  • Showing how to replace the thermostat on a Mazda 3.
The thermostat in my car was stuck in the open position, causing the engine to warm up slowly. This is especially problematic in the winter time.
In order to get to the thermostat it is best to first remove the belt tensioner.
Do not forget to collect the old antifreeze and dispose it appropriately. Antifreeze is harmful to the environment. So it is best to give it to a recycling center close to you.

This is how a tutorial should be done. Nice step by step progress without a lot of wasted talk.

Great video, very clear with good pointers along the way. I usually clean the area around the part being taken off. That makes sure the surfaces are mostly clean before installation of the new part.

When refilling coolant just make sure to set your heat to hot and blower on so get all air bubbles out.

    Great video thankyou!
I am about to change mine because my reservoir tank got a bit crack, and so I changed that but now the car has a problem with overheating after ~5km.
Does changing the thermostat seem appropriate?

    • @MegaSafetyFirst

      My thermostat failed being open.
In that case it took a long time for the engine to warm up during the winter months. But other than that I did not notice a difference.

    • @mjacobson
      @mjacobson 10 місяців тому

The top hose is called the "water hose" in the 2010 Mazda3 workshop manual. You are correct that the lower hose is called the "lower radiator hose".

late response: but yes. Otherwise, your alternator will be drowning in coolant...instead of a small splash.

    • @irish6976

The Mazda 3 and 5 share basically the same engine and parts. This type of code, is rarely seen in summer or hot temps, but once the weather cools off, it can show up. Usually its the thermostat failing to close fully, other times it can be the coolant temperature sensor is bad or simply out of range. It is CRITICAL to resolve this code! The Mazda 3 and 5 both have oil and transmission coolers that use radiator coolant to regulate their temperature. Also, usually on many later models, the throttle body is also heated by the radiator coolant, to prevent freeze or lockup in the winter. Also, if the engine runs too cool, you can have carbon build up in the engine since the engine is not at the proper running temperature to prevent it. When this code (P0126) is thrown its a good time to inspect all of your coolant hoses and parts in your coolant system and make repairs. On my Mazda 5 I found the oil cooler was leaking oil due to a bad seal, the bypass hose was at end of life, and replaced the TStAT and several radiator connecting hoses. Would have done more, but Mazda International uses a lot of pre formed hoses, a lot of which are just not in stock. Mazda has been terrible about parts availability for all of the custom hoses they have wrapped around the engine bay during and after the "Pandemic".

Jesus H Christ people, when making videos and discussing a very common model like a Mazda 3 that has been in production for a long time, PLEASE mention what year model you are talking about.. trim level also may be helpful.
If you don't mention this information prominently you are cumulatively wasting massive amounts of people's time looking for the right information. They could also follow the tutorial and get stuck halfway through because something is a little different for their year model.
