    Great breakdown....quick question. Doing a similar project shortly. When you ran the multiple takes did you just feed everything into multicam as if it was one take? Any tips on not having issues syncing everything with the music through multiple takes?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      Yup just made a multicam clip. We shot it with a pre-recorded track (so basically music video) and it made it super easy to sync.

    Realy nice breakdown, appreciate it! Would you say if it weren't so many musicians this could be done with 2 DP's or even on your own? I guess it is just convenient to have 3 cameras instead of doing more takes.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      I would still have wanted 3 in my crew (including me). Setting up lights, scrims, audio (for message/story/host)/monitoring audio, less takes and tear down definitely is reason enough to have the same size crew.

    Thanks for sharing. Were the songs pre-recorded? I was also wondering how close were the colors on the 4k & Ursa. I did something similar for a church with the Ursa Pro and the 6k and I was surprised at how different the colors were.

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      Yes the songs were pre-recorded. Colors were slightly different but not much work to get them to match. Gen5 color really helped with that.

    Hey man! just a quick tip on the grading that i would give you is to bring your black point down to 0 IRE :)

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому +2

      0 ire is pure black which I would only set if I were going for an infinity black background. I kept it above 0 ire since there wasn’t any pure black and I wanted to maintain shadow details 👍

    Amazing as always man! That lighting looked so nice and so well motivated by the space. I’d love to see a breakdown on how you multicam edit something with this many takes and with very creative unpredictable camera angles 🙌🏼

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      Thanks so much! Since I had a safety shot during each take, it was quite easy to edit. I like to hang around the lead vocalist for most of the time during the verses while cutting every now and then to instruments/creative shots. When the song picks up, I just cut more often to move with the speed of the song :)

    Can we have a link for those beautiful practical lights? That nasty banding you talk about on the pockets will happen even in Raw or Prores 444?

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      The codec has nothing to do with the banding. It has to due with rolling shutter and the speed of the sensor readout. www.robe.cz/patt-2017/

    • @leonardotdias
      @leonardotdias 3 роки тому

      @@TylerEdwards Ah ok, I thought banding was something else. Like when you shoot a blue sky with an 8-bit camera and see those “steps” between the blue tones, instead of a smooth transition.

    Eventually this could probably be done with fewer lights and a smaller crew you'd just also have to move them around when doing takes and plan it out a little bit better. Great project and approach I am just trying to encourage someone who might not have the same gear and crew to go after it.

  • @halfgraincinematography
    @halfgraincinematography 3 роки тому

    I really don't mean to come across as too critical, but I think when sharing your setup in this form it should inspire discussions and critique in order to be truly helpful. And for every beginner looking at this, I might have some food for thought.
    That being sad, I think you over-lit this shoot. Especially all the wide shots (4:42), but also the shots of the front man look so flat. There isn't much background separation, no color contrast, no dynamic. It comes from using such a huge soft light source without any further negative fill, flagging or using a grid. It just lights up the whole room and reflects everywhere. Sure, there are a lot of people to be lit, so if the client wanted everyone to be clearly visible and lit, maybe that's what you needed to do. But if the goal was to make it look interesting, I would have blocked the key light off on sides and top, so it's more controlled, toned all the lights down a little, worked with more darkness in the room and actually use all the backlighting from those beautiful practicals to create accents. An example of this would be this shoot I did years back: ua-cam.com/video/_ybjSJNF5Xw/v-deo.html
    The singer definitely is too bright, because this huge keylight I used was a halogen lamp which couldn't be dimmed down further. But apart from that I think you can see the difference in control of the light, how backlights create visual contrast and accents and the overall picture isn't as flat.
    Curious to hear what your thoughts are after the shoot and what you would do differently next time.
    Cheers!

    • @TylerEdwards
      @TylerEdwards  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your input! We had one day to load in, shoot an interview in another part of the venue, shoot 4 songs, and a message. That being said, it was a balance of time efficiency and filming. We needed everyone to be lit, so a big source was the best option. I personally didn’t think it was too flat, but I also didn’t want to make it look too contrasty and moody-it was a shoot for a Christmas Eve service for their church and there was a lot of energy in the songs. Had it been for a Good Friday service, that would be a different story. There was a little bit of color contrast but not much. They wanted a warm and inviting feeling and I thought we did a good job delivering on that. I added that one light to give subtle color contrast, but if I added much more color contrast with lights, it would have looked off too me-where would the motivation from that be coming from? There simply wasn’t enough time and budget to audition anything else. Given the budget I had to work with, there’s not much else I would have done to be honest. If we were just filming one song, there would definitely have been things I would’ve done differently.

    • @halfgraincinematography
      @halfgraincinematography 3 роки тому

      @@TylerEdwards Hey Tyler, yeah that makes complete sense. The final look is so heavily affected by practical factors and what's realistic that day. I just shot a live band video over a full weekend for only 2 songs and time-wise it was still tight. You definitely delivered on the warm feeling!
