    Hello Squidmar, interesting video, some background on the Thunderhawk, it was part as you know of the full chapter project GW did for Games day, (originally conceived by John Stallard) elements of the whole of GW contributed. The Factory assisted by designing the Thunderhawk and Tim was the primary sculptor. We made three originally but they were not intended for general release. However Tom Kirby the then CEO/ General Manager asked us to make it a unique product, wooden box, burnt/ embossed wording etc.
    The Ownership document has a version of my signature as a certificate of authenticity, the model was designed to be built from the inside out, you may have noticed the holes in the internal frames, these have the brass rods passed through to give strength, then the side panels are added and so on. There were at approximately 500 made but I do not know the exact amount as I moved on after founding Forgeworld.
    The Aquila were existing GW badges re-purposed, both for the model and box.
    The internal details were based on Jaguar and F15 details

    Maybe you can use something to stuff the inside of the model, some kind of skeleton, so the weight of the structure is supported by the material inside the model instead of the other metal pieces. He even pointed both out with the statement "I've never seen this with metal minis before" and when they had to add their own supports. Casting errors happen, sure. But thats on the maker, not the consumer, and they have reject bins for a reason. These parts were literally out of spec. And the fact that it broke because it needed additional support was evidence the manufacturer either had no idea what they were doing or didn't care.
      This is definitely a case of "Oh its expensive in a fancy box, it MUST be good". The box was the only thing here I would want. This was trash in a fancy wrapping, and I hope this dude gets enough money off this video to cover the labor cost for three guys for four days.

    If you work with metal and such tiny drills I've found that you really want a little vice for the drill press to keep the object steady. Saves you a ton on drill bits ;).

  • @lceplague
    @lceplague 3 роки тому

    When it comes to pinning, I recommend 1mm pianowire! Will not brake and as it's only 1mm, you can easily use it on the slimmer parts. You just need to be careful with drilling metal as the 1mm drills usually snap easily.
    You can get pianowire in various thickness. I usually use 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 depending on what I'm pinning.
    Hope this helps your future builds!

    My dad used to own a miniature company (Falcon Figures) and he did all the moulding himself. One thing he would tell me that people just DON'T think about is that metal shrinks, expands and warps with heating (melting) and cooling (hardening), which was really common with larger multi part metal miniatures - like the old 40k Krootox, the Lord of the Rings Mounted characters.

    Next time if you drill through something, use underneath something like a piece of wood/something softer than the metal but sturdy enough to hold the part. Thus you reduce the tension on the drill bit, not to mention the parts won't fall apart while you do the drilling.

    Those large, flat (hah! As if!) plates were never given enough internal reinforcements nor post casting cooling time to have any chance of not warping. If anyone thought the original Predator metal turret and sponson parts went together poorly, the Thunderhawk was 100 times worse.

    Jb weld insted of two part epoxy use a Dremel to rough up certain spots on the interior of the panels and add metal rods bent to fit inside and add some folded pieces of brass or copper to work for structural sections. Thats how you build one of these properly and also use a file to carve grooves into metal tod so jb weld will hold better

    Out of curiosity, if it is made out of metal, wouldn't welding be a better way to connect the parts? Then sand it and paint it, and make a custom stand for it with 4 see-trough poles, attached to a big enough flat base (so you can put other minis beneath it) and a custom made acrylic platform that hugs the model so it is safe resting in it?

  • @Fury9er
    @Fury9er 3 роки тому

    I remember when this came out, it was a monster. The only other thunderhawk model in 40k scale was a plan published in a very old Citadel Journal. That white metal might even have still had lead in it from '97, I recall making things like Dreadnoughts and landspeeders it would tarnish a little and that defied a good glue joint. 2 part epoxy usually did the business though.

  • @barryslemmings31
    @barryslemmings31 3 роки тому

    If you cannot pin pieces together easily another way is to use hard wood or plastic to make webs and fillets to fit inside or behind the joints where they cannot be seen. An alternative is fibre glass resin and netting. This is not pretty but if the inside of the model cannot be seen then this approach can work very well. Maximum support, maximum strength.
    Also, if you are drilling white metal you MUST cool the drill very often. Dip the drill bit into cold water every few seconds otherwise the drill and metal will get too hot and will start to melt together. Plenty of cold water!
