The improvements in continuity between 2 and 4. 4 really feels like a proper sequel to 2. He has a character of getting over his trauma and also other details like the use of Marvin’s knife that gets brought up. His opening monologue is actually personal. In the of four it was kinda just a recap of the of trilogy but now it’s more so a check in with his emotional state since time has passed.

The remake is just a completely different character, I can’t get behind New Jill. They even add a layer to her character by giving her PTSD from the mansion incident but this is soooo wasted. Not only is her only fear just basic zombism, no nightmares of the mansion or any other creatures in it, but it’s dropped and never even hinted at through the rest of the game. She’s an action hero again with no signs of fear for 6 hours straight. To the point where when she IS infected, she has NO reaction to this at all.

The much needed added context of Krauser and Leon’s relationship is also pretty great too as it makes their final showdown feel like it means something. In the OG, it felt like it was supposed to be a plot twist when they never added any sort of hint at it. The remake does this relationship justice and actually makes Krauser feel more human.

  • @holder_mr7843
    @holder_mr7843 11 місяців тому +36

I gota disagree on the Jill "improvements" she is more of a badass in 3make, but i think that's missing the point with Jill. She was set up to be the smart resourceful one, and that you don't need to be a mega badass to get the job done. In a franchise where pretty much everyone is physically a badass by punching boulders and round housing infected cult leaders, its refreshing for someone who cant rely on their prowess and have to think outside the box. Also calling Nemesis "fuck face" and "bitch" just to add to the persona of Jill being more badass is just cringe, and it shows the lack of respect and reverence for one of the best monsters of the franchise.

    • @falloutrapture7232
      @falloutrapture7232 2 місяці тому +3

@holder_mr7843 Yes, Jill seems to have been written in originals as this woman who has vast combat experience and is the more resourceful one/who keeps people on track, such as outside of mission where people like Chris Redfeild tend to goof off or not take things seriously but be serious on missions, she still has fun but has a professionalism aura to her. She is not rigged military though. She does have her hobbies and passions but she is not getting in trouble with the chief like Chris, Joseph, or Forest do. She knows that stopping and reacting to something in combat situations can cost time energy or your life so that's why there are not a lot of one-liners or quips from her. However she is still human and some situations can get the best of her, or when something doesn't stay dead. The schooled expression and the cold fury she has when she chooses to let you know she is truly angry Ex: "Wesker you're pathetic." Is also a nice contrast to say the less experienced Claire Redfield or Rebbcea chambers during their early days in the series.
Remke Jill seems to unfortunately fall into the modern-day troupe of to be a badass, you have to constantly cuss especially at your enemies, and be anti-corporate or something else and announce it aloud to the people who represent that very clearly so that it can't be missed i.e "Well you can thank your corporate overlords for that." line, which is ironic because Jill is a former army and still a cop.
I think it also doesn't help from what I heard Jill's new voice actress improvised some of her new lines which kind of pulls Jill into a more 2020 dialogue range rather than what her character would say in 1998. Also, I feel like if take Jill's new personality and dialogue and compare it to other modern female action leads or those who are considered badass you're gonna see a lot of overlap and lack of uniqueness with Jill's character.
Also with the dog scene from the remake, she just unloaded an entire magazine into those dogs trying to save Joseph and they didn't flinch at all I can't blame her brain for being like I need a moment logic isn't logicing.

    • @Young8mvp
      @Young8mvp 2 місяці тому +4

I agree. I also think her trying to initially save Dario & optionally going back for him is pretty badass. She took out the grave digger and survived multiple attacks from Nemesis without any help. If memory serves, all of the times Carlos actually helps her in the OG are optional depending on your choices. Plus, her final line to Nemesis in the OG is way better than what she says in the remake, it's not even close.
Carlos is better in the OG too. His accent was awesome, his part in the hospital was way more enjoyable IMO, and if you choose to have him help you against Nemesis outside the clock tower, his barreling into Nemesis and his attack cry was awesome. The way he blew up the rocket launcher after Nemesis took a shot at him was one of my favorite parts of the game, and I played that a bunch back on the PS1. Maybe it's being picky, but I also can't stand his hairdo in the remake. The dude looks like he's never had a haircut in his life and it's just ridiculous.
I honestly don't think anything about the remake was better than the OG, and I am quite certain I'm not the only one who feels that way. I love the OG RE4, but I can admit that some things in the remake, such as the ability to be stealthy, are an improvement and add something different to the game. The RE3 remake was a total disservice to the OG and is the worst RE remake of all, and it's not even close. They shouldn't have done it, I feel it is totally inferior in every single way to the OG...

Jill’s dealing with the aftermath of what happened to her in the mansion, and now she’s fighting to escape Raccoon City. She’s getting out of town or dying trying. She’s done with the city, she’s done with Umbrella, she’s done with everything and out of fucks to give by this point.
So having her as a changed woman between the first and third game makes sense. She’s broken and now it’s a case of wanting it all to just go away.

I mean, we got Nemesis from the get and having to escape the apartment building while it just destroyed any wall or floor in its way. But I liked the 3 remake. My only gripes were no diner fight, no clock tower fight, and Nemesis should have been more relentless in the first act until the rooftop fight where it finally took significant damage and was forced to regroup. I was fine without running into the latest unintended side effect of the T virus finding its way into some random insect and making them some giant monstrosity and definitely fine without the constant backtracking the original had. The remake just needed a bit more Nemesis presence to make up for the difference, although I still don't know why they'd not include the diner fight. It was already a nerve wracking fight of claustrophobia in the original. Remake could have made it so much better.

They removed any trace of Jill's caring personality and simultaneous "break bones if you make her mad" attitude. What do you mean she didn't have any interesting comments? I LOVE the new version of Luis, so it breaks my heart even more to know that such a great character will never have another chance in Resident Evil.
As for Mr. X and stalker enemies in general, it's been really effective for me so far. Mr. X was the first one I had to deal with in the RE2 remake, because I never played the old games before and almost the entire first playthrough was a mix of sneaking around and intently listening to these damn footsteps.
The same thing happened with Jack and he was also really scary. Lady D however could've been as glorious, but for some reason I never really met her all that often, like maybe twice o my first playthrough a few days ago which was kind of a letdown.
Overall Village is still a good game and I still have lots of fun with it while I get the platinum, but it definitely peaked with the castle for me and after that it was a bit too much action.

RE3R ruined the dynamic between Jill and Nemesis. In the original he was a terminator style enemy that was on a mission and would not stop until that mission was completed, the mission being to kill all STARS members. In the remake the way Jill interacted with him reduced him to being a creepy stalker enemy, and that last voice line at the end with the railgun really points to that.
They did not change their dynamic for the better, but rather for the worse.

The changes they did to Ashley I felt were one of the better improvements to RE4's Remake myself. She feels like the appropriate age they were shooting for ( around 20's ) where in the original she felt like a 14-16 year old. I also felt that her character development was hugely improved as well. When you first interact with her she is tariffed, like a scared child. But as the game progresses she does grow much more confident. The little banter tossed between her and Leon as they travel also adds to her and Leons character rather well. Shows that Leon is really good at keeping his cool when he needs to and can even help lighten the mod when they do catch a break as they progress.

The sympathy garnered for Marvin was truly a heart wrencher. He definitely deserved better than his fate in my first playthrough. Just got back from the sewers, half expecting him to be a zombie, then I see him. I'm on the stairs, he's coming up to me and with my last shotgun shell, I figured I'd give him a quick send off, rather than a slow one with the knife since I had no pistol ammo. So, I aim and... He moves at the last second. I tore half of his face off along with his arm and had no real ability to finish him off. I wouldn't get the opportunity to finish him for quite some time due to Mr. X hunting me down, and when I did, he still grabbed me and I had to stab him anyway. I felt absolutely horrible.

Chief Irons was actually worse and more creepy in the original. You actually confront him in his torture room in the sewers during your final encounter where he has taken and killed multiple women, he is a full-on serial killer with a taxidermy obsession. He was more subtle and creepy when you first meet him in the original before his true colors are revealed unlike in the remake which goes 0-100 in his first scene. Also, I don't think he is a pedophile he is just a murdery taxidermist whose victims are the mayor's daughter's age and appearance. Quote from a file "8 people have gone missing. Strangely, the missing people have a lot in common: They are all single white females aged 18 to 23 with beautiful blonde hair." from Resident Evil Outbreak Racoon today file. He also during og resident evil 2 hunted down his fellow officers in the station such as shooting one through their back into their heart and watching them bleed out, from the chief's diary re2 1998.
Irons in 2 remake is evil, but it's a more obvious and in-your-face evil while the original is slowly realizing oh god I'm dealing with a psychotic monster.

I do like Carlos from RE3R, which is why I hope as more RE games get more remakes, I hope they give Carlos more screen time in the future, I liked him in the OG RE3 game, but he was a lot more likable in the Remake, I also liked the tie in with Marvin being bitten by Brad, instead of it being some civilian, and Brad's last little gasps of humanity was a bit heartbreaking when he said "Sor-ry" to Marvin. Like the last bit of humanity left in Brad knew what was going to happen, and it almost seem poetic in a way, cause you get a sense from Brad that he still feels bad about bailing on the other STARS members during the events of RE1. But other than those two things, Carlos, and the Marvin and Zombie Brad altercation, I can't stand RE3R.

The crimsonhead detail is interesting to me from a lore perspective, because like... the early games having 'zombies' and them being bullet sponge enemies are memeworthy things, well-known historical parts of Resident Evil/Biohazard games... but crimsonheads remind you that these ARE NOT zombies--that's just a name for them. These are genetically altered mutant supersoldier creatures, inhuman abominations made by using humans infected by a lab-grown virus as an incubator and cocoon both that slowly transforms their corpse into a shambling, but eventually deadly, creature. These things can become lickers, and THAT'S a whole new nightmare. But the retroactive addition of crimsonheads to RE1R was a solid improvement, both in terms of the lore of Umbrella's nightmare factory and in regards to not just the survival-horror action gameplay of the first title, but the strategic conservation and planning side of the game as well.

Who did Chief Irons kill in the original Resident Evil 2? As far as I remember the only person he threatened was Claire only to end up dead. And if it was the mayor's daughter, she was already dead as far as I can tell. Unless you are referring to what is told about his past in the book by S.D. Perry.
As far as what I think were the best changes the remakes did, here's my list:
    10. Making the Yarn and Neptune enemy/boss scarier (RE1)
    09. Addition of Lisa Trevor (RE1)
    08. Expansion of Luis (RE4)
    07. Making Ashley less annoying (RE4)
    06. Less quick-times (RE4)
    05. Making Krauser knife fight an actual fight rather than a quick-time event (RE4)
    04. Giving characters the ability to use knives and other stuff as defense against bites (RE2)
    03. Over the shoulder camera (RE2)
    02. Mr X scarier pursuer (RE2)
    01. Better inventory system (RE2)

There was some journals or something in the OG, if not the novels, that mentioned Irons ahem, abused a woman, got off because of Unbrella, and was on their payroll. He definitely had a thing for hunting and killing things and it was mentioned during the outbreak he was actively hunting officers and civilians seeking refuge. So he was already horrible in the OG, I guess in the REmake it was more pronounced with his creepiness.

  • @7_Siete

    I agreed with everything... except...
Hell naw, I disagree about Jill, completely.
She's my favorite alongisde Leon, and I think there's a misinterpretation about her calmness, in RE1R she takes Barry's magnum and confronts him, she is definetly not a pushover, she insults Wesker and stands her ground, in the beginning of RE1R she is actually so shocked about what she's seeing she is pulling the trigger on her empty handgun, she has a lot of empathy. Also she curses at her radio for not working lol. Barry helps her a lot but it makes sense because this is her first time facing the horrors of BOWs.
In original RE3 Jill is angry and does confront Carlos about being with Umbrella, but decides to trust him anyways because of her good heart. She even slaps him to get him out of a panic, and tells him panicking won't be of any help. She is far more serious in this game and doesn't seem to be affected by fear anymore, she takes smart decisions and knows when to retreat but has no fear to stand her ground.
In Revelations she makes some jokes to Parker, even shows to be sad about his apparent death. Makes some jokes about the chopper guy when he gives her a rocketlauncher "You know how to treat a girl!" This shows she's got a sense of humour and can be quite playful if she's comfortable.
In RE5 she jokes around with Chris but it was cut (Tells him "he likes them young" lol), makes jokes with Josh when he calls her pretty (she tells him something like "Bet you say that to all girls").
Jill is just calm/quieter in her original timeline, but she does have a personality, I just think due to her being a quieter person she can go unnoticed a little bit.
I also think whenever she is in Chris' presence her personality becomes duller.
In 3 remake she just swears a lot more, is a lot louder... and I honestly hate that. Gladly she didn't lose her empathy and we can see it with Carlos and with this guy that Nicholai shoots. I still prefer OG Jill.

Crimson Heads being added to the Remake retroactively makes RE2's Lickers seem less out of left field when it was finally revealed that they were "evolved zombies" as we get to see the start of transformation process with the elongated claw like finger bones and increased speed and aggression after falling dormant for only a very short time. Its highly likely with all the missing person reports mention in the intro of RE1 there would be zombies wandering the mountains after the mansion incident slowly changing in the month or so between then and the city outbreak.

A few of my favorite changes from each remake:
RE1. 1. The Lisa Trevor story was a excellent if not tragic addition to the RE series and went a long way towards helping the remake stand on its own.
    2. The crimson heads were by far the best addition to the game and ultimately changes how you play once you know they're there. It is one of the reasons I consider the remake to be superior to the original.
RE2. 1. Leons character is so much better than in the original. Leon not only had TERRIBLE writing and dialogue along with everyone else he also was so insanely naive that it reached a level of absurdity by the end, the remake went a long way towards having Leon still be a rookie but not so naive that he feels down right stupid at times especially with regards to Ada.
    2. Mr X. The fact that Mr. X now chases and follows you everywhere truly makes him the most terrifying thing in the game by far. Just hearing those footsteps even when he's nowhere near you is enough to make me consider turning and running.
RE3. 1. Carlos. Carlos was a nothing character who may as well have not been in the original game at all but the remake completely fixes this. Remake Carlos is a cool dude who genuinely just wants to help but doesn't realize how much he's being used and manipulated. Considering a lot of this game happens alongside RE2 I think it's appropriate that his arc in this game is very similar to Leons in that game.
    2. Nikolai. In the original Nikolai kinda just seemed like a generic villain all things considered, and I'm not saying he's not generic in the remake but he FEELS more unique and charismatic to me. This may be more to do with the actors performance than anything else but either way Nikolai is a much better character here.
RE4. Ashley. Pretty much everyone agrees that Ashley was not a good character in the original game, in fact I didn't even know that she was supposed to be a 20 year old college student until about a month or so before the remake came out because she always acted like a spoiled 16 year old in the original. Ashley still has moments like that in the remake but they're more subtle and MUCH more realistic than before. Simply put, I was glad we never saw original Ashley again but I'll be sad if remake Ashley never comes back.
    2. The controls. I never actually beat the original RE4 before, I've watched it be played several times but I've never been able to beat it myself because I can't stand the controls. Modern controls was one of the main reasons I enjoyed the remake so much, a game I've wanted to play for years was finally playable for me and I had a blast playing it.

Not sure I agree with n°9 and 6.
Brad Vickers had a much better death in the original RE3 and introduced THE Nemesis in the best way possible, talking about a mysterious threat hunting down STARS members and a little while after that scene he's running terrified towards Jill trying to warn her about the mysterious monster and was suddenly killed by it in front of Jill.
As for the Mr.X Tyrant, can we really call it an improvement when the Claire/Leon campaigns (both scenario types) are the same with insignificant differences for the B scenario?
No matter the "scenario", the encounters & deaths of Mr.X Tyrants are the same. While I'm here, why giving the creatures a fedora? It doesn't make any sense, at least its clothing actually had a purpose as a "power limiter" of sorts.

Disagree with Brad. His death at the hands of Nemesis upset the tension of the monster (in addition to some mentions of other offscreen STARS jobbers being killed off) and is still an emotional moment as Jill is forced to watch her friend die. Admittedly it would be much better if she ruminated on his death later, after the shock of it and the situation wear off.
In the remake, Nemesis only kills the Umbrella mercs when he should be concerned with Jill at the front and nobody else. Brad’s moment could have been given to another character and is a little out of nowhere considering we haven’t seen anything like it in the series (talking about verbal discussion here, not notes we only read after the fact). Not to mention it should be Jill witnessing this and not Carlos.
Jill is better in the original too.
