Denise, I love your words of encouragement in this wig world. They can be fun, challenging and frustrating. But you make it so doable. And I just love your confidence when you whip off one wig and plop on another! Yeah, just like a pro.
Great job, Denise. I particularly liked how you kept it simple and only incorporated a few techniques to get a desired result. Because the white woman world of wigs has changed over the past five years with an increasing abundance of UA-cam reviewers now offering their tips on how to modify a wig, it is easy to watch a lot of videos and get overwhelmed on where and how to simply begin. This post, in my mind, demonstrates some basics and repeats the important tenets: go slow, always check your hand to make sure you have the right scissor for what you’re trying to do, leave the top layer of fiber alone to cover cut lines, know changing a wig is scary but necessary because wigs rarely come out of the box without needing some work to make it work for your face shape and features. xo
Hi! I am new to wigs, I just got my first human hair wig which cost me a couple of thousand dollars. I’ve taken it back to wear I got it to have it thinned, I feel it is still to much hair for me. Which wigs do you prefer synthetic or human. What is a good site to get more wigs and not pay a fortune for them?
Your videos are so darn helpful!! plus you pick really good wigs that really complement your face. Recovering chemo gal here, I am trying to figure out how to work a few wigs that I will need to get me through my regrowth journey. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO
I just got Envy by Gabor and, for me, it has a lot of hair. I thinned some at the front and it makes a big difference! Thanks for making this video so I can learn more.
This was great! Definitely could see a difference at the end. Your videos are ALWAYS helpful. Love that you take however much time you need to give us a clear understanding of what you're doing and why. Many thanks to Kathy for providing her Shayna for this. And, as always, appreciate all you give of yourself to help your wigsisters. 🤗💖
Hi there, I'm finding this video quite interesting, i'm loving this idea, but even though this seems like a very good way to thin this wig, the way you are thinning it, is just thinning off the lower end pieces, shouldn't you thin out some of the upper areas as well? I mean just under the top layers.
To digress from wigs for a minute, your teeth are so lovely, do you home bleach? If so what do you use? Still researching my first wig (been a while now). I’m still confused about what I need vs what I like………..think kanekalon synthetic (the most realistic?) is what I will buy first but they don’t say what synthetic fibre they use?
I saw the color at the end. Thank you again for showing the pics with the names! This video was very helpful! I’d love to see a video on thinning a long straight hair piece, if possible. 😊❤️
As always, excellent video showing how to make wigs your own. Great tips. Sugar brulee is a beautiful color. Thank you Cathy (I think that was her name) for providing the wig for demo. I'm sure she will happy with it once done. Steaming will definitely help with lift at the front. Do you have a recommendation for a wig stand? The one I bought, that looked heavy duty on Amazon, ended up breaking in half on one of the legs.
Aren’t you going to end up with a large volume of hair one inch from the cap? Wouldn’t the ends poke up all around? Is it better to cut next to the cap?
Do you have a video on how to blow dry/style hair off the face (lift in the front)? You mentioned it in a video that you have a video. I can’t find it.
Here is one video I did on this: ua-cam.com/video/QS6Tn13prnc/v-deo.html and here is another (not quite for getting lift in the front but similar concept) ua-cam.com/video/qaVLJ-nIPA0/v-deo.html. How well this works will depend on how much lift you need. If you need A LOT then you are better off using steam. I will be showing that in a Tip Tuesday soon!
So helpful!! You’ve eased my fears about thinning, especially for curls. Did you ever steam the bangs on her wig? Love ❤️ how your Shana turned out, especially with the lift of the bang! Such beautiful curl pattern! Thanks sister Denise ✝️❤️
Thank you so much! I didn't steam them, she said it looked good the way it was. I will DEFINITELY get a steaming video done, though, so that I have that to refer to in the future. HUGS!
I do! Cutting bangs into any wig will depend on how the front lays. Sometimes if the front has a lot of lift or some wave/curl, it will be hard to get the bangs to lay flat without taking heat to them (steam if it is a regular synthetic). Here is a video I did showing how I cut bangs into a wig: ua-cam.com/video/HjHNkzFK-og/v-deo.html
Loved your video. My wig is so full in the back and my bio hair is thin so my wig doesn't look right. It has lots of permatease all around. It is color me beautiful by Paula Young. I had my beautician cut it shorter because it laid too long on my neck. She did some thinning on the sides that looks great but now the back is so full. Do I need to have it thinned or wait to let it relax upon wearing it. Thank you so much for your time you share with us.
If you can afford to give it time to see if it will relax I would recommend doing that. You can certainly thin it, but it will still relax over time and the risk is that it will relax too much and then it will seem too thin.
I do show how to steam in 2 videos, but will do a dedicated video on this topic soon! You can look up Denise Sheets Kristi project to see me steam a wig or wait for my new video.
I loved the instruction . Wow, lots of hair.. I thought it looked like the angle you used to thin was backwards looking..maybe try different angel to switch the camera lens look..like you were driving in UK instead of US.. turning camera to opposite image might look easier.
I have searched and searched for your review on Essence from TWC. I saw a brief video and you said it would be released the next day, but I have had no luck in finding it!!!! Did you ever release it?
Oh my gosh, I completely forgot to upload it! I have put a few things on Instagram and then spaced UA-cam. I'm so sorry... it is filmed I just haven't put the outside and inside pieces together yet. I will do that either tonight or tomorrow morning and I will get her up TOMORROW!
Hi, Carole! Take a look at this blog post that I wrote.... go down to the secondary market section of the post, these are the places where I find used wigs (and also where I sell mine if they don't sell after posting to my website): heywigsister.com/resources/f/trustworthy-websites-to-purchase-wigs-from
Hi! I talk about Permatease toward the end of this video ua-cam.com/video/zujqRLhbedA/v-deo.html (look in the description for timestamps and you can skip ahead to that part since this video is long). Human hair wigs DO NOT have permatease, and neither do many budget friendly synthetics.... not all synthetic wigs have it, and unfortunately to only way to know is to either find a review where the reviewer talks about it (I talk about it in every one of my reviews, but tip videos like this I would not necessarily mention it) or to buy one and see for yourself... they do not mention it in the descriptions at the retail sites.
I would do it the same way, but put it on a mannequin head so that you have more control and can see what you're doing. Put it on periodically to make sure you don't thin too much since it will be hard to tell on the mannequin head.
When I decided to thin my wig, I said “I’m going straight to Denise! She would never steer me wrong!”
Denise, the "how too" was very informative. However, when you took off the wig, for merit was a very moving moment. My hair looks the same!! Bravo!!!!

Thank you!!
I prefer the brown one , very curly and beautiful
Do you have a video on how to steam the front
Shana is a fabulous girl. I’m adoring this texture, length and cut on you!
Would love this one for me, too!
Just that little thinning you did
made a lovely difference In the
Curly style that it is. You are so thorough.
Thank you so much for watching!

Can you steam permatease down?
How to know if your wig has a lot of permatease?
Your are amazing! Thank you so much for this video! I’ve got got several wigs I need to thin and this helped me so much on how to do it!💕💕
YAY! I hope you have great success and are able to get them into a place where you love them!!

Thank you so much for your guidance!! It's been a life savor!❤
Denise, if I don't feel comfortable thinning and trimming my wig, do you have any suggestions for a type of professional to do it for me?
Thank you so much for this video, very helpful
What do you steam with?
Great help!!!!!

Is the technique any different for thinning out the back to reduce the poofiness? Thank you.
I've messed up a few Permateased wigs. They ended up looking like a Rug! 😂. Wish I knew, maybe going way under the top layers. Great Video
Oh no! The lessons we learn, huh?
Hi! I'm new to wigs. Your videos are fab & you are adorable!!! Where can I find this particular wig you're wearing?? I've searched and searched.
Keep up the good work.. you are doing great....God bless have a great day.....
I have a showroom here in South Florida. I think I'm headed in to see Milano in person :)
Do it!! I would LOVE to visit a Milano showroom in person, that would be so fun!
Do you have a video on how I can cut bangs into longer layered wigs? Is it possible to do that or do you advise against it?

Loved the demo! Thank you for sharing! I need to get some thinning shears for some of mine! I love the color of Shayna! What color is this?
Walnut Brown

Hi Denise,
I liked your tutorial. Very helpful. Keep making these videos.
Thank you, I will definitely do that. THIS is where my heart is!
How do you keep the wig on your head while you are thinning and pulling the hair out
