Simon, you might consider yourself "small", but you are a GIANT in terms of talent, gentlemanship and clout in the music biz!
I’m one of the few people that actually lived The Who’s ‘89 tour. Simon Phillips was one big reason. His work with Townshend’s Deep End live work was delightful as well.
That was when I first really learned of Simon, and loved him ever since. Then I remembering first hearing Roger Daltrey's live album, "A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who" and really loving Simon's style on that as well.
I saw that tour with about 50k in Oakland Stadium CA
I remember going to see Toyah in Cardiff in 1982 and Simon was her drummer along with bass legend Phil Spalding. Great concert that I will never forget. The guys could really play!
Thank you so much for letting your guests talk. Something of a rarity these days.
7:23 “So I found the demos, but only the drum part” .... “Oh no... there’s no music” .....😳 My God Simon what are you talking about. You are the music. Your drums are one of the best music I’ve been listening to. You are the most preferable drummer when it comes to performing a drum part with a feeling and a taste. You are an incredible talented and intelligent musician. Thank you for the music and keep it up man 👍🤩😀❤️🍻
What a lovely chap and, of course, stunning musician
Such a Great Interview, Simon Phillips great hard working Drummer, His 6 CD Box set with 2 Outake CD's is Fantastic.
Great interview with Simon.
SIMON ONE OF THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WHOLE WORLD
I’ve seen Simon many years ago in my hometown Hannover/Germany at a drum work shop, what a jaw dropping moment !!!
I remember seeing him on German TV writing a song from start to finish with a band.I think it was progressive rock jazz thing years ago.
Love to see that again.
His work with Pete Townsend. Was my favorite
Wow, this is an incredible interview....love the Stanley Clarkestory.........and the story the lengths he had to go to reproduce his work, and the truth about selling the work for its real worth is really staggering...as musicians, we all have experienced the reality of self financing projects, and most of it is in the artist’s hands
Simon is one of the all time great musicians of the past 40 years, drummer, composer, producer, just outstanding. A living example that tough times don’t last, tough people do ! 👍
Stanley Clarke recorded a song on his "Journy To Love" album called "Hello Jeff". It was Stanley on bass, Jeff Beck on guitar & Lenny White on drums. I'm sure you can UA-cam it. Brilliant tune
Love that song - need to finish learning it on guitar.
I tried to make an interview with Steve Lukather when he was in Hamburg with Los Lobotomies. It was before their concert in the „Fabrik“ but after my first question Steve made some nasty and real stupid comments. I was with a guy who had to make all the photos of this event and there also have been all the other band members in the room when this strange situation happend.
Right before the situation escalated completely Simon came, looked at Steve and intervented in a very soft and sensitive way.
So Steve went away and I made an excellent interview with Simon.
But I will never forget the strange situation with Steve.
Interesting story... :-/
Simon, absolutely wonderful to watch you deliver every time you play. Incredible chops and a humble soul - nice. Really enjoy the Protocol 4 studio sessions. I’ll continue to follow you and your projects, can’t help staying connected. Oh yeah, hope you have time to throw more tutorials out and about. Apart from giving us hope as musicians, they give some background to your journey as an amazing, balanced intelligent musician. OK, enough said. Take Care.
Saw him with Toto , fantastic !
Wow, it's hard enough to lose your house... but imagine all your work on top of that! Simon's clearly a brilliant man, made of sturdy stuff!
That’s the part I didn’t understand. How did he loose his house? What happened?
@@hans-christiantraute1914 ultimateclassicrock.com/thomas-fire-simon-phillips/
@@hans-christiantraute1914 That was what I was wondering too?
@@stevemartin7721 It was burnt down in one of the Californian fires, and he has had a lot of trouble with the insurance company.
I’m was sitting with drummer Jeff Campitelli a short time ago , I was picking his brain & getting tips. I’m not sure who mentioned Simmon first but Jeff lit up with complements of how nice & helpful and respect and what a talented drummer he is He told me some songs to study (in my dreams) lol
Anyway great interview.
You are doing some great work here John.
This info is just so interesting. Thanks
Simon is one of my favorite drummers! So precise and his timing is impeccable! I didn’t realize he did a Protocol box set! How can I purchase one?

Class act ...
He is...Thanks for watching...John
801 LIVE. !!!!!!
I discovered Simon whilst listening to mike Rutherford's album Smallcreeps Day (one of my favorite albums). I was like, wow! Then, I unexpectedly "met" him again on the Judas Priest album Sin After Sin.
If you hadn't already, you should check him out on the Michael Schenker group 1 album!! 😊 Good stuff 😃
"There and Back" is my favorite album by Jeff Beck. And Phillips wrote a lot of the material!
FANTASTIC ALBUM!!!!!!!
I THANKFULLY have one of the box sets! LOVE IT! So happy I have mine! :-)
Thank God I was born in 1960. I didn't miss the best 30 years ever. And yes I did get to go in Studio 54 during its best time. Again thank God I didn't miss it.... "what restrictions" ? 😛😀 ✌🏽❤
I See Simon Play At The Midtown Bar In Manhattan Stitch Bar & Blues

I have to say this, I don't know why it's not mentioned often, but SP is not only a giant of a musician, but honestly just a handsome bloody man.
My claim to fame,i shook his hand after a show in Melbourne.
Would like to know something about his collaborations with Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Jon Lord, David Coverdale.
Nice interview with one of the greats! If you haven’t heard it, do yourself a favor and check out “Blue Wind Over Yokohama”, a Mr. Peach boot from the 1980 Jeff Beck tour of Japan. Incendiary!! The boots from the ‘78 tour of Japan, with JB, Stanley Clarke, SP and Anthony Hymas are also great (but imo the 80 show is unparalleled).
john punter credits include- procol harum, japan, slade, roxy music...
If I’m not mistaken there was nothing mentioned about Simon being “nervous” about another musician. Simon is one of my favorite drummers, you don’t need to trick your subscribers into watching. 🤔
2:07 He said he was “pretty nervous” about Stanley Clarke.
How sad. I tried to purchase on Amazon , was not available.
How about pre-sale?
Also how about some face book live, promote, & hey support?
Otmaro got a cool thing going?
F.b presence, promo, generate, print, sell,
Listen to the album from Big Country, The Buffalo Skinners. The drummer on this album is ...... YES it’s Simon.
We lost a giant. RIP Jeff Beck
Two words: Kick. Starter.
John Punter worked with Roxy Music.
Apollo 19!
Didn't he even play on Michael Schenkers first album?
Yes, great hard rock drumming from Simon on that album. I love the drum mix on that LP!
And my favourite Judas Priest album, Sin After Sin.
Yes and it's a brilliant album!!
Yes he did
Simon come back to toto
...can't, Jeff's wife destroyed toto
cheating, I know..but what musician made him nervous?
Jan Hammer!!! 😊
Bodisatva Toto Live in Japan.
Sasquatch camel. !!!
Super! Thanks!
Now I know the "strange story" about *Protocol (1)*!
I bought it in 1988, when it was "released"!
I ordered it by a drummers-magazine, and it was delivered to me by "physical mail"!
The quality of this (c.d.!) music and production are very high, even in "modern day standards"!
✌️🤠💥🌟💢❤️🌀🌐👈👍
@#rolfdejonge@
Simon is an A+-class-human being way beyond his drumming/writing/arranging-talents. And great interview!
Simon is a solid guy. I met him after a Toto show in Arizona back in 2001(?) And he was so personable, funny and gracious and we talked about some recorded shows I had seen of them and he was very curious how I got a hold of them (Pre-UA-cam era) and also discussed how he locks in with Luke during the show and how they make subtle changes based on something either of them do in the moment like a jazz improvisation.
Curious if he will ever be a part of Toto in concert again...
Good story. Worth telling, thanks.
Love his work with Mike Oldfield saw him doing a drum clinic at the Camperwell town hall in Melbourne he played on this snare drum alone showing his technique a brilliant exabitian hope things go well
You only really need to know one fact about Simon Phillips. He was the drummer chosen to replace the late great Jeff Porcaro on the '92 Toto tour. It really is as simple as that. And he was the right choice as well, as heartbreaking as the entire experience must have been for all involved.. He's an absolute class act.
Yeah, when your quest is to replace Porcaro, it’s a pretty limited field, but Simon was up for the challenge.
@@melodymakermark Si was a GREAT choice, but I can throw a LOT of drummers that could have done it, I mean REALLY !!!
Also, apparently the only drummer they considered.
I first saw Simon live with Stanley Clarke. Amazing. Been flowing him ever since. Amazing drummer and amazing teacher❤
That was an apt typo. He does flow.
Around 1979, I saw Simon play for Jeff, the drum solo for Scatterbrain was exhausting to watch, very powerful performance, Simon jumped on Jeff's back afterwards and was carried off for the encore. Within a year I saw him play for Stanley, great band for that one, including Stanley playing 2 bass guitars at once.
Hi Simon, I remember seing you, Jeff, Stanley and Jan Hammer in Denmark at the Roskildefestival in 1979! It was great!
Cheers
Björn from Sweden
I've been air drumming to Mike Oldfields "Crisis" with Simon for 40 years.
Legends
I love the way he tunes his drums too...which is why i started searching him up on youtube. has some good drum tuning vids.
Simon, if you do put out another batch of the Protocol box set, I will buy one for sure!!
I hope you are doing well, and staying safe during this Pandemic, and I cant wait to see you back out on the road!!👍🥁👍
John Punter produced the first two Sad Cafe albums, and Judie Tzuke's Welcome To The Cruise.. lovely, lovely records
The Bryan Ferry solo albums and 2nd, 3rd and 4th Roxy Music albums. Legendary stuff.
Simon is one of the best players in the world and one clearly can see his professional attitude and nice personality has opened doors to the creation of incredible music. Nice interview.
The Who needed him.
Ohh, I liked the "big band" version of the Who with Simon.
Crazy how the music industry works, artists I'm not interested in I can find literally everywhere, every platform, want it or not, and they make huge amounts of money, and artists I am interested in and their works, like this box set, are so freaking hard to get and the artists can't even make a decent earning out of them.
Everything is backwards.
Love Simon - saw him with Hiromi a couple of years back in Sydney - fabulous. Please ask him about L Shankar.
The first two songs on Rocks, Pebbles and Sand are some of my favourite drums ever recorded.
The first track(3) is even better one of my most played tracks for the last 35+ yrs
Thanks for this! You've turned me onto a Simon Phillips recording I never heard before! Cheers!
Tons of respect for Simon. One of my favorite drummers. Sad to hear it's so tough for him to make money from his releases. Protocol was such a great album too. Kind of sends shivers through me, if SP is having a hard time imagine how tough it is for other musicians trying to make it out there.
Yeah some crazy lady was trying to put a kaibosh on his go fund efforts. But I think he did alright .I was go see him.back in 2017 in Santa Cruz. But he lostt his house in that fire.Plus ,as I said getting crap an unwanted faction.
These are sooo good ... 😁
Not that it is important, but this interview did not give me any impression that a certain musician made Simon nervous. The title does not seem to fit the actual interview. That being said, I appreciate the interview with Simon as he is one of my favorite musicians and has been since the late 1970's.
He said meeting Stanley Clarke made him pretty nervous at first.
My idol! 🥁🥁🥁👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏
801 LIVE
Love his original demo s protocol..but its not available ?
Try oldies.com.
Believing that I could listen to Simon and this interviewer for hours on it I can't get enough of this Simon Phillips changed me as a drummer I was 17 years old until Oklahoma grown up on her and was listening MTV but I was way into back and no one else was you know my whole focus was selling everybody on Jeff Beck and on time signatures while I was listening to loverboy but Simon Phillips I mean what a player song with the who some just you know just amazing and just crazy and thank you so much for this really melod
“Incredible engineer. Can’t remember anything he’s done but I know you’ve heard his work” . Lol
Wishing him back with TOTO 🙏🏻
A Gentleman....Period!
C.A.😊
Top 5-6 drummers!
Very cool stories!
How did he lose his house?
