Damnation is the heaviest clean album I’ve ever heard. It’s so dark and moody. I only listen to it in the late autumn/winter.

Check out Opeth's "Burden." One of the most emotional keyboard solos I've ever heard. It's a very emotional song, like this one. I think you'd like it.

Opeth - The Moor!!! It is the opening song of their concept album "Still Life" which is one of their most highly rated albums.
I think you'd absolutely _looove_ Opeth's "Damnation" album: Clean guitars, lots of mellotron, jazzy chord-changes, clean vocals, and to top it off, produced by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree!
Damnation is insanely good. I listen to it when I can't sleep. Puts me right out.

The ragtime inspired pad that starts almost 3/4 in drove me crazy in a good way, I usual rewind the song just to listen to it multiple times.
The lotus eater was my first ever Opeth song! Still one of my favourites
I never seemed to like / understand "The Lotus Eater". Actually the whole Watershed album is a mixed bag for me. No wonder it was their last heavy album. I love Burden though.

FYI, Both Opeth albums, Damnation and Deliverance, as well as Black Water Park were produced by Steven Wilson. Steven Wilson and Michael Akerfeldt also went on to do a duet, the album was called Storm Corrosion.

This is such an incredible song by Opeth. My only issue is that it could have been longer. I have so much respect for bands that put a killer song as the last track on an album. Thanks for reacting to this song.

If you want to continue with Opeth I would recommend either Burden or Faith in Others. Both are terrific.

If you like this, check out Opeth - Windowpane. The whole Damnation album is mellow, dark prog rock (mixed, engineered, produced by Steven Wilson, who also played all keys/mellotron on it). 'To Bid You Farewell' is also an outstanding melodic track from the earlier years (1996). Then there is the absolute masterpiece from this album, Ghost of Perdition.
Windowpane is my favorite song of Opeth. Master's Apprentice is another favorite but *quite* different

I had tickets to the first show to get cancelled last year. I've seen them a bunch, but I'm still bummed that show got cancelled minutes before the doors opened.
@@SurfGreenTelecaster i saw them on halloween one year. there was a guy in a chicken suit. mikael called him up on stage and he was a little reluctant at first so mikael said, "come on, up. what's the matter? you chicken? do i have to egg you on?" it was great. then the chicken did a stage dive and accidentally unplugged mikael's guitar, so when they started the next song mikael was unplugged. they stopped playing, as they realized what had happened, and he said, "you unplugged me. fuck you, chicken!" the entire club was laughing. i've never been to an opeth show and didn't have a fucking blast.
I'd recommend "When" from My Arms, Your Hearse

@@progperljungman8218 Mostly acoustic, like Death Whispered A Lullaby. Most of the songs have clean electric guitars and mellotrons tho. But I still regard it as an acoustic album since it's the main thing.
@@progperljungman8218 No argument here, but if Geebz is trying to find acoustic music to the bands he's been reviewing lately, this is about as close as he will get as far as a complete album of songs to choose from. Unless he isn't looking for studio production quality and simply looking for random acoustic versions online. But honestly, I could be wrong.

Hey man! I would like to give you some information about the context of this song. 'Alright!' ;)
This is the closing song on the Ghost Reveries (2005) record. You mentioned it being kind of like a song that serves as a transition between other songs, which it also could have been, but isn't. This album is, in my opinion, a concept album. The Opeth fanbase is very divided really about it being an actual concept album or not.
I would like to add that the way the songs are ordered on the album version, is not the way how I listen to this album. The 7th song on the album, 'The Grand Conjuration' (Isolation Years being the 8th and final track), is the second track in the order I listen to this album, as it portrays the protagonist giving his soul and fate to Satan.
I must say that I find Isolation Years a very powerful track to end such an album. With all the heaviness that has happened during the album, Isolation Years serves as kind of a moment to reflect upon the story and what has been going on on Ghost Reveries.

Forgot to mention... It would be quite a treat to have your take on Anathema's "Untouchable" part 1 and 2. It is a very emotional and moving song while also showcasing amazing musicianship and song writing.

The chord progression in the chorus is so perfect it seems impossible. I think it goes from a i to a #VII+ (augmented sharp 7).
Lots of unique chord qualities. These things are full of extensions, substitutions, and uncommon voicings.

Those long sustained notes in the chorus are, in fact, not coming from a keyboard or synth, but a guitar, with some assistance from an E-Bow. For those that have never heard of it, the E-Bow is a little device that you hold in your pick hand around the strings, and it uses electromagnetism to vibrate the strings, creating infinite sustain. From what I understand, Steven Wilson was the one that introduced Mikael Åkefeldt to it during the Blackwater Park sessions and he put it on a few songs (most notably The Drapery Falls, Bleak, and the title track.)
Love your videos and de comps. Also stoked on how they aren’t monetized and everything you do is to promote the artist and their music. I would love for you to de comp any of Wintersuns songs from their first album or Sons of Winter and Stars off their second album. Or The Forest that Weeps (Summer) off of their third album. Very progressive melodic death metal that demonstrated true mastering of their instruments. Keep it going love everything about your channel.

I have to say Pluton by Soen. Loads of layers, interesting structure, mix of heavy and mellow similar to Opeth, drumming masterwork of Martin Lopez (ex-Opeth), and some amazing 'London's burning' style overlapping vocal lines on the chorus. Oh and sorry, amazing channel Geebz, aloha!

It is an excellent intermediate between the mellow and the heavy Opeth. A little more "mainstream" for the 'diehard' Opeth fans: but as a huge Opeth fan myself I absolutely love that song.

I really, really like the way you literally dissect the structure of the songs you´re listering to. It´s quite rare in my opinion to watch a reaction video, and actually learn something. Really nice work. Btw - have you heard of Borgnagar before? A Norwegian Band. If not, I´d recommend to listen to the piece "up north" from their latest album, I´d really love to see what you have to say about the structure of that specific song.

As others are recommending tracks from "Damnation" (and a couple from "Still Life"), I will also include one of my fave tracks from "Watershed" . . . "Burden". It's such a gorgeous song and again, beautiful but sad words from master lyricist Mikael Akerfeldt, always very _visual_ lyrics. Much like here with "Isolation Years" (the ending of the album) where I ALWAYS have the visual behind this line:

It's just fun to watch someone become an Opeth fan. Lots of people will recommend you all their old stuff, but their last 3 albums have been really cool too, in particular I recommend 'Moon Above, Sun Below', River, and Spring MCMLXXIV.

My first exposure to Opeth was at Download Festival 2017. The song was Sorceress, and I was hooked. Really cool vibe, heavy and dark elements, intertwined with guitars and keys playing in unison. Give it a try!

Another great song, from a great album, by a great band. I've been hooked on their music for a long time now and love old and new Opeth. The Album that this is from is my favourite, it's got all the things and it felt like it was the culmination of all of their experience, skill, and creativity.

I really think you should listen to the song Deliverance from the album Deliverance, it's an amazing song and the transitions from heavy to softer on it are just mind-blowing. Also if you reacted to something from their album Still Life such as The Moor, or maybe Serenity Painted Death, or something from the album Blackwater Park, say The Leper Affinity, that would be so cool. I would love to see your reactions to those songs.

Mikael Akerfeldt is a spectacular vocalist and guitarist with a extremely wide range of styles he is able to perform competently. The contrast of different styles on Opeth tracks is why they remain a compelling listen even after hearing them for decades. I love watching people encounter their music for the first time.
