Land Cruiser Crawler Gears INSTALLED! Low Range Transfer Case Upgrade 80/100 Series

  • Can we make it crawl?? Today I'm Installing aftermarket Trail-Gear 3.11:1 low range crawler gears into my Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series transfer case. These fit both the 80 and 100 series (FJ80 and FJ100) H1FA/HF2AV and will reduce the gear ratio by 25% by replacing the low speed gear and idler gear, which makes it easier to off-road at a slower pace with more control... especially if you're rock crawling. These will not get the cruiser as low of a crawl ratio as a Pickup or 4Runner with dual transfer cases, but it'll definitely be an improvement over stock! Follow along as I build these transfer cases, enjoy!

    I bought a 1993 FZJ 80 and have been watching a lot of videos. You do a great job and are an inspiration to the home mechanic. You have basic tools, and you are very clean, methodical and meticulous. I think you talk about the right level of detail and show us some of your mistakes as well. The music and editing is really good, too. Makes it easy and entertaining to watch.

    I’m really enjoying the way you do videos. Particularly the level of explanation and detail of your descriptions. I even like that you aren’t afraid to show how you’re doing something for the first time. This is what DIY is about. Well done!

    Back in the 1960's my father was in the Brazilian military, he was being trained to be a mechanic, than the guy there (I have no idea of the patent) said to him "dismount and remount the transmission of that vw bug" my father did what he was told and.... somehow the car ended up with 4 reverse and 1 forward gear haha. I remembered this when you said that no matter how many times you do things with gears you always think you will mess things up.

    Your shortened version of documenting an involved job obviously works for people. With my channel, I kill people with TONS of detail and explanation. The reason why we make super detailed videos is we don't want to lose anyone, not even a total beginner. With your style, there is no doubt in my mind some people will leave this video confused. In contrast to your 18 minute video, my channel is coming out with a 4-part video series on rebuilding the same HF2A transfer case, which includes the installation of the low range gear set you installed and also installing a high range gear set and the part-time 4wd kit. Our series amounts to around 4 hours of footage. We weren't the brains behind it though. We were just the cameramen. Our buddy Georg who owns Valley Hybrids, a Land Cruiser specialty shop in Stockton California does all the instruction, and he does an incredible job.
    With my channel, like you, I'm quite often learning while I'm filming. Probably around 95% of the jobs we film are us doing it for the very first time. We explain everything we are doing while we're doing it. If it ends up our technique didn't work, that's where video editing comes in. We talk about what didn't work so people don't make the same mistake and then we show people the technique that did work. It's more labor intensive to do it the way we do it, but your audience would benefit from your mistakes just as much it benefits from your successes.
    I applaud your willingness to help out your fellow man by making these videos. I'm just here to let you know and others reading my comments know, there is a much more detailed documentation of this job in existence for those that need the extra detail and explanation. You can find the series on my Timmy the Toolman channel. Just search this title: "80/100 Series Transfer Case Rebuild/Modification (Low/High Range Gears & Part Time 4wd Kit)."

      Yes the process was very involved. I would hope people watching understand that whether it’s this video, or any of my engine rebuild (or other) videos, these projects take hours if not days and many mistakes were made whether they’re filmed or not. This is a learning process and UA-cam can make things seem flawless when they aren’t.
      I watch your channel all the time. I know your video will be great and informative. I just moved out of CA and used to live in a city south of Stockton called Fresno.

      It's great to know you watch our videos. We were lucky enough to partner with Georg to create our series on this job. Georg has rebuilt around 200 of these transfer cases and he knows them like this back of his hand.
      Where did you move to? I'm retiring from the fire service in 6 months and moving from the California Bay Area for sure. I just haven't figured out if I'm staying in California or leaving for another state.

      @@RM_Garage I was looking a Boise as a possibility. What part of Idaho did you move to? I'm not a big snow person, so I don't want to be buried in snow a large part of the year. I'm conservative and don't like how California is governed. Gavin Newsom is a complete moron. We pay a lot of taxes and don't get much for it.

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  6 місяців тому

      @TimmyTheToolman that’s why a lot of people are moving I would assume. I’m in the boise area, but not IN boise. There are lots of towns by boise that are better to live in IMO. The snow isn’t terrible, honestly wish we had more! Having 4 seasons is really nice.

    @DmitryKoldunov Рік тому +1

    The leaking front and end seals (if I caught what was said correctly) it is a reliable sign the bearings are worn out. They both, bearings and seals, are supposed to be replaced. Apologies for the bad news.

    Thanks for this, I'm planning this job for my 97 and it's great to see the process and not just the sfm. Auburn Toyota Land Cruiser Association had a tech day today at valley hybrids for Tcase but I missed it.
    How's the 1fz coming? My refresh is running great but that coolant hairline crack still bugs me, bright side I have seen coolant move since I finished the 1fz refresh, it's a silly weep.
    I geared and ARB locked to 4:88 what a huge drivability different those 4:88 make on 35's, looking forward to seeing what the low range transfer case gears will do.

    Those little cutting disks like to explode because you're not keeping them square to the rotation when they are buried in the metal.

    I would not trust smaller gear teeth in my transfer case, also aftermarket gears are lower quality than toyota gears. I think best would be to have 2 of these transfer cases so you have 2.5 and 6.25 gear ratios if you use double low gear.
