About 10 years ago at NAMM I went across the street to a little pizza place, ordered up a slice and sat down. Leland comes in right after me, asks if the seat next to mine is open. Uh, yeah, it's open! Spent about 45 minutes having the best time talking (and mostly listening to his great stories). I'll never forget it. He's exactly like he comes across here. A real gentleman and as we know, an extraordinary talent. Legend indeed!
You lucky dog! Always liked him so down to earth and so much talent genesis had the best working chemistry of any band I’ve listened to they were all perfect together.
✊ l second that. Met Leland at the music tent in Massachusetts…instant friend, beautiful guy. Then we went in to meet Lyle Lovett and the first thing I said was “Dude…I just met Leland Sklar!” ✌️🕊🌏🙏
I and some friends were front row for Lyle Lovett and Leland comes out and our jaws dropped, then Russ Kunkel comes out and we all just went to heaven. Those two are THE MASTERS ... period.
I knew you'd repeat that joke as a lead in for this reprise! Rick laughing at his joke about the drummer tuning the drums down, Lee says "....I'm only talking about the musicians...." Rick totally cracks up....love, love, love this!
I so enjoyed discovering Leland’s UA-cam vids back in the pandemic. I’d heard of him years……decades……before. But through those vids I realized what a wonderful human being he happens to be.
Mark & Brian shoutout! Those Christmas episodes were MAJOR events. Crazy stars, artists, celebrities not just stopping by, but really performing. I would not have known who Lee was back then, but it's pretty awesome now to virtually know him and think back to those shows. "Of of COURSE it was Lee on bass!"
I could listen to Lee's stories all day. Such a gifted storyteller with a lifetime of material given the people he has worked with. Love his channel too.
Nobody- repeat NOBODY had the pocket & held the tempo like Jeff Porcaro! Truly gifted AND worked his ass off, and still made time to teach and share what he knew! He didn't die- heaven needed a great drummer ❤ RIP
I wholeheartedly agree. Jeff had a feel, and a touch that was in his DNA. You simply can’t teach something like that. He’s always been my favorite drummer and sometimes it’s still unbelievable that he’s not here with us. At least he left an incredible legacy of music behind. 😢
Have you checked out his own YT channel? It's full of gems. Episode after episode of him to taking a track he's played on, talking about who was on it etc - and then playing along.
@@Wileylikethehawkevery time I talk about his music people say never heard of him I say oooh I’m pretty sure you have!🤣 then I rattle off some of his work and they all say oooooh him!😂
Cool video Rick. Has seen the long version and this was a treat. Lee is so easy to listen to. Love his stories. At the moment he is in Europe on holiday. Greetings Rick.
OK, great heavily arranged song! Live show in 5 minutes OKAY EVERYONE DOWN A STEP - wait MAKE THAT A STEP AND A HALF 😃 This is why we have so much respect for Leland and other awesome backing musicians like him.
Something so important that Leland points out here, is just to UNDERSTAND the difference in expertise. Mostly how well people are talented at those differences! A lot of times people make you feel like you have to perfect at all of it. Which doesn't even make sense from the amount of it. Coming up with something new and refreshing just takes completely different skills than having to change the way you're playing 5 minutes before going live.
Leland is the professional’s professional. After first watching “The Wrecking Crew” documentary , I have learned to really appreciate studio musicians. I actuality, a great studio musician is first a musician, second an arranger, and third a writer/composer. I’ve always thought of them as engineers. Someone gives them an idea and they make it work. This was a great episode, thank you.
Yes. These session musos should get the lions share of the royalties if they create a hit song, not the guy out front who just came up with some simple chords and melodies.
One of the great bass playing session musicians and live musicians. So many albums I've had with him and Waddy Watchel and Russ Kunkel. Leland is truly one of the foundations of so much music of the last 30-40 years. Wow!
All of your interviews are truly captivating and quite the learning experience. At the same time you are a blessing. Please keep doing what you’re doing and thank you.
2:48 - Mr. Sklar speaks about being ready for anything and how invigorating it can be. I’ve found this at local jams around ATL. You never know who you’ll be matched up with so makes you listen! Musically speaking…
This was a great interview, Rick ! I’m a big fan of Lee’s work and the stories are great. Didn’t even scratch the surface either. Love what you do , Rick - Thanks much !
I was backing up Danny Korchmar once at a festival and Lee was up there playing bass on the other side of the stage full of people. He probably didn’t even see me, but I still consider it a musical career highlight. What a cool guy he is!
Studio musicians offer so much more than players in an established band. They read, are versed in a variety of styles, deliver the goods in a timely manner, etc.
Wonderful !👏😄 What a beautiful musical life 🤷🏻♂️ I’m sure it was every bit as much a pleasure for the drummers he so admired to have played with him -🥂 A gentleman & very fine musician -
It's so important to record music history. Love this.. I also love the Hammond M3 or similar with the Leslie speaker system behind him. That outrageous retro sound cannot be duplicated by digital means
Two of my most favorite people in the world just chatting away and I get to sit here at home and listen in. Ain't technology great? How can you beat it?! Lee, if you ever had time to write a book, you could write something the size of War and Peace with all your fascinating stories. God I would love to read that.
It It hard to fill that bag... But Nathan east (Studio) AND geddy lee AND Chris squire AND John Wetton too This guy Is so musical!!!! So sad to step in TOTO on such Situation
Have similar experiences with 'church music'! We instrumentalists show up with no idea what the music is going to be for that service; or if it's going to be played in the written key. The music itself (the contemporary stuff) is usually written by amateurs for organ and crudely adapted for guitar; so we usually have to do some editing to make it work. All-in-all; it's great training for band work!
I love this and the other channel. We share the same view about modern music and its lack of heart, rhythm and content produced naturally by truly talented artists.
Such a wonderful conversation with a master of the BASS! THere are so many inflated egos in pro music but Lee is so competent he isn't threatened..... Lee would have been a fabulous teacher!
Rick: would you tune down the drums too? Lee: Rick, I thought we were just talking about the musicians. What a great line. And I guarantee that there isn't a drummer that hes ever worked with that wouldnt crack up at that line. I love Lee Sklar
I saw a rerun of a tv show The Incurable Collector hosted by John Larroquette the other day. Lee Sklar and his wife were featured. They collect EVERYTHING and display it all in their home. From pink elephants to Santas to mechanical Mr. Peanuts. Fun show and Lee is seriously into kitsch.

This story about transposing all songs just before the gig was truly impressive.
Only special kind of musicians is able to do that. Amazing!
