The Ford Thunderbird (colloquially called the T-Bird) is a personal luxury car produced by Ford from model years 1955 until 1997 and 2002 until 2005 across 11 distinct generations. Introduced as a two-seat convertible, the Thunderbird was produced in a variety of body configurations. These included a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat convertible and hardtop, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and five-passenger pillared coupe, with the final generation designed again as a two-seat convertible.
Ford targeted the two-seat Thunderbird as an upscale model, but the 1958 model year design introduced a rear seat and arguably marked the expansion of a market segment eventually known as personal luxury cars. This class of cars was positioned to emphasize driving comfort and convenience features over handling and high-speed performance. From 1968 through 1998, Lincoln-Mercury marketed rebadged variants of the Thunderbird as the Continental Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, Mercury Cougar, Lincoln Mark VII, and Lincoln Mark VIII.
For 1964, the Thunderbird was restyled in favor of a more squared-off appearance, which was mostly evident when viewing the car from the side or rear. Hinting at its roots in the previous generation of Thunderbird from which it evolved, the new model retained a similar grille design with quad headlights and a 113.2 inches (2,875 mm) wheelbase. As before, the new Thunderbird continued to be offered in hardtop, convertible, and Landau versions. The 300 hp (224 kW) 390 cu in (6.4 L) FE V8 continued as the standard engine for the Thunderbird. It was paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. For 1965, sequential turn signals were added, flashing the individual segments of the broad, horizontal tail lights in sequences from inside to outside to indicate a turn. Also new for 1965 were standard front disc brakes, and doubled-sided keys.
Though it was the last year of the generation, 1966 had a stylistic revision for the Thunderbird highlighted by a new egg crate-style grille with a large Thunderbird emblem at its center and a single-blade front bumper. The rear bumper was restyled to include new full-width taillamps. Engine choices were also revised for 1966. The standard 390 cu in (6.4 L) V8 equipped with a single four-barrel carburetor was rated at 315 hp (235 kW). Newly optional and taking the top position for performance was a 345 hp (257 kW) 428 cu in (7.0 L) FE V8. The optional 428 cost only $86 over the base engine.[11] This was the last year for the convertible until the "retro" models of 2002-05.

Long time subscriber here! Love how every trans/bellhouse gets Testors Silver brushed on. Very nostalgic for me as I did the same thing! Thanks for staying true to that application!
I am a huge fan of shortcut paints.

Wow, awesome build Chris!! Totally dig the custom vibe, color choices and decals are spot on! The new wire wheels and tires are a really nice addition to this classic kit!
Thanks a bunch!
Nice build. Great to see you do a custom option on a build. It looks like a nice fairly easy to assemble kit. Thanks for sharing.
Love this kit . Just got one . I've made 4 of the older kits. My I share them on your face book page . Thank you.
Please do!
Beautiful Thunderbird!
I have the 1987 issue of the model, AMT/Ertl had their famous *Customizing Series* in which they packed a bunch of extras in the box along with a small tube of glue and putty (now very dry) and oddly, they also dropped some very simple plastic tools in the kit as well. Those are kinda useable, but it was a nice thought. The instructions also had a through customizer guide that offers some good, in-depth advice if you really want to all in on the customization of your '66 Thunderbird or you can build it bone stock. This car was revolutionary when it came out in the 60s and the AMT kit makes a nice addition to any collection.
Another great build an awesome paint job an looks great like always Cris
Thank you so much 👍
"...she had fun Fun FUN - 'til daddy took her T-Bird away."
Very nice build. I like the custom body choices and that blue is just right. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks RA!
Great job - love the look of this one.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great to see you do a "kustom".
Nice build.
Thanks!
Great review and build! Thanks for posting and making the video Chris.
Thanks!
Excellent job on the Thunderbird! Definitely one for my stash!
Thanks!
I got to get one if just for the wheels and tires - oh and the seats and belts too
This came out nicely utilizing the custom parts - I'm presently working on the '66 Galaxie and trying to figure out where I should go with that because some of these 60s style customs look a bit overdone to me. However, this one is pretty tasteful - I guess it comes down to as you always say, building it your own way.
Hey I like that acoustic song. I believe it’s a take off of a Zeppelin song from Zep 3. 👍
Great video Chris, nice to see a custom. Try to do more customs they're cool. keep em coming and I'll keep watching.
Thanks!
Awesome build, Chris! A little research showed that those whitewall/red line tires were made from 1965-1969, specifically for the Thunderbird as an extra cost item. I never knew that. So cool that R2 tooled them up for this kit! Cheers.....:)
Thanks for the info about the tires James.
I think the custom parts and the decal sheet would be worth the price of the kit itself. Great video and review, keep on building.
Totally agree!
I’m just finishing up the 66 Bird hardtop version. Virtually 99 % of the same parts. I wish it had included the tonneau cover but doesn’t. Also a very small decal sheet with just a few licence plates. Your build is very nice as usual!
3 in 1 huh! That tells me I need to get 2 of them at the very least. Love the blue with the white interior.
I think 🤔 I'll put those Kool Kat decals on a 50's or early 60's gasser.
Thanks!
Never seen you do a customize be😊
Now ya have! :)
Looks like AMT were recycling their moulds from the early 60's. I just got my hands on an 1961 AMT Styline Ford T-Bird Hardtop in parts. It has the same exact chassis as yours with the moulded rear axle etc, except your version comes with an engine and removable bonnet/hood. But I'm going to mode mine and turn it into a race car.
Hi Chris, very nice video, thank you very much .
By the way, could the Cordless Airbrush Kit be a better spray paint tool?♥♥♥♥
Have you ever considered making your own red panel line accent? ie adding some thinner to regular red paint... (maybe a 3:1 ratio?) It might work on some of the chrome parts like the tail lights.
I built mine as a custom option but it was painted in light blue colour
Wow something like 20vidiosvin two days wiw
great build! Are you planning on building some 1930 car kits in the future?
I think so, depends on what is sent to the workshop.
I bought two of those about10 years ago made one hard top and the other convertible the only difference in they come In a newer box
I use the same dollar store super glue. Do you have any issues with aging of the glue, like getting brittle and coming loose?
When did fender skirts become wheel pants? Never heard that term before.
Did you have an issue with the gaps on the custom front end facia to the body and hood? Seems that part doesn’t fit.
Well, wasn't the '56 you built last year a convertible? I mean, yes, it had a hard top, but said hardtop could be removed. Really neat build.
Oh yeah!
You are absolutely craking at building cars Lorre's and a few bus's but can't you build some ships & plans
I’m technologically challenged so I’m not very good at this, also I don’t Facebook. Can anybody help me out to try to find some 1/16, 1/24, and 1/25 scale just plain ring type wheel backs? I’m trying to make some deeper rear rims, and maybe I’m calling them the wrong thing when I search for them, but I’m not finding them. Can someone please help me out?
And she'll have fun, fun, fun; until daddy takes her T-bird away...
