I was EGO's biggest fan until about a year ago. I've never had any trouble with all of the equipment I bought. But their refusal to fix their battery quality control problem has me slowly moving away as I buy new equipment. They are killing their own Golden Goose with their behavior here.

The quick summary is they Suck!! The following would be a similar encounter I had with them back in 2019.
I had a brand new Gen-3 7.5ah battery go bad almost 13 months after receiving it in 2021 as a gift from a buddy of mine that knew I had EGO equipment and knew I had went thru hell with them just to get them to replace an in-warranty battery before.
I believe I used this battery for as many as 20 times from a full charge until it was down to it's 20% battery level. Now the battery goes to red on a full charge within 2 seconds and and in any of the 3 EGO devices I put it in: the Blower, the Walk-Behind 21" and the String Trimmer. I called EGO' Customer service and explained it all to them. They wanted me to produce a receipt no matter what, which, of course I couldn't since it was a gift and had explained that to them at the beginning. Now what?
So the 1st time I went through an in-warranty battery replacement with them they made me take pictures of the battery and all of my EGO products, from every angle and making sure the pics had clear, readable serial numbers in the images, as well as making me turn my house over to find the receipt. What a nightmare. I finally provided them with what they needed, in all of their attempts to shirk their warranty, and finally received a new replacement after about 5 weeks, back in 2019.

It seems like since about 2019 the batteries are hit and miss. I use the stuff commercially, but have been since 2013. The older batteries lasted 3 years or more with commercial use. Now I'm lucky to get more than 2.

@@gandalf6923 it the receipt process that they require. When you buy their products with a battery included in the sale, the receipt does not include any mention of the battery. Of course they'll replace it under warranty, aren't they legally required to since they sold you a product with a stated warranty. Try having it fail one month out of warranty and Ego tells you tough shit. Now it's half the cost of your mower just to replace the battery. There is a reason EVs come with very long warranties on the batteries, because it's not economical to replace them out of warranty, and I learned my lesson the same applies to battery lawn equipment.

Been waiting 4 weeks for Ego to ship my 7.5Ah battery warranty claim...still nothing after 4 phonecalls, CSRs are helpless to expedite the order. Yes, I feel bad for the CSRs. Ego/Chervon (not Chevron!) is a company whose business model is based on selling Chinese quality at American prices.
So I bought a generic Chinese battery for 1/3 the price. Why pay Ego a 300% markup for reselling Chinese crap?
When the mower dies I am done with Ego.

yeah, I have both types mounted on the wall and I typically use the slow charger for that very reason. In my case it does exactly the same. I'm assuming that these batteries has the clock for 1000 days and after that it will show you that it won't charge . But all cells still had 95.5% life capacity. I will not buy a story that lithium battery 7.5ah really gonna die after 2.5 summers of light use. That's just a scamm you to buy another one after 3 years. And I've just checked prices at Lowe's.
Lawnmower with battery and charger $449
    & 6ah battery alone $399
Hey, you know what is my next move?

I've had three returns on the newest generation battery with the energy usage bar - the latest generation battery. The first 5Ah battery (flashed red during use, even though fully charged) within a few months of purchase. Then, about six months later, two more started flashing red during charge and at times during use. This time EGO Australia were slow/not helpful to replace the batteries or even respond. So, my hardware store where I purchased the batteries (and chainsaw/mower/line trimmer) replaced the two batteries from their own stock (the previous generation of batteries are typically better) as well as the CH2100E Standard charger. They know me well there as I run a busy community website that does reviews of equipment at times and promotes local business. My BA2800 battery without the letter T at the end of the model number has run perfectly for 18 months but the latest generation batteries with the T in the model number have all failed. EGO knows about the problems with their batteries and I understand they have replaced the brand of battery internally. However, they are reluctant to let the customer know about the extent of the issues, at least in Australia, that is the case. They actually told my hardware store not to tell the customer about the problems with the batteries... I must say, in years and years of using battery equipment, I've never had a battery fail from Ryobi or Ozito, ever - but three have from EGO.

That shouldn’t be the case if they have a decent battery management system and charger. Even the relatively cheap battery charger I have for individual 18650 cells knows to stop charging when the battery is fully charged. I can leave batteries in that charger for months without harm.
What kind of “safe mode” requires a LiON battery to be drained down to 30% charge and why? There should be very minimal or no phantom drain on a battery in this type of appliance. That makes no sense to me and I am pretty familiar with battery technology.

I had a very similar experience at first. But the warranty replacement batteries lasted less than a year. I had 2 since I purchased 2 tools and the batteries failed at about the same time. One of the replacement batteries lasted less than 8 months, the other lasted about 10 months. Just enough time to get past the warranty period. New batteries are over $150 each. I could buy new tools cheaper. Probably gas tools this time because they are clearly better for the environment since they last longer and don't require toxic Lithium to be mined with fossil fuels and then left in a landfill to contaminate the ground water. It is my opinion that these tools are both a poor choice for performance and longevity but also a poor choice for "going green". I would strongly advice someone to avoid these products.

I had an cheap ebike battery fail when one parallel cell group went to 0v. I replace the failed group with similar rated cells. Fortunately the group was the last and easily removed. While I had the battery apart, I took the advice of another ebike battery builder on UA-cam and added additional balance leads and connectors soldered in parallel with the internal balance leads so that I can check and balance charge the battery externally with an RC charger. RC chargers are capable of balancing much faster than a BMS.
The balance connectors need to exit the battery casing so they can be accessed without having to take the battery apart.
My ebike battery was 10s 6p, so I used two 5s( 6pin) connectors and split it into two groups. I purchased a fancy RC balance charger (ISDT Q8 or Air8) for about $70, that is capable of 8s charging because I wanted to be able to use it on 14s batteries split into only two groups. There is a Q6 version (1-6s) for only $35 that would require three groups.
The RC chargers can easily stop at any voltage level if you are trying to extend battery life by not charging to 100%.
The chargers use an external power supply and can be run off an old 19v laptop charger, or a car battery.
In practice I bulk charge the battery most times and once in a while check it through the balance leads, and balance charge if needed. So far this set up has worked perfectly, and I expect to be able to get a much longer life from my battery because I can easily understand and maintain it.

The thing with ego and any electric product is that you buy it for what it's ACTUALLY good for and not what you THINK it's good for. That being electric products are marketed as being eco friendly but if batteries only last until after the warranty is expired and the cells arent easy to refurbish yourself or no way to take them in to get refurbished youre just creating more waste especially since the tools being plastic wont last for decades either. You buy electric because you want the convenience of doing very little maintenance and with the price of the batteries being what they are its just cheaper to buy a new tool with batteries included every 3-6 years anyway.its a luxury product built for convinience not to save the planet. Once you understand that, then you understand their real business model.

I didn't try to have the rep troubleshoot the problem -- her accent was so impenetrable we couldn't understand each other, which is not her fault. @@dm285 I wonder if the problem is the 56v battery where as most other manufacturers use 36v. The ego has more cells to possibly fail, more complicated to balance as well, maybe more difficult to cool as well. I've got a 2017 husqvarna battery still going strong and it's done alot of work.

Good service is however irrelevant to a battery worth about half the price of a new top of the line gas mower. Furthermore, your warranty is still only 3yrs - **total** NOT per battery. Which means you now have 6mo left on your original warranty. When it dies again in 3yrs... that's 6yrs on your original, now worthless purchase. I've run a basic gas powered mower for over 20yrs with zero problems (until now). I just can't get over the risk of battery failure in comparison to the reliability of gas powered mowers. Can anyone comment?

I have a number of EGO tools. I've had two battery failures (a 2.5ah and 5.0ah of the original generation). Unfortunately, I was lazy and never registered my products for the warranty so I was out of luck there. I ended up buying some knock-off batteries on Amazon that were about half of the cost of EGO products for the same size. And I haven't lost another battery since. I've got a mixture of OEM batteries that came with some of my tools and a few of the knock-offs in 5.0ah/7.5ah/9.0ah. Apparently, you can repair these things as well. At some point, I may try to repair the dead 5.0ah unit with parts scavenged from the other dead battery or vice versa. Hopefully, their latest generation of batteries are better, but there are now aftermarket alternatives as well.

Now if you have to hire a mover or a rent a van and a pair of extra arms to transport your snowblower,, that will cost quite a bit before even having the repair done. Mist lipo batteries are pretty sensitive to how they are stored. And how they are charged. In the rc world its pretty common knowledge to never store a battery fully charged. Actually most chargers come with a storage option which charges it to around 80%. 100% before storage is not good. Also it will drain half of that 80% within a month. Its good practice to put a full cycle through it then charge to 80% again fir storage. Also usually the faster u charge it the worse it is for it. The stock charger is actually the better option if u can bear longer charge times. And u seem to leave it plugged in for long periods? I can’t imagine that is good for a battery. Unless the charger has some sort of smart charge/discharge cycle and doesnt store it at full charge

    • @ReeWrayOutdoors
      @ReeWrayOutdoors  2 роки тому +1

Yeah, these are all great practices, for sure. I do (now) tend to use the slower charger by default, rather than the rapid charger, just out of an abundance of caution more than anything. But I will say the rapid charger does have an intelligent charge/discharge BMS so leaving it on the charger is not considered a problem. Also, it has a very active cooling system to pump airflow through the cells during charging to dissipate heat quickly, so I suspect EOG's rapid charger is not a big a concern for reducing battery life as people might think. That said, as expensive as batteries are, I'm still going to play it safe, haha! I also now bring my batteries inside for the winter so they don't get subjected to frequent freeze/thaw conditions. Not sure how much that helps, but again...better safe than sorry.

These 28 Samsung 3.7 Volt 25R 18650 Lithium Ion Batteries (2500 mAh each) (when connected together) should only give about 52V and 5000mh (5Ah) capacity. Each battery is label as Samsung INR18650-25R. Two groups of 14 batteries (connected in series) are connected in parallel. Of course these Samsung batteries have lower internal resistances whereby they require no "secret cooling wraparounds" as used in the older EGO battery modules. EGO should have use the slightly larger Samsung INR21700-50S with the spec. of 3.6V 5000mAh 35A. Only then, EGO will be able to use the "10Ah" label. But will these 28 INR21700-50S batteries fit inside the present case?

Each battery pack has an onboard BMS that monitors pack voltage and disables charge and discharge outside of those voltage parameters, so at least from a battery health standpoint, I doubt there is any issue leaving the battery on the charger for a day or so after it's been fully charged.

I guess it's a bad day for batteries: Your clock on the wall seems to have stopped at two minutes 'till midnight (Great Iron Maiden song!!!) Time to change another battery.

Hahah! It's actually a bass drum head with a clock design on it from back when I used to teach drumline for a local high school. And I've no doubt that that song was the inspiration behind the choice on where to position the hands. You're the first to notice!

Here is the issue with EGO. You got a replacement battery. You said you were 2 years and 2 months into the 3 year warranty on your original battery. They sent you a new replacement. Your replacement is only warrantied for the remaining life of the original battery warranty....Thats right your new battery is only warrantied for 10 months more! If that replacement dies after 10 months guess what? Your on the hook for the full cost of a new replacement.
How do I know this? I lived thru it. If they issue you a new battery and it dies before 3 years (which is the warranty of any other battery they sell) and you got it as a replacement, its only warrantied for the remainder of the warranty of the battery that died. I don't think that's fair.
From now on, I am buying seconded sourced battery's (knock offs) to replace OEM battery's that die after warranty has expired!

Yeah, you're not wrong. But I understand why the MFG doesn't warranty the free replacement beyond the original product warranty...I don't like it...but I understand it. And I just posted a video where I do get into the consideration of 3rd party (after-market) batteries. I have a couple and they work fine. They're not half the price of the EGO branded ones...more like 66% or so. But for the bigger thing to consider with these after-market batteries is that all the ones I've seen only have a 12 month warranty...not a 3 year warranty. So when you consider that, the decision is a little less black and white. Not saying you shouldn't buy the after-market batteries (and after all, if you have to buy a replacement battery right now, your only option might be after-market since EGO's are out of stock about everywhere at the moment!). I'm just saying people should be aware of the warranty differences. And I've also not had to test the warranty response on these after-market batteries yet either so...that's an unknown for me. In any case, you raise a valid point and I thank you for contributing to the conversation. :)

    Great tools, but goddam.
My Makita batteries from 1998 are still ok. WTF?
