Really good question; I've been running the needle bearings in my personal 80 for a while now and haven't seen anything bad happen. I did notice a tighter axle which locates the seal surface better. I don't know why toyota would have done it if it wasn't a benefit, but I've seen stranger things... I guess the brass is more durable for hard wheeling or banging on the thing... Maybe it's application specific 🤔
Hey Nigel, if you don't need spindles and want to do all OEM parts otherwise it's usually about $6-750. If you need spindles they are $300 each so they can change the price quite a bit.
Stock axle breather vrs aftermarket breather. Why would having the slight vacuum be beneficial couldn’t that potentially create intrusion from exterior elements?
The IFS tacoma/fj cruiser and probably others use a breahter that isn't a one way valve. I'm not sure which is better as you are right, an axle with a leak/damaged seal or something could draw in water or... When you see one of these birfield axles with a bad axle seal they do have a bunch of axle grease in the oil. But when everything is working correctly the oem breather works great!
@@El_Jaco im no engineer but vacuum on a solid from axle might help the knuckle grease put pressure against the seal and help keep the grease separate from the diff oil , I’ll have to ask a mechanic engineer . Im sure Toyota did this for a reason
Thank you for your time. I'm rebuilding my 95 80 front end.
Excellent synopsis and info. I need to do these on my HDJ81 at some point. Thank you for posting. I have the kit from Cruiser Outfitters.
How do you feel about pressing in the old (new OEM) style brass bushing into the new oem spindle, I have seen a lot of conflating opinions?

Wealth of knowledge. Thanks for posting. How do I hire you?
Great info! How much would you charge for an axle rebuild?

@@El_Jaco thanks for getting back to me. Sounds good. Where are you located?
