One of the most depressing yet beautiful songs we can ever hear in metal history. Simply perfect!
"rock history"
a rock floating in space having trouble understanding?
Fade to black is metal but ok
a rock floating in space *blues metal
This is metal not rock dumbass
If this isn't played at my funeral, I'm not going.
😂😂 We will take you by force
That was funny thanks..
😘🤘
Ok..!!?
hmm
Kirks intro solo blows my mind all the time on this live performance, the tone is so beautiful and he nails it
It better be since he reportedly paid $2 million for that guitar.
I think it sounds way better becase it's in E flat
@@eliju420 dude ARE YOU SERIOUS? Is it for real???
@@rashadmahmood3784 Yes. this guitar was previously used by gary moore
Well that wah pedal part sounds like ass
Yes, this song literally saved me. Not only this song. ALL of Metallica's music is like medicine. Music, members of Metallica. It is thanks to you that I am still here and it is good. Thank you Metallica.
Satanic "medicine" like alcohol and drugs, they will all take you down......................................................... ~*~
Glad you're still here! Have a terrific day and rock on.

We want you here! 😎
I hear you bruvva 👊
How to bring a 47 year old man to tears.... Thankyou

Unfortunately this song is about suicide haha still a great song
still, my powersong is creeping death
Im 11 and all I want to do is go to a Metallica concert before they stop performing. You guys are legends.
They will be around for at least 10 more years, so you will hopefully experience one bud:)
I’m going to a show in Detroit in December
@@Halvor1 ye but they wont be the same. Just compare concert 10 years ago and now. U can apply the same ideea for the next 10 years. he should go asap till they wont get too old. They already said they are afraid they wont be able to sing master of puppets as it should so they will soon stop performing it. Also the voice is going down and the energy. This makes me feel so sad :( Long live metallica
Im from Sao Paulo in Brazil and i'll go on April 25th
U need to get one sumhow kid.
I honestly don't understand how people say this performance isn't one of if not the best of this song. Personally this is my favorite performance for Fade to Black because you can feel a lot more emotion in James' voice from 4:15-5:30 especially that "goodbyeeeee" at 5:15 is just so good. With James on top of Kirk and Lars killing it this just takes the cake. I don't know what else to say I just know this is a performance you can feel through the video.
That last goodbye is almost like a cry! Just adds an extra element to the song which, in my opinion is absolutely beautiful.
@@Ranganation As nice as a guy Hammett is, any performance with Hammett is not going to be the best. He sounds terrible in this recording as well. It is so awkward to hear Hetfield knock it out of the park, Lars being decent, even the bass is super tight with everything. And then Hamett's awkward and out of tune solo's hover on top. Does Metallica have a recording of this song where someone else plays the lead parts?
@@Prometheus4096 Then if u think that kirk isn't good enough for metallica you better write a better solo than him and then play it live in front of a crowd
@@n1kosg You can't read, can you?
This peformance is no doubt the best of the best. I can enjoy it forever.

My father passed away in August 2018. This was performed the following month. A fitting song for how I felt at that time.
May he rest in peace Damien… 🙏
@@Dirksma thanks mate, appreciated.😌
Glad you had a positive outlet to help you deal with these things life throws at us.
This song helped me through a very lonely time in life but it means something different to me now.
That’s why it’s such a special song
Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad, my aunt, my granny the past years. Just my mom and brother left. My neighbor passed away just 2 weeks ago. I used to talk to him quite often when I saw him outside. He was a sweet kind guy and I connected very well with him. I could start to chat with him and before I knew it an hour had passed. Both bikers so lots to talk about.
Hardly anyone knew he had terminal cancer. He didn't want to burden anyone with this. My friend who lived right next to him called me up and told me he passed away half an hour later. What happened? She knew about his plan to end his life with help from doctors. The date and time he picked himself and he wanted to do this alone. Rip John.
Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further, every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

5:13 Gwen James says goodbye while transitioning to the next riff was just so compelling, like for on an emotional level for some reason. Could be this song just sounds and was put together this immaculately. Definitely a 100/10
It’s about 7:39am rn and as soon as I heard 5:31 and onwards from Kirk’s guitar I immediately started tearing up a bit it’s the 2nd time now I’ve cried listening to fade to black you can seriously feel every once of emotion coming out of his guitar!

They almost always improvise. Playing the same way gets boring

At 3:33, I just can't, man... My whole body shivers from that part. Goosebumps throughout the whole song. I have no idea how else can you finesse the hell out of this track. Damn, what a performance!
İts same but in Last part outro solo
When the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up, you know the music has meaning and it’s real.
"Now he's gone" hits way different in this performance. Instant fucking goosebumps!
I’ve cried listening to this song twice in the last year+ it’s so powerful! This is the only metal song I’ve ever had speak to me so much yet so clearly at the same time!!
Seriously, never knew a $2m six string would make such a difference.
Don’t think I’ve ever heard every single note Kirk played in this song until now!
Amazing!
I have to admit that guitar sounds awesome. In a strange way it sounds like Gary Moore playing Metallica, if is of course a guitar which was used by him.
That’s cool.
Yeah I ave no knowledge of the guitars history, just know the brand is a quality like no other.
I’m just a die hard Metallica fan for 30 years now?

Kirk is amazing, but Lars absolutely takes it to the next level with that pounding beat in the solo. Incredible. Love how they gathered around him for support lol.
What? He's fucking terrible! He loses the beat when play fills CONSISTENTLY, as a bass player i could NEVER play with a drummer that bad...... i don't know how Trujillo does it.
5:26 can we have a minute to talk about how perfect is this "Oh Oh Ohhh" time with the rythm guitar? dude that hits me hard as fuck
It’s so perfect
It would've been better if he stayed at the mic while he did it but it still adds so much to the song at that part it fits perfectly

Jesus, no wonder they still fill arenas because your average fan has no clue how average they are as musicians.

Great to see Kirk playing the "Greeny" Burst Gibson. Between him, Gary Moore and Peter Green, this guitar has been played infront of more people, at more gigs than any other. The worlds most iconic and most expensive Les Paul for sure.
Interesting fun topic and one for potential debate, you could be 100% correct, however Jimmy Pages "Number one" Les Paul which he got from Joe Walsh would be another that could give Greeny a run for its money.
How much will it worth after Kirk retires it hmmmmm
He could trade it to Bonamassa to keep the blues rock legend alive...
medaner1974 According to Kirk, Greeny was offered to Bonamassa and he didn’t want it

I was also on the rail, wish i could go back and relive it.
Went from fighting Napster, to giving us professionally mixed free live performances daily. Metallica is king!
Napster was never about live performance, it was about studio recordings.
They were encouraging fans to bootleg their shows from their very earliest days.
yep, we all make controversial decisions, I just hope most people will agree with me that the napster thing is totally water under the bridge by now and they've clearly shown their endless devotion and appreciation for us in a way that's so genuine, as they've gotten older Metallica have proven time and time and time again how far they will go and how much they will do for their fans, the past is the past in this case. Fucking legends aye, appreciation is a powerful motivator. Rock on

Years and years of hard graft pay off here's the proof
It's so weird listening to this now in 2019. I've had depression for 20 years since the start of high school to the point where this was like my anthem. It's been one of my (if not the one) favorite songs ever. I dunno if it helped or just made me wallow in the depression worse, but I listened to the crap out of it and related so much and had so many feelings associated with it.
And now listening to it, after FINALLY getting help and seeing a psychiatrist and treating my mental illnesses, it's weird to hear it again. I still absolutely love the song, but it doesn't resonate in the same way, where I had all the feelings of emptiness, sadness, loneliness, feeling pathetic, and not wanting to exist. Instead, due to the treatment, I no longer hate myself, wish I died, etc, so it doesn't hit me in the same way it used to.
I'm not entirely sure if I'm now just seeing it as an amazing song that once meant the world to me, or if I'm seeing it with gratitude that I made it through to the other side, even if it took 20 years and some help from this song for a broken-brained high school kid who felt things would never be anything but terrible.
Also, yeah, like many others, shocked by how great they still sound, especially when performing this song.
yah it's weird how this song changes for you over time...Imagine these guys, they wrote it when they were TWENTY-FOUR!....Then three years later they lose Cliff.....and now they are in their mid fifties....I bet it keeps evolving and has a new meaning for them also.
Well as you know the song itself is somone that's suicidal and actually kills themselve it helped alot of people when it was released in glad you seeked out help

@@GazanfervonderBarut no not offended at all. I’m actually glad you asked. It will be hard to explain so please forgive if I don’t make a lot of sense. When I placed my faith in Christ (literally trust) I had a change of heart and mind. I use to listen to a lot of thrash/heavy metal. A lot of anger in the music like pantera. I started feeling convicted like never before as to what I put in my mind. I still listen to some of metallicas music now and then because I like the music. The lyrics sometimes are very anti God like the God who failed implying Christ failed by being crucified. Certain songs I can’t listen to anymore because of the meaning behind them. But songs like one that try to shine light on ptsd can actually have a positive message even though it seems dark.
It’s true what the scripture says. When you repent (literally change of mind) you become a new person. That’s the part I can’t explain other than the Holy Spirit coming to make his home in my life. MetalForTheMasses oh shut up
@@jojo1joestar he's kinda right though. I love Kirk, but sometimes he butchers his own solos that's undeniable
MetalForTheMasses he improvises fade to black. Every live it’s almost a completely different solo with some of the same parts from the original.
Kowxley I’m addicted to watching Metallica lives and I’ve watched a shit ton of full performances through the years. Kirk gets shit on by mustaine fans and that’s mainly it. I’ll pay some songs out for you so that you understand it’s not fuck ups
Blackened- Shortened solo. The mid section is different
One- the second solo to one he doesn’t tap
Fade to black- he improvises the last solo
The shortest straw- does extra harmonics
That’s mainly it. Sometimes I’ll hear something in his solos and ask myself if that was a fuck up. I’d then just go to other lives and compare and most of the time I find out it’s not.
Also sure Kirk has had some negative highlights in his performances. Most of them being some of the easiest parts which makes it look worse. This happens mainly because he’ll just forget whatever he’s supposed to play because it’s so easy so he just doesn’t practice it. He’s changed that in the past 2-3 years.
Plenty guitarists have fuck ups during performances, kirk gets extra hate for it which is pretty stupid.

this whole concert is insane. the crowd energy is unreal. youd think they were in there 80s prime here. nope 30 years after the fact and still sound like bliss.
Just bought this gig on CD from the Metallica website. Take I made the right decision judging on these comments :D
So glad I got to see this concert in person, hopefully they come back to Lincoln sometime soon
GOD! This is giving me chills!!!
4:09 still gives me goosebumps
same
Yeah James part
You know what else does ? 0:18
Without a doubt my favourite part in any song. Its amazing
Seems James' mustache is powering Metallica
Knower-Liberty-Gamer1776 lol he is
Pure Magic!!
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made! It gives me strength when I'm sad... Thank you very much Metallica for making my days better (From a teen fan❤)
happy to see James singing like this at the age of 55.
Dima Khanjaliashvili bruce dickinson is 60 of iron maiden still going strong
I'm happy anytime I can just look at James!
Absolutely. James' live voice has not been great for a long time. He sounds pretty good here, though.
James sounds better than ever here. When you you get to be our age and still able to just kick ass you gotta give them their props. I wish I could do anything this well at my age. I just watched a couple videos about James and Lars' homes and cars and all I can say is wow. Lamborghini's and 200 million dollars worth of toys. I'd say that have gotten their dues paid. I've yet to see what Kirk has? He deserves at least what the other two have. Rock on crazy bros
Auto tune technology helps too!
Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he's gone
No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye
goodbye
Super sick lyrics
i can totally relate 2 the lyrics
That's the one Eddie is playing !
When I saw them play in Pasadena, the second this song came on I teared up. It wasn’t a “oh fade to black is playing, I’m emotional”, it was immediate, it was innate. This song means so much to me it’s crazy
Man these dudes are amazing. I got to see them live for my bday last year. Unreal
James's voice expresses pain melancholy anger suffering truly wonderful
Love the fact Gary's les paul is still getting played and not gathering dust. Couldn't have gone to a better band.
Couldn't have gone to a better band? Wdym?
@@lixarion1885 Metallica are one of the best bands ever. What did you not understand?
@@drbrooky Your last sentence, im sorry im still a beginner at english. What do you mean by it?
The guitar is still getting played on stage by one of the biggest bands in the world. And not just put in storage or a museum. It lives on and has more of a story to tell.
@@lixarion1885 he means there isn’t a better band the gutair could have gone to than Metallica
Perfection in every thinkable way...! And my sons choice to play (as a guitarist) at the entrance exam next month at the musical high school :-)
Let's take a moment to realize that Kirk is stepping up his game a lot this is the best he's sounded in 10 years
He sounds fantastic
Ethan my name is also that 2 million dollar les paul from peter green that helps too
Oh well definitely.
Ethan my name is
A $2 million dollar guitar helps! Lol
But seriously, they all have stepped up their game.
Amazing how much their music sounds today.
This song is an absolute masterpiece, this live performance is incredible as well! You guys never fail to impress me with everything you do. ❤️
Damn this is better than the studio version. Also Shoutout to Robert Trujillo steady thud thud thudding away just casually making the floor and walls rattle
The guitar solo at the beginning is one of my top 5 favorite solos of all time
Top 5??? List your top 5 because this should be 1
And the second solo too
The Best of metal: Metallica, listening in 2019
La mejor interpretación de Fade to Black en la historia sin parangones
Perfecta Brutal !!! Sincronía exacta en cada arreglo !!! Me deja estupefacto con semejante perfomance !!!!
this is incredible! it makes you forget all about napster and every album after Re-Load and lets you enjoy them all over again. back when they were awesome and pure and metal.
The greatest song ever made.
It’s close...
Worst!
One of the greatest!
