    I see this has been up for awhile now- Hope you're well! Thanks for keeping this little gem up on the UA-cam. It got me most of the way there! Thank you!

    I was watching some videos from JunkieXL explaining his home studio composing setup and I wanted more information so I ended up stumbling upon this video. I'll probably never use VSL but I like looking up things like this just to see how it works. Thanks for making a great, straight-forward tutorial!

    Little confused about what is a network switch that you connect to the router?

    • @AtomicAudioOfficial
      @AtomicAudioOfficial  2 роки тому +1

      A network switch is essentially a way to add additional ports to your router.
      If you are near your router, and have spare ports, there's actually no need for the switch. For my setup, the studio is quite far away, so I have a long cable running from m y router to the switch in the studio, and then I plug my studio machines into the switch. It gives them both an internet connection, and a fast way to communicate with each other (necessary for VEP - Wireless is not fast enough!).
      I hope this helps.

      Yep! If it loads in VEP on your windows machine, you can run it to Logic!

    I thought you could just connect the two machines through the ethernet cable and done. Do actually need an Internet connection or just the router?

    You need a video explaining how you get the networks to talk to each other first, without setting up static IP's nothing works from what i recall

    great video, thanks for uploading this! I have a question, (actally two) if you can help me? A) Can 1 master and 1 slave be connected one to each other just with a ethernet cable between respective LAN ports? B) Also, in case I use a switch, but the router has a limited speed of 100 mbps, will master and slave exchange data at that low speed, or will the data pass just through switch, even if the switch is linked to router? thanks in advance!

    If you get the time, an answer would be appreciated. Jay

    Do you have any info on what to look for when buying a windows machine? Just something with a good processor and a lot of ram basically?

    Audio Monkey Great video. I'm still trying to work out how the kontakt library pick up the signal from my DAW, do need to the have the software on both machines ? Or cubase on both machines ?. How do you send the Library, is it just to the slave ? and the directories just to the master ? ,bit confused myself , please could shine a light for please. I have 2 computers win 10 plus 2 dongles Cheers

    • @AtomicAudioOfficial
      @AtomicAudioOfficial  3 роки тому +1

      You only need the library on the slave machine. Essentially that machine does all the heavy lifting.
      When you hook it up to your main machine, it pulls all the data from the slave. There is no need to have it on both machines.

    • @goddersollie67

      @@AtomicAudioOfficial How do you get your library on the the slave machine via VE P is there way to this, do you literally load everything on a drive ? sorry I'm trying avoid a long ordeal of putting Kontakt on another machine and getting it all wrong, kontakt takes a while to unload but that .Thankyou I wish VSL would explain in a bit more detail

    • @AtomicAudioOfficial
      @AtomicAudioOfficial  3 роки тому +1

      @@goddersollie67 you do have to install kontakt and all your instruments on that second machine. Think of VE Pro as the insert part of your DAW, you load everything on that machine to save the resources on your local machine. You load the instrument into VE pro in the same way you would do on Cubase or Logic, this does mean transferring all your files over though.
      It is a bit of a lengthy process to get it all over, but once you have done it, you save tonnes of time by not having to constantly freeze tracks!

      @@goddersollie67 by having your libraries on your slave machine, you dont need them on your main machine 😄

    Hello! What if main and slave computers are equipped with Thunderbolt ports? Do we need USB Ethernet Switch as well? Maybe with the proper adapter...? Thanks.

    • @leaedwards4581
      @leaedwards4581 6 років тому +1

      Daniele Carretta if you have an ethernet port built into your computer then use that for the switch. If you have usb available, there’s no reason you couldn’t use that, the presence of a thunderbolt port wouldn’t at all affect how an Ethernet connection works! :)

      Thanks! I was wondering if a Thunderbolt can do the job faster/better than an Ethernet can do...in terms of connecting computers I mean. But probably they are just not comparable, aren't they?

    Thank you for this video. I have a couple of questions. Maybe someone here can help? I'm running a macbook pro '17 touchbar (front end) and have a custom PC running windows 7 (slave). I've connected them via ethernet cable (no switch). I setup the IP configuration based on a tutorial from another video. On the PC, the network is showing up as however, it's an unidentified network, and therefore I can't receive an internet signal on the machine. My MBP is connected to internet via WiFi but I was told this would be fine - it seemingly is not? I've tried running an ethernet cable directly from the PC machine to my router, but, still can't seem to get an internet connection. I've been at my wits end because without internet access on the slave machine, I don't know how to download software to it (ie VEPro v.6). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Great Video Man! Just the content I was searching for. I'm assuming if you have two Macs you can run Ip over Thunderbolt.

    • @leaedwards4581
      @leaedwards4581 6 років тому

      I'm not sure if you can run IP over Thunderbolt, it should work just the same as if you used a second windows machine if you plug into a network switch or even a router. I've been meaning to get the next one up, I'll do it very soon!

    Do I Need 2 keys for Vienna Ensemble pro or is one for both the main and slave pc enough?

      Not sure if you ever figured this out, but you only need a license on the machine that is going to run the VEPRO server application. You dont need a license to run the VEPRO plugin in your DAW.

    Thanks for this, much needed and appreciated!
    Just wondering: would it be possible to connect the Macbook to another (older) Mac (the slave machine) directly, plugging one end of the ethernet cable in the Macbook (using the USB-C to ethernet adapter) and the other end directly into the ethernet port of the other Mac? Or using the Ethernet Switch to connect multiple slaves to the main computer, but still without having to go through the router?
    Having to run cables to the router is rather impractical when the router is in a different room with a number of walls between it and the studio.
    Edit: Let me rephrase that: technically, that would be possible to at least to a direct Ethernet connection (support.apple.com/kb/PH25314?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US) and likely also using the Ethernet Switch, but would this work with Vienna Enseble Pro? Is there a specific reason your switch is plugged into the router? Is that because you need to have an internet connection when wifi is turned off?

    • @AtomicAudioOfficial
      @AtomicAudioOfficial  6 років тому

      Jolle de Wit this wouldn't work as you need a router to generate an IP
      This would do the trick for you though:
      TP-Link TL-PA4010KIT 600 Nano Power Line Adapter Starter Kit, No Configuration Required, UK Plug - Pack of 2 www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BECPIMC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_WZ3PAbR8K2PYM
      You plug one end in near your router, plug the other end in your studio and into your switch and the 2 plugs connect to each other wirelessly:)

      Genius! I actually already have a power line adapter to get a decent wifi signal in my studio, but I had never taken notice of the ethernet port, let alone made the connection (pun intented ;) to using it as a solution for this issue. You've really helped with me with all this to be able to create the setup that will allow me to run a decent orchestral template. Thanks so much!

      In the course Template In A Weekend (from Thinkspace Education), Guy Michelmore talks about slave computers and using VEP. In it he suggests going the gigabit ethernet router option, but he also mentions that if you have ONLY 2 computers in your setup (i.e. the main and the slave computer) you could opt for connecting the two computers directly with an ethernet crossover cable.
      Notice: you need a CROSSOVER ethernet cable, which is a specific type, a regular ethernet cable will not work. Also: this option is not the way to go if you have more than 2 computers in your setup.
      I have not tried this yet (as you will learn from my questions above) I am still figuring everything out myself, but I’ll take Guy’s word for it. Great course by the way (from what I can tell, I’ve only just watched a few of the videos in the past days), you may want to look into it. thinkspaceeducation.com/tiaw/
      As for running samples off your main computer’s SDD… I doubt this will involve the calculation power of your slave’s RAM, I don’t think it works that way. You will want the samples to be loaded from the slave computer in order for VEP to use that computer’s RAM. At least, that what seems logical to me. I’ll bet Audio Monkey has the answers on that :)

      Pete Archer yeah the quicker the better!
      Internal ssd is also quicker than external USB drives, I wasn't using my normal setup. I do in fact use a server with a high memory capacity myself so this would certainly work!

    You mixed up the terms client & server. The computer running the vienna session is the server and the computers connecting to it via the plugin are the slaves.

    Why in the world would you have your intro music at such a high volume, I dont get it. Us using earphones tend to shut you off and move on before we even watch your video.
