I was horrified at Squidmar building that metal relic. Building a rarest of rare models on some kind of time deadline, not cool. But that's me. He had the model and it looks like it came out pretty good. So, yea, Leakycheese would had made it a masterpiece

AWESOME!!!!!! I've always wanted to put one of these together. I've done titans, so many knights, tons of super heavies but i've never done a Thunderhawk or a StormBird.... so peanut butter and jealous ;) Soh's eh.... Heresy or 40k BL? Very neat watch, loved the stress test and the Flight test.
Thanks mate :) It's important that these war-machines go into to battle ready for any challenge! Having done a few Forge World flyers now I think they are the probably the most difficult builds. Big titans and tanks pose a challenge for sure, but the flyers take the most thinking through to design the strengthening elements.

Jesting aside when I said dropped I should have qualified what was meant more. The mounting block was designed to survive a drop of around 6-inches as might happen if grip was lost when moving it about the gaming board. It would be able to survive that.

I can never get comfortable with drilling resin with power tools. Doing the magnet holes on my warlord was the worst because of the size of bits. But that pin stress test at the end put the fear in me haha.
True fact: the Thunderspin has been turned into a .gif and immortalised on the interwebs! Many people have been terrified by that test on Twitter... I think Nikki Sullivan is permanently traumatised 😂 I still get palpitations thinking about magnetising my Warlord arm weapons. It's the finest work of that type I've ever done but by jove it was hard!

Lock S foils to Attack position!! re: cantilevering, I've done that on a few models, and i've had issues with it staying properly attached (like for instance, making an axle, and the wheels seemed to like to come off) - any advice on making sure that doesn't happen? Also, curious how you manage to keep it straight through the entire model? Cockpit magnets: Brilliant idea! Magnetising is amazing, esp the death strike missles and the upper wings, love it so much.
Wonderful model, question on the magnets, for the missiles did you have them set up to only go on one way? When I magnitize stuff that is going on and should only go on one way I normally flip the polararity so that if you try and mount it the wrong way it won't allow you too.

Thanks Steven! I used a hand-held pin vice to drill these holes which does work but takes a bit of effort and time to do. On the plus side it's gentle going with lots of opportunity to keep the hole on the correct alignment. You could equally use a cordless electric hand drill as well - much quicker as long as you are careful to drill in on target. Especially so on the landing gear as if you go off-line you might punch through the side of the strut.

Went through this video again now that I’m building my own thunder hawk and one thing that I think you should’ve gone over was the extensive filling work done attaching the wings to the fuselage. There’s some large gaps and I was wondering what you used to fill those in?
I bought one last week, and started assembling it yesterday. On the lower rear fuselage there are chamfers that are supposed to match up with one on the wings, but there is a mismatch in the lengths so the wings cannot sit tight against the body. I'm going to cut and extend the fuselage chamfer, I cannot do anything with the ones on the wings since they're needed for the landing feet wells; has anyone else experienced this problem? Also, it sucks that Forge World have since discontinued all Land Raider doors. I'm going to 3D print some Raven Guard embellishments instead.

Thanks mate :) Okay, I've got a bit more time to think about this now, let me see. I believe I used the following magnet sizes, all Neodymium plated with Nicked. These should be N52 grade: Nose ramp 2x1mm Canopy 3x1mm Missile/pylons 1x1mm Attack wing retaining mounts 1x1mm These can be N35 grade: Attack wings 5x3mm. For these I mounted two sets of magnets per wing. On each mount I used two magnets so that's a total of 8 per side or 16 for the model. Hope this helps!

Isn't the storm bird a bigger flyer? My understanding was that the Stormberg cost about twice as much and weighed about twice as much but the model didn't have as good a detail yet.

This Thunderhawk kit was released in 2017 and cost £450. Current price (September 2024) is £598. According to the Bank of England Inflation Calculator £450 in 2017 is worth £585 today. So given we’ve had a pandemic and a war that caused the collapse of Western European strategic energy policy, I’d say this kit price has tracked inflation very closely.
@@jeffholt9437 Just basic economic analysis. This model is very expensive for sure and I would only to recommend it to people who have the spare cash and are up for a very challenging build project 🙂

Haha, no that's not my line of work, but I've been involved in some big spend work over my career so know a bit about costs. Seems like there won't be much more Forge World to buy if current trends continue, lots of models have been disappearing over the past 3 months. Even the Sokar is showing as sold out online!

So given we’ve had a pandemic and a war that caused the collapse of Western European strategic energy policy, I’d say this kit price has tracked inflation very closely.

@@jeffholt9437 Just basic economic analysis. This model is very expensive for sure and I would only to recommend it to people who have the spare cash and are up for a very challenging build project 🙂

Haha, no that's not my line of work, but I've been involved in some big spend work over my career so know a bit about costs.
Seems like there won't be much more Forge World to buy if current trends continue, lots of models have been disappearing over the past 3 months. Even the Sokar is showing as sold out online!
