To join the animation industry is the goal Thank you good sir
Hahahah! I'm absolutely thankful that you found the videos useful! Truly! Now to speak truth, I didn't start off with a digital tablet🙂. I started with a pencil and paper, then I moved to Wacom intuos, then finally I purchased a tablet. However, I would say the item that made the biggest difference, and I may do a video on this at some point.... was charcoal drawings. Charcoal help me with control, rhythm, and flow. Either way, continue on my brother! Because There will be rough days, and good days! But if each day moves you one step closer to your goal than, my friend, that was an excellent day.
@@AnimeCharlieDo you mean charcoal on paper or digital? Thanks for this great video. I have been postponing the anatomy studies too much… I think I have to get into that finally…
You and Ergo Josh with these relaxing voices I'm about to cry- ANyWAy back to my point! I have a love-hate relationship with studying anatomy, -and I was wondering if this would be a video that would help me cheat- but I do have _a_ relationship with anatomy and it definitely helps my drawings so much when it comes to bodies. I can recognize where things ought to be and make adjustments like I never could in middle school. If I really threw myself into it, I know I could be doing a lot better, but I also know my limits. I can only do so much before I burn out and want to switch my hobby to writing again. (I switch back and forth. When I get sick of drawing, I write and when writing makes me mad I draw 🤣) But I always come back and practice anatomy, because even that little bit adds up. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Preciate you!
I hadn't even planned to draw today, but somehow you gave me the drive to practice drawing just to learn how to draw real people. Your tips are so well put and easy to digest, its almost beautiful. These videos are amazing, thank you so much
This is the highest compliment! I know if I watch a video that gets me to pick up my pencil to start drawing then that was a good video. Happy drawing! :)
I know this is an art channel, and a very good one at that, but you make me want to write a novel just so that I can hire you to read the audiobook! Velvety, buttery, smooth with just the right amount of texture. If nothing else, voice work could be a solid plan B for you! Love the art and teaching techniques, too. Just keep doing it all and I think you’re heading for great things!
This is where I’m currently at on the art journey. I’ve been working on learning how to draw realistic portraits, so that I can create the anime/comic book characters I’ve dreamed of. It’s crazy because I was going through the portrait course on Proko and then for fun I tried drawing a Kid Goku and I was struggling!! I was like “what the heck!?” His design is simple and the drawing is not coming out the way I wanted it at all. Haha! It just showed me there are still gaps in my knowledge and I have study proportions and head construction more. Awesome video bro! Thank you for the tips and continued motivation! 🙏🏽
This is the first video I've seen of yours, and you have given me in 6 minutes some of the best advice on drawing faces I have gotten in 6 months. I wanted to use references to not learn the structure and anatomy of the face, but to stylize it. I found myself drawing shit stylized renditions of it and I felt really demotivated. The way you explained this process really got me motivated, and I guess there's no way around learning the anatomy of a face in order to actually be good at it, but that's where the beginning of this video comes in; drawing the structure of the face can drain you out and burn you out. So I'm asking you this, Chuck: How can I make learning anatomy fun? Anything in art, really.
Learning anatomy is still boring, and it’s unfortunate because I could have progressed further if I found it more enjoyable. In the video, I didn’t mention the diverse aspects of drawing. What I mean is there are various ways and skill sets to develop to reach the final result. While studying anatomy is essential, it doesn’t necessarily require a deep understanding. I grasp the basics but primarily focus on shape language and landmarks when drawing faces. I start with the largest shapes, use landmarks for eye, nose, and lip placement, and then proceed to rendering without delving into details like zygomatic arches or nasal bones.... For an easy way to study anatomy, consider spending about an hour each week looking at detailed breakdowns of artists’ face anatomy studies for both stylized and realistic representations. Redraw their anatomy breakdowns, and then examine your favorite artists’ work to understand how they manipulate anatomy to enhance their art. So I to make this long answer much longer lol take short periods to study the fundamentals and quickly apply them to the art style you enjoy. Hope that helps😉
I agree, I started drawing old people/elderly to improve instead of just the same model of gorgeous good-looking people I found on Pinterest. I also go to the park early in the morning to draw. I draw kids, old people, cats, dogs, the family having a picnic, etc., and I feel my art skills are improving.
Your voice is so soothing, and you are so generous with the knowledge you share. Thank you for what you do! I come from a photography background, with a particular interest in portraiture and capturing expressionless faces, as a commentary on the ambiguity of our emotions. Naturally, I'm very interested in your criticism towards using these sorts of photos as references for drawing. In the same argument, you also mention the concept of retouching, which is frequently lumped into the same conversation as beauty standards. At risk of looking like a fool, I feel as though it's important to stand my ground, and to educate others on why I believe that retouching is perfectly ethical (when done the right way), and a necessary skill for portrait photographers to learn. Ironically, I think your point about using gesture and line variation to create "focus" is the perfect comparison. Photographers use retouching to create 'focus' by removing distractions and emphasizing other areas in the same image. Retouching is typically used to make the subject appear more natural. It might seem counterintuitive to digitally alter someone's appearance to achieve this, but it essentially follows the same principle as you have explained in your video. I was excited by this realization and just wanted to share! I wish that this wasn't such a taboo conversation, but I completely understand the difficulty and severity behind it.
I started drawing humanoids in about May. I've always been a huge fan of drawing animals, but I found humans so mind-numbingly boring that I never even looked into them. Well, of course, I suddenly obtained Star Wars, World of Warcraft, and Marvel obsessions, and I was desperate to draw fanart of at least one. Today I finally, finally, FINALLY drew some fanart that I don't actually hate that much! I have NOT been advancing very quickly, cause I wasn't taking it too seriously until January 1st, cause my new years resolution was to improve. Working for the past 6 days on at least one bust a day has helped me so much, but suddenly this video popped up in my recommended and, lemme tell you, this may be one of THE most helpful videos. It's perhaps not as in-depth or informative, but it's so personal! The experiences feel so real, which means that as you talk, I can TELL what you're talking about in your drawings, you know? My humans always come out looking to canine or feline, so that's really my issue. Over the past year or two, I've been constantly complimented on my expressions, but when I draw humans, I've been putting animal touches in their expressions, as if they're werewolves or something, which isn't always what I'm going for. Like, if a character is annoyed, I'll put lines on their faces as if they're snarling, even if they're not. It's very odd, but I think I'm improving in that aspect. Anyways, I'm subscribed!!! Can't wait for more videos
Love these tips! I've been noticing my bodies have been getting better but my faces have not kept pace so this has come along at the right time. Definitely going to put these tips into action and focus on faces for a while. I also noticed the limits of Pintrest references and I do have a couple of books on expressions so I will go back to those for some help too.
Most of us started our journey by wanting to draw or favorite characters (anime,dc,marvel, etc) and not as a way of expression or skill leveling. Thing is, once you get serious about learning how to draw and start to learn the foundations, basic structures, anatomy and perspective, light, color and composition, you will start to forget about wanting to draw your favorite characters. It should grow stronger on you to just keep drawing to improve your skills to be able to manipulate what comes from your mind into the paper or screen. Once you learn to manipulate what comes out of your imagination into paper as close as you want using those skills you learned along the way, then is when you are no more that fan wanting to draw your favorite characters, but a skilled craftsman doing what can be reproduced on paper by the limits of your imagination. Drawing will become a part of what you are. Or at last it should be that way X)
Totally thought about this today! Let me ask you a question what would you want to see? Gesture Drawing, anatomy, face structure, dynamic poses? Really thinking about this now lol!
@@AnimeCharlie personally I would love to see you keep catering to lane you are in now, beginner then moving into advanced techniques for anime & comic art. I would also love to see a rough sketch to clean line art video in the future as well. i think we all just wanna hear you talk and explain how your brain sees the art and progress. Thanks for listening.

I also started drawing a few weeks ago and asked myself the same question! I decided on the following approach: the basic rules of proportion are important, e.g. using the Loomis method! I can also generally recommend Michael Hampton. Now to my way of learning how to draw faces. Recognize your weaknesses: I have less trouble drawing one eye, but two eyes in the right proportion (distance and height) so I focus on drawing ONLY pairs of eyes for a while. Same with lips and nose! What I'm getting at: focus only on the eyes for two weeks, for example. Or two weeks only lips, two weeks only forearm and so on. Learn the letters before you write! First of all, I would only draw heads in different positions, without faces, to create a basis. A little tip: Marc Brunet has a video explaining an annual plan to help you progress quickly. And sorry for the long text, I hope it makes sense
