Remember...everything you heard came from just three instrument players and a singer. EVERYTHING. You need to listen to the 'Celebration Day" performance with the drummer's son taking over the chair after his father died young. That is an utterly amazing performance by a bunch of 70-year-olds

Try since I've been loving you, the live at Madison Square Gardens. And before you ask the middle section with odd sounds is Jimmy Page playing guitar with a violin bow.

JPJ was one of the bass players who inspired me to pick up the bass in the first place. For some reason "Ramble On" was the first Zep song I tackled lol.... it wasn't as easy as I'd thought! JPJ did become one of my favorite bass players and still is.
Robert Plant said this was the Zeppelin song he was most proud of. In case you didn't catch it, Bonham was playing a straight 4 beat on the drums, while Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones were playing in 6 time, creating a phase effect between the beat and the melody. And those drum fills....iconic!!!

I too saw themin '69 in Salt lake city in a small venue where they were the opening act for another very good band called "Vanilla Fudge." Zeppelin was virtually unknown at this point and no one there knew anything about them. They took the stage and 4 hours later left it. People would not let them go. "Fudge" came out and played 2 songs and said goodnight everyone since it was now after 1:00 a.m.. Six months later Led Zepppelin was the number one group in the world.
@howardbrown911 my brother saw them in Victoria, BC Canada with the same line up. He said everyone was just kind of walking around , not really paying attention or listening to the other bands , ( it was all "festival seating " in those days, there were no assigned seats.) He said they opened with "Good times, bad times" and EVERYONE just stopped moving and were absolutely gobsmacked by what they were hearing and seeing. He remembered John Bonham holding his sticks over his head when he was doing his bass drum triplets!
“The Guy in the khakis” is Jimmy Page, a Rock n Roll Mad Scientist, a musical genius on par with anyone in music history. Oh yeah, he's a pretty good guitar player as well.
Behind the "side step" is the amazing kick drum beat. Bonham only used one kick drum. It became an inside joke. It is a prominent feature of the first song on their first album, " Good Times Bad Times." Check it out. :)

Yep that drummer, John Bonham was purposely playing off beat. An absolute freak. If you want to see something mind blowing you should react to Moby Dick live at Earls Court. It is essentially a drum instrumental and it shows how great Bonham was...he would often end with bloodied hands as he plays a section of it without drumsticks.
The phone is on the Mellotron because it was originally in a studio where the producer could communicate with whoever is playing it while recording a song. That's what i have heard. You can hear it in the background of "The Ocean" if listen closely or with a headset.

In reality, the term "music video" didn't come about until 1981 when MTV launched. There were channels were artists performed live, The Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and a few others. They primarily aired on the weekends. Groups of the sixties and seventies filmed "Promotional" videos. A few notable ones are "Bohemian Rhapsody" in 1975 by Queen, "Whiter Shade of Pale" in 1967 by Procol Harum, and "We're an American Band" by Grand Funk Railroad in 1973. There is live footage that was released to MTV as music videos.
Maybe even further back- England, The Buggles (per Wiki.) "Video Killed the Radio Star" : "...was recorded and mixed in 1979, released as their debut single on 7 September 1979 by Island Records...". Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.
I don’t know if anybody has commented. But the telephone on the keyboard. Was used to talk to the soundboard technicians . And lighting and laser technicians. Mainly used for Soundcheck before the show .If I’m remember correctly.
55 years ago at 16 years old, I took myself to see Led Zeppelin open for The Who. It was my first rock concert. Zepp did a mix of songs from their first album and soon to be released second album. They actually cut power on them to get them off of the stage so The Who could perform. The audience went crazy and trashed the Merriweather Post pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. This now famous show was the only time that these two bands shared the same stage.
JPJ used a Mellotron on the album recording of this song but used the Yamaha GX-1 here live - a very rare and expensive beast! (Stevie Wonder had two of them!)
Incredible succession of clear chords never heard before; perfect and creative drumming; unique voice... Proud to belong to this generation. Not wanting to be young in our dull and agressive epoch.
In this song John was playing the Yamaha GX1 which was a state of the art synthesizer built as a test bed for future production synths. Less than 15 are known to exist outside of Japan and they cost more than an average house in 1975!
A mellotron combined with a string orchestra was used on the studio recording of ‘Kashmir’. However, at these two shows (the Knebworth Festival that Led Zeppelin headlined on the 4th and 11th of August in 1979) John Paul Jones is seen here playing the Yamaha GX-1 analogue synthesizer.
Drummer here - Bonham’s drum fill you noticed is just good old 8th-note triplets - nothing special there - but he does play them hitting his snare every 4 notes, giving them a syncopated “4 over 3” effect. Pretty cool little musical move, and not too hard to do, for any good player.
This is the song the band is most proud of, & yes they often play in different timing, & make it sound amazing. The lead singer Robert Plant’s vocals aren’t as they once were, he had surgery on his vocal cords, still the greatest singer. He had an amazing range tone & texture. Jimmy Page lead guitarist, my opinion the greatest guitarist ever, he founded the band, & produced mixed & edited all their albums. John Paul Jones on bass keyboards & mandolin, is classically trained & amazing musician. Then we have the greatest drummer ever, John (Bonzo) Bonham. Who sadly passed away in (1980), & the band knew he couldn’t be replaced & disbanded. Each are the GOATS of their crafts, & together the GODS of music, of several genres.
official video refers to a video that groups release on tv music channels to promote the song . these days its more internet . anything live , is usually just that , i live video , unless they use a live video as the official video . which some do
From what I heard, it’s to signal to Jimmy Page the guitarist he’s dragging out his solo to long LOL. Jimmy gets into playing, & sometimes need’s reigned in, but his solos are incredible. I doubt it works, since the band relies on visual signals from each other to certain things, I’m sure if John Paul Jones bass & keyboards picked it up Jimmy would notice.
The telephone was to talk to the mixing desk which was about 150 yards away in the middle of 250,000 people. There were no cell phones in 1979 and the security contingent was massive, so walky talkies were not an option for the sound crew. Walky talkies were illegal in England at the time and could only be used by licensed police and security services. Consequently they would buy their radios in America, where they were cheap and bring them to the UK. The only problem with this was that all US CB radios were fitted with channel 14 crystals. (All on the same frequency) That's OK in the UK because no one else would be within range...except me. I bought a very high powered set from America with me to the gig to use it to stay in touch with my friends if we got separated. However, my radios were WAY more powerful than the cheap little things they gave to the security at the show. Every time I pressed my transmit I wiped out the entire security for the show. Boy were they p*ssed. My antenna was six feet long and I stood out like a sore thumb. They threatened they'd kill me if they found me, so I put it away after having had some fun during the afternoon. Oh, yeah. Zeppelin were really good...😉
Bonham's fills are incredible but the band know exactly where to come in on every bar; feel like I'd need a calculator to figure out where each bar ends.
Now listen to kashmir at celebration day you abviously enjoyed this early version celebration day is when they were a lot older and believe me it's absolutely mind blowing led zeppelin are like a good wine they definitely get a lot better with age they are called legend and quiet rightly great reaction enjoy the experience rock on
Did I hear you say, both six and twelve string guitars? He never switched guitars during a performance to my knowledge.... but sometimes used a double neck which was a twelve string and a six string. On this, he used his six-string Danelectro. :)
Which often JPJ would separately play the & record those instruments, for the mellotron. I believe for Stairway To Heaven he play recorders, to sound like flutes, at the beginning of the song.
On these reaction videos everyone should just react to studio albums. Those are the true versions. You get the song the way the band intended. IMHO. Led Zepplin is the greatest rock band ever.
Do we have another Led Zeppelin song for you to react to?.....all of them. And each different from the last. One thing Led Zeppelin is not is a one trick pony. Enjoy the ride, you'll love it.
@@hans-christianpoulsen4103You are correct sir. Good catch. It was late and I was tired. Mea culpa. This is why I love these threads. It keeps me honest.
I highly recommend you one s another song by LED ZEPPELI: "When the Levee Breakes" - ENJOY :o) And note: they were THE FOUNDERS of Hard Rock, the first band ON THIS PLANET to ever play this kind of music!!!
Welcome to the Led Zeppelin Rabbit Hole. You can chose to go down it and be amazed by the variety of styles and music these guys do or you can move on. If you jump into the hole let me tell you these 4 are GOATS. Jimmy was known as the best guitarist in England and he created the group from the ashes of the band the Yardbirds - a blues pop 60s group. They are know for having 3 of the top guitarists in England. First Eric Clapton. when he left they got Jeff Beck. Then Jimmy. The group imploded in 68 leaving Jimmy with commitments to do concerts in Scandinavia. He got his buddy from the sessions (Session players. If you ever heard Joe Cocker's With a Little Help from my Friends) that is Jimmy playing. Anyway the guy he wanted for singer was committed to open for The Rolling Stones on tour but, told him to see this unknown singer in northern England. That was Plant and he blew Jimmy away. Plant turned him onto to Bonham for drums. The group gelled right away. They did the shows and came back to England as Led Zeppelin. Bonham is probably the best drummer since Gene Kruppa and Buddy Rich from the big band era. He changed drumming in rock. Stunning player. All were the best. Songs you should check out: You Shook Me, While Lotta Love, the Ocean, When the Levee Breaks, Stairway (MSG 1973), Riverside Blues, Misty Mountain Hop, Trampled Underfoot, Since I've Been Loving You. So many more. Look for live because I personally find just audio boring unless I am in the mood. Also doing some of their very early stuff from Danish tv when they first began is awesome. Many people here were around when Zeppelin was at their peak (I was in high school and had all the albums and listened to them all the time). Don't do the Celebration Day 2007until you know their early stuff better. Then you can see just how they were stilll awesome in their late 50s early 60s. You can do Stairway by Heart at the Presidential honors. Many people seem to like it. I don't. I find it over done, over produced ad over board. It would have been so much better if the Heart sisters could have done it with their band and Jason Bonham only. No tons of choirs and silly over the top stuff. Just pure music. And Ann's masterful voice and Nancy's great guitar playing.
Would you please react to I'm Gonna Crawl from 1979? Smoky blues performances by all 4 - Robert's vocals, Jimmy's guitar, JPJ's synths and Bonzo's incredible blues shuffle. Love your reaction to Kashmir!
Hmmm he had a lot of children ; perhaps his wife was due during the tour and he wanted a phone in case she went into labor …. That’s my insane guess for the phone 😂 Any live video from their 1973 MSG show is incredible And I don’t know if you’ve done symphonic metal band Epica but if you want to see a band and orchestra backing them perform with severe lighting check out their 2013 Retrospective video of the song Chasing The Dragon
The telephone may have been a direct line to the engineer at the control desk. If I was playing a mellotron live, I would probably want a technician close at hand.
If you love Bonzo's drumming at Knebworth on this track then check out his performance on Achilles Last Stand which has such a complex (fast) drum part that hardly anyone thought he could do it live, let alone better! Awesome drum performance AND all 4 of Led Zep are at a live peak on Achilles. No weak heels on these boys so enjoy that one too ;) Incidentally I prefer the Page/Plant Unledded version of Kashmir with a full Egyptian Orchestra!
I'm fairly sure this is the final song of the concert too. I like the crescendo they built up to, but i think should've sustained the final chord for longer. Do you react to any Queen? At least they know how to conclude a concert! 😉
I m a 70s rock/hard rock collector, and in my opinion music at this times was more epic and has many more variations everywhere than now, every musician were inspiring , and the singers were the best of all times...the very best of them was Ronnie James DIO (an opera singer Elisabeth Zharoff and many others, and many coach vocals said that..) try with his group Rainbow in 'stargazer' video live 1976 ua-cam.com/video/rVXy1OhaERY/v-deo.html each musician is at the top and what en epic guitar solo with an eastern vibe.........the second greatest is for me Deep Purple in 'child in time' video live 1970 with Ian Gillan on vocals and a beautiful organ, great music and same level of the musicial ua-cam.com/video/OorZcOzNcgE/v-deo.html ...the third is Judas Priest 'dreamer deceiver' live 1976 ua-cam.com/video/Wvlq1F-X6Ko/v-deo.html low at first and after .....and for the end a female singer with Heart 'barracuda' video live 1977 ua-cam.com/video/PeMvMNpvB5M/v-deo.html ..4 of the greatest performance of the 70s, trust me, if you have loved Led zeppelin you' ll cant dislike that, impossible...

Great observations! You definitely keep your eyes open. Well done! 🤘😎✌️
I don’t know if anybody has commented. But the telephone on the keyboard. Was used to talk to the soundboard technicians . And lighting and laser technicians. Mainly used for Soundcheck before the show .If I’m remember correctly.
In addition to the keyboards, JPJ is also playing the bass line with his foot pedals.
Led Zeppelin always said they wanted to be remembered for this rather Stairway to Heaven.
When it says official it is pretty much official! This video is from Led Zeppelin's official UA-cam channel
In case he needs to call the Mellotron repair man during a concert.😊
Spot on regarding Bonham’s drumming, thanks.
1 of the greatest bands of al time! Bonham is undoubtedly the greatest drummer ever. Im so glad I grew up in this greatest era of music unlike today
Watch live from MSG in the US in 1973 just awesome
Drummer here - Bonham’s drum fill you noticed is just good old 8th-note triplets - nothing special there - but he does play them hitting his snare every 4 notes, giving them a syncopated “4 over 3” effect.
Pretty cool little musical move, and not too hard to do, for any good player.
Yes 'Starway to Heaven" live Madison Sq Garden with great guitar solo by jimmy paige.
Led Zepplin never been bettered. Greatest ever.
Opera singer😉 Led Zeppelin….the all time GOATS! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Black Sabbath,Led Zeppelin,Deep Purple the holy triad of rock music🤘
That telephone is for when they're setting up that phone is more of an intercom that goes to the control room it's not used during their performance!
Page´s famous DADGAD-guitar tuning in this song sets the mood and Plants vocals are just supreme, thanks for reaction!
official video refers to a video that groups release on tv music channels to promote the song . these days its more internet . anything live , is usually just that , i live video , unless they use a live video as the official video . which some do
From what I heard, it’s to signal to Jimmy Page the guitarist he’s dragging out his solo to long LOL.
Oh, yeah. Zeppelin were really good...😉
Nice reaction 🤘
Since I've Been Loving You, Live at Madison Square Garden
Which often JPJ would separately play the & record those instruments, for the mellotron. I believe for Stairway To Heaven he play recorders, to sound like flutes, at the beginning of the song.
On these reaction videos everyone should just react to studio albums. Those are the true versions. You get the song the way the band intended. IMHO.
Led Zepplin is the greatest rock band ever.
The general consensus is the telephone was accidentally left by those who set up the gear.
Do we have another Led Zeppelin song for you to react to?.....all of them. And each different from the last. One thing Led Zeppelin is not is a one trick pony. Enjoy the ride, you'll love it.
THE GREATEST BAND EVER HANDS DOWN!!!!!❤😊
The person who called you out for saying music video needs to learn the difference between a “music video” and an “Official music video!”
John Bonham is the milestone for rock. It's always perfect, he and the others created a new musical genre.
The telephone on top of the mellotron...well somebody has to order a post gig takeaway for the lads in the band!
The organist John Paul Jones also plays bass on this using foot pedals under the organ
John Bonham had been a butcher apprentice and was proud to say that he had developped his energetic drumming by cutting meat.
The better live concert is the 1973 Madison Square Garden performance. They were on fire and just killed it. Just not the same IMHO.
I agree that the 1973 MSG concert was great. But, as Kashmir was only released in 1975, they did not play it then
@@hans-christianpoulsen4103You are correct sir. Good catch. It was late and I was tired. Mea culpa. This is why I love these threads. It keeps me honest.
I highly recommend you one s another song by LED ZEPPELI:
"When the Levee Breakes" - ENJOY :o)
And note: they were THE FOUNDERS of Hard Rock, the first band ON THIS PLANET to ever play this kind of music!!!
That’s my insane guess for the phone 😂
Any live video from their 1973 MSG show is incredible
And I don’t know if you’ve done symphonic metal band Epica but if you want to see a band and orchestra backing them perform with severe lighting check out their 2013 Retrospective video of the song Chasing The Dragon
Same concert Achilles Last Stand
Bonzo. The greatest drummer ever. RIP you genius.
4 artist all of them masters of there craft.
That’s a D-3 Hammond!
The telephone may have been a direct line to the engineer at the control desk. If I was playing a mellotron live, I would probably want a technician close at hand.
The band said it was left there by accident.
It was a hot line to Kashmir!
He had a telephone since mobile phones were not available at the time. I hope that clarify's the issue.
one of my favorites non-standard guitar tunings (DADGAD)
I hope you do more Zep, Stairway to Heaven Live MSG is incredible. They were younger and a better read on Roberts beautiful vocals.
No weak heels on these boys so enjoy that one too ;)
Incidentally I prefer the Page/Plant Unledded version of Kashmir with a full Egyptian Orchestra!
Aside from their classic hit Stairway to Heaven, try listening to the studio version of No Quarter
As I mentioned before, this is only topped by "Stairway to Heaven".
no... Stairway was folksy clap-trap. THIS is the song that they will be remembered for.
