A sneak peek of Mike Bozzi's 'Mastering Workshop' series in which he explains the techniques he used to master Kendrick Lamar's Grammy-winning song, 'HUMBLE'.
Hosted at Bernie Grundman Mastering, engineer Mike Bozzi introduces you to the specialized facility and its equipment, then gives a synopsis of his professional background, musical influences and mentor Brian Gardener. He discusses the achievement of tasteful loudness in modern mastering, common issues with mixes received, submission advice, mastering single tracks versus albums, sample rate, bit depth, working in dual mono, his monitoring setup, outboard gear and signal path. He proceeds to master three tracks in the style of hip-hop, trap and R&B by artists Kendrick Lamar and SZA. In each case, he critiques the mix, matches overall loudness for comparison and proceeds to master while A-B’ing with the unmastered version. He divulges on precise EQ alterations, de-essing, soft saturation and limiting considerations, and explains why he uses little or no compression or stereo widening. He also comments on streaming platform algorithms and mastering for various formats.

Shoutout Mike Bozzi he's one of the best mastering engineers I was able to meet and work with, literally took one of my songs, and made it punchier, livelier, louder, fuller and got rid of almost all bad frequencies

It's crazy how much of a difference the mastering made. He did such a small amount of little tweaks, but it really made the song feel more "alive." The catch is you gotta know which little tweaks to make, lol. That's where they get you

When your dealing with an artist as big as Kendrick you are competing for chart numbers and Grammys
interfering signals "compete" for space in the mix; if you don't filter and clean up your frequency ranges, the different tracks will clash
@@wtfr1der thats true but thats not what he meant in this case. "competitively loud" here is in terms of the loudness war and how songs are mastered way louder in general nowadays, but also that they're mastered loud bc streaming services apply their own normalisation after uploading
While I prefer a quieter master, and hate the loudness wars, I don't discredit or blame a mastering engineer for conforming. Many studies have been conducted that show people perceive something as higher quality if its louder. So in that sense, it is competitive.
How do people think he’s “boring” that ending about the hours and talking about the industry seemed pretty typical of a passionate lifelong music engineer to me?
Because he isn’t bouncing around like a coked out child. That mindset why they never make it, music is - especially in the final stages - serious as hell

If people don’t really understand what changes mastering gives your music...it’s honestly a lot. Very important as well. Artists need their music listened to, meaning it has to perform or sound good in every situation, example - in your car, at the clubs, in your headphones or in a store. It needs to sound “radio ready” the sound really influences how well the song performs as well

So many artists today don't give a damn about good mix/mastering it's astonishing. So many albums has jarring sound and not for aesthetic but just because they didn't care outside of picking loud instrumental
I feel like the better the mix, the less there is to worry about in mastering and also if you're listening on low end headphones/speakers you're less likely to notice the difference between a fantastic mix and the final master

Mastering engineers are a whole nother breed. The way that carefully applied EQ can bring such great presence to the vocal and stop it hiding behind the piano, especially after the mixdown stage is true talent.

I just picked up DAMN on vinyl and it sounds great. It is bass heavy, but soundstage/imaging are fantastic, and bass can be rolled off a little on my system.
