@@Scroolewse This definitely isn't true across the board. Age plays a huge factor as well as just simple personality differences. For example, being high in trait openness. There's been a bit of research on the subject and conservatives are on average lower in trait openness and less likely to stray from sources that confirm their bias, but liberals are more quick to align themselves with views shared within echo chambers. We can all do better, and trying to pigeonhole people on the "other side" is counterproductive.
Cyanopteryx does that mean basically conservatives are more likely to think independently but less likely to change their opinions and liberals are more likely to listen to other views but also more likely to quickly agree to commonly shared views within their communities

Do not be discouraged by those who shut out this man's words, because those are people who simply cannot consider other views without questioning their own worldview, and by extension, their sense of self. This is a real Americian with courage. He’s absolutely right about the dangerous echo chambers of news content. I loved how he mentioned because of these chambers we get reactions. Mankind is not a reactive animal. We are all spiritual beings with same emotions. Dialogue, conversation, and talk are what evolve man.

I cannot understand the comments from people who seek to be negative at every turn and a few who didn't view the entire message yet wish to comment. There are those who love to present their opinion in anonymity but do not take the time to evaluate the message because they are too busy trying to critique the messenger... which is so very much a part of what Theo Wilson was trying to help us evolve from. This Is really good Ted Talk. One point I would like to make is in terms of communication. It is very difficult to have communication with individuals or so called trolls on the Internet. People hide behind their computers and say the most vile things. This is why he said in person dialogue face to face is really the best way to communicate with individuals. If even a fraction of the people that said things in person the vile and rude way online, there would be so much hostility between people. Also if you notice these rude individuals online never show their face!!

After assaulting his girlfriend, and attacking the zoo security guards, the police were called. Alonzo Ashley resisted arrest, jumping around acting strange calling out “I’m King Kong and I’m going to eat somebody.” (He was found to have drug paraphernalia including drugs that has not been identified or how much was in his possession.) Police used a taser on contact with Alonzo’s body in order to subdue him while resisting arrest. The paramedics had already been called because of his odd behaviour and due his extraordinary strength while scuffling with zoo security and police. Alonzo while resisting arrest assaulted police including, punching and biting them while resisting arrest. While trying to subdue this man who seemed to be on something that gave him extraordinary strength to resist (on some sort of drugs) police tazed him and finally got him restrained which took 4 security people and officers. They then placed him on his stomach for 3-5 minutes, then they noticed that he had vomited. His heart had stopped. The paramedics immediately tried to resuscitate Alonzo, but due to what ever was in his system, standard resuscitation measures could not bring him back. He died on the scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital. No charges were laid on the officers or zoo security. All actions were found to be justified due to the actions of Alonzo Ashley, who was not just a man that was strolling through the zoo minding his own business.

He raises some good points. I am a Conservative, I'm not alt-right or alt-anything. David Duke and Richard Spencer have no voices contributing to my echo chamber, if you will. Milo is entertaining, but not part of my brain trust. Maybe these guys are essential to the Alt Right, but let's not confuse them with Conservatism. The speaker made a few mentions of Conservatism but the Alt Right is not Conservative. We're philosophical and principled, not ideological.

Hey TED. Why don't you invite Jared Taylor on to drop some meaty, thought provoking words. If you want to understand this movement, then you need provide a space for dialogue of people you vehemently disagree with. I don't expect you will do it, but the conversation is important, and you need to hear both sides to have an understanding of where we are and where we're headed. Ignoring one side will only exacerbate the current situation which may or may not lead to an uptick in violence.

When you demonise people, acuse them of being monsters all the time, you will entrench their views, you will harden their hearts and they will become what you've painted them out to be. However that does not mean you are wonderful, it means that you are just as intolerant as them. Self reflection and proper conversations are the only way you will solve problems.
Damn this is amazing. I have always been a strong conservative, and always will be, but Theo's words have definitely changed my perspective. I know the media and government polarises our society, and have always been disturbed with dangerous left ideology. After this, I am going to start reacting to these instances with more compassion. None of us chose how, where, what we where born as. We are all influenced by life, some better, some worse. Hate and anger won't get us anywhere.

When I see all the negativity in the comment section, I see very few valid arguments against this gentleman, rather I see people who are either so full of hate they dare not think of change or people who are afraid of what the change will bring. I always have to check myself not to be in too much around people I agree with, even though it can be tedious, you know, some engage you in bad faith. But you have to keep challenging yourself.

After reading the comments and watching the video, I cant understand how this is being downvoted? 8K? He is speaking about breaking through ones limited set of ideas to create a deeper understanding of eachother and ourselves...Well spoken and to the point, did I miss something? He is recommending people actually stop and use intelligent thought instead of general party line views to form opinions about other people. He is suggesting that perhaps people on both sides of an issue might have some valid points worth listening to. He is effectively saying that both sides are part of the problem and until everyone stops echoing back the party line, nothing will ever change for the better. This is the problem, because most people don't want to step out of their comfortable little bubbles(on either side) and admit that maybe, just maybe, they could be wrong too. The answer usually sits somewhere in the middle, and so long as people get flack for conceding even a tiny little nothing point to their opposition, it's safer to stay on the edges than admit you can see points on both sides. Now, he shows a good amount of his bias in the way he talks about the people that he himself says had a point. But, at least he appears to be trying to understand the other side, and he appears to be interested in the exchange of views required to foster understanding and civility. For that, he has my respect. He also almost touches on the cause of these issues, but just doesn't quite seem to grasp it. History, Literature, study of the human condition, these are the "liberal arts" a.k.a. the Humanities. and until the I.Q.(science and math) stops ignoring the E.Q. the trend is just going to get worse.

Conversation is key, it's easier than most People think and when you break in down most people have a certain political ideology due to few reasons as well as personality. you have it backwards tim, people are starting to reject globalism due to the proliferation of information. we don't need huge omnipotent institutions to run large groups of people any more, so multinational unions have begun to fracture, because the wealth of information sharing the internet provides makes them redundant. ^ found the utopian seriously though, globalism isn't a new phenomenon. it's the same mechanism that all empires have used to centralize power. it's the homogenization of peoples and their associated traditions and cultures. in your utopia, yes, globalism is great. maybe we will get there in 2000 years provided we don't drive ourselves to extinction. but right now, people across the world are very different, and they are not going to willingly give up their culture for some sort of ideal. you need to be more pragmatic. humanity isn't ready yet.

In the age of "This is my opinion. Unfriend me if you don't agree" posts, by doing that, we've done exactly what he said not to do. By "blocking" people who don't agree with us and staying in our perfect bubbles, we don't have meaningful conversations or see the world from someone else's eyes, which is what got us where we are today. People need to sit down and have those dialogues with people who aren't just like them.

It was never a movement oriented towards imperialism; it was one meant to _preserve_ what made the West _what it is._ In our present day we are now losing all of that because of everyone else's goal to "diversify" (AKA deconstruct) everything here until Europe and North America become the same as every other place on the planet.
Public Education at least the education i received left out so many basics i suspect many of the seemingly intractable problems are due to faulty socialization. 13 years of imprinting, indoctrinating, socializing a young person is uhhhhh more than enough to shape that person for the rest of their life in fact I'd say that amount of time held in institutional captivity is extreme and abusive. Most of these racial conflicts are problems of how people are 'educated' to communicate, to think and to relate and public education is a failing us all in these essential skills.
i agree. however teachers are payed way less than they should be (at least in primary school) because they are not just doing the job of teacher: they're social workers who might be the first contact a struggling family has with resources, or they're psychiatrists who have to deal with 200 kids or more in a year and can't spend the amount of quality time they need on kids who might get the lesson if they didn't have to worry about going home to abuse. i don't wanna beat you over the head, i just feel the same way that education needs to be improved
Read and Listen to some of John Taylor Gatto's books and talks and see whether that changes your mind on how much the existing system can be transformed... Its not the teachers its the system...its historical purposes and pathway has momentum and its effects are the societal pattern we are in to a significant degree. People have been trained for obedience.

I definitely think that there are way more changes than just paying teachers more, like limiting class sizes to 10 kids or letting kids take charge of some lessons. And from experience i know that many adults learn from their children, so including some component of learning outside the classroom might be a great change. And get rid of homework and almost all tests. There are lots of little things wrong because schools are run like businesses
Luis...I know there are many experiments happening which is great... Have you seen the film called The Finland Phenomena? Apparently the Fins have some good insights. I myself would have liked a more outdoor education spending a majority of time exploring outside and a minority inside studying. John Taylor Gatto calls our school system "confinement schooling" and states that that alone is enough to make people feel alienated. Which makes sense. How did our ancestors learn? By being in their community not cordoned off from community.
Summondadrummin i havent seen the film but i do know that the scandanavian countries do have the best education systems around. I know that one of them doesnt have homework, and in almost all european countries the option of trade schools is offered free of cost so long as the student puts in the effort. I myself was a big reader, and often researched beyond what was offered in the classroom when i was fortunate to have a free period. Are there any other changes you would have liked to see? Thank you for recognizing that there are many more ways to see prejudice than one. Instead of playing a twisted metaphorical "top trumps" game of what group has been more beaten and bruised. Accept that it is not a difference in skin color that separates us, it is a unique combination of nature and nurture that changes us, just as a European swallow and an African swallow posess different charachteristics, so do humans. It is a product of nature, a micro example of the ability of living things to adapt to their enviornment and excel from it. We are all human, And we all posess the ability to adapt and overcome. We must stop fighting eachother because of these differences, and support them. Embrace them and celebrate them, because it is nothing more than evidence of human natures ability to be amazing.

Digital echo chambers are a real and existential problem/danger to our society. Being from the left spectrum of political discourse, I found myself trapped in those same echo chambers, although they were'n pushed on my by the social media (since I don't use any of the popular sources like Facebook, Twitter, etc), but I still watched YT videos that confirmed my point of view. Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the same side of an isle, but I've started to listen more and more of people that had something to say against the bad stuff that were born from the Left, people like Bill Maher, Sam Harris, David Pakman... People that are aware of the problems that the regressive Left is generating and not owning or simply not seeing it as a problem. Of course I'm referring to the cancel culture, white male demonisation, etc... If only those harder members from the Alt right had the same strength to start talking about all the stuff that bad in their movement. I know we'll never agree on the religion, economy and some other stuff, but the dialog and the aproachment on many subjects can be talked about and resolved.

I disagree with this guy on several points. But I have a DEEP respect for him for going out and trying to learn other perspectives. He actually empathizes with what most people believe to be his enemy.
Great talk. Having worked with recovering nazis, and similar extremists from the left, I agree, conversation is the answer. This is why deplatforming is terrible, because it allows easily debunked concepts to flourish in isolation, like hot-house-flowers. My only issue is where he lists off a group of people as "having the answers" ...A little too much hubris for him to assume he has found all the answers, and they coincidentally agree with him. But that is a minor point, considering the value of his words and actions.

There's been a bit of research on the subject and conservatives are on average lower in trait openness and less likely to stray from sources that confirm their bias, but liberals are more quick to align themselves with views shared within echo chambers. We can all do better, and trying to pigeonhole people on the "other side" is counterproductive.

This Is really good Ted Talk. One point I would like to make is in terms of communication. It is very difficult to have communication with individuals or so called trolls on the Internet. People hide behind their computers and say the most vile things. This is why he said in person dialogue face to face is really the best way to communicate with individuals. If even a fraction of the people that said things in person the vile and rude way online, there would be so much hostility between people. Also if you notice these rude individuals online never show their face!!

After assaulting his girlfriend, and attacking the zoo security guards, the police were called. Alonzo Ashley resisted arrest, jumping around acting strange calling out “I’m King Kong and I’m going to eat somebody.” (He was found to have drug paraphernalia including drugs that has not been identified or how much was in his possession.) Police used a taser on contact with Alonzo’s body in order to subdue him while resisting arrest. The paramedics had already been called because of his odd behaviour and due his extraordinary strength while scuffling with zoo security and police. Alonzo while resisting arrest assaulted police including, punching and biting them while resisting arrest. While trying to subdue this man who seemed to be on something that gave him extraordinary strength to resist (on some sort of drugs) police tazed him and finally got him restrained which took 4 security people and officers. They then placed him on his stomach for 3-5 minutes, then they noticed that he had vomited. His heart had stopped. The paramedics immediately tried to resuscitate Alonzo, but due to what ever was in his system, standard resuscitation measures could not bring him back. He died on the scene and was pronounced dead at the hospital. No charges were laid on the officers or zoo security. All actions were found to be justified due to the actions of Alonzo Ashley, who was not just a man that was strolling through the zoo minding his own business.

When you demonise people, acuse them of being monsters all the time, you will entrench their views, you will harden their hearts and they will become what you've painted them out to be. However that does not mean you are wonderful, it means that you are just as intolerant as them. Self reflection and proper conversations are the only way you will solve problems.
Damn this is amazing. I have always been a strong conservative, and always will be, but Theo's words have definitely changed my perspective. I know the media and government polarises our society, and have always been disturbed with dangerous left ideology. After this, I am going to start reacting to these instances with more compassion. He is speaking about breaking through ones limited set of ideas to create a deeper understanding of eachother and ourselves...Well spoken and to the point, did I miss something? He is recommending people actually stop and use intelligent thought instead of general party line views to form opinions about other people. He is suggesting that perhaps people on both sides of an issue might have some valid points worth listening to. He is effectively saying that both sides are part of the problem and until everyone stops echoing back the party line, nothing will ever change for the better.
This is the problem, because most people don't want to step out of their comfortable little bubbles(on either side) and admit that maybe, just maybe, they could be wrong too. The answer usually sits somewhere in the middle, and so long as people get flack for conceding even a tiny little nothing point to their opposition, it's safer to stay on the edges than admit you can see points on both sides.
Now, he shows a good amount of his bias in the way he talks about the people that he himself says had a point. But, at least he appears to be trying to understand the other side, and he appears to be interested in the exchange of views required to foster understanding and civility. For that, he has my respect.
He also almost touches on the cause of these issues, but just doesn't quite seem to grasp it. History, Literature, study of the human condition, these are the "liberal arts" a.k.a. the Humanities. and until the I.Q.(science and math) stops ignoring the E.Q. the trend is just going to get worse.

In the age of "This is my opinion. Unfriend me if you don't agree" posts, by doing that, we've done exactly what he said not to do. By "blocking" people who don't agree with us and staying in our perfect bubbles, we don't have meaningful conversations or see the world from someone else's eyes, which is what got us where we are today. Good talk. It's always good to try to understand where the people who are different from us get their own perspective. I don't know why this talk has a net score of 0, as of this moment. It was good. It offered a solution to bridging our current political chasm. Some people in the comments section said that people applauded out of politeness, but if that how you saw it, how can you explain the standing ovation towards the end.

He almost discovered the fact that the Alt Right is actually a _reaction_ to a coercive force acting on Western society. Public Education at least the education i received left out so many basics i suspect many of the seemingly intractable problems are due to faulty socialization. 13 years of imprinting, indoctrinating, socializing a young person is uhhhhh more than enough to shape that person for the rest of their life in fact I'd say that amount of time held in institutional captivity is extreme and abusive. Most of these racial conflicts are problems of how people are 'educated' to communicate, to think and to relate and public education is a failing us all in these essential skills.
i agree. however teachers are payed way less than they should be (at least in primary school) because they are not just doing the job of teacher: they're social workers who might be the first contact a struggling family has with resources, or they're psychiatrists who have to deal with 200 kids or more in a year and can't spend the amount of quality time they need on kids who might get the lesson if they didn't have to worry about going home to abuse.

Read and Listen to some of John Taylor Gatto's books and talks and see whether that changes your mind on how much the existing system can be transformed... Its not the teachers its the system...its historical purposes and pathway has momentum and its effects are the societal pattern we are in to a significant degree. People have been trained for obedience.
Summondadrummin how do you feel about alternate education schemes than the current one? I definitely think that there are way more changes than just paying teachers more, like limiting class sizes to 10 kids or letting kids take charge of some lessons. And from experience i know that many adults learn from their children, so including some component of learning outside the classroom might be a great change. And get rid of homework and almost all tests. There are lots of little things wrong because schools are run like businesses
Luis...I know there are many experiments happening which is great... Have you seen the film called The Finland Phenomena? Apparently the Fins have some good insights. I myself would have liked a more outdoor education spending a majority of time exploring outside and a minority inside studying. John Taylor Gatto calls our school system "confinement schooling" and states that that alone is enough to make people feel alienated. Which makes sense. How did our ancestors learn? By being in their community not cordoned off from community.
Summondadrummin i havent seen the film but i do know that the scandanavian countries do have the best education systems around. I know that one of them doesnt have homework, and in almost all european countries the option of trade schools is offered free of cost so long as the student puts in the effort.
I myself was a big reader, and often researched beyond what was offered in the classroom when i was fortunate to have a free period. Are there any other changes you would have liked to see? Im sure at the very least that going outside to learn would change a lot of minds for the better

I don't agree with all his points or politics, but I agree with the overall message of going out of your bubble. I don't consider myself a Democrat or Republican for this reason, I hate it when people just stay in their echochambers. We can disagree and have a conversation and be open minded, but too many people on both sides are unwilling to be challenged in their ideas.
This was great! When you first started speaking I thought, I bet it would be great to sit down and talk to this guy. And look at that, that's exactly what you. I love when people exploit their gifts for the benefit of others. :)

Accept that it is not a difference in skin color that separates us, it is a unique combination of nature and nurture that changes us, just as a European swallow and an African swallow posess different charachteristics, so do humans. It is a product of nature, a micro example of the ability of living things to adapt to their enviornment and excel from it.
We are all human, And we all posess the ability to adapt and overcome. We must stop fighting eachother because of these differences, and support them. Embrace them and celebrate them, because it is nothing more than evidence of human natures ability to be amazing.

Digital echo chambers are a real and existential problem/danger to our society. Being from the left spectrum of political discourse, I found myself trapped in those same echo chambers, although they were'n pushed on my by the social media (since I don't use any of the popular sources like Facebook, Twitter, etc), but I still watched YT videos that confirmed my point of view. Don't get me wrong, I'm still on the same side of an isle, but I've started to listen more and more of people that had something to say against the bad stuff that were born from the Left, people like Bill Maher, Sam Harris, David Pakman... People that are aware of the problems that the regressive Left is generating and not owning or simply not seeing it as a problem. Of course I'm referring to the cancel culture, white male demonisation, etc... If only those harder members from the Alt right had the same strength to start talking about all the stuff that bad in their movement.
I know we'll never agree on the religion, economy and some other stuff, but the dialog and the aproachment on many subjects can be talked about and resolved.

Btw, most people labled as alt right would not hesitate to have an honest discussion about these things. The ones intolerant towards having an open respectful discussion seem to consistently be on the left/far left.

Great talk. Having worked with recovering nazis, and similar extremists from the left, I agree, conversation is the answer. This is why deplatforming is terrible, because it allows easily debunked concepts to flourish in isolation, like hot-house-flowers.
My only issue is where he lists off a group of people as "having the answers" ...A little too much hubris for him to assume he has found all the answers, and they coincidentally agree with him. But that is a minor point, considering the value of his words and actions.
