The Ford Thunderbird (colloquially called the T-Bird) is a personal luxury car produced by Ford from model years 1955 until 1997 and 2002 until 2005 throughout 11 distinct generations. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was produced in a variety of body configurations. These included a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed again as a two-seat convertible.
Ford targeted the two-seat Thunderbird as an upscale model, but the design introduced for 1958 featured a rear seat and arguably marked expansion of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury cars. An American interpretation of the grand tourer, personal luxury cars were built with a higher emphasis on driving comfort and convenience features over handling and high-speed performance. From 1968 to 1998, Lincoln-Mercury marketed rebadged variants of the Thunderbird as the Continental Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, Mercury Cougar, Lincoln Mark VII, and Lincoln Mark VIII.
The Ford Thunderbird was introduced in February 1953 as a response to Chevrolet's new sports car, the Corvette, which was publicly unveiled in prototype form just a month before.[8] Under rapid development, the Thunderbird went from idea to prototype in about a year, being unveiled to the public at the Detroit Auto Show on February 20, 1954. It was a two-seat design available with a detachable glass-fiber hardtop and a folding fabric top.[9] Production of the Thunderbird began on September 9 of that year, with the car beginning sales as a 1955 model on October 22, 1954. Though sharing some design characteristics with other Fords of the time, such as single, circular headlamps and tail lamps and modest tailfins, the Thunderbird was sleeker in shape and featured a hood scoop and a 150 mph (240 km/h) speedometer not available on other Fords. It used mechanical components from mass-market Ford models. The Thunderbird's 102.0 inches (2,591 mm) wheelbase frame was a shortened version used in other Fords and the standard 292 cu in (4.8 L) Y-block V8 came from Ford's Mercury division.[10]
Though inspired by, and positioned directly against, the Corvette, Ford billed the Thunderbird as a "personal luxury car|personal car", putting a greater emphasis on the car's comfort and convenience features rather than its inherent sportiness.[11][12][13][14][15][16] The Thunderbird sold exceptionally well in its first year. In fact, the Thunderbird outsold the Corvette by more than 23-to-one for 1955 with 16,155 Thunderbirds sold against 700 Corvettes, and 2,200 Studebaker Speedsters.[17][14][18][19] With the Thunderbird considered a success, few changes were made to the car for the 1956 model year. The most notable change was moving the spare tire to a continental-style rear bumper to make more storage room in the trunk and a new 12-volt electrical system.[11][20][21] The addition of the weight at the rear caused steering issues. Among the few other changes were new paint colors, the addition of circular porthole windows as standard in the fiberglass roof to improve rearward visibility (with a delete option), and a 312 cu in (5.1 L) Y-block V8 rated at 215 hp (160 kW) when mated to a three-speed manual transmission or 225 hp (168 kW) when mated to a Ford-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission; this transmission featured a "low gear", which was accessible manually via the gear selector. When in "Drive", it was a two-speed automatic transmission (similar to Chevrolet's Powerglide). The low gear could also be accessed with wide open throttle. In 1956, Ford also added its new Lifeguard safety package.[22]
The Thunderbird was revised for 1957 with a reshaped front bumper, a larger grille and tailfins, and larger tail lamps. The instrument panel was heavily restyled with round gauges in a single pod, and the rear of the car was lengthened, allowing the spare tire to be positioned back in the trunk. [14] The 312 cu in (5.1 L) V8 became the Thunderbird's standard engine, and was now rated at 245 hp (183 kW). Other, more powerful versions of this V8 were available, including one with two four-barrel Holley carburetors (VIN code "E") and another with a Paxton supercharger rated at 300 hp (224 kW) (VIN code "F"). - Авто та транспорт
Wow, Revell is really taking the decal sheets to new levels.
Yeah!
Looks great to me! Thanks for uploading this.
I am amazed that you applied that gloss finish with a brush! I have not heard of or seen that before.
Belle réalisation !! Bravo ...
Great review and awesome build.can't wait to get my hands on one or two.the pink looks great.thinking testers electric pink will be my choice.wow that decal sheet is next level for sure. Thanks Chris enjoy all your builds.looking forward to next review.peace
Beautiful model!!!!
It's the first time I don't see Testors Silver on the gearbox? 😎
Lovely build 👍
Wonderful build & presentation Chris! I love your positive attitude about our hobby ! Killer color choices as always 👌!
Thanks for watching!
That turned out very nice!
When I was 16 years old I had the chance to buy a real red & white top 1956 Thunderbird for the whopping sum of $300. Being young and VERY DUMB I passed it up. I've been regretting it ever since. I need to get that kit so I can look at it and sigh over the missed opportunity from time to time...
Pretty in Pink, Chris-well done!! 👍👍
Just picked this up at my local hobby lobby today. I chose it to be my very first model car. I bought a different assortment of acrylic page that came with the stand though.😅 Please wish me luck.
Beautiful T-Bird!...Keep the builds coming!
Thanks for watching!
I remember the older one that came in red - I always thought of that old Robert Urich TV show "Vega$" whenever I saw that - good to see a pink car that isn't a 1959 Cadillac! Great build once again.
Thanks for watching!
Cool build Chris, I was gifted a 56T bird Monogram ( metal body) years ago. I had no idea how to finish it, I did build and paint all the plastic stuff, it's what I'm used to. But the metal body ? So back into it's box years later a couple of my modeling buddies did a year of birth build. The T bird got its chance just cleaned up the body primed and painted. Got it all together was nice, glad I got outta my comfort zone. Really enjoy your chanel. Always fun to see all the Bits and Bob's.
Keep calm
and
model on
I can confirm it IS the same kit as the red one. I have right now 2 of those waiting in my stash. lol
My "first" kit. I was... 7? Maybe 6? I dunno. All I know is that dad built it for me then he just handled me a paint brush and orange paint and I painted all over it. It was Christmas or the day after and then, I went to take a nap in the afternoon and put it beside my pillow. I tried to restore it roughly 20 yrs ago, but the plastic was brittle and it all fell apart. Built one in the 90s that I turned in a "custom". I still have this one.
My plans for the two in my stash is for one to be made to look the one I did as a kid (albeit with the skills I have today) and the other one in a restomod. I really love that kit, the only drawback I can think of, but maybe they fixed it, is that the white wall inserts tend to dry even more than the rest of the plastic and start to crumble away with time. Really nice to see that Revell kept the molds in good shape.
Also, pretty cool that Revell put such a nice decal sheet in this new release.
Thanks for confirming!
great build, great color!
Thanks for watching!
I absolutely love that color on that car. Great build! Very much enjoyed watching this one. :)
Thanks a bunch!
Lol great job on your second time around. Another truly iconic car here
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another outstanding build from the beginning to end. Well done sir!
Thank you! Cheers!
Bird, bird, bird. Bird is the word!
Nice job again, Chris ! That is indeed the same kit that Monogram molded in red plastic when we were kids. I built one then, unpainted. And I built another in my 20s, painted black, when a friend’s mom told me she’d had one as a teenager in the early 60s. I gave that one to her for her, of course.
Thanks for watching!
I love your enthusiasm Chris!! Well done on the t-bird my friend!!👍🏼🤘🏻
Thank you so much 👍
Another fine build Chris
Thanks for watching!
Those first gen T-Birds were the best looking and most iconic IMO. I'm partial to '56s and '57s myself.
Awesome job 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Been using the ColorShot spray paints on my last few builds... the metallic colors look amazing
It looks great Chris the great job I really think pink is your color 👍👍
Thanks for watching!
Wow Chris that 56 Thunderbird is beautiful!! I want to build one now! Excellent work as always and that brake master cylinder attached to the battery definitely seems odd! Keep the hobby alive!
Thanks for watching!
Real cool mate👍
Thanks bud!
This really is a beautiful looking kit.!!! It came out great. I think it is the Pink that makes it really pop for me. I really want to get this kit now.!! Hahaha Great job brother.
Cool car!! Looks nice!!
Thanks for watching!
@@hpiguy np love your channel! U should get out Model Car Guy he builds models too
That is beautiful ! I have a red 57 Thunderbird in my collection. But would love to have this one. Love that Hot Pink. Don't know why some people put down pink because a lot of cars were pink in the 50's. I have heard that Elvis Presley had a pink Cadillac. So if it's good enough for Elvis, it's good enough for me. Beautiful job man ! Thumbs up !
Nice build! Nothing says 50's like Hot Pink!
Thanks for watching!
was half expecting music from American graffiti :) while in the paint booth
This kit was originally released in 1977 with a diecast metal body and hood, but was otherwise the same exact kit. I built one of those and painted it black, it came out nicely. It's been re-released in plastic a number of times since then.
Thanks for watching!
I don´t know why, but this car is so pretty it makes me happy x>
You did an amazing job on this beauty! Your method of build is methodical and has delivered a fantastic representation of this classic car. Delighted to have found your channel!
Thanks for watching!
This was once a Monogram kit from the Robert Urich TV show VEGAS
Wonderful job. Nice color choice. It was really nice to see another well engineered Revell kit easily go together. I really think Revell kits are the greatest, and I build them every chance I get. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Your approach to model building is such a breath of fresh air! Build for the sheer fun and enjoyment of it. Imagine! I love your videos and how you take the time to show us how you do things. I've been using many of your tips and techniques in my own builds. I do have a question about Mod Podge for the windows/clear parts...does it dry smooth and clear? I picked some up to use on my AMT Hot Wheels Camaro but I am a little nervous using it as it looks thick. But your windows come out so nicely so I was just wondering. Again, awesome videos and thank you!
Thanks! I go against the cool kids and actually try to enjoy my hobbies. Weird, right?
I use the gloss Mod Podge and it dries clear and very glossy. Semi hard, but it lets stuff flex a bit.
Ok! Looks good enuff to drive home! I am considering a toaster oven to dry paint faster, so i can build kits quicker. It takes me one to four weeks to build and paint one car kit!
Food Dehydrator is a better option. Toaster oven will likely melt the subject.
...and he had fun - fun - fun while he finished his T-Bird today (Beach Boy approved).
Really nice build. Thanks for another FUN SATURDAY
Thanks RA!
i wonder what can of hot pink did you use and clear coat looks great
Maybe in another build you could show us how to detail with the Pledge floor gloss ?
I believe a few of his older videos show him focusing on his method
I've done it in dozens of videos including recent ones.
Search the channel home page for 'polish' or 'future' etc.

Love the pink my wife has a 02 Chevy avalanche black and pink only thing is the seat belts are on the wrong sides on the t bird
Great job Chris! Really love the PINK! Looks like it’s ready to roll off the showroom floor. We all had fun! So nice to watch you create the models. Look forward to great stuff ahead.
Thanks for watching!
I am not an early Thunderbird guy at all but with that being said I can appreciate their design and respect why some people love them. I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoy every single video you put out because they are extremely helpful and entertaining. You killed it with this build and even though I'm still not a Thunderbird guy you do a great job brother. Thank you and KEEP THEM COMING.... Everyone Remember to SMILE it's a HOBBY and It's SUPPOSE TO BE FUN 😜🤪
Thanks for watching!
Looks nice love t birds wish amt would would bring back the 57 t bird in 1.25 scale and monogram 58 t bird

i go to alot of car shows with my classic, i have seen a thunderbird with this exact paint color, its amazing
Beautiful color choice. Looks fantastic! Well done.
Thanks for watching!
Hi, just bought this for my first model car, what type of glue do you use and all your other tools? I want to be double prepared
Fun to watch as always 👍
Thanks for watching!
It isn't a convertible up-top -- it's a removable hard top.
Thank you for the model car builds.
No problem 👍
nice job, love that color.
Thanks for watching!
What's the liquid you used after super gluing the headers on?
Always an outstanding video and presentation
Thanks again!
Great job. Only one thing, the white on the seat bottoms did not go all the way back, was pink all around..
Thanks for watching!
Hey, hplguys, got a question. I watch almost every one of your vids and very helpful. Have been primering and using Rust 0 as you have but when it comes time to clear, it, mostly turns out like aliigator skin. Crinkles up. Same brand, same technique. Used on several diff models now. Any suggestions?
I haven't shot Rustoleum clears over their color coat paint in years.
You'll always hear me say I use Future Floor Polish (Pledge Revive It).
I do spray their semi gloss clear over their primers for the vinyl effect and have no issues.
@@hpiguy Thank you for the reply. Only did the hood on this last one to test so I wouldn't ruin the whole model. I have the floor polish you mentioned and will do that to the body. Thanks, again.
Nicely done!!
Thanks for watching!
I just found your channel, and we love it. My wife dream car is the 56 Tbird, and I would like to start my own build; however, Ravell did not offer this kit. Can you please advise where I may find this kit?
Thanks, John M
Welcome aboard!
The kit should be out by Summer, I'll update the link in the description when it's at modelroundup.com
Thanks!!
I'll keep an eye out.

I am a rookie as far as models goes. I was wondering what you are doing at the 34:00 mark?
The Thunderbird looks amazing! Might have to add it to my future list.
Thanks.
Using a grey Gundam marker to accent panel lines. Doesn't show up great on the camera at times.
Tip for you as "rookie" - You likely notice some "long-haulers" make mention of "stash" = collection of unbuilt kits - often more than could be built in a lifetime - even at Chris' pace! Finding "balance" is a challenge with "wish list" versus buying kits before being ready to aactually build - challenge being that often kits are produced in limited runs - so availability "down the road" can be either impossible or otherwise expensive via E-bay.... Once in a while waiting can pay off when a kit has slow sales and so is discounted to clear inventory. Short version = if there's a kit you really want to build - best to pick up at least one when it is releaased or re-released. Some great kits have been out of production for decades - even up to 40-50 years! Welcome to a great hobby - as Chris always emphasizes - build for the joy of it - build for yourself!
She's BEAUTIFUL Chris ‼️‼️1 ? , What Brand and Color Was The Pen You Used For The Panel Lines Please ?? Thanks For Sharing Your Fun n Love Of The Hobby and Have a Blessed Week Ahead 🤗🤗🤗.
That is a grey Gundam marker. Thanks for watching!
Possible explanation for the black Floorplan instead of body color:
Upper states car that has undercoating to protect against road salt.
Z-Bart under coating IIRC
Yup, kid sprayed it with undercoating, Ziebart, etc. :)
Are you going to do the Star Trek Bridge. Love to say your excellent work on that.
Yup, that will be built up.
Do you have a fan in your spray booth?
I bought this and I was too dumb to understand the instructions so I'm here lmaoo
Just a great job 👍 👌 so enjoy your videos 📹 😀 please keep them coming 🙏 😊 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 thank you Chris 😊 😀

My father had a '56 T-Bird in Fiesta Red, white interior, fender skirts, Continental kit, 312-2v, automatic. The car had to be started in neutral, not park. I don't think it had seat belts.
Mambo Pink was a great choice - sharp looking car. Thanks again for a great build.
You bet!
Nice build 👍
Thanks for watching!
very cool!
Thanks for watching!
Chris - you showed a burnishing tool in your '57 Chevy funny car build. Any luck you remember where you got it?
Any craft store has them.
Thanks!
Are you using a rhythograph pen for the doors for the seams?
Gundam marker on this one.
ya know....I too always wondered why these model companies make the fan blades chrome.....
Thanks for watching!
Hi Chris, How did you do the steering wheel? pink paint over the chrome?
Pink Sharpie for an anodized look.
@@hpiguy thx
I have heard those port hole windows referred to as $h/t house windows lol
I've heard the called Opera windows
I wonder hard hard it would to build the battle bird out of this kit?🤔
Oh Chris let me differ a bit about you. Indeed you're within the 10 top modelers whole world around. This is a master piece actually. I really don't know how you make that body paint to shine that way! I have my own 1/16 thunderbird by motormax and th elevel of detail on yours is outstanding. You really did it mister! What a beauty.
Thanks a lot!
Very very sharp T-Bird😊❤👍
Thanks for watching!
What kind of pen is used at 33:46 ? Thanks!
Which brand of brush glue do you use?
Modelroundup.com carries the Bondene glue that I like to use.
What cement are you using in the brush bottle?
That is Bondene, my favorite plastic glue.
Ford called the box paint as salmon my dad had a car the same color
i have used ALOT of ur techniques! purchased a few tools that you use as well. and bought a LOT of ur models you have built on here. KEPP IT UP!!
Thanks for watching!
You must have read my thoughts about wanting to see more assembly, makes the video a little longer but it's worth it. And I love how you point back at the camera and tell people to build it for you the way you want them to look.
Thanks for watching!
tremendous job, I had my doubts about painting mine pink, but I'm already convinced to give it that color. Although I would like to know the brand of the pen that I use to mark the door frames and the other compartments, I want to buy one. thank you and excellent work I love it
Thanks for watching!
Oh thats a Sexy Thunderchicken
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful job Chris! what glue are you using that has a brush in the bottle?
That would be Bondene.
Thanks for watching!
Anyone remember to „Vegas“,the TV-show?
I loved the red T-Bird,that defitnly the star of the show.
Sadly that this kit is the wrong year, frontbumper is different to the 57..
I remember it.
That looks like a maintenance free battery with hexagonal covers for the acid ports? Must be a modern day collectors car…
As always a very entertaining vid, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Another nice build!
Thanks for watching!
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching!
The color just makes this kit. Good video.
Thanks for watching!
ohhdamn ! Chris are you ok??? call 911 , ypu didnt paint a trans silver ...🤣🤣🤣
LOL, I saw the box art had it a blackish color so I followed suit this time.
Hi! What do you use to remove RustOleum Spray Can paint from the model?
Easy off oven cleaner.
Purple power/ Castrol super clean works as well
Super Clean will eat it off within a day.
