at 23:20... the up-counting hundredths are rounded down (013568) for 00-48, to nearest (023578) for 50-97, and it uses 99 instead of 98 so 99:59.99 can appear. when it counts down, it uses 99 minus all of these, so it uses 00, the 124679 times from 02 to 49, and the 134689 times from 51 to 99.
Interestingly, I checked some Whack/Thwack + no KO stage (in VS, with the timer counting down from 7 minutes) footage I have in _Ultimate_ and SKELUX's video on getting 100 KOs in Cruel Smash (with the timer counting up to about 30 minutes), and these quirks with the timer don't happen; the timer will always count 013568 (the way _Melee_ counts time upwards from .00 to .48).
Oh, and also... The hundredths that Melee will display on both up and down counts are 00, 06, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31, 36, 41, 46, 53, 58, 63, 68, 73, 78, 83, 88, 93, and 99, and the ones that it can decide on how many frames they are above .00 are 00 and 99 only (the others represent one frame less when counting down than when counting up).

What strikes me is how FAST the internet and technology moves. Trying to dig up old websites from the early 2000s may as well be like uncovering ancient civilization artifacts. Being excluded from archive.org is like harsh weather or a war destroying those artifacts. Not to mention internet things that are even older, like 90s websites. Searching for 90s internet stuff is kind of like searching for caveman paintings. Great work on this video!

I loved the RNG manipulation section. I remember in Pokemon gen 5, they made RNG manipulation INCREDIBLY easy--something that had to be done at 1/60 second precision in gen 4 was changed to 1-second precision in gen 5. Getting legit pokemon with 5 perfect IVs was fun.
Then later they disabled that but drastically improved the breeding scene. RIP legit perfect legendaries.
afaik u can manip rng in gen 6 and 7, but its not as easy as gen 5 to perform. i dont know about gen 8
@@kepler69c32 You're right, I was working off of 2015-ish info when I said gen 6 RNG manipulation didn't work. Seems like they have fully broken down literally every aspect of RNG manip since then for the 3DS-era games, but it's an order of magnitude more involved than gen 4 or 5 was (gen 4 was hard, but not *complicated*, it was basically just resetting until you hit the right 1/60th of a second)
@@codetaku it truns out that the guys came across with a way to manipulate pokemon gen 8 raids without any CFWed switch (normal not hacked console).
i dont know how they break the walls like this, its like a ton of work finding the game/console routines that handle rng AND do the calculations to reverse seeds with minimal information you can get in-game.
if you're still interested in rng manip/seed reversing, you can definately check out the videos about minecraft pack.png seed reversing, its really impressive (you may not like minecraft, but the science behind this research is truly amazing)

Tbh im not a huge fan of summoning salt. I feel like he glosses over some stuff and doesn't get into the story enough. I don't feel connected to the runs like I do with vids like this one
@@triplebog yeah I could say the same too. This is his only problem I see with him. I remember in the Castlevania video he just describes SBDWolf as a high level cuphead player. I believe he didn't even say that SBD holds wr's in the game.
This is one of the best Melee content pieces ever produced. There is so much information, both historical and technical, and yet the presentation of it all is extremely fluid and well-paced such that it was never overwhelming (I never felt the need to pause or rewind the video once). In an hour long video, it's easy to include some "filler" but everything shown felt relevant, even though I'm sure there was plenty more you *could* have said.
I don't think anybody expects you to ever put this level of investment into anything like this ever again, but if you do, add me to the list of people who eagerly anticipates it.

To be fair, a 10 second world record is a little different than games that are minutes long. Even if he depicted a short one like Super Mario Bros (a little under 5 minutes) that's still a huge chunk of video taken up for it, let alone longer games.

So here I am, half post-new year hangover, I randomly start watching an hour-long video about a game mode I've never really been much involved with from a game I abandoned playing more than ten years ago... and there I unexpectedly show up in the middle of it.
It's been a long time that I haven't been able to keep interest long enough in a Melee video to watch something from beginning to end, I am genuinely amazed at the incredible archeological excavations you did there!
I've completely disconnected from the Melee community since 2009 and I've been wondering for a while now where I could find old and/or new record lists, since all the good old websites I knew back then have disappeared from the face of the internet.
One thing that has never changed though is that the Melee community's dedication keeps amazing me. All. the. time.
If you go to the description of the video and join the smash stadium discord, we would love to have any veterans rejoin the community, even just to talk. We've updated all the record lists and whatnot, and the discord is full of veterans from back in the day (mudi, Mario 64 Master, etc.), some of which are still working on records today.

But it's like research: what gets discovered isn't always the useful part. It's the new ways and new strategies used to discover that particular thing, that are useful and can be applied to solve other problems.
So in the end it's not a waste of time.

Honestly TASs are way more interesting than "legit" speedruns and this video does a great job illustrating why

I get that you're trying to give a compliment but a video being shorter than another video, can only help it's engagement. The longer something is the less engaging it is. Saying that this video is more engaging the starwars despite it being shorter does not make any sense.

@@Prabohong also thought I'd add, that "longer" videos do actually have more engagement than shorter ones do, but only up to a certain point, hence the whole "have to reach 10 minute mark by any means necessary for ad revenue on UA-cam" thing, or at least I'm pretty sure I heard that engagement was one of the reasons for why it was implemented. Idk about videos that extend past the 1 hour mark, but I'd be willing to bet a video still retains decent engagement a good bit past 10 minutes though (obviously depending mostly upon the topic/content)
Im a competitive Smash player, never been personally into speedrunning and I never thought for a second I would ever watch an over hour long video about WR's for Peach's Melee BTT, but here I am having finished the whole thing. All I have to say is great job on this video, you sucked me in and kept me interested for over an hour on a topic I never thought I would even remotely care about, but this was actually really cool. @@fredrickrodriguez2175 99% of videos covering speedrun history copy the music, structure, pacing, tone, etc of Summoning Salt, and were made following the success of his channel. Call of Duty is not that similar to Pong. Very different.
@@leaffinite2001 I would argue the pacing is actually decently different in this run, with how much it references TAS and future stats. Though a lot of that is to do with how tight the category is being a 10s run compared to an hour something run

Thank you for all the time and effort you poured into this, the melee community will never die with people like you creating content like this.
When I saw the time at the beginning I thought "I'm gonna just watch some minutes and left" boy I was wrong. This was incredibly interesting for someone that doesn't even play melee. I can't imagine how much work went into this.

My interest in Melee is very small, and only due to Ultimate/Smash 4 players talking about it. But this? It was incredible. It took a topic I only vaguely knew existed and made me so interested that when you unveiled the times near the end of the video, I was actually shocked. I almost gasped. This production value was insane, and all the research you did was great. And the fact that so many of the names in this video actually showed up and talked to you? Mind boggling.

The research, the story telling, the explaining, how everything was put together, it was all phenomenal. I can’t even imagine the work and time that was put into this video. 45:40 not finished watching the vid yet, but there is no need to test 4.3 billion permutations manually. You could do this trivially in seconds in code. Every range of values generated by the random function will correspond to a certain item pull. assumedly their code looks something like this:

The issue with this is that there are many (hundreds of) random calls between the various pulls, caused by Peach's actions. And the number of calls itself is dependent on the seed, as there can be a variable amount of dust clouds, etc. So the only way to be able to trace the whole path of a seed over a run is to execute the run with the specific starting seed (or, I guess, reverse engineer the whole Melee engine). It's not a trivial solve.
okay I just saw 55:20 where the devs stop using random.Next() based on the seed and do a standard random function based on time. so any set of pulls is hypothetically possible and that other thing is irrelevant. you could get 100 bobombs in a row in that case. in my games I use two different random functions, one seed for core gameplay stuff so runs are consistent, and one for things like random pitching on sounds, dust as you say etc. where it's purely aesthetic and makes no difference to gameplay.
Ah, I see. I suppose I could have clarified this better, but Melee uses random.Next() for both the gameplay and aesthetic rng calls. Going into the stage on the same seed and performing the exact same inputs on the same frame will always result in the same sequence of pulls (and the same dust clouds, etc). So you can get 100 bob-ombs in a row if you manipulate the seed between each pull, but 4 in a row might not be possible if you're pulling back to back frame-perfectly.

One thing I was unclear on is that the frame of inputs makes a difference to the randomness, but I guess that's just a byproduct of the "chaos" of physics and so many untracked particle systems etc. . So yeah, for a frame perfect run you would need a specific optimal seed and I see what you mean by the problem of how calculable it is, you'd have to know exactly how many dust clouds etc. are going to spawn and exactly how many times that RNG function is called. Still maybe calculable for frame perfectness? but obvs frame perfect is so difficult to achieve that it isn't really worth entertaining.

No, I triple checked that. Unidentified person was his tag specifically - I was told the Japanese characters used are the same as in UFO (same "unidentified"). Also, non-logged in users on the forum translated to "anonymous".

I kinda want to say this shouldn't be over an hour long, but I'll be damned if I can pick and choose what to take out to get this video under that coveted 1:00:00 world rec- I mean, total time. Every time you went off on a tangent, I was like, 'come on, ANOTHER one? Just get to the record!" Then halfway through the tangent I was like, "yeah no okay that was on me i needed this info." The only complaint I have is maybe the mic being of okay quality, but honestly, compared the the majority of videos I've seen on this site, it's a minor gripe. Very good video, an hour well spent, liked and subscribed.
Strong pros to this video that I would like to see more of in future videos are the route optimization evolution, theoretical best times, TAS stuff, slowed-down play-by-play breakdowns, and input from the runners themselves. I also like the mentions of questionable records that could not be included, as there is something alluring about the 'maybe they did, maybe they didn't.' All of those things were great additions.
I didn't really care about seeing world-firsts in this video since I don't actually watch speenrunning too much, but I won't discourage more of that in the slightest, It seems to have psyched up a few people in these comments, plus it must have taken a bit of wheeling and dealing, Great work!
