- I have a gelatos tutorial for you this week. I am sharing a great way to layer gelatos in distinct layers PLUS I'm sharing 6 techniques for using them too. Click Show More to find supplies, and find more art tutorials on / kimdellow
If you ave worked with Gelatos you will know that they are perfect for blending but it isn't quite as easy to layer them without blending them. So I'm sharing a technique to help you use your gelatos to make lovely and bright layers.
I've used the gelatos in six different ways on this piece, so if you are looking for ideas on how to use your gelatos then this is definitely the video for you! It is a mixed media canvas and I am using my anemone flower image that I showed you how to color with pencils in last week's video (bit.ly/2wutyux). Don't forget that you can get your hands on this image too as it is in my Etsy shop ready for you to download and print and use in your next project goo.gl/LZRb1c.
I would love to see your work so please do link me in on social media anything you share that was inspired by my videos and projects, all my links are below.

I sometimes use a brayer to apply gel medium to seal my gelatos. My hands often shake so using a pallette knife can be awkward for me. The brayer works great! Thank you for showing us how to seal these! I wouldn't have thought to do this. I'm so pleased as this means I can use them more often!
Oh that sounds a good way! Thanks Lindsey.
Wonderful informative videos, directly to the point, no wasted time on fiddling with equipment or pets. She is prepared and gives us a lot of instructions in a good amount of time. Love Kim's videos.
Ahh thank you! I think I have a low attention span so I try to get to the point quickly 🤣
Yesterday I bought my first gelatos.i love them.i love this art technique.i love using them.so much.i made my first project using them, and I love it.i made my art project for class.we were supposed to take a picture of palm trees with our camera and blow it up to poster size, and color it with the gelatos.i love it.it is so much fun, using them, and creating with them.thank you for your video.i love it.and my gelatos.more then anything. Thanks!!☕️💋🎉👍💡😁💗
Oh that sounds like a lot of fun! I am so glad you liked the video and are enjoying your Gelatos!
The absolute best tutorial on gelatos I’ve seen! I learned so much. Thank you. I’m so glad I could slow the video one notch. I look forward to more. 💜
I'm glad you enjoyed it Tina, have fun playing!
Your video finally explained to me how one could possibly create art with gelatos. Thank you!
LOL! Thank you and I am glad it could help!
This is beautiful!!! I love Gelatos and Neo color II crayons. I’ve recently learned that midge podge works great to layer Gelatos. I tried it and it is good for backgrounds such as this one. Even easier, a spray fixative (even hairspray) works. Must faster.
Beautiful 🤩 gorgeous 💓🙏🏼
Great video! I just bought myself gelatos so I’m going to have to do something lolol thanks for sharing your idea 💗
Have fun with them!
Love this canvas Kim! I’m going to try “sealing” my layers to build up a background. Thank you!
Thank you! Hope you have fun trying it out and building up your layers!
Just discovered your blog and videos. I rarely use my gelatos but seeing how well they layer with carefully applied gel medium is a game changer. Looking forward to viewing your other videos and playing with my gelatos again! Thank you.
I am really glad it could help Gina! And welcome to my channel!
I love this video. You make things seem achievable and I feel confident in having a go. The colours used make me smile. Thank you.
Ahh that's great! Thank you and enjoy having a play with it!
Another quick tip just in case you didn't know, gelato's will set with heat so you won't loose you layer or they won't move around. :) blow dryer or heat tool helps huge
Thanks for the tip Angie. Really interesting. It doesn't seem to work for me but I think that might be because I was putting my gelatos on quite thickly. I will try it on a thinner application next time.
Hi Kim. I am so glad I came across this video. I only recently purchased Gelatos for the first time and are still getting to know them - now at least I know how to layer them. Thanks for this informativeand entertaining video. I love the end result. xx
That's my pleasure, have lots of fun playing!
real enjoy this love your voice and the love you have thank you
Ahh thank you Ruth, I am really glad you enjoyed it.
Absolutely love this! Trying it out tonight using same color combo too!
Have fun paying with it Naomi!

I'm very glad! Thank you for watching!
Awesome! 😊
Great tip. Thanks for sharing😊
+Robin Veysey glad you liked it! 😄
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you, I am glad you liked it!
Love your videos Kim, they are informative and your narration is concise and well done very enjoyable to watch Nothing is more distracting than a poorly done narration of a video. And of course your stamp line is great too, wish more vendors in the states would carry them, but shopping directly with Paper artsy is not a problem, they are great to do business with . Keep them both coming.
Patricia Gutuskey Thank you! I am really glad you are enjoying my videos. Thanks for the lovely feedback and for watching them!
Absolutely wonderful!!! So colourful and vivid!!! TFS!! xxx
Thank you! Bright colours are fun aren't they?!
Thank you so much. I'm new to all this and your video was extremely helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful.
Thanks again Debbie 🎨💜💚

+agnes ashford thank you! I'm glad you like it!
You are amazing, very nice
Thank you so much....as it is, I just got gelatos in two days ago and I'm really looking for ways to play with them!!!
(I also got Dina Wakley media scribble sticks in about an hour ago if you have any hints!! ;) )
Ooo I have just published another Gelatos video today! It is here if you want to see it: bit.ly/2L1pk8d In fact that's a link to my playlist of watersoluble crayon ideas videos! I don't have any of the Dina Wakley but I am sure the Gelato and Neocolor techniques would work with the scribble sticks too! Have a play!
Love the tutorial. I find it so hard to get things in the UK
Oh I hear you Christella! It's seems to be getting harder as well doesn't it? And so many craft shops have closed too, so sad! I'm glad you liked the tutorial!
This is excellent Kim. You managed to keep your circle layer too. I like it a lot. Would clear gesso do a similar thing as the matte medium if it were put on with a palette knife? Just wondering. This is great though. xx
+Dorothy Radley Thanks! Try it and see what happens! The only thing I find with clear gesso is that it isn't completely transparent so you may get a filmy finish. Also I'm not sure how the gritty gesso texture will work, it might be too 'grabby' and pull the gelatos layer with it as you put it on, but I say try it and see if you like it! No harm giving it a go and let me know how you get on with it! 😃
Hi Kim, a great video as usual! I just thought that it might be less disruptive to each gelato layer if the gel medium was applied to a gel plate and then the canvas was carefully pressed against the gel plate? I know I've seen another UA-camr do something like that but I can't remember who (I don't want anyone to think it was an original idea from me!).
Ooo I have never thought of doing this! Sounds interesting! I suppose it would all depend on the viscosity of the medium? As you lift the canvas you might get those little peek textures? Oh I wanna try this now 😂 thanks for the tip!
Thank you for this video, I'm new to gelatos so really keen to give this a go, I have a canvas I bought some time back without any clue what to do with it haha. Can I ask though, what do you do with your canvas once finished? Do you hang them somehow? I haven't used it yet because I never knew how I could hang/attach to a nail on the wall after painting/creating....
Thank you 😊
I actually haven't really hung a lot of mine, not properly anyway. I have a couple on my wall in my studio that I have 'hung' with a removable wall tape/ velcro system because they tend to be temporary displays. If you want to hang yours more permanently then I am sure there will be videos here on UA-cam with advice on how to hang a canvas that will fit with the kind of canvas you are hanging!

💚💚💚💚💚
Interesting
Thank you Chris, I hope it helped!
This is great Kim. Full of useful information. Could you also seal the gelatos with a spray sealant? Would that work?
Thanks Maria, I am glad you like it. As to the spray sealants, I don't actually know. I've never tried it on gelatos. I am not sure what sealant you could use. Maybe someone else here has an answer. As I wanted to keep working on my layers the medium works well. If you were to use a sealant it would have to be at the end or you would need a workable one, which lets you seal then work over the top, and the only workable spray sealants I have come across are for soft pastels. Sorry I can't be more helpful on this.
Yes!
Embracing colour
trying to find the palette board you said was linked below. what category is it in?
Hi Samara, do you mean the board I am working on? It is called 'canvas board' and is the first on the list in the description.
Did you gesso the canvas board before you put down the Gelatos? Thanks.
Hi Kathryn, no this was a commercially pre-prepped board and I didn't add to it just worked on it out of the packet.
Were the gelatos you used a set of 18? I have the set of 12, but would like to have the colors you have in the various shades of yellow/orange.
If I remember rightly it was a couple of sets that they did when they first launched them into the mixed media art market. Back then they were doing them in sets of 4-5 sticks from the same color families I think. I don't actually know if you can still get those sets.
Do you think Mod podge or gesso would work instead of matte medium?
Hiya, thanks for the question. I have to admit I am not sure as I haven't tried it. But if I was going to take a stab at guessing - I think that the gesso will mix too easily with the gelatos because you have to paint it on, it isn't really self-levelling and even if you are using the transparent gesso you will lose some of the brightness of the gelato color as even transparent or clear gessos aren't that transparent. I'm guessing Mod Podge would work. But I think the best thing to do is give it a go on a test piece first, then let me know how it works, I am curious! 😂😂
Will liquitex matte medium also work?
Yes, it should work the same way.
Did you gesso the canvas?
Hi Norma, no didn't. This was a preprepared board and I used it straight from the pack.
Where does one find punchanilla?
Hiya Arlene, sorry for the delayed response! So I do have a couple of links in the description on this video to punchinella for if you are in either the UK or the US. Other places to look are your local craft shop or haberdashery. Failing that you can get punchinella stencils, for instance I think The Crafter's Workshop have one. Hope that helps!
Kim Dellow thank you!! 😀
Why don’t you use matte spray between layers, much easier and works the same as gel.
Because I wanted to use gel to see how it worked.
@@KimDellow :) good to see how well it works too. i *only* have a matte medium gel to act as a sealer or a spray on type. other than mod podge but i don't like using mod podge, really. tfs!
Very interesting & informative video, but please leave the background 'music' out - it's really annoying & I'd rather just listen to your voice.
Hi Jackie, thanks for your feedback. I've been learning alot about sound. I hope that if you watch some of my more recent videos you will find the sound better.
Hi Kim & thanks for your reply. I've subscribed, so I'll definitely be watching more. I've already noticed the great improvement in sound in the later videos. :)
Ahh thank you! 💜 It's a bit of a steep learning curve 😂 so thanks for sticking with me and being patient! And for the feedback too!
