@Toca fun i lobe jason. You can’t replace him. Just like you can’t replace Cliff. I’m glad they didn’t try to. Robert is great bur no he’s not jason. However i understand many new fans will like him as well or better and thats fine. Metallica made a fine choice to keep the Metallica train 🚂 chugging on down the line! Rob’s had some big shoes to fill and has done it admirably!!!!
Keep Rob and bring Jason back!! Why can't one of the baddest Metal bands on earth have two Bassists? I heard Metallica play with Rob and Jason at some other event and it sounded just as good. Slap+ pick x two bass guitars = AWESOME.
Finally, somebody who doesn't think Cliff Burton or Go Home. I think their bass players became more talented as they kept replacing them, but I do like Jason a whole lot. And Justice For All is the only Metallica album I can actually tolerate these days.
@@Metal-Possum I'm a "purist", so Cliff will always be GREAT, but ..., unfortunately, he wasn't able to continue with the band. IMO,... they were EXTREMELY LUCKY to have found Jason to "fill the gap", so to speak . No disrespect to Robert, ( who, btw, ... is an outstanding bassist) , but I still see Jason as the "heir apparent" to Metallica's baseline, ( whenever James , and Lars would allow it...)..... Just my two cents.....
People don't realise that not only was Jason a fantastic bassist and song writer, but when he left Metallica lost another frontman. The dude brought so much energy and charisma. And is easily the most likeable dude to have ever played in the band.
A great example of this is the first concert with the San Francisco Symphony in 1999. Jason was in total command of that performance, arguably even more than James was. You can tell James was pretty nervous performing with the Symphony but Jason was in his element.
Don't say Robert should get out of the way. This intended to be a reunion of members of Metallica. And Robert is part of it. It is nice to see Jason back. For me, his problem was this: Cliff Burton. His dead give a shade all over Metallica bass place. He was amazing. And for me, Jason was also amazing. He went on his road, like in so many other jobs or families. And life went on. Now is Robert an it also is amazing. The problem with Metallica, never was the bass player (despite Cliff's death). It was a matter of egos. Somehow, is hard to understand how Kirk survived. But all that is part of what made Metallica. They were not perfect. Just like that best friend we have. We know he is not perfect. We know all their issues. But we love him for what he is, issues included.
I have never seen any bassplayer that was so into the music. Look how intense Jason is playing. Look from 3:52 till 4:33. Jason feels the music so much! 4:33 for example. Amazing!
@@FlipGuitarist80 I'm with you man. Of course they aren't the same as they were 30 years ago, but Jason brought that sparkle in that's not that much present anymore.
Rob, love the spirit and the guy is like a monk in a heavy metal band but really it looked awkward at times when he was doing the weird back vocals. again great bass player and great guitar composer but man Jason was a more aggressive fit for metallica, he even pushes James to higher more aggressive limits.
I was born at Jason Newsted Era and i must say i can’t picture Metallica without Jason as bassist. He really looks like what a metallica members should be. Lol
the 2 things jason does as soon as the song starts going. 1) goes to his favorite spot beside the drums, wheres hes been for decades touring. like a true bassist he listens to the drums. 2) resumes his non-stop headbanging. nobody in metal, not even slayer headbang like jason. loved the binge and purge tours that was history in the making.
Man I have a ton of respect for ROB but OMFG! JASON despite always playing with pick he sounds so fucking terrific AWESOME! Oh god, why! ? WELCOME BACK JASON! PLEASE COME BACK!
+Shayne O'Neill I'm a lefty and play left handed and I play both fingers and pick. Not really hard. But I see where your coming from. I found it hard to adapt to pick I wanted to play pick because Paul McCartney does. Now I can do both
Technically, I'm ambidextrous, and can play on both sides. Personally, if I'm playing something fast, I prefer to use fingers, and if it's slower and thuddier, like this^, I'll use a pick. There's nothing wrong with either, as long as it benefits the song. Anyone who says otherwise will be challenged to a bass duel.
Fingers let you play more complicated stuff simply because of the physics of it. But a pick has better timbre. In the studio its usually better to use a pick because it'll sound better, but sometimes fingers are the only way to go especially when playing stuff across string. Matter of taste really. The real question is why don't more *guitarists* use fingers. Theres stuff thats literally impossible on a guitar with a pick.
I'm loving the punk rock look James has got going on here. And Rob lookin' like Jesus. No better song to have Jason back for, not just because it's from his era, but those backing vocals of his on Harvester were always so *killer.*
It's the horrible, debilitating condition called life. Humans, these ape creatures, have such short lifespans. And we'll all be long dead before the scientists finally figure out how to change that...if they ever do at all.
Cliff and Jason both played with soul so them over Rob for sure but it's hard to split the other 2..prob just nudge Jason as he was there thru their prime and aggressive
donangry the management had a big part of it too. They could have cared less if jason left. But most of the blame was james at the time. Jason wanted to take the year off james said no we gotta start a new record. I wish jason would come back. Out of all those guys he honestly looks and sounds the best.
James’s ego, too proud. Him and Jason could’ve worked things out, Jason I think just wanted them to realize their stupid ways. There’s a scene on SKOM where they mentioned that he wanted to come back. I understand that Jason didn’t wanna do the therapy bullshit and that he wanted all four of them just to talk things out. So yeh I’d say most of the blame is on James.
I know it sounds like a shitty thing to say, and I have nothing but love for Robert, but I would have enjoyed this more if it would have been Jason playing bass by himself. It was only going to be a few songs on one night. Robert still would have been the man going forward with no harm done. I just would have enjoyed it more if it were Jason alone.
Rob never seemed the right choice to me, don't get me wrong great bass player but Jason just suited and gave the band the complete look! Great to see him getting such a response
Anybody who says Jason sucks or Jason was not Metallica go and watch Harvester or Sorrow from San Diego 1992. Then express your opinions. Jason was the man with Metallica and NO one can say otherwise.
I love how Jason gives Rob a pound but gives the rest of the band a hug. I know he's still in the Metallica family and i also know it goes deeper than that...Its great to see him with the agin, welcome back Jason...
anyway it's all in the past, Metallica are still doing what they can at their age, you have to respect them. but old aggressive soul is gone. its natural that it happens at that age, with money, kids, families, your priorities shift man but now and then you see the old metallica in brief instances. here and there. still much respect to this band.
This song imo will always be my Favorite song and personally I think Metallica's best. Just listen to the anger-filled riffs in this song especially the riff that comes in right before the vocals I mean that riff is just pure testosterone \m/

Two bassists playing a song that is of And Justice For All. The irony.

Erik Sjowall He is, still, what Metallica used to be. He cares. He spills it all, every time. He plays like it matters.
Dude Jason has written badass riffs for metallica

Tom Araya did. He was a brutal headbanger
