Great vid, only note is that most throws can be sidestepped now. Basic throws (1+3, and 2+4) are still homing as well as select throws on certain characters but most command throws lost tracking as of 1.05.

@@regachref9952 nope there are only very specific command grabs like hwo`s 2 grab that kept tracking. Most of the ones that track are generic grabs (1 or 2 break, doesnt matter)
Funny story: I had a friend that plays Lidia and has been playing Tekken since at least early Tekken 7. I started playing Tekken 2 weeks ago. When I first started, he was bodying me and was clearly having a good time. I was pretty frustrated at how he was just mashing strings and still winning. I made it a goal to beat him. Started watching videos like this along with ones specific to my character, watching replays and good players on youtube. Practiced with some Ruler rank players in the fight lounge. One week later, my friend was at Vanquisher rank, and I reached Garyu. We played. I absolutely destroyed him. He got passive aggressibe and was asking about Lili's Feisty Rabbit stance. I told him it was a low crush. He said it was a low parry and accused me of gatekeeping information. He was clearly salty at how I so quickly surpassed him, and now whenever he sees me play Tekken 8, he just gets off and plays a different game to avoid getting invites from me and doesnt talk to me anymore. Never really said what he wanted to say, was always the passive aggressive type. Happy I'm done with him and the victory tasted so sweet. Big thank you to content creators like yourself and the new friends that practiced with me

You’d think your “buddy” and I use that term loosely, would’ve hid offline for a day or two and hit the practice or even watch the replays and figure out how you’re winning and perhaps compete. I understand it can be frustrating to lose to a character you don’t like. I hate playing against Victor, Alisa and Larrs, but that’s because I’m weak against them. Horwang used to give me big trouble, but I’ve gotten a lot better against him. You gotta take those ass whoppings in order to get better!!

It''s so sad that you have to deal with this type of "friend". Tekken 8 is my first Tekken that I tried competitively, and I got a friend who played every tekken since Tekken 3, and he encouraged me to try this one out. After half a year of training, I'm a Mighty Ruler, He's a Tekken King. We spar on some evenings and yeah 9/10 times he beats me but we're still having some good old FUN! And I feel like I'm improving facing him. He recently debuted on the big TWT challenger event stage in the UFA tournament and watching him live I was shouting like crazy in support of my boy! I'm so proud of him. That is what true friendly sportsmanship is about and I hope everyone can experience it.
Here's an advice from someone who got stuck in red for a long time: new players should try to win until 10-14 Dan or orange rank using only safe moves and basic punishment strings as taught on this video. Get a good habit of attacking only with safe moves (poking), block/keep range/sidestep the opponent attacks, and punish in time. Continue with unsafe string only after your punishment lands (hit confirmation). Don't start using big moves or combos. This is because while it's very easy to use your big moves and launcher + combos at lowest ranks where people rarely block and mostly just mash, it's a bad habit and you will get punished doing that even in mid rank when people actually starts blocking. It's actually the fundamentals that will carry you further, so having a good habit from the start is better than having to unlearn bad habits in the middle. Combos are useless if you can't actually launch your opponent. Memorize combos later after you can consistently launch or counterhit enemies at red rank. Learn spacing, blocking and punishing etc first. I wish I knew this before I have 100 hours of bad habit I have to unlearn to progress. Edit: As user c16621 below clarifies, hit confirmation can apply to any string. I recommend reading his explanation below.

Have fun and take risks are my 2 main bits of advice. Yoshimitsu players have showed me that if your tempo spacing and moves are "off" you can break the mind of any tekken player. You don't need a flow chart, you just need to win, and there's many ways to do that.
MK1EG Here. Make sure you watch your replays to see what your struggling with so you don't feel lost, also making note of your most negative moves can help along with what your plus on to help set up pressure will really go a long way.
Some standard throws side switch when broken which means throwing your opponent can be a useful tool to get out when you're backed into a corner. Nice work on the video btw.

I've watched many videos like this one and generally disagree with them for one very simple reason: What many consider "Fundamental Knowledge" is really just a demonstration of superior Tekken experience. Of which Newbies will never have starting out. However, this video does a fantastic job of keeping the strategies very simple and generic without too deep of an experience pool. For instance, you mention offensive sidestep, but didn't even try to touch defensive sidestep, which is great advice. Newbies shouldn't be doing that when they don't know the matchups yet. They should at least have an idea on all the other topics you brought up. I think this video and document do a great job about that. My only criticism is NOT mentioning combos. What good is reacting to the snake edge, landing a counterhit or forcing a whiff if you don't know or drop your combo after the launch? I'd go so far as to argue it's one of the most fundamental systems to understand and become proficient in as a newbie. It's where the vast majority of damage comes from. It requires 0 experience to be proficient in, instead just requiring practice. It's an absolutely required skill that applies and carries you at all levels of play and in every match. It's ultimately what determines the entire balance of the game's risk and reward. Too many content creators like to pretend this isn't an important aspect of the game or treat it as some kind of trap. But I'm here to argue: It's the most important. I don't care how good you get in everything else, you won't make it far in Tekken without a solid grasp of the combo system.

Great guide, thanks! Quick tip on countering King grabs, you don't have to time your counters right, you can just keep holding the button. If you hold 1, you will break the chain when it can be countered by 1

Amazing vid man! Like others here, this is one of the best fundamentals vid I've ever seen. Well done 👍. Only thing that I would add is to do these very same drills on the opposite side of the oppenent as well. That way, you can also get used to doing inputs in the opposite direction. Took me a long time to get used to the right side.
Here's a good tip: take it slow and take breaks often. A large part of improvement comes from thinking about the game instead of actually playing it, oddly enough. This video is fantastic, I'm coming from Street Fighter right now, and some of my legacy Tekken knowledge (12 year old mashing) is lacking, and this helped bridge some of the gaps in my knowledge!

This video is so good that I have to share a suggestion for a future one. So in the video you mention the well known chart on Reddit (and elsewhere) that has either SSL or SSR next to each character, which is of course to suggest to beginners which direction is best to default to sidestepping against each character. But I for one have no idea how people actually come to that conclusion, character-by-character. I mean, I know Kazuya and Reina (and I assume Heihachi) are weak to SSL, but I don’t specifically know why that’s the case. If you did a video just reviewing the chart and talking about why they might have said left or right for different characters and/or exceptions for specific moves, I think it would be an amazing follow up to this video. You could call it something like “the only guide to sidestepping you’ll ever need” - hyperbolic title of course, but I think it would be incredibly useful for a lot of people, myself included.

Ayy yo this is some goated tekken shizz right here also, just wanna give some advice that helped me alot: speedkicks has said - "don't press a button for no reason". so whenever you decide to press, there has to be some purpose for it. if you wanna overcome autopiloting and situations where you think "what am i doing???", then you should start taking this saying to heart. this will lead to you pressing less buttons cuz sometimes you dunno what to press, but blocking is gonna be way safer and is never a wrong thing to do. defending and thinking is better than attacking without thinking.

Something I want to add on to the already very detailed video is: Make sure you're looking for patterns/habits in your opponents offence. A good example is, a lot of Paul players will throw out moves that create a lot of distance on block like QCF1, and then just use their DF2 launcher while you're moving back in to take your turn. If you're studying your opponent's patterns, you can poke holes in their defense and even launch them if you're aware of what your opponent is about to do. Sometimes interrupting their patterns is the most advantageous thing you can do! Always be aware, and never fall into the trap of going on auto-pilot when playing Tekken.
Just to double down on distance. Moves propell you forword. Be on the look out for moves that close the gap to your opponent. Not just the while running moves. Some moves like Zafina's d3 or Jins d2 will end up pushing you pretty far forward. This will catch a lot of people off gaurd if they don't know that they were going to move that far. Just be careful since those kind of moves will leave you pretty minus or in a bad position if you whiff or block (depending on the move).

A quick tip for the people in the begginer ranks like orange and red. Stop trying to go for launchers every second. Beginners underestimate the neutral a lot. As a raven main I am fortunately blessed with a character with great neutral but still most characters have decent neutral and that's where you can truly condicion your opponent and set your pace through the match

Okay, question for the Tekken 7 players. I see a Tekken 7 oki guide linked in the document - are there any notable system changes between grounded/getup mechanics in 7 and 8 that would affect what I take from a Tekken 7 oki guide? The reason I ask is that the way oki and waking up in Tekken/SC works is definitely one of the things I’m having to sort of unlearn and relearn coming from 2D fighting games - not just how to apply oki but also like the Kazuya 50/50 oki does not feel intuitive to defend against - meaning if there’s a really thorough Tekken 7 oki/wakeup guide that applies just as much to Tekken 8, no reason to reinvent the wheel. But I also don’t want to take anything to heart and find out it no longer applies to Tekken 8, so I’m curious. (Fantastic video btw!)
Pro tip: When you're sidestepping, confirm your whiff and THEN punish. If you sidestep into buttons, you cut your movement short in addition to expanding your hurtbox. Moves that should have missed you will end up counter hitting you instead
A trick to get while standing every time for those who are getting crouch jab or leg poke is to either press or hold back while standing to get your desired input
Remember guys when facing a strong yoshimitsu player and they start mixing their attacks you have to first go defensive and then offensive (When doing kinchi and other change of stances you can attack them and win the interaction)
The new lingo for While Standing (WS) is While Rising (WR). Its the direction that the devs are going and its what makes sense for new players. The only players that don't like the new notation are legacy players. But you know.. out with the old in with the new
definitely going to be trying to offensively sidestep as it seems a lot safer than my current way of beating mashing which is to do an unsafe CH launcher which is like traditional frametraps from 2D games.
I hope the offensive side step works for you in the future and it annoys your opponent and it gets you more wins and it feels really cool to do as well. I hope your next ranked session goes well and thank you for the comment :D
Some advice from a Fujin/blue rank player: even at this level 90% of players are overly aggressive and just press their buttons in combo strings that they love. If you start back dashing or blocking a ton their whole game plan falls apart as they start to get impatient or frustrated. Also tons of players will use gimicks: keep playing enough and you'll notice specific characters will spam or do the same gameplan cause it works
Hey Yamato! I play Kazuya as well. Got a question for you. How are you getting your electrics to come out so consistent on demand lol?. Is there like a trick to it or something to make them come out easier? I was able to get to Mighty Ruler without being able to do a single one, and I've been labbing electrics for months now. Can't seem to get them down, feels like I'm missing something. If there are any other Kazuya players out there that can give me some tips I'd be grateful as well.

Here’s an advice: Players in red and purple ranks frequently use throws, so learning to break them is crucial. Not only does this allow you to react and counter their throws, but it also helps you develop the habit of paying closer attention to your opponent’s moves. I’ve been practicing throw break drills for 60 days, and it’s finally starting to pay off. Remember, if you can’t break throws, you’re giving away free damage. 😊
12:12 if the low is super minus like snake edge you have time to dash forward out of crouch and do a standing move like electric but highs might whiff since the stagger animation leaves them close to the ground so kazuya youd want to just take ur ws2 but a heihachi god would do omen to punish that
If you're playing against Lars, land jabs when he's switching stances, there's a short window when he's vulnerable and a Jab can cancel his stance making it useless
I subbed because you're awesome and I hope you can make me better at Tekken. I'm pretty good at most fighting games but in Tekken people just step on me and make fun of me - it's probably one of the more miserable games to be bad at honestly.

just a heads up if the low is minus enough, you can crouch cancel to get more damage with the punish eg hellsweep blocked into crouch cancel electric. crouch cancel done perfectly is only 1f so u can get a lot of different punishes depending on the situation.

For instance, you mention offensive sidestep, but didn't even try to touch defensive sidestep, which is great advice. Newbies shouldn't be doing that when they don't know the matchups yet. They should at least have an idea on all the other topics you brought up. I think this video and document do a great job about that.
My only criticism is NOT mentioning combos. What good is reacting to the snake edge, landing a counterhit or forcing a whiff if you don't know or drop your combo after the launch? I'd go so far as to argue it's one of the most fundamental systems to understand and become proficient in as a newbie.
It's where the vast majority of damage comes from. It requires 0 experience to be proficient in, instead just requiring practice. It's an absolutely required skill that applies and carries you at all levels of play and in every match. It's ultimately what determines the entire balance of the game's risk and reward.
Too many content creators like to pretend this isn't an important aspect of the game or treat it as some kind of trap. But I'm here to argue: It's the most important. I don't care how good you get in everything else, you won't make it far in Tekken without a solid grasp of the combo system.

Great guide, thanks! Quick tip on countering King grabs, you don't have to time your counters right, you can just keep holding the button. If you hold 1, you will break the chain when it can be countered by 1

Amazing vid man! Like others here, this is one of the best fundamentals vid I've ever seen. Well done 👍. Only thing that I would add is to do these very same drills on the opposite side of the oppenent as well. That way, you can also get used to doing inputs in the opposite direction. Took me a long time to get used to the right side.

Here's a good tip: take it slow and take breaks often. A large part of improvement comes from thinking about the game instead of actually playing it, oddly enough.

This video is so good that I have to share a suggestion for a future one.
So in the video you mention the well known chart on Reddit (and elsewhere) that has either SSL or SSR next to each character, which is of course to suggest to beginners which direction is best to default to sidestepping against each character. But I for one have no idea how people actually come to that conclusion, character-by-character. I mean, I know Kazuya and Reina (and I assume Heihachi) are weak to SSL, but I don’t specifically know why that’s the case.
If you did a video just reviewing the chart and talking about why they might have said left or right for different characters and/or exceptions for specific moves, I think it would be an amazing follow up to this video. You could call it something like “the only guide to sidestepping you’ll ever need” - hyperbolic title of course, but I think it would be incredibly useful for a lot of people, myself included.

also, just wanna give some advice that helped me alot: speedkicks has said - "don't press a button for no reason". so whenever you decide to press, there has to be some purpose for it. if you wanna overcome autopiloting and situations where you think "what am i doing???", then you should start taking this saying to heart. this will lead to you pressing less buttons cuz sometimes you dunno what to press, but blocking is gonna be way safer and is never a wrong thing to do. defending and thinking is better than attacking without thinking.

Something I want to add on to the already very detailed video is: Make sure you're looking for patterns/habits in your opponents offence. A good example is, a lot of Paul players will throw out moves that create a lot of distance on block like QCF1, and then just use their DF2 launcher while you're moving back in to take your turn. If you're studying your opponent's patterns, you can poke holes in their defense and even launch them if you're aware of what your opponent is about to do. Sometimes interrupting their patterns is the most advantageous thing you can do! Always be aware, and never fall into the trap of going on auto-pilot when playing Tekken.

Just to double down on distance. Moves propell you forword. Be on the look out for moves that close the gap to your opponent. Not just the while running moves. Some moves like Zafina's d3 or Jins d2 will end up pushing you pretty far forward. This will catch a lot of people off gaurd if they don't know that they were going to move that far. Just be careful since those kind of moves will leave you pretty minus or in a bad position if you whiff or block (depending on the move).

A quick tip for the people in the begginer ranks like orange and red. Stop trying to go for launchers every second. Beginners underestimate the neutral a lot. As a raven main I am fortunately blessed with a character with great neutral but still most characters have decent neutral and that's where you can truly condicion your opponent and set your pace through the match

Okay, question for the Tekken 7 players. I see a Tekken 7 oki guide linked in the document - are there any notable system changes between grounded/getup mechanics in 7 and 8 that would affect what I take from a Tekken 7 oki guide?
The reason I ask is that the way oki and waking up in Tekken/SC works is definitely one of the things I’m having to sort of unlearn and relearn coming from 2D fighting games - not just how to apply oki but also like the Kazuya 50/50 oki does not feel intuitive to defend against - meaning if there’s a really thorough Tekken 7 oki/wakeup guide that applies just as much to Tekken 8, no reason to reinvent the wheel. But I also don’t want to take anything to heart and find out it no longer applies to Tekken 8, so I’m curious.

Pro tip: When you're sidestepping, confirm your whiff and THEN punish. If you sidestep into buttons, you cut your movement short in addition to expanding your hurtbox. Moves that should have missed you will end up counter hitting you instead
A trick to get while standing every time for those who are getting crouch jab or leg poke is to either press or hold back while standing to get your desired input

The new lingo for While Standing (WS) is While Rising (WR). Its the direction that the devs are going and its what makes sense for new players. The only players that don't like the new notation are legacy players. But you know.. out with the old in with the new
definitely going to be trying to offensively sidestep as it seems a lot safer than my current way of beating mashing which is to do an unsafe CH launcher which is like traditional frametraps from 2D games.

Some advice from a Fujin/blue rank player: even at this level 90% of players are overly aggressive and just press their buttons in combo strings that they love. If you start back dashing or blocking a ton their whole game plan falls apart as they start to get impatient or frustrated. Also tons of players will use gimicks: keep playing enough and you'll notice specific characters will spam or do the same gameplan cause it works

Hey Yamato! I play Kazuya as well. Got a question for you. How are you getting your electrics to come out so consistent on demand lol?. Is there like a trick to it or something to make them come out easier? I was able to get to Mighty Ruler without being able to do a single one, and I've been labbing electrics for months now. Can't seem to get them down, feels like I'm missing something. If there are any other Kazuya players out there that can give me some tips I'd be grateful as well.

Here’s an advice:
Players in red and purple ranks frequently use throws, so learning to break them is crucial. Not only does this allow you to react and counter their throws, but it also helps you develop the habit of paying closer attention to your opponent’s moves. I’ve been practicing throw break drills for 60 days, and it’s finally starting to pay off. Remember, if you can’t break throws, you’re giving away free damage. 😊

12:12 if the low is super minus like snake edge you have time to dash forward out of crouch and do a standing move like electric but highs might whiff since the stagger animation leaves them close to the ground so kazuya youd want to just take ur ws2 but a heihachi god would do omen to punish that

If you're playing against Lars, land jabs when he's switching stances, there's a short window when he's vulnerable and a Jab can cancel his stance making it useless

just a heads up if the low is minus enough, you can crouch cancel to get more damage with the punish eg hellsweep blocked into crouch cancel electric. crouch cancel done perfectly is only 1f so u can get a lot of different punishes depending on the situation.
