A word of advice from a hair dresser here, if your going to cut and style your wig at home I’d recommend taking your thinning shears to the ends and point cut! You will get the same result but it will be more forgiving until you get used to it. Point cutting with a regular shear can take more hair especially if not cutting at the right angle!!! You did a great job, just some advice for newbies ❤

Don't worry about the length of your tutorial videos. We are watching to learn and appreciate your time to show us. My Mother is a hairdresser and I grew up in a beauty shop. I like the safety tips you give. My Mother has small scars on certain knuckes from cutting hair these many years. The 60's were a decade where almost every woman wore wiglets (hair pieces in the crown) and wigs. I washed and set so many of these for years..........I still get nervous trimming my wigs whether it is bangs, length, volume, etc. . .Your advice to go slow constantly evaluating your progress is so important. Especially the anxiety I feel when cutting a favorite wig.......my anxiety can make me want to rush or not take time to section off the hair. So pick a day when you are not hurrying or with constant interruption. If you begin to get frustrated, stop. Take a break......come back to it. Take as long as you need to succeed!! As you have mentioned, have all your tools out and ready. I clip the hair clips on my clothes, put a baking apron on so I can put my scissors in 1 pocket, comb in another pocket. The less you drop things off the counter onto the floor will help to lessen frustration and feelings of being overwhelmed. THANKS for ALL your videos. You want all of us to succed and it shows!!

You did a great job. I've been working with wigs for 35 years and it's been a lot of trial and error teaching myself the techniques you've shown in this video. I can't believe you've only been doing this for a few years. You're really good at it. There's only thing I would add, instead of cutting the hair off the weft, use thinning shears to thin out the individual wefts, raking out the cut fibers so you can see how much more thinning needs to be done. Like you said go slow, pause and assess. I enjoy your videos very much.

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  Рік тому +10

Thank you! I debated about showing the thinning shears version... that is definitely a good option!! I will probably do a video focusing exclusively on the different ways you can thin a wig... and how I approach curly and straight wigs differently. I appreciate your support and viewpoint as a VERY experienced wig wearer. I am definitely still learning but this is such a passion of mine that I am FORCING myself to fast track that learning! I spent so much money in the first year on wigs that just didn't work for me... but the benefit was that I learned SO MUCH. I call it the time I spent getting my Masters degree in wigs!
      HUGS!

    I really love your videoes!
I have been a wig wearer off and on since my 20's, I'm now in my late 70's, and for the last 15+ years have worn them daily. But as much as I love the luscious auburns, brown's, and blonde's I need some grey to make it believable.
I love that you are so open about hair loss and that you are willing to share your tips and techniques and products with other "wig sisters".
I would love to see more headband and hat styles in greys. Living in FL where it is warm most of the year and sun protection is suggested in the form of wide brimmed hats, it becomes a challenge to enjoy a day outside in the heat knowing you'll have to layer up.
Thank you so much for sharing.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED about this Denise!! I’ve been (trying) to be patiently waiting for this video😄-I figure it may not only help me with cutting these long Amazon wigs, but perhaps give me(us all) some pointers and confidence IN GENERAL when it comes to cutting our wigs. Because you know, when they start to get ratty on the ends a lot of us want to salvage them to stretch their wearability by cutting off that stuff and just sport a shorter version to get more worth out of what we almost thought was a throw-away wig. As a matter of fact, something like that might be a very good idea for a separate instructional video for you to consider doing if you deem it practical and/or a subject not yet addressed. You might even expand it into a mini-series OR just do a few different ones over time to cover how to shorten a straight, a long (covered today), a curly, an already short??, and maybe a shag/uneven/razored ends (since razored ends have been abundant for a number of years now and since shags are just now coming INTO the fray of popularity?)
Anyway, I can hardly wait to watch THIS video so, I’ll close for now and get to it but before I do can I just thank you in advance? I can only barely IMAGINE what all is involved - how MUCH thought & EFFORT, and just your TIME must be involved for you to create and present us with allllllllllll this INVALUABLE(!) information , and it is TRULY a PRiCELESS GIFT that I WISH all of us could at LEAST personally hug your neck for🤗🤗. You HAVE and you ARE fulfilling your goal of being a loving sister in Christ who just-so-happens to wear wigs. I FULLY BELIEVE that if it weren’t thru wigs, you would answer the call of duty in the same church, just different pew. lol I for one have grown to appreciate you so much, and I KNOW I am not alone. Even though I haven’t met you in person, I almost feel as if I have and I want to tell you:
“You are treasured” and “You are trusted and appreciated”… “THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION TO US & HARD WORK”… “I, and I know “we”, love you❣️❣️”
(Okay, nowww I can watch this video!😂) 😘

Thank you so much, Julie! Videos like this DO take a lot of time... I probably have 5-6 hours into this video between practicing on the first wig, filming this one which took about 2 hours in total, and then editing it so the video would not be 1 hour long (the original was about 58 minutes long which would NEVER fly here on UA-cam so I had to edit out some to shorten but had to be careful not to edit out anything important. Reviews are often SO much easier (unless it is a difficult wig like the Envy Isabella which I just finished and will be putting out later this week, that one took me a few hours to figure out the best way to show it and talk about the challenges with it). Hugs my friend!

@@heywigsister I BELIEVE IT!! But you are MUCH faster than I would be- I am SERIOUS… it would take me a number of DAYS to research, map out, do, film, edit, etc a video like this. Omg, I cud NEVER do even a REGULAR one, much less a demo. You did grrreaat!😄👍
Oh, listen- Remember that Amazon headband wig I told you about that I found around the same price point as this one but I think is BETTER?? Well actually, it IS $15 higher in price… why, I’m not sure unless if it IS quality to some extent?? Anyway, I’m leaving you the link here to the curly long one that I purchased 2 of since I liked it so much and have not altered them at all so far because it works SO perfectly as an updo headband wig. It’s called “Arianna” by the brand: ESPECIALLY YOURS.
      (below)
      www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B096GZTN4L/ref=ox_sc_act_image_3?smid=A17GTMHRIFJU32&psc=1
I even wore it down one day despite the fact that it is really longer and more dramatic(fuller/bigger) than I normally would feel comfortable with as passing off as age-appropriate if you want to get technical about things… (and I usually do🙄😅). I originally had been thinking about cutting one of them shorter to wear down all the time (like just below or above my shoulders), except
I just now realized that if I think it’s too “Big-hair”-looking now… what on earth can I expect it to look like in shorter/boxier form?!!🥴😳🫣🫤-- NOPE. Absolutely “NOT.” Thank GOODNESS I hadn’t ruined a perfectly great wig by doing that! I’ll just leave it as is for a backup when my 1st one wears out. The 2nd link I’m leaving you below is an OTHER headband wig that I currently have on order and am waiting to receive it. Judging by the ends of it in the stock photo- I plan on cleaning those up as best I can but otherwise leave it alone if it fits. I don’t think it has the additional Velcro strap which is GOOD as far as I’m concerned because they are more trouble than they are worth. I don’t like them. I will let you know what I think of it after I get it.
It’s a 14” headband wig simply called a “Mixed Brown /Short Wavy Bob Headband” wig by a brand named: HALCYON.
      (See below):
      www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B097GS4HJY/ref=ox_sc_act_image_4?smid=A2KHO1YSOJJP9S&psc=1#
I REEEALLY believe with all my everything that you would absolutely LOVVE the Arianna because of it’s curl pattern, and you don’t have to do anything to it. My wig circumference is exactly a 22” also. Not sure what it is over the top but wud guess it’s smaller rather than larger.
I’ve always worn the Arianna with a hairgrip , a single piece of wig tape at the nape, and then my own colorful headband OVER the attached headband and usually all of that made things a bit too tight around my head but I have always overdone it with securing my wigs. And that is the toned-down version. I’m pretty confident that it can be securely worn on it’s own without ANY tape, glue, or grip.
Sorry for such a lengthy comment. I just wanted to make sure I followed thru with telling you everything I promised I would. Have a good week Denise!👋

Your wig head may be wobbly because the holder peg on the wig stand is smaller than the hole in the wig block. Use some moleskin and wrap the holder peg to increase the diameter until you get a very snug fit for your canvas block. Then make sure the holder peg screws are good and tight.

I know this is an older video, but just a few things: gorgeous hair by the way. I'm guessing the costs are low because of the simple construction. I'd be inclined to do this on every second weft after the first one, separated into equal size sections all across, the same number on every row, an odd number. Then alternate your cutting as if you were knitting or crocheting. Start the first weft by passing over the first section, and cutting the second, so that you finish off by passing over the last one as well. This is so that there won't be an odd space at the bottom of your hair when you lift it. Then on the 4th weft, start by cutting the first section, and finish by cutting the last section. Then the 6th, start by passing over the I'd also do this: when you get to the part where your head would naturally round out, heading up to the crown, cut the sections alternating in the same way but leave some length, an inch maybe, to create some height at the 'roots.' You'd need to finish with an intact weft, so that if there were an even number of rows, this would mean 2 intact wefts. It may not come out quite as thin, but might prevent some visual wefting this way. Lastly, do the point cutting with a 2" to 3" blade; the scissors are a bit long.

Thank you for sharing. It was very informative and I appreciate the professionals sharing their comments. My only suggestion is you don’t need to be so hard on yourself, stop apologizing. We know you aren’t a professional hairdresser and are just sharing your personal experience. This was great! Thank you.

Denise thanks so much for this request. I love these wigs and I have purchased two. I am thinking of ordering ash blonde, gray silvery white and highlighted blonde. They are like hair candy. I have not seen these colors in person yet so I would love for you to review any or all of these colors. I love your videos and watch you more than anyone else. You do a great job. Jill

Good Job! I enjoyed watching you take command and getting to it! And yes, the thinning shears are amazing to thin out those bottom layers, or even run thru the under-layers for shaping. I try never to cut the very top layers near parts, or the crown. That way you always have hair to bring down in case of an opps and no short hairs sticking out. Nice tutorial. Many blessings to you.

I just received my Sapphire headband wig yesterday from Amazon in Mix Brown. I can't believe the quality for this low price! I will be using your tips to make it a little (or a lot!) shorter - the longest my bio hair ever got was about 18-20 inches, so I'll try to get it closer to that. Thanks for the recommendations, Denise!
