Maybe because Ali was ahead on points from early in the fight and never fell behind. Even the 'experts' admitted this during the fight, while claiming Ali was in bad shape, not the fighter he used to be, too slow, no movement, blah blah. Then with one punch in the 15th Ali proved the experts wrong and set the record straight. Oscar got up twice, but he was out on his feet from the moment that lone punch scored.
Bonavena was a tough cookie. He proved that in his 2 losses to Frazier. He was too slow and awkward to handle Ali's agility and defense. This was far from Ali at his best but 4 years of inactivity takes time to come back from. He was much improved when he got to Frazier even though he lost that one.

Commentators so far off the mark. A weird bias. This is such a biased commentory. And this isn't the only example out there. Maybe it was the Ali/Vietnam thing. Commentators stubbornly referring to him as 'Clay' etc. Ali lands 4, 5, 6, 7 solid head punches, punch after punch after punch, they barely get mentioned. Head shot after head shot by Ali... head-snapping punches any one of which would have put a lesser boxer on the floor. Barely mentioned, if at all. Why was that I wonder? Only Bonavena's occasionally contacting punches get mentioned. And replayed? Ali out manouevers and out-thinks Bonavena, but is classified by the commentators as 'static'..? He was fighting a brawler with a very strong chin. Bonavena could really take a punch. But Ali got it just right. Ahead in points still managed that grand finale! Ali was a very clever boxer. Like a chess player. I don't think the commentators here were aware of quite how clever he was. Ask George Foreman though...
Grand Finale your comment is hilarious but the truth is Ali never went back to his corner after the knockdown and was allowed to stand over Ringo awful refereeing and Bonavena was scoring well on Ali this was one of Ali's toughest fights of his entire career
That's because Cosell had seen from up close what Ali had once been capable of, and with a monster like Frazier looming next, he also thought Ali was in over his head. He was, only temporarily right. Ali proved his magic despite this erosion of skills
This was the first fight I ever saw. I was 4 years old turning 5 in two weeks. I remember my mother and father talking about whether I should be allowed to watch it or not that afternoon, and I remember my father coming into my room and summoning me to the television that night. He said "Nicky, this is Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of all time. He's gonna win." We had popcorn and soft drinks and I sat at the base of his recliner and watched the fight and there was much bonding. When it was over he said, "Don't ever fight another man unless he throws the first punch" and sent me to bed. In retrospect that was probably the deal he made with my mother. Also I will add, on review later in life, all respect to Oscar Bonavena, he had the heart of a champion but not the reach, I would love to have seen a Rocky Marciano-Oscar Bonavena bout when they were both in their prime. This fight was when Ali took his place in my soul, and Bonavena as well. An interesting note from the fight is that Ali's conditioning was in question but ultimately it was Bonavena's conditioning that was found lacking. Not through any lack of effort on his part I'm certain. I'm also certain that despite all the pre-fight bravado, Ali had long-term respect for Bonavena.
It was Bonavena’s conditioning that determined the result. He came out in Round 15 staggering around on dead legs and then walked into a left hook that probably would not have landed when Oscar had better balance.
no 8 second count after the knock downs, one of Ali's dirtiest fights using elbows and clinches but one has to say a worthy opponent and resurrection of a legend .. R.I.P. Champ
Talk about hostle announcers. Yancy calling him Clay and never saying anything nice. Cossell ragging on Ali constantly and not announcing any of the excellent punches (ie 6th round).
When you look back Howard wasn’t so great a friend. Ali said he wasn’t going to move so much this fight. Howard asking why he’s not. Yancey is just FOS
That interviewer in Mohammed Ali's face and neck, after his epic victory over 'big mouth' Bonevena - was like a leech leprechaun! And what a cheek telling M. A what to do and watch after 15 rounds of boxing. M.A was so beautiful physically and as a boxer, poetry in motion. RIP.
Sometimes you can’t see Ali’s punches connect but Ringo’s hair flies back from the concussion. You can especially see it when the camera is on Ringo’s back.
@@bobbrowne3027whatever hit him 'Enry's hammer, he got up made it too the corner, where Angelo Dundee/corner men did a fantastic job reviving then Ali proceeded to end the fight the next round
Ali never went to a neutral corner after any of the knockdowns. Dempsey lost the second fight because of this yet Ali did it 3 times. Do you think they will now correct the error and give the fight to Bonavena?
We didn't know it at the time but Ali was using this fight as a sparring/training session for his first fight with Frazier in three months. The man was incredible.
This is amazing stuff!! Oscar was a real character and an incredibly tough man. Died a violent death at the Mustang Ranch brothel when he was still a top ten contender.
“And Howard cosell is agitating as usual “. Lol Ya think? This is next level agitating. Ali hadn’t had a chance to catch his breath yet and cosell has him analyzing the fight and taking phone calls from Frazier. Damn bro, let the guy enjoy his victory. Howie is literally stirring the “drama stew” from ringside and in the ring. But I’ll admit, I really miss these days. Especially watching all of the special fights with my best friend John and his Father. Bless their souls.
I saw Ali fight 2 exhibition matches in Vancouver Canada coming back from his exile😢 George Chuvallo defended his heavy weight title of Canada. I think most came to see Ali!!! As Ali left the ring many people rushed to get his autograph. Ali was signing so I got in line and it was like there was an aura around him I couldn't believe I was so close to Ali it was quite a thrill for me even though I was in my mid 20's. I got closer to Ali and as he was signing I reached out and touched his right shoulder! He stopped signing and looked at me with an inquisitive look and his presence was amazing he was a lot taller than my 6 foot frame and as he looked at me I took ny hand away and said sorry and I handed him the fight card that came with the admission. He signed my card M Ali and I still have that autograph and it's still a thrill now when I'm almost 73 yrs old. I also have Sylvestor Stallones auto but Ali's auto is the best. My friends and I went to all his closed circuit fights! Those were exciting days. He has to go down as the greatest boxer of all time. He was smart, fast, good looking, intelligent, charismatic, a mover like no other and that jab took out so many. Ali was the greatest and will be remembered forever that way! 3 times the champion who has done that ??? RIP Ali rest in peace the show is over but the memory lives on in the anals of time ❤😊
Ali was NEVER tired... he wasn't even breathing hard after round 11... he was TALKING to Ringo every time he was "hanging" on him, because he HAD to do it that way, the commission handicapped him!!!
I love how Howard Cossell sarcastically asked Yank if he was rooting against Ali . Could a person be anymore against a fighter than Yancy “ Yank “ Durham. He literally sounds like he hates Ali and still insists on calling him Clay .
He probably did hate Ali. I'm not sure why he made it so plane when there was a $10 million hanging on the result. An Ali loss would have been a disaster for Frazier and his team. Btw, I never thought he was a great manager. Frazier carried him, not the other way around.
Tough Battle in that ring Oscar's Style of fighting was wild, but They both gave all they had . Both so respectful of each other Ali looked so lean, great !!!
….side note I watched a lot of his fights lately and I noticed he has to be the guy with the most rabbit punches ever committed against him one fight the guys was hitting him in the back of the head every other damn punch maybe that’s what really caused his issues later in life all those shots to the back of the head this guy Oscar did it to him also
Ali LOVED Howard and Howard absolutely loved Muhammad..They were great friends..Howard was one of Ali's greatest supporters off screen..He stood up for Ali and would defend Muhammad's stance on the Vietnam War & Ali's season for refusing to go..My favorites of those two were,Ali would always clown on Howard about his Toupee..Many times on camera Muhammad would try to pull Howard's wig off!! Ali tried to teach Howard how to do the Ali Shuffle!! Then other times they would square up & Ali would make Howard try to fake box him!! They loved each other & had a mutual respect..
Ali ravaged by 3 @ a half years layoff. Still an Ali fight always entertaining. Just no legs left after exile. Stamina an issue that never was before. ,,Cosell is good but oscar would've been destoyed by pre exile Ali. Round 15 so exciting,,tells me oscar would've went down early to pre exile Ali
I disagree. The white media used bonavena as a hate mechanism and Ali still prevailed! Btw Howard Cosell wanted Ali to lose as well. I never liked him.
He was quite a character all right. He was reportedly shot to death at a brothel called The Mustang Ranch by the owner’s bodyguard in the 1970s and having an affair with the guy’s wife.

This was far from Ali at his best but 4 years of inactivity takes time to come back from. He was much improved when he got to Frazier even though he lost that one.
Bundinee loved Ali so much..
Beautiful Left, nobody could or should've doubted Ali
Bonavena look like he hit hard Ali is truely the greatest. Went toe 2 toe with some of the toughest fighters . Respect sleep in peace Ali the greatest of all time.
Oscar was a problem because he fought with an awkward rhythm which is sometimes hard to time.
Besides this was only Ali's second fight after the almost 4 year layoff
No disrespect to Ringo he was a tough guy who actually floored Joe FrazierHe was no walk in the park
This is Why it was a good fight for Ali. Ringo's rhythm complimented Frazier's style if Ali could handle it he could fight Frazier's Fight
"Ohhhh that left, it floored him, it came from nowhere!" Cosell always had a knack for great calls...
Ali's toughness is waaay underrated.
Ali was and will always be the best he could of whooped any heavyweight from any era he wasn’t the strongest he was just a skilled technician with sublime skills who would float like a butterfly then sting you like a bee
Ali fought about as well as you punctuate. Holyfield was FAR superior in every category, and would have destroyed him.

There is only ONE! "The Greatest Of All Time" There will never be another one.
Howard Cosill never liked Muhammad.
That's because Cosell had seen from up close what Ali had once been capable of, and with a monster like Frazier looming next, he also thought Ali was in over his head. He was, only temporarily right. Ali proved his magic despite this erosion of skills
@@Liston3270Ali whipped his ass stop the madness
Is Ali the BLACK one??........there's your answer!
Saludos desde Argentina!!! El país de Bonavena 🇦🇷
This just confirms what I thought even back then. Howard Cosell talked just to hear himself and really had no clue.
It was Bonavena’s conditioning that determined the result. He came out in Round 15 staggering around on dead legs and then walked into a left hook that probably would not have landed when Oscar had better balance.
Why did Ali not go to neutral corner ? Like dempsey and Tunney ? Sheer exhaustion best oscar and what a sad death
If its not his balance its his left leg or his big head lol
They call it the distance.
If only the commission shut the mouth of Bundini it would have been good to watch.
no 8 second count after the knock downs, one of Ali's dirtiest fights using elbows and clinches but one has to say a worthy opponent and resurrection of a legend .. R.I.P. Champ
Bovavena hug that whole fight Ali had to push him off all the way to 15 then lay him out 3 times, go to sleep Ali the Champ
Hypocritical comment..😅
Boxers back then were dogs. They had to be or you got put to sleep. RIP CHAMP...
Talk about hostle announcers. Yancy calling him Clay and never saying anything nice. Cossell ragging on Ali constantly and not announcing any of the excellent punches (ie 6th round).
Complete bias by both commentators
At that time, racists and people who hated Ali, used "Clay" to dig into him.
When you look back Howard wasn’t so great a friend. Ali said he wasn’t going to move so much this fight. Howard asking why he’s not. Yancey is just FOS
WTF is Howard talking about? Ali is doing exactly what he said he would done before the fight
@@JbJohnson-fb8fjHoward constant flow of bs. Ali fightly exactly how he said he would. Surely Howard heard this
Ali still ddmonstrated how he can slip punches and clearlyoutpointed Ringo in every round.
Best thing Cossel said was "l don't know , lets watch it " 😊
If ever there was a man with natural star charisma, it’s Ali!
RIP.
Great fight Ali vs Ringo Bonavena
Sometimes you can’t see Ali’s punches connect but Ringo’s hair flies back from the concussion. You can especially see it when the camera is on Ringo’s back.
Bonavena walked into that left jab. Can't imagine how that felt.
It floored his a##
Amazing how he didn't get knocked out earlier. He walked into Ali's left several times and yes, it had to hurt. He showed a lot of heart.
1:09:35 the way Ali moved refs hand like “fuck outa here coach” had me dying 😂
Ali was honest man who said he got nervous before every fight but could he take a punch from all the best.
Except when getting floored by Cooper and the corner cheated . didn't know what hit him.
@@bobbrowne3027whatever hit him 'Enry's hammer, he got up made it too the corner, where Angelo Dundee/corner men did a fantastic job reviving then Ali proceeded to end the fight the next round
Thanks for the video, BOXING LEGENDS
Ali never went to a neutral corner after any of the knockdowns. Dempsey lost the second fight because of this yet Ali did it 3 times. Do you think they will now correct the error and give the fight to Bonavena?
No standing 8 count in those days? And 15 rounds! Wow!
Watching this with tears in my eyes that Ali lived before my time.
Rip+ GOAT❤
Mahumeď ali is avery good fighter god bles him richly and greatly thank u
muhammed Ali
We didn't know it at the time but Ali was using this fight as a sparring/training session for his first fight with Frazier in three months. The man was incredible.
Real Men!!!!
Real Champions!!!❤️❤️❤️
This is amazing stuff!! Oscar was a real character and an incredibly tough man. Died a violent death at the Mustang Ranch brothel when he was still a top ten contender.
What a legend he was
How about those back to back left hooks that set him down!
Brilliant thanks for posting 😍
“And Howard cosell is agitating as usual “. Lol
Ya think?
10:10 *Bonavena looked like ROCKY BALBOA right here!!*
Ali was a master marketer. Master marketeer who could also back it up.
He was a legand funny
Dos buenos boxeadores siempre recuerdo ese momento y gracias a adiós por permitirme. Estos momentos tan inolvidables
Tough Battle in that ring Oscar's
Style of fighting was wild, but
They both gave all they had
.
Both so respectful of each other
Ali looked so lean, great !!!
All his fights that stiff left hand just making peoples head rock back the whole fight lol
….side note I watched a lot of his fights lately and I noticed he has to be the guy with the most rabbit punches ever committed against him one fight the guys was hitting him in the back of the head every other damn punch maybe that’s what really caused his issues later in life all those shots to the back of the head this guy Oscar did it to him also
If I was ali, I would have never talked to Howard Again
They liked each other...
In this fight Ali was fit, he weights 212, but he couldn`t show his skills. But the Cossell report was horrible, not neutral.

Wrong Sorry. You are so biased
Not neutral, Cosell wanted to have Ali's child
Cosell was always giving Ali a hard time every chance he got lol
Do get the feeling cosell wanted to see Ali lose lol
I loved Ali. The Greatest of all Time.........
Yes. I back up all comments about ali and a true artist. In motion some lighter weights come near but never match him
Ali said he would fight flat footed
before the fight
Cosell was a moron just running his mouth because that is what he was good at. Did he not listen to the pre-fight conversation?
Ali ravaged by 3 @ a half years layoff. Still an Ali fight always entertaining. Just no legs left after exile. Stamina an issue that never was before. ,,Cosell is good but oscar would've been destoyed by pre exile Ali. Round 15 so exciting,,tells me oscar would've went down early to pre exile Ali
amazing athletes that commentator on the phone stirring it with Joe
Significant as NO ONE ever beat Ali at his own game getting under the opponent’s skin except Bonavena.
I disagree. The white media used bonavena as a hate mechanism and Ali still prevailed! Btw Howard Cosell wanted Ali to lose as well. I never liked him.
Howard Cosell, the master of the two faced, backhand compliments.
Oscar was a funny guy , a good showman ... but a crazy one too.
He could not box with Ali lol
He was quite a character all right. He was reportedly shot to death at a brothel called The Mustang Ranch by the owner’s bodyguard in the 1970s and having an affair with the guy’s wife.
Thank u verry much MUHAMMAD ALI
WOW. Crazy. Destroyed in the last round
That was the Rocky script.
A lacklustre fight , until the final
minute of the 15th , when it turned to pure gold .
The Greatest , no doubt .
Not For Ali. They say Perception is Reality but only for the Crowd
Ali would have never won a single round against Tyson, Holyfield or Lewis.
