Great video. "S" turns were a great indicator for what the fish wanted. Prime trolling speed used to be 2.8 - 3.1 mph. During the "S" turn if an inside rod tripped, the fish wanted a slower presentation; when an outside rod tripped they were looking for a quicker presentation. Catch a laker, you're moving too slow. Catch a steely, you're moving along okay for kings....
In the late '80s/early '90s there was a show on TV called 'Charlie White's Fishing Machine' which was filmed off the coast of B.C. Charlie had developed a camera that he would lower down to view the action of the salmon as they came into the lure/bait on a TV monitor at the back of his boat. It was fascinating to see what was really going on down there. It was a great show! 'Must see TV' for us salmon fishermen! lol
I remember watching early Charlie White films in a rented gymnasium with most of the hard core Bellingham salmon fishermen. I was pretty young, and was blown away when he dipped the lure in bilge water and proceeded to get bite after bite.
Absolutely love this video. I learn so much from your videos. I swear that salmon trolling knowledge of the great lakes is hard to come by online. Really cool footage on the bottom!
Out here in the Puget sound, we use flashers to add extra action to our spoons and hoochies (squid) baits. Ads extra action and looks like another salmon going for the bait to trigger strikes.
You videos are the best I have seen on here for very in depth and interesting keep up the great work and if your ever in Ontario Canada my boat is always available
Another great 1st,,,from the Michigan Man himself. The Underwater gopro footage of the fish looking at chasing your spoons was intense. Stuff like this should be archived with the fish and game, and DNR. Great footage Kyle.
I was on a charter once years ago and proceeded to apply some sun tan lotion. The captain screamed at me and said don't ever put that stuff on out here it gets on everything and will kill the bite. Now I take that into consideration whenever I am fishing. Great vid.
Most baits are trying to mimic injured fish. That’s why the pattern of pulling straight doesn’t produce as much as turning. Fish aren’t just mindless predators, they actually help cull the weak and injured and avoid the healthy fish that can reproduce. It’s actually fascinating when you really think about it.
5:25 i would always watch my reels during the turns because of the natural movement catching my eye, but i did notice more bites during them too. great point
Trolling for coho we normally use a stacker so we can use two releases.. pretty common they pop it off the first then come back on it .. use to be pretty common method
Replace those treble hooks on your spoons and tail hooks on stick baits with a single hook. You might miss a hit every now and then, but hook ups are more productive. Cold water salmon and lake trout can work two hooks on a treble against the third to spit the hook. Or that’s what we observed back in the 80’s and 90’s when we started fishing Lake Superior.
A trick that l employ after a rigger is in and set, take a release, clip it to that cable free sliding, and let out about 20’ of line and lure and pinch it on.An ounce of weight might need to be attached to the clip to get the release past belly in the cable. Now have the most bored person on the boat pull the clip up and let it settle back down.Over and over .This works good!
If you can get fresh salmon eggs you can pop them and rub the juice on the lure. It turns white and sticks to spoon. Just one egg makes huge difference in bite or pass. Trick I learned spinner fishing steelhead. S turns my dad taught me 50 years ago. Game changer.
Interestingly, turning when fishing works remarkably well for Trout also. Even running a troll in a lake with electric motor it works. And it works by running the boat/kayak Around fishing spots while the leader line passes through the area that the boat/kayak avoided. Fish see the hull and hide. Going Around the fish in spots while the length of the line makes it troll through the area doesn't spook the fish, resulting in a bite.
I didn't see the baitfish at the beginning. Were you talking about the four bubbles or was there actually some baitfish in the background I couldn't see?
I'm new to down rigger fishing, why do you twist the line before attaching the clip to it? Seems like it would add more line to take up when you pop it loose?
Did you know you can put a light trout spinning rod with a light weight in the prop wash for Coho. Bonus fish. I don't know your gear but I'm sure you'll have a favorite. Me I use a Apex 1" pink yellow gold but I am in the salt water off Vancouver Island BC. Oh yeah that little Apex is unreal. But Coho are very aggressive as you know. Just so ya know Sockeye are very fickle but once ya get them going hang on. Anyways awesome channel I'll subscribe. As I was subscribing the prop wash in the opening was worth a1000 words to me. Coho fishing is the most fun. Do you guys get tide lines with weeds and logs if so get back to me.
Loving the videos! I’m glad I found your channel, your style of fishing is exactly what I’m trying to learn since I’ve moved to the a spot on the Great Lakes( Lake Huron) so I’ve taken up float fishing rivers and deep water trolling
I mounted the go pro on a hand held stick and then used a roll of electrical tape to attach it to the downrigger ball. It took quite a few tries to get the right angled down where the camera would pick up the spoon!
hey XXL CC, nice underwater footage!! couple questions: I don't have lemon joy soap, can I just dawn soap? Or what else would you recommend? How much do you put in? What snap swivel brand and size do you use? Do you use cheater lines? Thanks!!! You're the best! Love your boat too :)
I haven't experimented with other soaps! Lemon joy is a trick that came from the west coast years ago and there rumor has it salmon prefer that scent👍 It has always worked well for me so I haven't changed. I would lose sleep at night thinking about washing all my baits with a soap scent the fish didn't like😅 I let them sit in a bucket of soapy water or ill wash them like I'm doing dishes! No real formula for it.
cool video I live on Vancouver Island with all those fish not taking when I see that here I start zig zagging because the main reason there not biting is the speed zig zag works because one way speeds up spoon other way slows it down. So watch when they hit and make your boat troll at that speed works every time
Great video. A lot of charter captains DO NOT clean lures or add scent. In fact, they leave the 'fish juice' on the lure as the enzymes may help make the lure more attractive. Some guys even take new lures, flies, etc. and place them in a fish's mouth to 'break them in' and add those enzymes. When I run Brad's cut plugs I do add alewife scent to the pad for those fall kings. Tight lines! What model GoPro do you use? How do you attache it to the ball? Thanks
We just tape the go pro to the downrigger ball with LOTS of electrical tape. I vary depths depending on where I’m fishing but the case we have on the go pro allows us to have is as deep as 196 ft.
that was cool, crazy how many looks the spoon got without the fish hitting it, starting to ponder how to improve on that for next time I go. sometimes I'll put a dot of procure scent gel in the back of the spoon but I do the same thing I wash my spoons before every trip not the fly's though hummm?
I’m loving video very much, but confused about wrapping line around your fingers. Was the lure in the water when you did that? A big fish bite would slice your fingers open or worse. Maybe I’m not seeing what your doing correctly. Anyway. Be safe and love these videos! Back to watching!
Question about scents: do you have any way of washing a full spool? I keep my rods in the garage while I use a pellet smoker, wondering if I can get by trying without having to purchase new line.
were you able to actually watch it live??? or did you have to bring the camera up to watch.... Sorry , don't know anything about these cameras...Cool video though...
I was told by another youtuber that the best lures are the ones that had caught fish in the past and you shouldnt clean them cause the scent is what attracts them.
You are right. If a fish hits your lure, it will kept getting hit over and over. Even when using meat on meat rigs, never replace that meat unless it doesn't swim right anymore. If you need to, rinse the meat rig in the lake water when done. I know @AdventureChasing recommends lemon soap - and I did try it at one time, but it didn't result in more hits. The thing about fishing is that you have to find out what works for YOU and YOUR boat. What works for one guy won't always work for another. Many, many factors involved.
How did you rig up the go pro so it stayed on the cable? I would love to do this with mine but I'm not sure how to do it and feel confident that it won't fall off.
First I put it on a go pro hand held stick then I used a roll of electrical tape to tape it to the down rigger! A little risky no doubt but worth the chance. I'm excited to get back out there to get more footage like this. It took many tries to get the angle of the camera right so it would get the spoon in the frame.
someone looked at this and if i remember right they found the worst things to have on a presentation were petroleum products, cigarette fingers, perfumes, and others i don't remember. things that had no effect were mostly natural scents, especially ones found in or near water
What part of the Midwest are ya from?! I drive up to the north shore from Saint Paul all the time to shore and stream fish. Wish I had a boat like that man. Great vid!
This is my favorite fishing content. You cannot beat underwater strike videos.
Thank you, Bill. We love it too!
Umm, top water?
Can’t get enough of the salmon videos, keep it up!
Going to try to keep up with weekly salmon fishing videos this summer👍
Great video. "S" turns were a great indicator for what the fish wanted. Prime trolling speed used to be 2.8 - 3.1 mph. During the "S" turn if an inside rod tripped, the fish wanted a slower presentation; when an outside rod tripped they were looking for a quicker presentation. Catch a laker, you're moving too slow. All true. Also, if you are catching lakers you might be too deep. I like to stay around 45 feet.
I’m sure after everyone watches this you’ll see all the boats trolling in a zig zag pattern! Solid video! Keep it up!
It could be an interesting August😅

I saw that movie myself. It taught me a lot about salmon fishing.
@@keithingraham8752 Yes, it was good stuff! I learnt a thing or two, too!
Those videos just got re-released. On youtube

Super cool angle. Always interesting to see how the fish are reacting. Love the vids.
Thank you, Tyler. Glad you enjoy them👍
We need a video on how to mount the GoPro to the rigger!!
Fax
first time i see a salmon underwater footage and i LOVE it brilliant work guys keep it up
Cool video as always! I look forward to your videos. Can’t wait for more.
Thank you, Angel! We'll have lots more coming out this summer👍
Love your Salmon video's, keep em coming!

Thank you, Kevin. We'll keep them coming for sure👍
Great stuff Kyle, keep up the good work. It’s all about the fun ! 🐟🐟🐟
Thank you Jonny, we'll keep them coming! We're going to do a video like this in August when the big dogs are staging👍
Awesome underwater video!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Denise!
That’s some awesome underwater footage!
Can’t wait to get back out there to do more underwater filming!
Very cool footage! I fish the southern end of Lake Michigan.

8 minute video Kyle really? Not fair man we want more that was awesome. KING OF KINGS doin it again!!!!! Thank you sir..
Great video and thank you for the spoon cleaning tips!
Great video mate, love this! 😁
Thank you! We’re glad you enjoyed it😊
Pretty crazy how much that spoon looks like a plug cut herring!!!
Michigan Stinger spoons are great!
5:25 i would always watch my reels during the turns because of the natural movement catching my eye, but i did notice more bites during them too. great point
Lures behind the boat are going slower during a turn. That's why the action is different.
Fun video to watch. Thanks for sharing it.
Wow you are so smart. None of us knew that at all. 😂😂😂

Have to explore a bit😀
Very good video guys 😎 the narration was really well done.

did that other rod have a hit at 7:26?
3:45 I’m no expert but wouldn’t you want a fishier smell to the spoons?
New subscriber love your content. How do you attach your go pro to the downrigger line ?
How is your GOPRO mounted to your ball?
Nice job Bud!
what camera for underwater footage are you using?
What kind of set up did you use for the cam an the holder? That was awesome. I'm trying to get video footage my self too.

😅 no doubt!
How well do those downrigger releases work? They look like Black’s releases
So awesome 😎
Thank you, Nicholas👍
How about adding scent? Garlic is a favorite in the Pacific northwest. Cool footage, I always wonder what's going on down there!
You never know!
I use anise for Kokanee in Utah, garlic works great too

Nice catch! Your not using weight with that setup?
this was awesome, keep doin this!!
Cool video.
Thanks Wesley👊
Think the soap leaves scent too? I have a towel I do a good wipe with.
The water should wash off any extra scent on the lure. I haven’t had any issues with not wiping them off
Great video. A lot of charter captains DO NOT clean lures or add scent. In fact, they leave the 'fish juice' on the lure as the enzymes may help make the lure more attractive. The fish scent wont matter but gas tobbaco n other stiff will throw scent off
Nice work Boys 👊🏾

Can you show how you hold the camera, and how deep is it?
We just tape the go pro to the downrigger ball with LOTS of electrical tape. I vary depths depending on where I’m fishing but the case we have on the go pro allows us to have is as deep as 196 ft.

what a great video. Thanks.
I’m loving video very much, but confused about wrapping line around your fingers.

A big fish bite would slice your fingers open or worse.

Anyway. Be safe and love these videos!
Back to watching!
Probably using a Chamberlain release.
Can you show how you rig the gopro to the cannon ball. Really enjoyed the video
Does the lemon dish soap really work????
Love this video, I may never run in a straight line again. Wonder what a flasher fly looks like on a turn
Right! Just out there doing circles on the shelf😅
Question about scents: do you have any way of washing a full spool? I keep my rods in the garage while I use a pellet smoker, wondering if I can get by trying without having to purchase new line.
Hey can you setup a video of how you managed to keep your gopro on the cannonball without losing the perfect field of view
were you able to actually watch it live??? or did you have to bring the camera up to watch.... Sorry , don't know anything about these cameras...Cool video though...
