Secular reasoning concerning the Bible is no reasoning at all. True reasoning asks the question: Why would a person spend their lifetime fighting the LORD God their Creator only to be cast into eternal torment with no reprieve possible? To do so is not only unreasonable, but is also complete madness! Insanity of both the mind and spirit.

Your lectures are like attending a graduate school college course. If this were offered only in a classroom, there would be standing room only, and the students who arrived to audit the class would have to fight for space nearest the classroom door, out in the hall. @@MindShift-BrandonBrandon, we all appreciate the modesty, but don't sell yourself short.
Take a million people, put them all in front of a camera, give them a book with a message they want to share, and I believe there would be less than 100 who could hold the attention of an audience for more than a minute.
You're incredibly well spoken and clearly intelligent, which is important, especially for someone who communicates about the falsehoods of the Bible. Even if the appearance of perfect speech fluidity is an illusion brought about by cutting out filler words and empty space in post production, that alone is a huge detail which many content creators could use work on.
My point is, it may partially be the book, but the reader is responsible for really capturing a viewers attention. You do it consistently. It's not just the book!

@@MindShift-Brandon Sir, I'm speaking of the body of your work, not just the posts where you are narrating the text of someone else's book. You're able to educate and entertain at the same time. The book that you're presenting here is a deep dive into overlooked bible nuances that has me shocked. I read that ponderous book (the bible) several times back in the day, and due to my bias, I didn't even "hear" what I was reading. I guess I was skimming and didn't realize it. Every so often I realize just how profoundly *odd* it is that such a large portion of the world builds their lives around cosplaying as an ancient culture that they really, really know *nothing* about. The more I learn about what the culture was actually like and actually valued, the more I realize how misguided it is to apply biblical standards and morals to today's world. The bible isn't about our world. It's a fascinating window to the past and so much is missed when it isn't read as such.
On the topic of longer videos, dude, I could listen to you for three hours straight! I regularly let videos build up and then listen to them one after another while I'm playing games or doing things around the house. Don't ever apologize for making a long video.

If I'm not playing a game, cleaning, or taking care of the pets while his videos play, sometimes I'll put them on while lying down and listen to them like a podcast as I'm resting. Brandon's voice is even and soft, so it works well. Even if I fall asleep mid-video, I'll still replay where I left off so I don't miss the educational message, haha. I'm glad he's diligent with his chapter labeling for that reason.
These Dissecting the Divine videos are one of the most fascinating series. That said, I do like the bouncing of multiple perspectives in the Take Down series, and I always learn something new from it that I maybe haven't heard from other secular creators responding to apologetics. I think they're both valuable and helpful in different ways!

Something I've seen a lot from Christians and heard a little myself is that atheists are just angry at God. It's in a lot of Christian movies too (ie, God's Not Dead). But I know my emotions and what I feel isn't anger, it's disgust. Like I was eating a nice Argentine steak and somewhere, someone snapped their fingers and I realized I was actually eating poop. I'm glad I can see now, and I want my loved ones to also stop eating that poop. That doesn't make me angry, it makes me disgusted and sad for people. If there is any anger it's at the specific abusers who profit from the racket... Does anyone relate with that?

It is really fascinating, I've studied the evolution of religion. Earliest religious activity were forms of animism and shamanism, and those evolved into polytheism with increasingly complex personages, then there were transitional belief systems, monolatrism and henotheism, which still worshiped many gods but with one chief deity, then to monotheism dropping the other gods and having just one supreme personal god. Of course, not all religions took that path, as there's still animism, shamanism and polytheism practiced today.

Hi Brandon! I absolutely love this series on the Anatomy of God.
One subject used over and over by the Abrahamic religions is how terrible women are. Eve is portrayed as responsible for the downfall of Man. Asherah is portrayed as a Goddess of Prostitution, Mary Madeline degraded by the Church as a prostitute. According to the Gnostics, Mary Madeline was the "disciple that Jesus loved". The wedding at Cana was Jesus' wedding to her.
But the Church could not have that. The Jesus they created had to be above mortal needs and temptations and so this becomes the reason that Church Fathers must remain celibate. Sex at the root becomes something immoral. Evan Paul commented on this.

It's easy when this is the only worldview you've ever been presented, indoctrinated by your family, parents, peers, and figures of authority, and conveniently skip over things like this. When you say "God is love personified" enough times, these things don't break the conditioning. The more baffling question is how is this ok in a society that not only gives women rights but also values them. It's like being a freed slave but still believing in a deity that would outright enslave you. Oh wait...
How this isn't illegal remains a mystery to me.

Along the path of my discovery, I studied some Gnosticism so I have some knowledge of ideas that stand outside of conventional Christianity. Having grown up in a Christian household and reading portions of the Bible as bedtime stories (mostly through children's bibles), there was a lot that I never learned was in the book. It wasn't until undergrad that I was removed from that culture to figure out my own way. I struggled to hold onto my faith, but reading through the Bible and getting to the laws was when I really saw how much women were treated as less than. It wasn't the final straw but it was one of those points I recall as a major chip in the foundation. Having mostly recovered from my religious trauma (took about a decade), it's fascinating for me to learn about the religion I grew up in with secular eyes. And, I have to add. I find studying with you brings such enlightenment. You are not afraid to bring the truth into what you share despite the controversy or the taboo. And then you add your own thoughts and beliefs, both past and present, into the mix. I never find you judgmental or condemning in your presentations. And you do a great job of separating what you teach from your personal beliefs. Not always easy to do, but you do a great job. I have learned a lot from you. And you have pushed me to learn more on my own. I have studied religion and the Bible since I was 12 years old, and I will probably continue until I no longer walk this earth in this lifetime. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Some of that imagery is truly horrific.
Though I find myself struggling a bit with getting back to what it all means.
Metaphors and euphemisms about relationships between Gods and nations, is getting into some murky and complicated territory.
There is only so far that metaphors can take us, before guesses and assumptions set in.
I am a rather literal minded person. So I appreciate it when information is presented clearly and in a way that doesn't invite countless variant interpretations.
Don't get me wrong, poetry and mythology have their values and places, but I don't like to mix those up with works of say, history, or law.
And when we get believers wanting to claim that book inerrant (by whatever definition), the mix is just that much messier.

Brandon, just some thoughts for thumbnails - yours are terrific and the art is impressive but if there’s any way you can add your face to them that generally draws people in even more. I think you generally have enough space to include your art, a little title, and your face. Might be worth testing at some point to see if it gets more views
Also on framing your videos, my personal opinion is you’re a bit far away. I know you have such a fantastic studio space/art but the proportions which genetically modified skeptic and Alex O’Connor have are basically perfect. Their face on one side, their studio on the other, with graphics covering their studio from time to time. In your case I think you could even do both angles, the further out maybe during your intro then zoomed in a bit when getting a little deeper into the material
And I know you’ve put a lot of work into the channel icon/symbol, but I think the art on your wall would actually be a much better type symbol if you ever think of changing. But similar to “the thinking atheist” but a side facing head with like gears or something shifting just fits the whole “mind shift” theme better (awesome name btw)
Just my thoughts having watched this type of content for a long time! All the best to you!

I also think a closer view would be awesome, though personally I find Genetically Modified Skeptic's close-up just a bit too close, I always end up moving my phone further away. I like SciManDan's framing, it's just a bit closer than Brandon's so it feels more personal but not too close to feel uncomfortable, lol

    Two thoughts:
In the New Testament, Jesus tries to soften the blow of Yahweh's relationship with the people of Israel by drawing a metaphor where the former is personified as a shepherd and the latter as lost sheep that the shepherd seeks to return to the fold. The relationship between Yahweh the shepherd and Israel as the lost sheep has been desexualized for, I suppose, G-rated sensibilities.
The second thing I wanted to bring up is a religious text from Sumerian culture which was translated by Diane Wolkstein and Samuel Noah Kramer as "The Courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi." In this text, there is a portrayal of goddess and demigod engaged in an equal and playful courtship that leads to their wedded and sexual union. There is no violence or possessiveness between the two. The climax of The Courtship reads:
"Sweet is the sleep of hand to hand.
Sweeter still the sleep of heart to heart."
Bear in mind that the relationship between Inanna and Dumuzi (Dumuzid) becomes quite dysfunctional in later texts, such as "Inanna's Descent into the Underworld." Yet the courtship arc is devoid of metaphors for rape and enslavement. Rather it has metaphors for fertility (ripened lettuce and churned butter) as well as Inanna's explicitly bawdy references to her vulva.
Those are my two cents. Cheers, Brandon! Cheers to the other subscribers!

It seems sex is viewed by god as a necessary evil. The fact that men need women to fulfill this seems to make gods and many men angry. Taking this anger out on the women by denigrating them are the results. “I need you, come here” -vs- “I hate you go away.” My brother/pastor and most men of my generation do not see this in the Bible. Younger men, like you, pick right up on it. Thank you!

Obviously it's for your own good. Don't want divine r8p then hide all skin so angels think you are a boy. It's so gross that this is still a thing and people apologize for this disgusting behavior.

On Genesis 4:1, does the author talk about the first part where the translations say Adam had sex with Eve?

Since Adam was both male (Zakar) and female (Nekebah) perhaps he made himself pregnant. Sarah, the "wife" of Abraham was also double-sexed.

I always think of Sheldon dramatically saying, "I have the sword of Asherah!"

The sword is male, same and as pole, pillar, upright stone, stick, club, etc.
Think not that I have brought peace (female red thing) but the sword (male red thing).

I wonder if Asherah is the same Asherah in the praise song at the end of The Prince of Egypt? I haven't finished the video yet so apologies if this is answered
