  • In this video, I go in depth on how to setup a new VE Pro system to work in a Cubase Scoring Template. While this is aimed at Cubase, it works similarly in other DAWs.
    If you need information on picking hardware for your servers as well as a guide on how to set everything up that takes place before this video starts, check out this post on my site: goo.gl/jMx7pu

    This is very good to know that VEP runs smoothly and supports server OS systems. This is the first video that confirms this fact so far. Never saw anyone installed VEP on a server OS. I was a bit worried of software compatibility issues before going to the server route. Cool!

    I did an upgrade from VEP5 to VEP7 and had some routing issues with v7. This video solved it. Great work. Thank you for this.

    This is a really helpful video. I will say, I don't have Albion One, so half the time that you mention "Woods Ensembles", I think you're talking about a group of all of your woodwind samples. It's kind of difficult to tell when a folder is for all of your woodwinds, or just for Albion One's "Woods Ensemble". I've had to rewatch a bunch because of that. I hope that's helpful to consider for future videos. Either way, thanks for the great tutorial!

      Hey! Thanks very much for the feedback! Yes, you are totally right; I need to get much stronger at my editing. I'm also trying to find a workflow that is solid. I've done quite a bit of back-and-forth with myself over which is best, and I think I should just treat each upload like a short film... screen grab, into final cut, audio in pro tools / cubase, final export. As for the VCA faders. I have a few reasons for going with the normal Group channels instead. It isn't as apparent in this first tutorial, but in part 3, I go more in depth about the way I have routing setup for stems and that kind of thing. I don't have much experience with VCA, and it is a pro version only feature (at least I think), which means I would have further limited the number of people I could have helped. Again, thanks SO much for your feedback. I hope to receive more in the future!

    Hi,thanks for sharing your videos!! i am currently trying to build an orchestral template with VEpro7 and Cubase 10.5. i am running them on a single windows 10 desktop.
    I have vepro connected correctly with it's server and with cubase.
    I have created the first INSTANCE in vepro and have loaded Kontakt in it. Inside that Kontakt i have loaded several vst instruments (about8/9)
    and have them all routed correctly and it all works fine. I have them routed to INSTANCE 1 MIDI IN 1. It it all set up fine and routed to the
    instruments corresponding audio channels.
    Now for my problem!
    I created and loaded a second Kontakt within the vepro INSTANCE 1. That is all set up the same as the first Kontakt,except that with this 2nd Kontakt,
    i have it routed to INSTANCE 1 MIDI IN2.Again i have loaded vst instruments in this second kontakt and have it set the same as the first one apart from
    that it is going to midi in 2. Now the problem is that i have midi signals working and showing in the relevant faders but i have NO SOUND!!!!!!!!!!!
    I CANNOT UNDERSTAND OR FIND/SEE WHERE THE PROBLEM IS? Ihave tried all sorts of different configurations and routing etc but i just can't get any sound
    out of this second Kontakt in the VEpro Instance 1.
    Any advice you could give or maybe the answer to what is wrong would be very much appreciated. Best Regards and #STAYSAFE!!

      So INSTANCE 1 is the second instance? So the second KONTAKT is getting MIDI signals and the signal is showing at KONTAKT, but you can not hear it. Seems, the routing is not correct.

    I love the idea of the R710 - so cheap in comparison to other alternatives. But I'm guessing it wouldn't do too well on the DawBench VI Polyphony count test. Well, that's not fair - it would do really well for what it cost. But I'm wondering how it would do. Actually knowing how it stacks up against other options in a real-world, repeatable test would be very valuable and would help people (like me!) make decisions.... How do you feel about running those tests?

      Hello! Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment! I'm currently connected using 1Gb connections. I've actually just purchased more bulk cable and a higher capacity switch, so they will each be connected through 4Gb aggregate switch ports. While I think 10Gb would be sweet, I don't know that it would really be a good use of money; VEPro is super efficient at just 1Gb.

    • @Coryarobbinsmusic
      @Coryarobbinsmusic  6 років тому

      VCA Faders are great, but I honestly like using the group method fur purposes of Stemming. Signal doesn't flow through VCA faders, so I would have to have the VCA Faders as well as the Group equivalent to pull off the same thing. I'm sure that there is a case for me being wrong, but I've not yet been convinced. I would LOVE for you to show me a better way to do this. Being proved wrong only gets me closer to being good at this stuff!

    • @Coryarobbinsmusic
      @Coryarobbinsmusic  6 років тому

      Hi Brent! Sorry for the crazy long delay. I've been snowed under by projects. Anyway, I am using the DataCenter edition because, as I mentioned, I am a Systems Administrator, and this is the license I use for every server... That said, it isn't at all a requirement for this. On my particular setup, Essentials would not have been an option. Essentials is capped at 64GB of RAM and only 2 CPUs. I could have used Standard, which like Data Center allows 24 TB of RAM and 512 cores. Personally, if I didn't already have the Data Center License, I would have gone with the Standard edition. Hope that helps!

    What do you think about the SAS Hard drives vs SSD Drives?

    • @Coryarobbinsmusic
      @Coryarobbinsmusic  5 років тому +1

      Hi Jonathan! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Honestly, this depends on the purpose. I think, for a VEP server, you can't beat an SSD setup. We are all about minimizing latency, so every little bit of speed/performance we can squeeze out of our equipment is a major part of that. SSD's make me nervous in server applications outside of music because they have a more limited number of writes that can be made to them. Admittedly, this number is crazy high, so unless it was something like a file server for a school, it shouldn't be a big deal. For a VEP server, the information is being read on playback, not written, so this is a non-issue. SAS is still the standard in enterprise server deployments, but that is changing as more services move to cloud based SAAS, storage, and general productivity. There was a time not too long ago that companies needed a pretty decent sized server closet to handle the daily needs of the company. Now, it is possible to do everything through the cloud, while it might not be as efficient quite yet for some things.... Anyway the point of my ramblings is that a lot of enterprise locations and schools have started moving to SSD's for their server applications too. As high-write intensity applications diminish, so does the fear of drive failure. I hope I didn't stray too far away from why you were asking! Thanks again for reaching out!

    could somebody explain to me when it is necessary to change midi ports? I have a very small template and I am using the same port for each instance of VE...but I really don't know what the ports do. Tried looking it up but I can't figure it out. Do you only need to use ports if you have a ton a tracks in the same instrument category? Thank you

    • @Coryarobbinsmusic
      @Coryarobbinsmusic  5 років тому

      Hello, elkwolf! So sorry for the slow reply time! I'm not sure if you are talking about the ports inside of cubase or the ports inside of the server when you inside Kontakt or whatever sampler you are using. If you mean the former, you use a different port each time you add a new instance of a sampler , so for instance, I'll have a "Brass" instance in VE Pro, and my first instance of Kontakt will be on port 1 (it defaults to all, so you have to change it). I'll fill that instance of Kontakt with some logical grouping of instruments, say Solo Trumpet articulations. I'll put each articulation on a separate port A midi channel until I get to 16, and then that will facilitate the need to move to a new instance of Kontakt. For my second instance, I'll call it something like "Trumpet a2 Articulations," and I'll set the port to 2... etc... Doing it this way, my brass instance can have my full brass section, and I don't have to have a crazy number of VE Pro Instances. When you launch a project, at least for me, cubase pauses at the end of each instance while it connects to the next VE Pro instance in the chain. Keeping the number of VEP instances to a minimum decreases that load time. I hope that answers your question!
