
Thank you so much for the amazing video! 🤍 As someone who also cuts their hair at home this was super helpful! You're welcome! I'm so glad you found it helpful 🥰 you'll have to let me know how you like the pigtail cut once you try it! I didn't like it at first because I was all for layers but as my hair got longer and my ends got thinner the pigtail one definitely grew on me 😂👌🏻
I also forgot to add that unicorn haircuts are probably better for looser curl patterns 🤭 which is your favourite?

MORE room for error. Right?
