I have several of these heaters. The older ones with the metal body just don't die. The ones you get from ebay or amazon with the plastic bodies nowadays typically last a few years. The diesel pump and the internal fan motor are the only problems I've had so far. The pump for some reason just quits and you don't get the proper dosage causing it to try and start but it won't. The internal motor to drive the fan blades is a brushed motor. The brushes wear down eventually and its much easier and cheaper to just replace the motor than the brushes. You will hear a whining sound when it starts to go and the force of the fan starts dying down. From what I remember both conditions cause an error code. Much love from NW Ontario Canada
Really appreciate the level of detail here. A lot of content gets tailored for short attention spans, but this vid gave me a good idea of if I would be interested in a similar set up and how to replicate it.
Dude I like that suppressor box for the fuel pump, everyone says that the noise is the only downside to the heaters. I'm going to install one of these and I'm going to get that type of box. Thanks for the tip. Good luck with your channel
I have been using one of these for 5 years now, a 8kw unit but its in a RV. I live in it full time, including Canadian winters. the only thing that wore out was the pump, $28 to replace. To be fair it was probably my error, at minus 40 the diesel fuel will gel burnt out the pump running dry. I now run a 1:1 ratio of kerosene and diesel in the winter, zero problems since. brilliant idea on the camera box for the pump. For the exhaust I used a marine chrome exhaust port flange from amazon, $40 super clean install

Excellent job on the installation! I've been truck camping since the 80's & I've always used electric heaters, but this now has got me thinking about getting one. Drive safe. 🤠
As for longevity I've had a five kilowatt one for over five years now and it has worked flawlessly I have it in a 24-foot Class C motorhome it will keep my motorhome warm at -20 Celsius no problem it's been a great investment
Glad to hear I have a 2k in a stand-alone unit I use for truck cap camping. Work great ! Really hope mine last as long. If it last 5 years like yours that’s $20 bucks a year. Great bargain compared to paying extra for a powered camp site, running a generator, or even using a propane heater. Thanks for your comment!
Great video and good content sharing. Love camping in my truck and this will solve the propane based heating issues I had. Looking forward to more videos!
I replaced the propane furnace in my 18 foot camper with an 8kw diesel heater. I lived in that camper full time for 3 years and only had 1 issue with the heater. About 2 months in the fuel pump gave out. the best part is the heater put out way more heat than the propane furnace and went through way less fuel. 20lb propane tank would last 1.5 days vs 1gal of diesel a day
That's awesome. They are very economical vs propane for sure. I did the math last winter, it cost me less than $2 a night to heat my truck. Can't complain about that. Thanks for watching!
I’m on my 5th velvor? Diesel heater and I’ve never had a single problem with any of them. I full time a motor home and use two of these to heat a 30 foot motor home. I also have one in my jeep and truck. You can’t go wrong with these for the price.
I have no complaints. I ran this one quite a bit all winter long with zero issues. From elevations around 300' to 5,000' - it never failed to start/run and I never had the soot issues some people experience. You're right - for the price these are really tough to beat. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! A 2kw seems to be just right for a truck cap. Careful when purchasing though, not all heaters advertised as 2kw are actually 2kw. Best wishes!
@@Outside605 one question I have since I’d rather avoid drilling a hole in the bed of my truck, could I install the whole unit sideways and rig up to vent out the little storage recess in the side of the bed and out the rear? I have a whole summer to figure out exactly what I can or can’t do but I plan on making a little video detailing my path as well. I’d love to see any camper updates you’ve made since

I'm thinking about using one of these to heat the cab of my Toyota Tacoma, on which the heater has gone out. My question is about the power source. I don't know much about marine batteries. How would you recharge the battery the diesel heater is connected to since, in the setup shown here, the battery doesn't have an alternator to recharge it? Great video and camper build! I have a 2004 Dodge Ram I am planning to set up as a camper. I like the lightweight, simple design your have. Question about the heater intake: Does it use fresh outside air and or ambient air intake that's switchable, kind of like a car heater?
Hello and thank you. The heater intake uses fresh air from outside via an intake pipe mounted under the truck box. There is a fan that blows ambient air through the heater "fins" than warms it up. When installed properly, I feel like it's safer than a buddy heater. I still use a carbon monoxide detector just to be safe. Thanks for watching.
I’ve probably watched your videos ten times each. I’ve started collecting items for my build. What is the width and height of your box? I’m thinking about using 2020 extruded alumium for the frame, so it’ll be extremely light and tough. Thanks for your videos, they have helped me a lot. Can’t wait to see where you go next.

I've been dragging my feet on installing the one I have for my truck and really appreciate your videos on how you did yours. I do have a question about the fuel line as I must have missed something. Why does the fuel line go into the bed from underneath if the heater and tank are both in the bed?
I'm curious. If the fuel line enters the heater from under the bed, couldn't the fuel pump be installed under the truck bed as well. Wouldn't that avoid noise inside the sleeping area? Or is there a reason it has to be inside.
You absolutely could. I've seen that often on van builds. I drive through a lot of slushy, salty roads in the winter and having it inside is one less potential point of failure. The downside is the noise. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Any idea what kind of current draw do you typically see out of this? Also, what size battery is that you're using? Do you just charge it off shore power?
I haven't spent time looking a usage draw but with a 100ah battery, I can run it for 3-4 nights on a charge. Maybe more, I've never run it out before adding charge. Shore power or my portable generator. Works well for my needs. A roof mounted solar would probably be a great option. Thanks for watching!

Yes. I remove it several times a year when I need to use the truck bed for a project or to pick things up from the store. I leave the heater attached to the truck bed during winter and during the summer, I remove the heater altogether. The bed is fairly light and I can slide it up and over the heater to remove. Thanks for watching.
I camped down to mid single digits. Honestly, it would work in much colder weather. I typically run it on low to medium. The back of a truck is such a small space, it doesn't take much heat to keep you warm. In my opinion, anything over a 2kw is overkill for this kind of camping. Thanks for watching!
Usually I’m truck camping on fishing trips. I have the inverter generator to charge the trolling motor batteries so I also charge the battery in the truck at the same time. Every so often I stay in a campground with power so I’ll charge off that if needed. That said, I’ve got 3 nights running the diesel heater off a single charge. That’s often enough to get me through a trip. My new setup has solar. Hopefully I’ll have a video of it soon. Thanks for watching!
I didn't for this season, nor did I upgrade the soft green fuel line. Surprisingly, I ran this heater probably 20-30 days/nights since I installed it in December with zero issues. That said, my plan is to upgrade both for next winter. Thanks for watching!
I've used this exact heater for 2 full winters now. I don't full time, but camp fairly regularly. It's never skipped a beat. The only "issue" I had was this past March in Laramie, Wyoming. The elevation was too much for stock fuel settings. Outside of that, it's quite the machine. Thanks for watching.
Since I work full time, my trips are typically over the weekend. The battery has no issues running the heater 3 nights and more on a full charge. If I’m going on a longer trip, my little inverter generator does the trick. Thanks for watching
They all use same parts and you can order any part you need and they have rebuild kits to make it new. If you can get kerosene or Jet A fuel works the best no soot build up like diesel or you can blend it 50/50 and your good wont have to take apart and clean, JetA or kerosene is the best and diesel is third choice or a blend is better then 100% diesel !

@@Outside605 Thanks for your response! It's incredibly valuable information as there aren't too many people using diesel heaters like this.
Thanks. So battery charging is addressed how?
Usually I’m truck camping on fishing trips. I have the inverter generator to charge the trolling motor batteries so I also charge the battery in the truck at the same time. Every so often I stay in a campground with power so I’ll charge off that if needed.
That said, I’ve got 3 nights running the diesel heater off a single charge. That’s often enough to get me through a trip.
My new setup has solar. Hopefully I’ll have a video of it soon. Thanks for watching!
Can you add a link to the product to brought?
I added a link in the description. Thanks for watching!
How long will it run off the 12v battery?
Several days for sure.
Link to product on EBay is toast, shud post brand and model if you can, so that people can try to locate it.
It's a Vevor 2KW model. It's still on ebay. My apologies for the link. Thanks for watching!
So the exhaust is dumping into the cap ?
No, the exhaust runs through the bed and out the back of the truck.
You also upgraded the fuel filter ?
I didn't for this season, nor did I upgrade the soft green fuel line. Surprisingly, I ran this heater probably 20-30 days/nights since I installed it in December with zero issues. That said, my plan is to upgrade both for next winter.

I have limited space under my bed what's the maximum height of it?
I'd guess about 6-7". I'll try to get a measurement. Thanks for watching!
Can you have two air outlets?
Absolutely. They make diesel heaters with multiple outlets. You could also get creative with hvac parts from the store. Thanks for watching.
How's it holding up?
I've used this exact heater for 2 full winters now. I don't full time, but camp fairly regularly. It's never skipped a beat. The only "issue" I had was this past March in Laramie, Wyoming. The elevation was too much for stock fuel settings. Outside of that, it's quite the machine.
Thanks for watching.
HOW IS THE HEATER BATTERY CHARGED ,,
Since I work full time, my trips are typically over the weekend. The battery has no issues running the heater 3 nights and more on a full charge. If I’m going on a longer trip, my little inverter generator does the trick.

@@Outside605 thanks
They all use same parts and you can order any part you need and they have rebuild kits to make it new. If you can get kerosene or Jet A fuel works the best no soot build up like diesel or you can blend it 50/50 and your good wont have to take apart and clean, JetA or kerosene is the best and diesel is third choice or a blend is better then 100% diesel !
Good info
Those buddy heaters smell bad also
Truth.
Just turn on the fan and you won’t here it !
Exactly. I'm so use to it now it doesn't bother me at all.
Excellent Review.

Is it possible to run it off of a cigarette plug instead of battery
I would assume you could, depending on the rating/fusing of the port/adapter
