  • The conclusion to this Lister Junior story - Having fitted new valves, guide bushes, new Piston rings, Contact breaker Points, HT Lead, checked all over, filled with clean fresh oil / Petrol, we eventually reach a point where we are ready to try and start this old girl up once again. This video shows that moment, when a very old engine, once left for dead, even scrap, comes back to life once more.... enjoy! :-)

I just love seeing people bring these antique engines back to life the music they make is beautiful to my ears
I grew up on a farm and am used to all the machinery of today that is so noisy and complicated
I have a Petter 3.5HP diesel engine I rescued from the scrap yard and returned to operating condition

Fantastic, thats how they all should run!
It looks great and doesn't get too hot either which is good to see.

Love old machinary. It has such history. I live in the south where we deal with hurricanes so most everyone owns a portable generator. Many years back I was a mechanic for the john deere dealer. Helped him one year we got hit by a storm and we took a lister 1 cylinder diesel generator to keep his home up and running.....had to move it into place with a small tractor, got it hooked in and running. Ed ran that unit 24hrs a day for two weeks, only shutting down to fuel and check or add oil. Ran a 3 bedroom house with that little lister including the central air system, got to have certain comforts, LOL.

@007vauxhall Cheers and thanks for the vote, Yes I am really pleased with myself, I should be, its been a pain at times, costly and frustrating all at the same time, but the minute this old lady fired up once again, I saw all that smoke appear from the exhaust, I knew I'd cracked it and I had the biggest grin in the world, Priceless !!!!
You just cant buy those feelings, I can recommend it to anyone out there... You try it and see :-))

I spotted this engine on ebay, I won the bid, but I didnt realise just how much work and expense was needed to get her running again. Saying that, getting her to run once more was a challenge in itself, so it was to hell with the cost and just do what you have to do, obviously the moment she actually fired up and ran was a priceless moment and definitely the Icing on the cake... Thanks for watching and commenting...Paul :-)

I didn't restore it, what you see is original paintwork. All I did was fit new valves, guides, and new Piston rings, reassemble, and fired her up. I had no choice but to get new valve guides made, as the originals had seized and broken. This engine had been stood outdoors for many years in all weathers. I bought life back to her.
Yes would be nice if I had a nice dynamo or similar to run off her. Thanks for commenting and watching. :-)

Funnily I do have a few old Whit spanners mostly scrounged and found, plus some my Grandad gave me, I do have some Metrics as well, depends what Im working on at the time. ha ha. Lets face it Im no spring chicken any more, so I've had a few years to collect my gear, like the engines they too live on. :-))

My one and only goal when I spotted this old girl was to get her running again, and keep her looking original. I have remained true to my word on both counts. Now she sits in the dry waiting for the next time that I fire her up, which is every once in a while. I don't do engine shows oddly enough, but I occasionally visit them. No Im just happy to tinker with the engines when the mood takes me. Thanks for a nice comment. Happy New Year :-)

@enpeemac These machines are very artistic, with their rustic looks & rhythmic sounds, they are mechanical pieces of art in every way, & this is another one saved for the world to see.
Its not been either easy or cheap, but most definitely worth it..!! - To hear that dormant lump of rusty iron make those working noises once more is pure magic to me, especially when I look at the photos taken the day I bought her home. My beer tasted exceptional on this day Nigel, thx for such lovely comments. P

Really cool, nice to see n old engine up and running again. I'm a volunteer at the Northern Ohio Railway Museum and we're restoring an Interurban Railway car built in 1924. We are fortunate to have most of the car intact as we have several other cars that lack power and control equipment due their age. Our current motive power is a 1960 Plymouth locomotive. We have a cab ride video posted at: A Cab Ride In The Plymouth Locomotive at Northern Ohio Railway Museum

Yeah Im the same, I mean once they've gone, then they've gone for good in my view, you cant just go out there and get them back. Job done as they say. Thanks for commenting. :-)

Thank you for a lovely comment. I never realised just how much work was needed to make this old girl run again when I bought her. The previous owner didn't tell me it needed new valves and guides, which proved expensive to get made. Saying that, I knew I was committed to getting her fired up once more, so the challenge was met. You can imagine after many many years of sitting outdoors rusting away, it was a pure joy to hear that engine splutter back into life once again. Thank you for watching.

Thanks for a great comment, yes it took quite a bit of time, effort and money to bring this old girl back to life, but it was well worth the effort come the actual day she fired up after so many dormant years lying outdoors somewhere quietly rusting away. Hard to explain, but as a mechanic yourself, you know that feeling is good when you make something work once more... Thank you...Paul :-)

Its amazing what results you can achieve sometimes when we put our minds to doing something. This engine looked in a sorry state when I collected her, cost me a small fortune having new valves and Guides made, Piston Rings etc, but it was worth it to see and hear her fire into life after so many years stood lying dead.

It became a challenge when I first bought it, just to fire her up again, it cost me more than I bargained for, having to have new valves and Guides made, but by then I'd reached a point of no return, so I just continued, I just had to see and hear her run again. It was worth it all in the end, no amount of words can describe, some old chunk of iron, left to rot away, firing up once more... Thank you for watching and commenting. :-)

@1958IanM I know, was thinking the same myself, as time passes by and you keep doing this and that, you soon forget just how ugly it looked when I first bought it, I must have had a vision when I first clapped eyes on it and decided I wanted it, or I think it was more the challenge of "I'll get that going again" either way Im glad I took photos at the start, makes me feel really chuffed with myself now.
Trouble is now, Im at a lose end again... ha ha

Restoring any engine can be a potential money pit, just depends how far you wanna take it and to what level of restoration. In this case, I bought the engine because of its original paintwork still being present, never paint over good original paintwork, its a sin! - However in this case, one of the valves was stuck fast, and damaged too. I had to have two valves plus guides made at an eng firm, which cost me a couple of hundred quid, plus new rings, that was just to make her run again. THX :)

  • @Bevoin1970
    @Bevoin1970  11 років тому

Thanks for a great comment, yes you could say it was a labour of love. I certainly ended up doing and paying more than I anticipated at the time. At first glance of this rusty old heap of iron, I was hooked, then once purchased, it became a challenge to see if I could get her to run again, after new valves & Guide bushes had been made, all was reassembled, cleaned etc, and away she went. Yep I was one happy chappy that day...lol :-)

Absolutely amazing Paul, what you've achieved with that rusty hulk was just miraculous...it's the same sense of disbelief when I've seen old rusty Locomotives come from the scrapyard at Barry, and twenty years later they are like they were as built. I had the same feeling of pride watching the Lister evolve from a rusty caterpillar to a beautiful Butterfly. She sounded as sweet as a nut after Daddy had imputed a little love and tender care...A 10/10 production Paul...Faultless throughout...Bob

It does thanks Paul. I will carefully inspect that area and see if I can find any evidence of it. If I can't it may have to wait until I strip the paint off to locate and get the bolt drilled out and replaced. PS. I meant to type that mine is an A56 not 46. Anyway no great drama for the moment; it just makes oil changes more difficult as I lift the engine and tip it! Thanks for the information though as it does help to narrow down the possible search area!

I use my Lister SR1 to run a 4kw generator head. This then runs my pool pump all summer long. When my pool is not in use, I use the energy to charge battery banks and run my washer and dryer on the weekends. I use waste oil to feed the Lister SR1 blended with 10% diesel, old gasoline or discarded fuel oil.
