A sneak peek of Sylvia Massy's 'Recording A Band' series in which she experiments with inserting household objects such as pickles and lightbulbs into the signal chain.
Join us at The Village studios for a masterclass in creative recording techniques with engineer Sylvia Massy! Hosted at Studio A with rock band The Melvins, this in-depth series takes you on the journey from equipment choice and microphone placement to tracking, production, and the rough mix. Using a Neve 8048 console and outboard compression, Massy explains her signal flow and session setup, discusses the source material, and crafts her sound for drums, bass, guitar, strings, and vocals. She records live performances of the band, adds overdubs, and implements a few unconventional ideas of her own to culminate in an exciting rough mix of the song!

He really has the look of someone that plays guitar through a pickle
Totally lol
He looks like he may even play his pickle through a guitar as well
Couldn’t be more true. Thanks for the laugh I needed
He could probably use his pickle as a guitar and still sound good. Buuuzzz
😂
Sylvia is just amazing. We should all try to be the Positive Pickle.
The 52 downvoters on this video are negative pickles.
You have to put all the energy into the 🥒 pickels.
What is the best pickle for a warm analog-pickle sound? Also I don't have much money so I'm looking for a good dill.
I once used a poop to conduct speaker current. But it sounded bad. One could say that it sounded like... Uhhhh not good. What's the word I'm looking for.....hmmmm
Thank you
People obsess over Mogami cables and stuff. Sylvia runs her audio through pickles and sounds better than most waw
That’s the magic of a good ear, experience and a measure of creative genius
@@alexe8375 indeed
Why not both? I'd run Mogami cables into a pickle, but I wouldn't trust any lesser quality cable, because it wouldn't resist the corrosion :P
Meanwhile, we're all debating what interface is better than the other and what pre amp this and that.
Pretty sure even Sylvia still records her clean lead vocals through her best and most full range equipment. All of this weird stuff is for vibe when you need it.
@@thebetterspidey6115 of course. Not the point of my comment, though. I guess I was trying to use the comment as an opportunity to shine light on how "focus geared" we are now days. That's all.
I'm sure 99% of her work is done in a very traditional and of course (in her case) high budget signal chain.
@@thebetterspidey6115 Actually she often said she'd record vocals on SM57 through anything lying around. She loves API and Neve preamps though.
@@Charlyfromthenuclearcity yep for vocals she’d do 2 versions of takes, one hd and one mangled
HahahhHh so true!!
When Waves release a digitally modelled pickle we’re all gonna buy it aren’t we?
I'll have to wait for a waves "sale". 😂
Unfortunately, it will be the CLA-Pickle plugin.
@@jamesdegrandis So you're saying it will be CPU heavy, huh? 😏
@@marc_leblanc Maybe we need a "Smokin' Sylvia's Pickle Plugin"... Um... That sounds dirty... She would like that. ;-)
I heard Slate Digital is going to offer it with the Everything Bundle. 😂.
“Unplug the drill and plug in the pickles” is not a sentence I hear often in the studio.
The mad scientist of recording. What an inspiration
Slyvia Massey always manages to turn these larger-than-life artists into kids in the best way possible.
Funniest shit I've ever seen
..that gives me an idea..
@@petergedd9330 cursed comment
Sylvia is a legend. She spoke to my microphones class recently. Pickle queen
Massive respect to Sylvia, her style in the studio is legendary! Huge fan of the Melvins too 🖤
Sylvia is the mad scientist aunt we all aspire to have in our childhood.
I kid you not, He turned himself into a pickle. It's the funniest shit I've ever seen.
So honoured to have had a guest lecture from her at my university, such an amazing and creative person. I love it!!!
Oh yeah, love the new Marshall "Pickle Rick" signature amp.
I do like how her idea in the event that the pickles start to emit smoke or even flame is, "we should dim the lights in here, so we can see how fucking cool it looks". I love her.
i love how each member of melvins played a part
ugh, typical super producers... when will they understand that not everyone can afford dill pickles
I was a huge Melvins fan in the 90’s. Saw them a few times at Mississippi Nights. They were the loudest band I’d heard at age 17. Wow.
Spent money on a Way Huge pedal years ago when a jar of Klaussen pickles would have been fine. We live; we learn.
Happy to see that I can go gear shopping in the vegetable aisle during these hard times 👏 Surprised Waves hasn't released The Pickle by Abbey Road yet
😂 “yet” - 👆 Not until they get it just right - every nuance. If you close your eyes, you would swear that you were playing through a real [Insert English pickle brand here] dill pickle.
Nice to watch a band such as Melvins like kids making experiments.A good spirit !!! This guys are exemples not only for Kurt Cobain.Respect
i just love Sylvia, always keeping the process creative and fun 🖤 and that solo was liiiiit
I got to meet her in 2019 at Gear Fest. Super awesome lady!
I feel like recording guitar through pickles is probably the most Melvins thing you could do.
Negative Pickles is a legit Melvins' song title.
This is so AWESOME! 🎸🔊
Member that one where Dethklok used water as a recording platform?
So delightfully cool!! Sylvia is magic.
I was in a band back in ‘91 called Negative Pickle.
Double lightbulb solo was badass
Sylvia, what a legend
Suddenly i have the urge to to plug my guitar on anything that conducts, just to see what happens.
You gotta amp it first, otherwise there’s not enough signal out of the guitar to do anything.
@@joshuagavaghan224 DON'T YOU SAAAAYYY.
Engineers trynna guard their secret sauce, meanwhile Sylvia guards her secret pickles
I forget the name but I saw a few weeks ago a fuzz pedal that has a section for you to put liquid in to try all different kinds of stuff for different tone.
Love the book! Recording Unhinged is the title for those interested!
watching the melvins and sylvia massy tracking while blazing a joint. what more can you ask for
The light bulb is a great idea!😁
that fuzz sound is actually brilliant.
Wow Buzz's tone really brightens up through the lightbulb!
This is some surreal shit! Absolutely ridiculous idea lol but really entertaining video
I thought it was a goof then she actually hooked up them pickles
I LOVE THIS 🥰
Negative Pickle was the name of the band I was in back in high school.
Buzz Osborne's face on the picture called me. Sylvia Massy... Pickle. Amazement.
I've never heard the word pickle so much in my life
She’s a mad scientist of sound! I love it. “Kosher, of course”
This was positively kind-blowing.
Pickle Rick really need to check this video out 🙏 creativity has no bound 💎
Sylvia is my favorite!
Beautiful guitar
Thank you
I love how she wills on the fire. Gotta love this lady! Plug in the pickles.
Outrageous tone, through the lightbulb, super goddamn cool!
Life-changer
Negative Pickle - great band name.
POSITIVE PICKLE POWER!!!
Now that pickle-eating dude can sing a low Bb. .... I thought for sure this was a late April Fool’s joke or Sylvia had finally jumped the shark. But no, once again it was real!
She’s the best!!!!
Now this is crazy awesome.
Oh shit...Here comes the Waves Pickler, 29.99 for a limited time!
I'm sold! 😄
When are the long overdue Massy plug ins coming ?
Do you need a particular brand of pickle? I’m based in the UK if it helps
Who doesn't want to play their guitar thru a pickle! Giving Buzz all kinds of ideas for the next Melvins song.
Putting all the energy into the pickles hahahaha 😂
I'm down with the lightbulb tone
light bulb is optical distortion similiar to an optical distortion or diod distortion
Waves to release their new Sylvia Massey Signature Pickle-Tron VST plugin for $39.99. Features switchable pickle types, sizes, etc. But just like every other Waves product, it doesn't sound like actually inserting a pickle as a buffer on your speaker cable.
I had to check this wasn’t published on April 1st
You can just taste the OSHA violations.
This opens up a whole new world of artist endorsement possibilities.
Mix with the master chef
The Melvins!
I like her ideas. It fun for sure.
Was that vocal recorded trough the room mic? I have the feeling that RX was used to bring that sound up. Sad that the distorted kick spills on my right HP. (irony mode off) :D
Studio go boom
who the fuck dislikes smth like this. this is what audio engineers are born for, adding pickles to signal chains
The pickles are cool. But not as cool as that Travis Bean. He and Mark were making them in the mid to later 70's. Very well made guitars, but may guitarists complain that they were just too heavy and the aluminum neck felt kind of cold. So they made some models with some type of black paint so it would feel a little closer to wood. But they still did not catch on. As I understand it, the bank roller went with Kramer.
Sometimes people call me crazy for looking for the right angles (for reflections from the live room)...
I am definetely too sane and need to learn from her :D
Positive pickle: "everybody loves pickles!"
Negative pickle: "i taste like vinegar..."
Lol. We want popcorn in the next video!
I feel so sorry for the output side of the power amp, Heaven only knows what impedance it's looking into.
The pickle is probably low impedance. and the amp looks solid state so anything on the output would be fine.
Don't... she's using old beaten up gear nobody cares about anyway, and I really don't think a pickle is high-impedance lmao
[portlandia IRL]
That's not a recording class is a SCIENCE class 🧬
THIS seems like something from Spinal Tap ..lol this pickle goes to 11
THATS SO COOL ALL THE NIRVANA REFERENCES , WHAT ABOUT AN EVERTUNE BRIDGE
Whoever was late to the studio session has to eat the pickles.
I prefer to let my pickles get old and mouldy first, to get a more vintage sound.
Rick would be rolling in his brine seeing this
I tried playing thru a corned beef and cheese sandwich, and nothig happened until I played the melody of Fiddler on the Roof: I ended up with a Rueben....
how much it costs is 20k$ enough to have that sound? I need it for my demo, do I need Sylvia to come to install everything?? I'm new
Leave it to the bass player to perform voodoo magic on the pickle and freak out when his sound is gone 😂
AHA!
i had to check to see if it was april 1st
I TURNED MYSELF INTO A PICKLE MORTY
Just another day at the office with Silvia Massy
imma wait for the plugin version....
SO THAT'S HOW Olivia Rodrigo MADE her album- Sour
Whatchu talking about Willis?
Was this recorded on the first of April?
Prince certainly had a good eye for talent!
