What I like the most about this breakdown is that theses scenes looks really cinematic but the lighting is minimum, proving that you don’t really need big setups and even we could try something like that by learning where to put the lights. Bring some more, I wanna keep learning!
Exactly, more please!
Absolutely
True but also the cams and lenses they use are top of the line, plus the film is graded by pros which compensates a lot imo
The number of lights might by minimal, but I'm not sure I'd call a 12x frame with crate, pushed up against a wall, and therefore probably lit by several expensive panels, or one massive flex LED, a lightweight setup achievable by your typical indie filmmaker!
@@zoanyway I'd say the point really is just seeing the simple concepts used here which can be recreated for any interior daylight scenes, where you don't need super complex setups. Sure, the gear might be out of reach of tiny budgets, but that can be addressed by limiting the scope of your shots (not doing enormous wide shots or long, moving master shots) and "cheating" a lot in your close-ups. Also, rental exists for a reason ;)
Well we just got 10x as much useful lighting info in this one video that 100 UA-camrs could give you in as many videos. Love your videos Lewis!
Yes! Cinematography Database used to do this kinda thing before he became an Unreal Engine addict and entered the matrix. Great to see this!
I love to see a lot more of this.It gives a great insight into the planning and the how to keep the changes from setup to setup minimum.
Keep on posting my friend. Very inspiring!
I need to see a wandering dp/Lewis Potts crossover. Pure DP glory!!!
Was getting wandering DP vibes

trueee💯💯
Honestly I really love your chill demeanour. It is a breath of fresh air, seeing as other filmmaking-youtubers are the embodiment of hype, while the actual content is drowning. Every video is an inspiration! Keep it up!

I really loved to have this breakdown! It thought me a lot and got to me thinking of why planning is crusual 😍 More of these please 🙏
Reminds me of the classic top lighting of white linen on tabletops that Robert Richardson uses.
To answer your last question: this is absolutely definitely something I'm interesting in watching. Pretty sure I'm not on my own either. Keep them coming!

More lighting breakdowns!!
those 7 minutes and 18 seconds went by so fast, loved your take on these!
Really nice seeing someone do the things Cinematography Database used to do. Please keep on doing it.
Yes, these breakdowns are always helpful. I have gotten into the habit of studying available light everywhere I go, as if I had to shoot with it or recreate it. I have to get in the habit of analyzing film scenes as you have done in these videos. Finding BTS for reference helps, but it’s a good exercise even without BTS.
Yes Lewis, Yes! Love to see more of these videos!
Thanks for this. I love lighting breakdowns from feature films or episodics. There is so much to take away from these types of videos.
Yes! More lighting breakdowns please!
I'm gonna try out the "light from below catchlight" strategy as soon as the opportunity presents itself. This stuff is so amazing man, can't thank you enough for putting it together.

Super interesting! I loved the insights about how the planning and logistics of the shoot played into the decisions. Like splitting the two 4x4 frames to make it easier to transition to a different set up. This is something that I don't take into consideration nearly enough.
