A little over a year ago I took an online course that drastically changed how I viewed drawing. In today's video, I am taking a look at how beginners should try this unique approach to looking at drawing fundamentals.

I’ve been doing art my entire life, and I’ve never thought about this way of thinking. Of course I was well aware of putting these ideas together to create a piece, but the way you use music as a better way of understanding how to create art is absolutely incredible. Dude you’re amazing.
My father is a musician he is the one who got me into art and music, he told me that art and music is an melody that goes great together, as art is like a musical tune in the work of a painting breaking it down into a single note of each part in it's base.
So finally seeing the music theory play apart in art makes me really happy, i been needing to improve my anatomy just haven't gotten around to it.
I am new to your channel and I have been drawing since I was 10, I’m almost 35. I have taught myself a lot, I have taken many, many classes and am a decent artist in my personal opinion, however, there is still a lot of learning in my future. I have never had anyone teach the way you do in your videos. They are informative and interesting and make soooo much sense. I am grateful to everyone that has taught me and I have learned a lot but I wish I had someone like you teaching me when I was growing up because the way you explain things and show things creates these connections in my brain that as someone whose been drawing for almost 25 years I NEVER put together myself and it was only after you pointed them out that the lightbulb turned on. Thank you for inspiring artists new and old. You’re incredible.

"This is golden" and "I'm ecstatic" aren't common phrases, so for Gen A to say them seems uncanny.

I've been trying to teach myself to draw for years, between school, work, friends, and life in general I never really progressed but your advice really spoke to me and I felt that just keeping what you said in mind really helped me progress!

Im in the... first baby steps of this layering-formula process, and have been for maybe a year or two now, and I didn't realize that's what it was. The pieces were there but I didn't know they went to the same puzzle. I've needed this advice for quite a while now. It feels kinda obvious once it's spelled out, but I know it's not actually that simple or we both would have figured it out a long time ago, hehe. I feel like I can finally move forward with my art now though, so thank you so much for making this video.
You put into words what I discovered about a year ago. At the time I was looking to break out towards professional art. But I found my figures looked stiff. So I started looking for "the way" to do it. I used Mike Mattesi's FORCE method. But then it all looked like jello people. Then I learned the contemporary envelope method, where you "cut out" the form like unwrapping an envelope. But then it looked too stiff again. Then I went back to basic construction. Thought maybe that's what's lacking. Nah, same problem.
And finally, after trying different methods that were meant to be "the one", I came to the conclusion I really just need to use all of them to actually get a complete and satisfying figure drawing. Start off by finding the location of the figure on the canvas with the envelope, draw out the gesture lines to get the energy in there, then construct ontop of it, whilst exaggerating where you need to to add more dynamism and that's where style itself comes from.
And you can do all of this in any order. Hell, you don't even need to follow my structure or anyone's structure for that matter. What's important is that you don't pigeonhole yourself into thinking one technique is better than the rest. They all come together to make a whole. And if there's anything anyone takes away from this comment, it's: Don't think of gesture and construction as individual things that are incompatible. You need both. You can add any manner of set dressing on them. But those two are integral towards making a figure that both makes sense and looks alive!

Okay this earned my sub and like right off, hearing it explained like that makes it more palletable and even gives you the hope that with some little practice(lots of observation) you can get characters going far sooner than otherwise. I dabbled in guitar, and sax as a kid, learned to read music and all that. Self taught art with some encouragement from 2 grandmothers, one an artist, the other not(except for cooking, love that home cooked older style) but really nothing but that. Stopped off and on with years inbetween times I do, now I'm looking at finally hunkering down to get serious and finally get going. I learned a good few years ago, that all artists use references and some hid that fact, a few who have done so many drawings(literal thousands) they can do them without reference. So that took time to just get over that part, I have a couple online courses I bought and follow(more to line finer points and how to render, which I admit I have never really gotten down to do) along but not really able to finish because of life. Now I can(no longer a caretaker, and left with the what do I do? problem) and seeing something like this makes sense.
I see -now- having practiced some gesture drawings a couple months ago, and showed someone(they were surprised how quick I picked it up and good they were) that we all have our own rhythm in the process that we draw or paint. Part of me feels that at the core it'll either be the shapes first, or the gesture, which I get some basic shapes anyway and keeping proportions pretty spot on, though I do need to work on the foreshortening more, but that's more towards the shape and rendering. So between 30-90 seconds I can have something right off the bat that if the pose(after a series of these which double almost as thumbnails) feels good. I can start blocking shapes and perspectives down for more concrete with any necessary foreshortening. This followed by anatomy(which probably will be incorporated with shapes to start chipping away the steps, or rather streamlining the process) and finally the costume aspects on top, so everything fits... right. By that point it should be at least okay to good, because I have the "emotions" of the gesture down, and story forming because of the costume, and any other details. The last part is the real rendering where I just sit back, relax and refer to materials, and just zen out because I'm now in the home stretch... and now because of you and typing this wall of text... I feel like I may have actually fixed a good chunk of my own personal mental block problem. The other is the anxiety/energy to start... but that's coming with time. So major kudos!

I had to self teach myself cause i really didn't have internet nor could i afford classes, out of all the stuff i had to learn on my own, i must say this was the most beautiful way of describing it.
