Hey man! I would like to give you some information about the context of this song. 'Alright!' ;)
This is the closing song on the Ghost Reveries (2005) record. You mentioned it being kind of like a song that serves as a transition between other songs, which it also could have been, but isn't. This album is, in my opinion, a concept album. The Opeth fanbase is very divided really about it being an actual concept album or not.
I would like to add that the way the songs are ordered on the album version, is not the way how I listen to this album. The 7th song on the album, 'The Grand Conjuration' (Isolation Years being the 8th and final track), is the second track in the order I listen to this album, as it portrays the protagonist giving his soul and fate to Satan.
I must say that I find Isolation Years a very powerful track to end such an album. With all the heaviness that has happened during the album, Isolation Years serves as kind of a moment to reflect upon the story and what has been going on on Ghost Reveries.
If you would like to know my order of listening to Ghost Reveries and the context behind it, I would love to share it to you! Thanks for reacting to this beautiful song and to all of the other music, I think you're doing a very great job! Thank you for making my day with this reaction Geebz, keep it going!!

Those long sustained notes in the chorus are, in fact, not coming from a keyboard or synth, but a guitar, with some assistance from an E-Bow. For those that have never heard of it, the E-Bow is a little device that you hold in your pick hand around the strings, and it uses electromagnetism to vibrate the strings, creating infinite sustain. From what I understand, Steven Wilson was the one that introduced Mikael Åkefeldt to it during the Blackwater Park sessions and he put it on a few songs (most notably The Drapery Falls, Bleak, and the title track.)

By the way, the tuning for this song is a peculiar one. In that album (Ghost Reveries), a couple songs are in DADFAE. This one I ain’t sure, some say DADFAE, some say DADFAD. I know for sure 3 of the heavy songs are in DADFAE.
Anyway, that’s probably why you found the chord picking unique. Very cool tuning.
Keep making Opeth analysis videos !

I am loving the channel and your wonderful insights. Opeth are just amazing. Godhead’s Lament is one of my favourite songs. Heavy, dynamic, catchy and just intriguing 😍 I am also not surprised you also seem to be fascinated by Tool and Devin Townsend. All of them rule!

If you want Opeth's softer side on its own anything from Damnation is amazing. The album is the soundtrack of a particular mood.
Opeth's ability to seamlessly transition between heavy and light and dark is what sets them apart. To that end I'd recommend Bleak or The Drapery Falls for songs that best capture their ability to blend moods and intensities together.

PLEASE react to Burden - Opeth
It is an excellent intermediate between the mellow and the heavy Opeth. A little more "mainstream" for the 'diehard' Opeth fans: but as a huge Opeth fan myself I absolutely love that song.
    Excellent decomposing!

Love your videos and de comps. Also stoked on how they aren’t monetized and everything you do is to promote the artist and their music. I would love for you to de comp any of Wintersuns songs from their first album or Sons of Winter and Stars off their second album. Or The Forest that Weeps (Summer) off of their third album. Very progressive melodic death metal that demonstrated true mastering of their instruments. Keep it going love everything about your channel.

I just came from watching your reaction to Where Owls Know My Name and left a lengthy comment there, but in case you don't see it, I just wanted to comment on this video as well hahah! Hopefully you can go back and read it, that would be awesome.
But like you were saying in that video about how one of your viewers kept pestering you on Rivers of Nihil, maybe I got to do that too.. 😅 Hahah
But really, it would absolutely make my day if you reacted to some older Opeth (not that much older)
I left a few recommendations on that video but I just wanted to post them here as well, because this is a video about Opeth after all hahah.
I really think you should listen to the song Deliverance from the album Deliverance, it's an amazing song and the transitions from heavy to softer on it are just mind-blowing. Also if you reacted to something from their album Still Life such as The Moor, or maybe Serenity Painted Death, or something from the album Blackwater Park, say The Leper Affinity, that would be so cool. I would love to see your reactions to those songs.
I'll probably end up recommending some other bands in the future, but I'm sure your getting absolutely swamped by requests.
Again, cheers from Canada my man! Have a good one!

Check out Coil from Opeth's Watershed album. It is another song like this that should fit your concept. It is basically an acoustic song with synths as recorded, but there is also a live version that was done on a Swedish morning TV show. It's a short song by Opeth standards, but it is still about 3 minutes long. Plus it leads into one of their heaviest songs for your ebb and flow discussion.
On a separate Opeth note, they use a specific model of PRS guitars that has piezo pickups built into the bridge so they can easily play acoustic parts with the proper sound without having to resort to things like special stands or switching guitars. Also makes it easier for touring.

It is very common to have short mellow songs in the middle of metal albums! The concept of listening to albums the whole way through is still common in rock and metal these days (I find), so these sort of softer songs fit into the albums nicely
