As a Brit and a drummer, I can honestly say.. Our finest export.
Simon is such a cool guy, he really has got something to say. No empty chit chat, no BS, but just substantial conversation. And of course the greatest drummer on the planet and a fine producer as well.
Phillips engineering with Toto is great, the sound on Totos Phillips-records are outstanding.
Tambu..is my favorite album with Simon on it..love everything Toto has puted out thou, Toto is an Amazing Talented Rock Icon who deserves all the acolytes
Mr. Phillips, Please come back, and Rise up Toto.
Toto is in quarantine... aka COVID.
Again great job with these Simon interviews John! Cud listen to him for hours. FIB is indeed a great great album sonically. Slightly surprised Simon didn’t mention the new Derek Sherinian album The Phoenix which he played on. A whole bunch of talent on that album. Sadly, it probably will be a tough time for musicians for at least the near future and probably longer. In any case, Simon is awesome, great interview and great guy (met him once). Wish him all the best.
I believe that Derek Sherinian & Simon both contributed to the new Michael Schenker album due out in January 2021. A lot of excellent musicians being featured on that album.
Also, Simon Phillips was the original drummer on the very first MSG album in 1980.
Another great one, Simon is one of the best talkers ever, and hes just about the most awesome drummer alive
Simon is one of the drum gods of my youth...Pete Townshend’s “Give Blood” is a drumming masterpiece.
I hope it's possible to see Simon and toto reunite.
Luke, Joseph and Simon in a new configuration of Toto. Won't that be awesome!
always great John - this was good insight into his tenure with the band.
Sonically, FIB and Tambu are the best sounding Toto albums with Simon on drums
@ShadowAngel Agree... the sound of Simon's Drumkit was the same on every song and the arrangement sounds the same on pretty much all the songs on FIB... then again, the songs are just great! But sonically, Mindfields is MUCH better engineered, and they tweaked the drums here and there to get different sounds. From the four albums Simon did with the band, I would say Mindfields is my favourite.
Even Mindfields and Through The Looking Glass were brilliant.
Tambu, Mindfields, Through The Looking Glass, and especially Falling In Between are some of Toto's best studio albums! Not to mention their live DVDs during those years such as 25th Anniversary - Live In Amsterdam. Simon brought that unique sound to Toto. He is a class act and my favorite drummer, and also a top notch engineer and producer. Hope that Toto can somehow continue with new music/new studio album and tour, with Luke, Joseph, hopefully Steve P, and Simon back in the chair. That's one configuration of Toto I think we can all live with.
Absolutely agree... THAT configuration has to come back + a NEW album. However, I do hope Dave´s health will improve... I´m praying for that.
One day soon, we will know the truth and the truth will set us free to live again...
Awesome drummer... awesome host... awesome guys...that's my post!
Well done, Simon is an excellent soul...
I can listen to Simon reminisce all day …
Simon changed my life when I was 9 years old. His drumming got me through my childhood. It's difficult to watch him and so many people go through this ridiculous time. Great interviews!
Simon Philips is the first music icon to come out and say it, Bravo. SP.
The fact that Simon as one of the greatest musicians of our generation is barely breaking even financially is an absolute disgrace. Stop streaming, get out there and buy the albums and go to the gigs wherever and whenever you can
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. I love Simon’s playing, and he’s also a great man
Simón Phillips is so sweet and charming . Love him 😊
I Just want to say that simón played in two of my favorite bands: TOTO and ASIA. Do we need anything else to add?
This guy is just a legend. Long live simon phillips.
Thanks for sharing. I miss Simons drumming with Toto....
"I will remember", Thank you Simon.
Very interesting! Thank you so much.
I like it so much you often interview Simon. He's one gem of information. Thx for this.
I hope the social distancing wont stay, we all get colds and the flu, lets hope we go back to normal in the next year, and I can make a new selfie with you Simon and chat and get your autograph I would really mis that and lets hope for the best!
Yeah. Si is a MONSTER.... Some folks forget his engineering chops.
I work in the casino business. We're not booking touring entertainment until 2021. Possibly Spring. Grip & grins are gone.
My favorite with Simon is Tambu..
simon phillips makes me a drummer
Wonderful interview!
Greatfull Simon
The album Falling In Between is ONE of the reasons Toto should NOT have released that ALL IN Box set. If they couldn't include it, get whatever rights you have to get to include ALL of their albums INCLUDING the brilliant Jean-Michel Byron tracks from the greatest hits album. Otherwise, the Box Set will ALWAYS be known to me as ALMOST ALL IN. So ridiculous.
First of all, Falling In Between is not released on Sony Records. The box set is the The Sony Records albums that are remastered. Second of all; while the tracks with Byron may be brilliant, he certainly was not.
1. On The Run was recorded for Kingdom Of Desire and left off.
2 Daves Gone Skiing was on Tambu not Toto XX.
Also Sony isn’t about to help another record company sell records.
I hope that Through The Looking Glass and especially Falling In Between will both be remastered and re-released on CD and vinyl at some point in the future by the two respective labels.
Not everybody, I had my chiropractor get in top of me few inches of my face without a mask, I said doc. Where is you mask? He said in the office, & why you are not wearing it? He said am not infectious today. WTF !!
Love Simon Phillips, but Toto is Jeff! SP was just a session musician on the band. My opinion.
Yeah, a “session musician” who not only played in the band for 22 years, but also mixed and engineered albums for them as well. Yeah, that guy wasn’t in the band at all.
Tambu, Mindfields, Through The Looking Glass, and Falling In Between all count, and are some of Toto's best studio albums! Not to mention their live DVDs during those years such as 25th Anniversary - Live In Amsterdam.
