  • It has needed this for a loooooong time!! Since this is something that usually fails on the Mazda 3, I decided to make a video on it. I hope this helps and enjoy!

UK here. Having just done this on my '06 3 Sport (as the 2.0l is called here) your old one was the original Mazda part. Replaced it with a Ford part from a main dealer's discount outlet on eBay. No FoMoCo on the 'stat as yours but a genuine Ford part, made in Mexico, packed in Germany, same cost as reputable aftermarket one.
    Some tips:
You don't need to pull the draincock out, just open it first then get on with removing the tensioner
A bungee cord holding the belt to the bonnet/hood keeps it on the pulleys and out of the way
The lower 'stat bolt is a lot easer to get at from below
The locking tab on the larger hose clip stops it opening fully. A squirt of silicone oil lets it slide up the hose easily
Clean the mating face carefully with a Scotchbrite pad or fine emery cloth depending on the deposits
Check the seal is properly seated in the housing
Loading the lower bolt into the 'stat before offering it up makes things easier
    Torque figures are 'stat 8-12Nm/6-8.5 ft-lb, tensioner 19-26Nm/14-18 ft-lb

Does not apply to 3rd gen and later Mazda3s. I changed my thermostat yesterday on a 2014 Mazda3 iTouring with 2.0 liter engine. The thermostat for 3rd gen is located on the driver's side near the fuse box and control modules. I removed the battery to get a little more room. It was tight but with a small 1/4 ratchet with 8mm socket you can remove 3 bolts and then pry out the old thermostat with a long flathead screwdriver or similar.

Please mention prominently the year model you are working on. This goes for any repair video but especially for a car like the Mazda 3 that has been on production for 20+ years and 4 major revisions

Have the exact model year mazda but the belt is too tight to remove because of some other issue like tensioner bolt etc i cant fix right now due to lack of time. Is it really necessary to remove the belt or just makes easier to do the job? Thanks

How many miles did you have when you did this? Im at 126k doing the coolant and was debating on changing the thermostat.

Hi Freemarkets1236, the engine/thermostat had 136k miles. The only reason i changed it was because it was sending incorrect readings to the cpu but it never would overheat.

Oh ok. Yeah I think I'm going to just change the coolant and wait till about 200K before doing a full overhaul with the thermostat/water pump / hoses. Everything appears to be working fine.

@@Freemarkets1236 thats what i would do. My issue that i an having now is even after replacing the radiator and thermostat, when you drive it overheats. At idle, it doesn't. Really weird. I think my waterpump is going

You should show the year and engine size, just stating "Mazda3" is fairly useless.

It's not that bad considering it'll probably need to be replaced on once, possibly twice in the life of the car. On the Ford version in the Focus etc the tensioner is replaced by the steering pump IIRC.

I ask for 2011 Mazda CX9 touring thermostat replacement and it goes to a Mazda3

That is weird. Wonder why youtube directed you to here for cx-9? Although, if it has the 4 cylinder, it could be similar?
