  • As a complete T6 paraplegic I show you how I transfer around my bathroom.
    From wheelchair to toilet to tub to wheelchair. And why I have a tub bench that attaches to the side of the tub, facing backwards ;)

    Amazing, I've been using a wheelchair for 22 years, have enough feeling in my legs so I can swivel myself onto an adjacent surface using my left leg, but I never dared to use a wheelchair without brakes for transfers. Hats off!

    I am amazed at your upper torsel strength. I am weak on my left side and have difficulty pushing off onto another surface. You are encouraging & amazing. I've been paraplegic for five years❤😊

    Tanelle, I have a silly observation. You say, "Since I hurt myself." You did not hurt yourself; it was an accident. I love your videos. HUGS from Austin, Texas.

    As a 31 plus year T4 myself I would encourage any spinalcord injured person to ALWAYS protect your feet. Shoes also help balance while sitting up wheather in or out of your chair or couch etc. If you spaz and a bare foot comes off of the footrest then drops you could jack your foot/ feet up pretty good.
    Lol NOT speaking from experience.

    I learn more from watching your videos than I learned from hours of therapy in the rehab hospital. How often do you have to tighten your toilet seat fasteners? I notice mine do tend to get loose.

    • @ProTipsForParas
      @ProTipsForParas  4 роки тому

      At home I have never had to tighten them. I don't land very hard often, which is usually what causes the bolts to loosen, or if this happens often they seem to lose the ability to stay tight for long.
      I had to have my dad tighten the one in my hospital room after my last surgery though. It was a friday when I needed to use the toilet and was told by the entire nursing staff that they would put a maintenance order in and the earliest it would be tended to was monday. They did not care that it was unsafe for me to use being loose.
      Long story...

      @@ProTipsForParas I loath hospitals and just how rude medical staff can be. I know some people do really care and want to help, but others just hate their job and treat you like you are a burden. Thank God there wasn't too many of those.

      Hi D., about fasteners, the toilet seat comes with two plastics fasteners, change them with two metal screws and bolts, think they are 3/8 or 5/8". Go to HomeDepot and get them, then tight them real good.

      There's a slit in the seat that the clear plastic shower curtain liner slides through. I have seen benches with a bit wider space that allows the curtain proper space (on google images, one time)

    Hi Tanelle, I have a question. Why don't you use your other w/chair, it has break. You are putting an extra strain to your shoulder by try to keep your wheelchair close to you and you don't need to do that, you need your shoulders for the long haul as a wheelchair user. With the brake you only need to worry about your xfer to the bench or toilet.
    Also, you can attach a piece of velcro to the front of the chair, the side that hits the toilet, this way you protect your chair and the toilet from leaving marks on it. I learned you are in Canada, can you get in Canada a different bench shower. Take a look at this one in amazon.com "
    Drive Medical Padded Seat Transfer Bench, Gray"
    then you will put it together so you face the front of shower, or shower control.
    You can also install the following for the toilet:
    Stainless Toilet Safety Rails, WochiTV Handicap Grab Bars for Elderly, Steel Flip-Up Bathroom Grab Bar.
    You don't need to make life harder, it already is. I don't know if you have access to this equipment in Canada. I've been living in w/chair since, 1993 (T7/T8) and I have learned from PTs here in the States and other users. I know you didn't ask for my opinion, however I am thankful to those that give me a useful tip.

    • @ProTipsForParas
      @ProTipsForParas  4 роки тому

      I prefer the seating position of my new chair and have not yet put breaks on it. If physics is applied properly it is no more strain on your shoulders then with breaks.
      I like my bench backwards so I don't have to transfer into my chair between the toilet and shower.
      The velcro is a good idea, but I don't like that it would touch public toilet seats and collect germs.
      I have as little medical devices in my bathroom as possible. I do not use grab bars in most cases, again because they're full of germs, nor do I need them when transferring.

    I LOVE that bath bench! Where did you get it? I have this one, that I modified with longer poles in the middle and cut it down because apparently it was made for the Jolly Green Giant 🤣. I mean honestly, I have a standard height toilet and at it's lowest setting, this was at least 6" higher than the toilet! Talk about splash back 😂. www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000NGUD94/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    I know you said you have 'lordosis' or something in your back..but just to let you know, your back looks way more indented (is that the right word 🤔) than it did before the surgery.

    • @ProTipsForParas
      @ProTipsForParas  4 роки тому +1

      The bench was made to order from drivemedical.com
      They put rods in with a greater curve, good eye.

    • @morgancalvi6675
      @morgancalvi6675 4 роки тому

      @@ProTipsForParas why would they do that though? They normally put rods in to make the back straighter, don't they and wouldn't these greater curve rods mess with the lordosis going on in your back already? I have yet to go through a lot of spinal stabilization surgery for my injury (C4 incomplete-C5 and C6 and L1-L5)...so just wanting to get to understand spinal surgery...and yes, my injury was some 30 years ago. But I never had corrective surgery, just cervical traction. However a nasty bone infection just made it all worse.
