Learn to draw in 3D is the first step there are lots of examples even with Andrew Loomis Fun with Pencil book he drew a sphere then added planes to create cheeks on the face. You will improve fast with drawing the right perspective and planes as the wire-frame for you're drawing.
Oh shit, I also learned anatomy through house construction! I had to quickly make a home as a template for our village square so I learned how perspective and shapes worked in a blueprint.
Afterwards, I tried drawing and apparently that prior experience legit helped me understand drawing in a 3D plane. It was like a lightbulb that lit up!

Where do you get your reference photos from? Do you use a certain website in particular? I've been practicing figure drawing lately but have been having trouble finding decent references to use
For straight up figure drawing I’d recommend croquis cafe. It’s behind a paywall but totally worth it for the amount of content they provide which includes both photos and videos.

When I tell people they need to stop studying what they eventually want to create and focus on abstract perspective construction they get defensive.
I'm one of the people that thought if I kept referencing my favorite work eventually it would click. I did that for years and it didn't. Eventually I got wise instead of frustrated and studied Scott Robertson's How to Draw and How to Render cover to cover. Changed the way I see everything. I really wasn't learning anything before. Like studying a language without knowing the alphabet.

Isn't it thought.... I wish it didn't have to be! But it's the biggest unlock that we all avoid.
funnily enough for me its the opposite. When I started a few years ago I was told by everyone and their mum to do fundamentals and 3D shapes and now I'm like "Ok when do I start the other stuff" lol@@AnimeCharlie

Shapes? and here i thought it was references, what about a=making armor. Do shapes help that to?
I would say armor is a great way to use shapes. I think you watched my character video. And in that video one of the characters is a samurai and I use shapes to help define his armor.

I like your video, but there's one thing I'd have to disagree with you on, and that's about not being blessed with talent. My brotha, you are most definitely blessed by God with the talent to draw. That's coming from someone who's been drawing since I was 10, and I'm 30 now. I looked at your old drawings, and I could see the talent was there in those pieces. Everything starts as a seed, and you actually took the time to cultivate that seed into the tree that it's growing into now. Not everyone is willing to do that with whatever talent or gift they've been given. So keep going bruh, your videos are very inspiring, and I pray God continues to bless you. 🙏🏾✊🏾
