    In this video I show how I gained HP and increased MPG by installing a V6 model fan into a RAM 1500 V8 5.7L HEMI truck. This is a plug and play conversion but will need some programming to the truck to turn on at the most ideal time.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned or not but changing from mechanical to electric fan greatly reduces strain on the water pump bearings so that is another reason to change it.

    I did this to me Dad's 1500 as well before he sold it. Here are the most frequently asked questions... From my point of View:
    1. Save Gas / Fuel Economy = YES... 1-3 MPG
    2. Engine Crank Smoother / Start Faster = YES, Easy too!
    3. Limit Engine / Parts from Wear and Tear = YES
    4. Cut down Engine Heat / Cooler Engine = YES
    5. Get more out of the Alternator gain Amperage = YES, never seen over 14.5V
    6. Gain more Horse Power = YES, Especially if Fan Seized... They said it's about 1-2HP to run Clutch Fan, but if Seized... It's 15-20HP and sound like an Air Plane, LOL !!!
    NOTE: You will NOT REGRET doing this !!!

    Boosted thx for your earlier reply. I did the conversion. The fan fits perfectly. Problems I ran into: #1. Had to extend wire so plug would reach the fan. #2. 2015 and up to present PCMs on Rams are locked and have to be sent out to be unlocked before you can adjust the fan temp. The original preset temp for my truck comes on at 232 degrees if there is a malfunction with the manual clutch fan and your condenser fan needs to "Try" to cool off engine. Cooling fan will always stay on with A/C or defrost being on. Which is no problem for me because one is always on anyway. My gas mileage did improve on the highway 1 to 2 mpg. From 17-18 mpg to 20-21 mpg. Hope this helps someone. I appreciate all the videos. You do a good job.

    Just finished my conversion in 2014 Ram. Old fan (nut) turned out to be the fan from hell. Made a spanner that wasn't strong enough, fabricated a new one in a fork configuration with stainless bolts for strength. Fastened handle to upper inner fender, used a 2' crescent wrench and 6' square tubing as cheater bar. Nut finally broke loose. Rest of install was textbook. It's winter here in CO so will look into a programmer later in spring to set fan turn on. Thank you for showing us this mod.

  • @Beardest_Fishing

    That little green "thing" on the plug is called a thermocouple. There is a set temp that when it reaches that temp it will close loop and turn the fan on. If you mount it in a location that has better access to engine temp (closer to the radiator) you will see a difference in when the fan turns on/off. The more remote of a location and the cooler it stays the less your fan will turn on. Just think of it like a thermostat in your house, if you put it in a closet it will only cool/heat the house when the temp in that closet goes above/below the set temp no matter if the rest of the house is 30 degrees or 120 degrees. So place it where you want it to read the proper temp so it comes on/off at the right time. Sticking it away from the engine or behind something will only cause the fan to turn on when the air in that area reaches the right temp.

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому +1

      xckrebel awesome thanks for that explanation! Any insight to how I could wire that up to work with the 2 wire harness coming from the truck? The harness on the fan side has 3 terminals from the older model but right now will only turn on from the PCM sending power to the fan. Would be nice to utilize the thermocouple like you said!

    • @Beardest_Fishing
      @Beardest_Fishing 6 років тому +22

      Boosted2k What you're more than likely seeing is a 3 terminal fan being a ground and 2 hot wires. 1 hot wire powers the thermocouple and 1 power wire from the ECU as a failsafe if the thermocouple is frozen or non functional. First you need to figure out which your current power wire is, the constant hot (while the engine is running) or the hot from the ECU. You can do it with a test light or as simply as a hair dryer or heat gun. On a cold start take the heat gun and blow hot air on the thermocouple (not sure how hot hair dryers get but heat guns get HOT) if the fan turns on after a few seconds your power is coming from a constant hot, if the thermocouple gets very hot and no fan, it's coming from the ECU. I'd bet a weeks pay that your 2 wire plug from your truck is a ground and a hot from the ECU, as the stock fan you had was just supplemental to the clutch fan as a clutch fan is nothing more than a thermocouple allowing the clutch to spin freely when it's cold and lock up when it's hot. If this is the case then you only need to wire the 3rd unused pin on your trucks harness to a fused hot that only comes on with the ignition. The 2 sources of power to the fan you used is so the radiator can stay cool with 2 different sources of heat. The thermocouple will run the fan with high ambient temps (if it is hot under the hood) and the ECU will control inside engine temps if the ambient temps are very low (winter). I kinda over explained it but I wanted anybody who reads this in the future to understand without having to search for information elsewhere.

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому +2

      Yeah definitely! Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll have to get around to playing with it one of these days. Nobody has seemed to figure out how to make the v6 3 wire fan work on the 2 wire HEMI harness and I don't have that truck to be able to throw a multimeter on it and find out. I also would be interested to know if the thermocouple engages a low speed fan setting that does not turn as fast/loud until the PCM kicks in its activated high speed circuit. Right now you have just a full ON?OFF situation. Would be nice to have a quieter low speed activated by the thermocouple. If I feed that circuit a full 12v I'm sure it would just come on full blast also...

    USE CAUTION - I suggest checking the AC pressures. If there is something missing in the conversion the fan will not turn on for the AC condenser and cause the high side pressure to go too high and damage the AC system. I learned this the hard way = blew out seals on 4 AC compressors after doing mods on a RAM 2500. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure out the problem and I only stumbled onto it by doing my own recharge and truck sitting idling, I witnessed high side pressure climb and fan not turning on.

      Thank you for confirming this for me. One my old Ram (2006) I used to disconnect the A/C fan during winter because I didn't like hearing it run whenever I used the defroster. Once it got warm, and I used my A/C on the way home from work, I noticed it stopped blowing cold while I was stopped, then remembered I had the fan disconnected. I figured that couldn't be good for it and turned it off until I got home and reconnected the fan.

    • @royj8549
      @royj8549 6 років тому +3

      Good point, but since we're using the stock AC plug / fan circuit, its primary trigger is AC condense pressure, followed by coolant temp.
      That's why when you change the fan trigger using a programmer, you do it by altering AC + coolant temp, not coolant temp alone. So unless your PCM is shot (in which case there're bigger issues...), the e-fan will be triggered by condenser psi before coolant temp.

    First of all, I’d like to know why they don’t do this in the first place? It appears to be very efficient. Is it still meeting expectations?
    Also, it’s on me, but I didn’t realize there were two fans installed already. Just had no reason to look.
    I understand the drag coefficient on the engine mounted fan, but how is it more efficient to remove two fans and replace it with one? Just curious.
    That said, I have a 2013 Ram HEMI I’d like to improve mileage and efficiency of operation. This looks like a good fix 👍🏼

    What are you hoping to get by installing the 180 degree thermostat with this mod? Is 200 degrees too hot? Why have the fan run so hard if it isn't needed?

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому +1

      Hey Michael the 180* thermostat gives you a bit more performance by keeping the engine and your intake temps a bit cooler. The fan can still be set at around 200* for stop and go traffic as you said to keep it from running constantly!

      I was going to ask the same question. Many times with a mod like this you wind up doing more harm than good. The best engineers put this truck together a certain way for a certain reason. Not to ruffle any feathers, but I agree with you Michael Wauters.

      The engines operate most efficiently and cleanly at 200-205. Running cooler engine temperatures does NOT help power or mpg. Lowering intake temp does.

    I got like three pieces of flat iron and some old steel nails and I just cut the nails and welded them on the correct spacing on the flat bar and welded the flat bars together and I had like half a horseshoe5 and that fit into the spanner wrench holes I think weighed like 30 lbs too it was super unnecessary but I still have that thing and it has come in handy more than a few times after that, I definitely want to get that electric fan now that thing looks easy to install electric fan now I think that's very easy to use

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому

      I just left the stock DiabloSport tune settings which turn the fan on at 204* and turn it back off at 190*. My active grille shutters are still in and are programmed to keep the truck at around 203*. If I lower the fan temps without removing the shutters the fan will just be running 24/7 almost cause the grilles will stay shut when the truck is moving with my 180* thermostat.

      @agilliam1980 6 років тому

      Very easy to remove. Not much really holds on the plastic cover. There is only a few push clips that hold it on the bottom and a few clips that hold the top in. You have some bolts under that holds to the bumper support/absorber that need to be removed. You don’t have to remove the grill or headlights. Once you get the cover off then you can remove the support/absorber then the metal bat is held in by 6 bolts 3 on each side.

    Is there a mopar shroud that goes around this fan as well? Did you ever end up extending the harness so that you could have it clipped in where it was supposed to go? Do you still have the truck and the same cooling fan? Awesome video!

    • @BoostedMotorsports

      The V6 fan/shroud is all one unit so once you buy and bolt it up you’re all set! Never had an issue with it and ended up cutting some zip ties in another video to get a bit more length out of the harness to put it in the proper spot. If you search the channel you’ll see the wire harness vid for the v6 fan 😬🤟

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому

      Peter Joseph Depends what your goals are with your car. You would probably benefit most with finding a tuner in your area and getting the car dyno tuned using the program that they are most comfortable with. If that's not an option then next options would be to contact one of the remote tuners (Dan Lessner, Roe, Dan Cragen) and get them to send you a tune based on the mods you have!

    Quick question. My V6 fan is coming in the mail today. I know this is your personal truck what are your thoughts on doing the V6 fan but still have the active vents in front?? I'm figuring that's where the secondary clutch fan comes in place

    • @BoostedMotorsports
      @BoostedMotorsports  6 років тому

      Hey Anthony I would ditch the active grille shutters in the front for sure. They work so well that they rely on the mechanical fan constantly spinning to cool the engine. If you leave the shutters on the V6 fan will be coming on and off a lot. With the shutters removed my fan rarely comes on unless in traffic or with the ac on 👍
